I've heard you talking about Shonen Knife quite a few times now. Are they a Japanese band? What kind of music do they make?
Kid Icarus
12-31-2004, 12:37 AM
They're Japanese. Their name translates to "Boy knife", or a knife ment for boys. They make strange punk music. Not about government, oh no. About getting fat from eating cake, about spending too much money, and about jelly beans. They're great. If I EVER have the chance, I'm seeing them live.

my top 10 auch its hard so much great music so little space.
1.nirvana ok lets face in that little time and so much ****ing great rockn roll and if kurt cobain had not been killed/ killed him self i think nirvana would have made a album that was ten times more powerful and raw than in utero.
they we awsome pearl jam jeez eddie vedder you can never be kurt cobain you wil always be remebered as the guy after cobain the number two not the spoke man of a angy rebellian generation.
2. david bowie
the best male voice, and what a genius he is known as a chamelon he changes all the time and does it with style.
3. joy division
again depressed/goth rock late 70s but this was awsome and raw, the beautiful dark gothic voice of ian curtis was powerful "closer" maybe the best album of the 80s.
4.tool
james "maynard" keenan is and will always be a musical genius if you call yourself a music lover and you havent heard tools music well check them out even "a perfect circle"
5. led zeppelin the worlds most important rock band ever
6. the pixies if it hadent been for the great music of pixies and the other great late 80s alternative post/punk bands like nirvana, soundgarden, alice in chains osv wouldent or well maybe hadent been that infected and decided to make great punk rock music.
7. john lennon f*** elvis im sorry elvis but you dont stand a chance against lennon he is truely the greatest rocker and rock legend of them all.
8. ac/dc back in black rock n roll all nite day baby if you like party rock put these guys on.

It is also a good thing that the boyband craze ended, as well as the Spice Girls frenzy that plagued our nations, so a change in musical taste should always be considered a good thing.

Wow with a name like that I would have expected you to be into harsher music.
I like some of the harsher stuff too, not as much anymore tho. I'm really into great guitar playing, whatever style it may be. My name I actually formed from two things. The song bloodbath in paradise is one of my favorite ozzy tunes, so I just yanked out bloodbath, and the 666 is kind of an Iron Maiden reference. For some of the really heavier stuff with some really ripping playing, I really love the band Nevermore, Jeff Loomis is an absolute monster, great player.

