I know, old news. But still, every video game forum's gotta have a good Halo 2 discussion thread. So here ya go.
Doesn't this game rock?

I don't want to ruin this thread, I'm really just asking: What exactly is so good about Halo 2? I haven't played it myself but the videos I saw didn't look all that interesting. What's so special or innovative about its gameplay?

You have to play it to understand Barkworm. BTW we basically discussed the crap out of this game on the old forum, so chances are this thread will die rather quickly.

I couldn't adjust to the dual analog. I'm just too spoiled on the ole reliable lock on and fire. :D :P

How is lock on spoiling? It seems like it takes out a lot of skill.
Locking on is for those games that don't really require skill for combat, like Metroid Prime. I mean, most of the time I skip the enemies, anyway. It's the bosses that I have to fight. Dual analog for a game like that would be pretty tough. I don't know how I'd be able to do it. Plus, Samus has that badass suit, she has to have lock-on. :D

Yeah I myself am kinda wondering whats new about this game. I saw Duel weilding but thats been done before, Ive seen swords but thats been done before. The aliens look cool and some of the stuff you fly around in but in the last game I pretty much crashed it alot not because it was hard to control but because the enemy was being a jerk! I was going to rent this to see why everyone is so excited about it but I guess unless your a fan of the series you probly wont enjoy it. I played the first one several times just to see what it was like and why everyone liked it. I liked the aliens and the story was cool but there wasnt much new to it. Though I did enjoy punching my friends in the back of the head and killing them

Unless you've played it, don't make assumptions. The duel wielding and sword play are completely different from other games that have used them. I can't even recall a game that's used anything similar to the Elite Plasma Sword actually. It will also appeal to people who aren't just fans of the series. There's nothing ground breaking, or new about it. I don't know where people even come across information regarding at as being such.
How many games are innovative or ground breaking today?
Let's just look at the winners of Gamespots Game of the Year awards.
Best Action Adventure - GTA: SA. Innovative? Not one bit. Ground breaking? Not at all. Best Fighting - MK: Deception. Innovative? No. Ground breaking? Not even close. Best RPG - Paper Mario: tTYD. Innovative? Not really. Ground breaking? No. Game of the Year? World of Warcraft, yet another MMORPG. Innovative or ground breaking? I doubt it.
So those are just some examples. These games are, in most ways, more of the same. Not to say it's bad obviously, because those games wouldn't win GotY awards if they didn't deserve it, so why is it that Halo 2 has to be innovative or ground breaking to be good? It's just more of the same, with some big improvements and gameplay additions, and with Halo, more of the same is a damn fine thing, because it is one of the best FPS's ever made. The problem is people judge before they actually get first hand experience with the game, so you play it and don't think it's anything special? That's fine, because to you it must be true, and that should be good enough for anyone with half a brain. At least I play games before I criticize them.
This should apply to any game, ever. Except for like...Off Road Trucking 99' or some sh*t like that.

And DMC sucks to alot of people, they say its to hard, they dont like the syle, or it just doesnt appeal to them at all haha I dont care if anyone dislikes it because I like it so it doesnt matter to me what other people think of it
Haha atleast my favorite game isnt Superman 64 or Tonic Trouble

I'm gonna agree with Peanut, most games aren't really ground breaking... but I really like Halo 2, mostly cause I find it easy to just pick up and play and you can get really deep and hard core into it if you really like it... I don't really know why its so incrediblely popular though... mind you I hate GTA and its like the best selling game of all-time...

Correction - The highest (non pack-in) selling game of all time is Super Mario Bros. 3 with a grand total of 18 million copies. Halo 2, GTA, and Snake Eater combined can't touch that number.