Woah, top 10 list aint my thing, but sure, i can write down the bands and artist that i respect and enjoy most.
Pink Floyd - My all time favorite band. Classic masterpieces like "Piper at the gates of dawn", "Meddle", "Dark side of the moon", "Wish you were here", "Animals" and "The Wall" does still sounds like nothing else.
When Punk, Disco and New Wave killed most of the 70s rock giants, Pink Floyd just keep on doing what they wanted, and produced some of their finest work. When glam rock and pretty boy and girl bands ruled in the 70s, suddenly Pink Floyd and other classic progrock acts made people think with their intelligent lyrics about how sick our society has become.
Frank Zappa - Genius or lunatic? Whatever folks call him or his music, it is truly made by a man who knew music in and out in every way. He made almost 50 albums, and i dear you to check them out. Frank went from Psychedelic, jazz, doo-woop, avant-garde, progressive rock, classic, blues, heavy rock, punk, new wave, damn is there any musical style he didnt go into?
Most people know him by songs like "Bobby Brown" or "Dont eat the yellow snow", but dont know a thing about his other work. So dont judge him by the stupid lyrics, well stupid aint right sick and twisted, and very ofte hillarius lyrics. Anyway, to Frank the music was always the most important thing, not the lyrics. He had some fine musicians with him along. Steve Vai, George Duke, Ruth Underwood and Terry Bozzio. If you hade been in the Mothers of invention, you had go trough the best music school there is.
Sure Frank was tough, he hated drugs and none of his band mates were allowed to fool around when they worked with albums or did gigs.
Frank was also one hell of a guitarist. Once youre hooked to Zappa and his magnificant music you will never get tired of it.
Kraftwerk - The godfathers of well, almost anything that is played on the radio or tv today. Where would hip hop or electronica been without Kraftwerks classic albums? You can hear samples from Kraftwerk in so many hip hop and rock tunes. Last year Coldplay had a big hit with a song called "Talk". That had sampled the theme from Kraftwerks haunting hit "Computer love". When almost every rock act in the 70s had english band names, and tried to copy english and american bands to become popular, Kraftwerk did their best to hold on to the German roots, and show the world where they are from. When Kraftwerk become popular with "Autobahn" they traveled to America, and suddenly people on the streets shouted nazis and give them the "Heil" sign. Kraftwerk were horrified by the media and their ignorance. Their music and image was different to what was goin on in the popular culture. They were aleways one step ahead. With classics cds as "Trans-europe-express", "The Man Machine" and "Computer love" they inspired new generations of music lovers. The lyrics are often cheesy, but sarcastic and funny.
King Crimson - Another classic progressive rock band from the early 70s.
They had big sucess with their debut album "In the court of the crimson king" in 1969. But soon the band was just well Robert Fripp, and the legendary guitar hero and band leader did an impressive job to continue under the name King Crimson with different muscisians over the years.
Their music is very complex and well, sometimes weird. But give it a chance.
In 1973 Robert Fripp and his new lineup made maybe one of the greatest albums of the 70s "Larks tongues in aspic". It had Bill Bruford the drum genius from Yes on it. Further classic albums "Red", "Discipline", "Starless and bible black" and "Beat".
Ultravox! - Most famous for their 1981 hit "Vienna" or their other big 80s hit "Dancing with tears in my eyes" from 1984. But long before the trenchcoats, and cheesy moustaches, they where a punk band formed in 1973. John Foxx was the leader. Their debut album "Ultravox!" from 1976, is considered as one of the most important albums from the punk/new wave movement. But it did not become a commercial sucess. The album was produced by Brian Eno. The music is very punk/garage, but you could clearly hear, that they where moving toward a more synth dominated sound.
The exclemation point was a reference to the german kraut-rock band Neu!.
The albums maybe best song "I want to be a machine" did surprise.
John Foxx said " I wanted to be a machine, becouse i feel i had failed as a human being". The group were very inspired by futurists, and old black and white sci-fi movies such as "Metropolis".
In 1979 John Foxx quits, and had some sucsess as a solo artist, but Ultravox! did hire Midge Ure, and would eventually have big sucsess with their upcoming and more availeble sound. Note that the new line up fronted by Midge Ure, they no longer used the exclemation point in the end.
Gentle Giant - Were one of the most experimental groups of the 70s.
The groups compositional purpose was to "expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular."
They did not become as big as other progrock bands, but today they have a big fan base and is one of the most beloved cult bands from the 70s.
Their music was very complex, and almost childish.
Their classic albums "Gentle Giant", "Acquiring the Taste", "Octopus" and "Playing the fool, and giant for a day". If you like other cult prog bands as Kansas, Caravan, Camel, Gong, The Soft Machine, Van der graaf generator, Focus or Eloy, then you will sure enjoy the brilliant work from one of the best bands the 70s had to offer.
Messhuggah - means "Crazy" in Yiddish. The Swedish technical death metal trash band has delivered some of the best metal albums the last 15 years.
Their 1995 classic "Destroy erase improve" still stands time. If you like Tool, Dream Theater, Pantera or Megadeth, then check em out, or if you just want to hear something different.
ELP - Emerson, Lake and Palmer - The trio emerge from classic progrock groups such as The Nice and King Crimson. And there where rumours in 1969 that Jimi Hendrix would like to be a member in the band, the british media joked that ELP now would be named HELP.
ELP delivered some of the best highlight of the prog era. They where classicly trained muscisians, and has been several times hailed as the super group of the 70s. Carl Palmer maniac drumming, Greg Lakes haunting vocals and wild bass, and offcourse the some times arrogant Keith Emersons majestic Keyboard and piano play. Together they produced a bunch of classic prog albums. "Brain salad surgury", the cover art was made by the man behind the Alien sculptur H.R. Giger. Its maybe ELPs finest moment. The songs as ofte as long as half an hour, but they are never boring or repeative.
Dramatic drum solos, wild guitar solos and Emersons fantastic keyboard solos made this album an instant classic.
Other artist and bands i like:
Rush - Progrock/Heavy rock trio from Canada, with a drummer many consider to be todays greatest.
Talk Talk - A almost forgotten New-Wave Post-rock band from the 80s.
Terje Rypdal - Great rock and jazz guitarist from Norway.
Burzum - Varg Vikernes project. Many fine metal moments.
Gary Numan - Synth god in the late 70s, but in the 80s bands like Depeche Mode and Soft Cell stealed his image and when everyone did synth pop and tried to look weird, Numan faded away. But lately his albums has become much better.
Yes - Fantastic progrock group who enjoyed big sucess in the 70s with a bunch of fine albums, but in the 80s they shifted and become another MTV puppy like Genesis and other rock legends from the 70s.
Jethro Tull - Folkrock, Jazz, Blues, Progrock, and flute. Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull still hold strong today.

Hey now, be fair. I happen to like a bit of Genesis, at least 80s Genesis.
I love the early 1970s Genesis, with Peter Gabriel. But some of the stuff later with Phil as the leader isnt bad, but not quite as good as before either.
Sure Genesis did become superstars in the 80s with MTV showing their videoes 24/7. And its quite impressive that Phil Collins beside the big sucsess with his band, made maybe even bigger sucsess as a solo artist.
Dont get me wrong, Genesis has great musicians, but if you listen to their 70s albums, with and without Peter Gabriel, its like two different groups.
Genesis in the 80s doesent suck, but they dont rock either.
Its like Metallica, you know. Before they become sellouts, they were the real thing. But when they did sell out, they never be the same again.

I've really started to listen to music a lot nowadays. My taste in music has also changed drastically in the last 2 years. I'm a college freshman and 2 years ago as a HS junior I listened to mostly rap/hip hp and some other "hot" songs. Since we're posting lyrics, here's one of my favourites!!
Did you see the stylish kids in the riot
We were shovelled up like muck
Set the night on fire
Wombles bleed truncheons and shields
You know I cherish you my love
But there's a rumour spread nasty disease around town
Caught round the houses with your trousers down
A headrush in the bush
You know I cherish you my love
Oh how i cherish you my love
Tell me what can you want now you've got it all
The whole scene is obscene
Time will strip it away
A year and a day
And Bill Bones
Bill Bones knows what I mean
He knows it's eating, it's chewing me up
It's not right for young lungs to be coughing up blood
Oh it's all
It's all in my hands
And its all up the walls
Well the stale chips are up and the hopes stakes are down
Its these ignorant faces that bring this town down
Yeah I sighed and sunken with pride
I passed myself down on my knees
Yes I passed myself down on my knees
Now tell me what can you want now you've got it all
The whole scene is obscene
Time will strip it away
A year and a day
And Bill Bones
Bill Bones knows what I mean
There are fewer more distressing sights than that
Of an Englishman in a baseball cap
Yeah we'll die in the class we were born
That's a class of our own my love
A class of our own my love
Did you see the stylish kids in the riot
We were shovelled up like muck
Then set the night on fire
Wombles bleed truncheons and shields
You know I cherish you my love
Oh how I cherish you my love.
And here's a classic:
Please allow me to introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
Ive been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a generals rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me lucifer
cause Im in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or Ill lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, whats my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, whats my name
I tell you one time, youre to blame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Whats me name
Tell me, baby, whats my name
Tell me, sweetie, whats my name
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah

I'll admit the solos a lot better on City of Evil, but the overall sound and intensity isn't the same. I don't hate City of Evil. I just don't like it as much as Waking the Fallen or Sounding the Seventh Trumpet.