Basically, what makes Halo and it's sequel so addictive is the multiplayer. It's just that simple. The single player campaigne is good and all, but once you finish it, that's enough. Not really any reason to go back. But multiplayer is just plain sweet! It's like it can never get old for some reason. What makes this game so revolutionary (ok, moreso regarding the first Halo than Halo 2) is the fact that it's the first really great FPS for a console. Of course this is more about the Xbox's controller than the game itself, but still it's got 16 player multiplayer, 4 players on a single television (as opposed to games like Counter Strike (1 player per screen), Return to Castle Wolfenstein (also 1 player per screen), and Mechassault (2 players per screen). I have no idea whatsoever why anyone would make a game for the Xbox that doesn't allow 4 player split-screen after Halo did it. It's just plain crazy to think that anyone even has the space in there house to accomodate 16 tv's and 16 xbox rigs to play a game like CS or RtCW. Halo makes this all possible with only 4 tv/xbox setups. That is what makes Halo so revolutionary, and that is why people have been playing Halo since its release back in 2001. No other console has a controller that enables FPS gameplay like the Xbox's.
And as for lock-on targeting... that's just plain wrong. It takes zero skill! That's what makes games like Halo so fun is that it requires a great amount of skill and precision in order to be really good at the game and hold your own in multiplayer competition. Auto-aim sucks. (Although Halo does have a slight aim assist, though nearly unnoticable, to account for the precision of a mouse and keyboard that just can't be found in a controller.)

Okay, what you must realize is that games with lock-on are not multiplayer games. Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer is nothing special, but Halo 2's single player is nothing special. The games were made for two seperate things. Game with lock-on are not wrong, they're just made to place the emphisis on exploration rather than combat.
And how is Halo the first "good" console FPS? What about Goldeneye, Timesplitters, Quake, and all the others that came before. There'd be no Halo without them.
Lock-on is not wrong. You have to play games that use it to realize why it's not wrong. Halo wouldn't work with lock-on, but Metroid wouldn't work with dual stick aiming. Each game is made for different things entirly.

I've never understood how anyone could say the single player was nothing special. The AI in both games are extraordinary. Before Halo, the only FPS I would play were GoldenEye and Quake, and both of those got boring after awhile, because the single player seemed like it was always the same. But with the Halo games, I've never had any problem playing through the single player games over and over because they're never the same. The AI is just unbelievably intelligent, and I love how I'm always hearing new things from the marines and the covenant. And aside from the AI, the story is freakin' incredible for a FPS. Brodie's just mad about the ending. 8)

I got an Xbox along with the Halo 2 collectors edition for Christmas and after playing it for hours(beat story mode), I have to say, I don't see what everybody loves about this game. Sure it was fun, but I had just as much fun if not MORE fun playing Rainbow Six 3 or Call of Duty: Finest Hour, if not more fun.

Probably because it's your prefrence. Personally I think Halo 2 is a ton better than RS3, even though RS3 is a super kick ass game. As for Call of Duty: Finest Hour...well it's just horrible.

I love Halo 2. It's so awesome
The story mode is excellent. The levels on Earth are fantastic, with the whole driving about. Especially in the tunnels, taking down shadow tanks while going along or in the scorpion, blasting your way through everything. I love the 2nd and 3rd level and the fantastic design, you can jump in a warthog and have the AI drive you about fine (although if they do go wrong it's always hilarious). The ability to hijack other vehicles is great too. When you and your friend are on foot being attacked by elites on ghosts and a wraith tank is bombarding you so you nick a ghost charge at the wraith and nick that are just moments of pure gaming bliss
Yes you need to play this game in multiplayer. The story mode is good (especially with driving (or flying) and shooting sections and the other mode is supersweet. I play with my 2 housemates and there's nothing better than crazy king. My friends said they prefer the original Halo multiplayer but there are a few points to consider. One is possibly the stupidest guy alive and gets his butt kicked on either version and the other is a model, smart like zoolander too, and also gets his butt whooped on this version where he used to win on the previous version.
The new game has so many great features that puts it above any other FPS I've ever played.

I seriously doubt that. Unless Bungie has said something, don't believe it.

All I've heard is that if you complete the game on legendary then a message comes up during the credits which says 'Tuesday February 10th' or some day and date. And that the next time that day of the week on that day of the month occurs is in 2010. If that makes sense from my poor explanation

It makes sense, but Bungie confirmed that it was a hoax. I don't believe anything unless Bungie says it.

No problem. A lot of people got caught up in that thing. I thought it was real at the start as well. Of course all the people who had claimed to see it never had a picture or video proving it's exsistance. That did it for me, and when Bungie announced it was a hoax my thoughts were confirmed.

I didn't entirely believe it but then a lot of people I know were saying so. I thought it would seem odd to make people wait that long for a follow-up