This is tough to list as I like lots of different music. And a lot of it is indie stuff from local metal bands, huge fan of that scene!
Top ten:
TooL
Pantera
Sepultura
August Burns Red (although I am not a fan of what they preach, they are just damn good at playing)
Simon and Garfunkel
All that Remains
Cat Stevens
Meshuggah
Opeth
And then a ton of Dance, Electronic, classical, and lots of indie stuff.

Holy ****! Theres some good taste in music on this board!
I saw like 3 or 4 people mention Sepultura. I don't care for them after Max, but I love all the old stuff.
For years I hated Meshuggah, so them live, thought meh (though it was an insane show and my dad was up front with me), than a bud lent me OBZEN, and I was like wow. Good Stuff.

You guys, listen. Listen, I need help, you guys. There's this band, right. They're old and not super famous from what I remember. They're kinda like My Chemical Romance but not. Along those lines. I can't remember their name or any of their songs, but damn it it's killing me. One video started with the lead singer like, stepping out of a limo and attending a funeral and junk. A rock video at a funeral, I know, but help me out.
There was also this one episode of Smallville where Lex did something super messed up at the end. As he walks away in slo-mo, one of their songs plays. I liked this song and when I looked it up it was like only a minute and a half long, if that helps. HELP?!
Oh, and my head keeps going to 3MI when I try to think of their name, but I know that's not right. You guys. I'm counting on you. My head will explode.

Wow what a trip I posted in here almost 6 years ago. My favorite bands have changed a bit since. I think I'll do an updated list. This list has no priority as I like them all pretty much the same.
1. Dark Tranquillity
2. Arch Enemy
3. Children of Bodom
4. Megadeth
5. Fischerspooner
6. Autokratz
7. IAMX
8. Testament
9. Iron Maiden
10. (old) In Flames
I'm rather selective with what I listen to even with my favorite bands. When I say I like Megadeth I mean there's a handful of albums I listen to and I enjoy seeing them live. The only bands on the list I like every album for have no more then 3 out currently. Most of them have tapered off for me. Dark Tranquillity is really the only metal band on the list that I feel releases solid work that can be deemed on par with or better then their prior releases every time.

Great stuff to be listening to non-stop. Iggy's the man. The Legacy Edition of Raw Power is worth getting if you don't have an original vinyl copy. The Bowie mixes are so much better than what Iggy did with the album in the '90s.
The Idiot has crawled to my number one favorite album spot, I believe. There's just something about it: its unique sound and mood, the vocal deliveries, the often sparse yet ear-filling instrumentation—even the album cover is the coolest I've ever seen.
http://therisingstorm.net/audio/theidiot.jpg
Every last second and sound is perfect.
Diamond Dogs has also started to become my favorite Bowie album because it has such a similar vibe to The Idiot, although in a glam sort of way.
As for my top ten list, take out Depeche Mode and put Kraftwerk at number nine. :p Been listening to them so much lately.

I have a different variety of songs and artists, but I mainly get my song favorites if it was associated with something else in a movie soundtrack, or I accidentally found one looking up an artist when trying to search for a song I couldn't identify the name. :tlol:Funny story. I knew Danny Elfman from his film compositions and his singing voice as Jack Skellington. So the first time I heard “Weird Science,” I was like, “Oh my god! That’s Jack!”:teek: The first time I heard him sing with the band was on VH1 Classics, where Oingo Boingo was labeled a one hit wonder. Are you kidding me? They are not a one hit wonder. So “Weird Science” is a cool song, but their best is “Dead Man’s Party.” I could listen to that anytime. I love Danny’s voice. He sounds so macabre. But I also like their songs such as “Little Girls,” “Only a Lad,” “Gratitude,” and of course, “Just Another Day.” There’s something cool about that band. I only wish their songs hit the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.:twink::tgrumble:
Was Oingo Boingo you’re first concert? My first was Fleetwood Mac. I know they’re old, but they were great. Lindsey Buckingham is the most underrated guitarist of all time. Rolling Stone Magazine is a joke. They put him at 100 for the list of 100 Greatest Guitar Players? 100? How about 5?:tcool:
The concert I recently saw was Bon Jovi. They performed all their best songs, it was amazing. I do wish I was watching from the front, but Jon Bon Jovi did come to our section to perform in our view. He’s quite the showman.:tsmile:
Did you see anyone recently in concert?:tgrin:

Buckingham is fantastic! I love Fleetwood Mac as well (you can see my top 10 up a few posts). My dad loved the old pre-Buckingham/Nicks era of the group. He couldn't stand Stevie Nicks... heh heh
Anyway... Oingo Boingo was not my first show, it was Aerosmith and I think that was in towards the end of the year in 1990? I was pretty young. But back to Boingo... I think "Just Another Day" is probably their best song but how can you not love Dead Man's Party? :D

Aw man. I’m jealous. I want to see Aerosmith!:tmad: Too bad. Steven Tyler’s voice is going away. The only thing he can do is screech. Maybe that’s why he’s losing his voice.:tlol: So you saw them during the “Pump” album. What’s your favorite song of theirs from the 80’s. I like “Angel,” but “Rag Doll” and “Janie’s Got a Gun” is cool, too.:tcool:
Too bad your dad doesn’t like Stevie Nicks. Oh well. Perhaps he doesn’t like Miley Cyrus either.:tlol:
So yeah, I agree. Those two Oingo Boingo songs you mentioned are my top 2 favorites.:tgrin:
Which reminds me: Do you think that any of these songs that we’ve mentioned could be on a TMNT series if someone decided to play real bands?:tsmile:

Yeah my Dad instilled a love of music in me... he has this massive LP collection (somewhere around 2,000-2500 records if i had to ballpark it!) But my Dad was the Aerosmith fan which is why I went to that show. I vaguely remember it to be honest. I think "What it Takes" is probably my favourite tune from that era.
I lost Dad about 5 years back so... I don't know if he ever heard of Miley Cyrus. He was still listening to Robert Palmer, Eric Clapton, and Tom Petty. I think he'd "given up" on the music of today
Boingo... great stuff. I also like "Not My Slave"... such a great song. I have a memory of that Boingo show but really just at the start... Elfman was wearing a t-shirt and came out banging on these big bongos... crazy stage props and what not. I remember being somewhat perturbed to be frank. Dad was a fan, which is why I went to that show with him. Man... thank God for Pops, or I'd have never gone to any shows ;)
Hard to say what songs would fit with TMNT nowadays... I like the idea that Elfman could do some tunes for a newer movie/series. But hey, I'm still one of those holding out hope that one day we'll get another live-action Turtles flick like the 1st one
Bauer536

Yep. That’s from “Pump”. That’s a great song, too. I wasn’t into their material that much after that, but I loved their later hit “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”:tsmile:
I’m sorry about your dad. Mine is into that music, but he needs to be exposed right now to a few new talents. He likes Lady Gaga, but I hope he’ll get into Adele.:twink:
:tcool:Oh yeah. You gotta love Elfman. Still, why didn’t they perform “Weird Science?” They perform everything else, except that one post-Dead Man’s Party album. Why? Did they hate or get tired of the song?:tconfuse:
Hey. I’m excited for this new film in production . . . even though Michael Bay is involved. Still, I may enjoy this one because it’s not as boring as Transformers was for me. I can take robots only if the turtles are fighting them, or if Schwarzenegger comes in to save the day.:tlol: What I’m really looking forward to is the Nick cartoon. So far, I’m loving the direction it’s going in. Now to end things: I’m hoping we get a tint of Aerosmith or Björk in a new series someday. A man can dream, can't he?:twink:
