I'm not sure if I understand your question.

I understand the Re....Wii controller can detect which way it is pointing, where it is being swinged, and all kinds of motion sensing stuff, but I really don't understand why it needs the ability to detech how far away it is from the system. How does that effect the controls of a game? What purpose does that serve? Meh, probobly not important anyway.

Could be used for all kinds of things, like throwing a ball or using a bow and arrow. Brings a new depth to things, excuse the pun. It seems really impractical though. We'll see in a couple of days I guess.

I just read the Wii-bit. And I think Revolution sounds better, but then again, I liked Ultra 64 for a name... so I don't count.
Anyways, does the name have a meaning? All I could come up with was Wii being the latin plural of the word Wus, which is an insult with a typo. And since I doubt that Nintendo wants to insult all the players, it must be something else.

It's a play on the word 'we'. I've also heard that it stands for Wireless Interactive Interface, but that's probably just a rumor.

Like ive said ii = good in Japanese, and some other stuff related to the japanese, not too sure what, but its to catch it's japanese audience, they know we will buy it here in North America no matter the name.
The reputation of Nintendo in Japan isn't all that high anymore. The portables such as DS and Advance do pretty well in Japan, but not the consoles. I watch a lot of Japanese TV, and every time they show a kid's room, he/she has a PS2. Let's face it, they love their RPG's. Nintendo is going to have a hard time appealing to their own people.

Like I've said, sword fighting or even melee attacks of any other kind, like pistol whipping. Moving the controller closer will mean being able to stab the sword forward. Your static position on your couch, or whatever, would mean a normal position for your sword/weapon. Moving the controller forward would thrust the sword forward or smack someone over the head with your gun in a FPS. It does have applications.

Uhhh, yeah. We beat IGN to that story a long while back. Black and white with some colored effects here and there, ala Sin City. Frankly, the game sounds amazing and they look like the new Silicon Knights. We should get some amazing games out of them. We should get a couple of good games out of them before they defect and run with Xbox 360 with their new experience and popularity.
They've clarified. It's not along the lines of Sin City, but more of the Noir films of, i think, the 30's.
Just think of an old black and white movie, but moodier, and not hyped up on 'cool' like Sin City was.

Gamecube price drop's comming at E3, apparently.
Gamespot's got info from an EB Games employee of new sinage for Gamecube that has the words "New Lower Price!" on them, and spots for employees to write in the price.
Could we see a $50-$75 Gamecube?
To go with this, Amazon.com is posting a May 15th launch of Twilight Princess.
I'm not going to get excited, because I don't think they know what they're talking about.
But if Gamecube drops to $50-75, and TP comes out at the same time... That could be pretty huge.
Also keep in mind that New Super Mario Bros. comes out on the 15th as well, and we all know Nintendo likes to ship games at the same time to cut costs. Imagine, going into the store to pick up Zelda AND Mario at the same time. </nerdgasm>
Oh, and I haven't been around much lately because I messed up the slave/master setup on my computers drives, and have just been too damn lazy to **** with it.

I don't see why anyone would buy a GameCube now when the Wii is only a couple of months away. IGN's Matt Cassamassina posted in his blog that it will be out in October.
About Zelda: I'm pretty sure that it won't be out in May. There are a lot of official release lists for the first two quarters around and Zelda is not on it. I agree that it would be pretty sweet though. I was convinced that I'd never play the game on the Cube.
Mecha Cow
05-02-2006, 12:22 PM
The Gamecube price drop is probably just for people who just want to play Zelda but don't want to buy a newly released console at full price. Looking at it that way, it's a good move.
And no way in hell is Zelda coming out this 15th.
Kid Icarus
05-02-2006, 02:56 PM
Hell, if you didn't own a Gamecube, but lets say there were a few games you wanted to try out... woulden't you pick on up for $50? That's a freaking impuls buy price point right there, big time.
It also makes me think Wii is going to be pretty cheap.
ThirdMarioBro

I'm still playing Zelda on my Cube, and then again on my Revolut....Wii. I have got to quit doing that. No way in hell it's comming on May 15th though.

Small animals will die and throats will be slit if I don't get my fu*king hands on that game. 15 years is too long. I WANT TO STOMP GOOMBAS. I haven't stomped a Goomba since Super Mario 64. Seriously, those new videos on New SMB.com are unbelieveable. The sounds, the music, the original style is back (a big gripe for me as of late), and everything just feels like a true red blooded Nintendo game. Fu*k Zelda, New SMB is my most anticipated game ever right now.
Fu*k Zelda...I can't believe someone especially you TMB would say that.
But I too want this game so bad. I really don't know if I can wait another 2 weeks.

Absoultey...i got my cube around christmas because of tremendous deal at gamestop or one of those places that included an extra controlelr, mem card, metroid prime (first cube ever played and LOVED IT) and zelda...so you're definately right that some people, like ps/XB players might wanna drop a little change to try their hand at some of the few great cub games...

12 days until Mario ships... 14 days until I actually get to play the damn thing.
I need to go reserve it, now that I think of it. I'll do that on Saturday.
And the computer's ****ed. I'm going to have to reinstall Windows AGAIN. It boots me off right after I log in to any user account. I know it's nothing to do with the hardware, because it all ran fine in Safe Mode. ****ing XP. No wonder it's the smiley face of death.
Anyway, it HAS to be fixed for E3. I work on a college campus, and I'm taking Tuesday and Wednesday off next week (gotta love end of the year vacation time...). If I don't get to read all the E3 info instantly, people will die. DIE I say, DIE. >_>.
Hell, I'm going to put Ubuntu on there. Screw Windows.

And if that was about Gamecube, well then... sorry? I dunno. Email Nintendo and complain would be about all you can do.

The music is definately Mario 64. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I would have liked to see some classic remixes of songs. On "On The Spot" I thought I heard the classic Super Mario Bros. 3 song. The one that's in generic levels. I can never really tell, because the sound is usually impossible to hear.

So, as spectators, what do we want to see in Nintendo's E3 press confrence?
1) Reggie, kicking ass, taking names, and talking about their Wii.
2) Miyamoto showing off his new IP, and talking about their Wii.
3) Iwata spouting off some olmost Yamauchi-like babble about nothing at all, and talking about their Wii.
Oh. And I want to at least hear about a new Kid Icarus. >_>
Peanut
05-05-2006, 12:47 PM
I guess. Kid Icarus really wasn't that good of a game. I don't understand why so many people clamour for a new one. Especially considering about 80% of the people who say there should be a new one, probably never even played the first.
As for what I want from the Nintendo Conference.
1) Some wicked sweet trailers for Wii games. I.E. Smash Bros, Mario.
2) Some awesome announcements for the DS.
3) Firm release date for Zelda.
4) Some big surprise to make us all go "OH SNAP!"

Kid Icarus
05-07-2006, 01:13 PM
I'm not complaining, but it seems silly that they would even expect a Mario platformer to last much longer then a few hours.

Here we go... the news is starting to roll in.
Time Magazine demos Wii! http://www.planetgamecube.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=28&threadid=15882

ThirdMarioBro
05-07-2006, 03:38 PM
The game is longer than Super Mario Bros 3. That's long enough for me by a long shot. Just because 2D platformers can be beaten somewhat easily by people of our skill level dosen't mean the game is short. They gave us pleanty of variety. Also, the Mario Bros 3 "Boom Boom fortress battle music" was played when fighting Boswer on the bridge. The Super Mario All-Stars SMB theme was played somewhere but I can't remember when. It's a solid mixture of classic arrangments, and new material. I'm glad for the new material because this seems to be the first new Mario music since SM64 that has good new music (Sunshine's music blew). I know it's good because it got jammed in my skull and I've been humming it since I heard it.
No Benvenuto, I wasn't lying about the new Battletoads. Rare has been dropping hints for eons now, but you know how they are. They love to fu*k with their fanbase. As for the game, we'll see I guess. Just for reference, they dropped hints about Banjo Kazooie 3, and that's about to be confirmed. KI3 also seems to be in the priliminary stages, and that's been hinted at since Banjo-Tooie.
Well, Wario Ware Wii was always a given, but FU*K YEAH anyway. One thing off my list. It's going to be teriffic to see Intelligent Systems do a full fu*ked up console game production of the best new series last gen.
Just a note, I'm not dead. Just dead tired. No sleep in two days. Anyway, this is the last day before the hell week of work begins. I got a new 8 Mega-pixel camera, so I'll take all kinds of pictures for you guys. I'll also try out that new Sonic game for 360 and see if Sega fu*ks it up. There are an assload of DS announcements about to hit the fan, and as for Wii......I think I'll just take a tent and camp out in the booth for keeps. Fu*k PS3. It looks to be appointment only. I saw Nintendo's Trailer caravan outside the expo. They had 15 simi's and that was only setting up the last of their booth crap. They've spent millions to cover the whole downtown LA area with all kinds of Viral Wii marketing and billboards. The floor is being painted with their advertisements, and they're fighting with Sony for the remaining ad space (and outbidding them on most of it). Nintendo's apprently fu*king serious about buying and owning this E3 like no other. They're press conference will be held in the biggest hall of the Kodak theatre, the very same you see the Academy Awards in, and Sony's been kicked out of the Staples Center and back to Sony Pictures Studios where they'll apprently be doing their show in a controlled environment tomorrow afternoon. Pictures of Wii games (and all kinds of other sh*t) will probobly start leaking onto the internet around 1:00AM tomorrow night when the Disclosure agreements run out. Nintendo's still managed to keep it all secret, but that's mostly out of curtosey to them because the unveiling is so close. Everybody (including us) has some exclusive info to unveil about the system, but they would all (me included) would be sued to hell and back if we said anything (I don't know a terrible lot except confirmation of something kickass we've all long suspected would hit with the system. That = good thing. The rest of it is being kept under wraps by one trusted staffer Nintendo likes).
Point of all this is, I can tell now that Nintendo is going to own E3. Peter Moore is throwing childish "Sega-like" insults around. That's a sign of fear. Sony hasn't said a goddamn thing (though expect them to go balistic at their press unveiling with bit announcements, don't expect to be suprised by much).
I guarntee you will not be disapointed this time. Also yes, the runors are true. Twilight Princess has been COMPLETELY overhauled.

Best platformer ever. Also, Gametrailers.com will have a live stream of the Nintendo Press Conference free. AMN is thinking of doing it, but there are technical problems. Kid Icarus
05-10-2006, 04:55 PM
802.11b.
Go with a G router though, and avoid A like the freaking plauge.
Checkout http://www.nintendowifi.com for a list of routers that'll work well with the DS.
Oh, and when you *do* hook it all up, make sure all of your firewalls are off.
Thanks!:D Yeah, I checked out my laptop and it uses G, and can also work with B. I'm guessing from that and your post that the DS works with G too, so I'll be sure to get that.
About the hooking it up part; do you mean I should turn off my firewall, then set it up, then I can turn my firewall back on? I use Norton Internet Security 2006 on my desktop and laptop.

I don't think they would do that. The release games' sale numbers always suffer from bundles. Just look at the DS launch, the hardware sales were great but the software sales not so much, just because of the Metroid Demo and Picto Chat.
Kid Icarus
05-15-2006, 07:29 AM
You don't think that also might have been because all but two of the launch games sucked, do you?
NES and SNES sure didn't hurt much from bundled in games. Infact, I think with them targeting the non-gamer market they just might. Wii Sports and Duck Hunt are pretty simple games that pry arn't taking up many resources (My guess is they're making the new code monkeys make them).
Mecha Cow
05-15-2006, 08:15 AM
I think bundling the console with Wii sports would be a great move as it would serve as a good introduction to the console. The whole game screams 'Tech demo' anyway, so I can see it happening too.
*E* Thanks TMB. :)
Peanut
05-15-2006, 11:07 AM
Yeah, I think Wii Sports needs to be bundled with the console. It's a cool concept and all, but why am I going to go out and pay all that money for a game that looks like a fleshed out tech demo?
The same goes for the orchestra game. I don't see that possibly being a stand alone title, to be honest. Most of the rhythm games you play are made awesome by the cool perphs you get with it, but with this one you're just using the wiimote. Duck Hunt I could see as a full release though. Bundled with the Zapper attachment of course.
What would be really awesome is if they put Super Mario Galaxy and Duck Hunt on the same disc. Then had a little title screen to choose which one you wanted to play when you load it up.
I don't want to deviate from this conversation, but I'm about to do something terrible. I've done terrible things on this forum, but what I'm about to do is beyond anything I've ever done. I'm about to steal everyone's childhood away.

Nintendo was about the only company with Swag worth a damn this year, and they made you work your ass off to get it. You had to stand in line for New SMB and beat people in the multiplayer mode to get the swag. Surfice, my old sch00l skillz got you guys some swag, so no worries :D :D
I also got some good Sega sh*t for 'ya too. I don't think anybody would want those PS3 lanyards Sony was handing out (I got a lot collecting PS3 hatred quotes from random people), but if you guys want them, just shout out.

You notice how the more you play this game, the more it seems like the last Mario platformer came out yesterday, and you feel like you're a seven year old again, back before you gave a damn about gameplay versus graphics and the technical merits of game design? Back you all you cared about was fun?
That's how this game makes me feel. Like a kid again. I love Mario.
Peanut
05-16-2006, 05:39 PM
I've noticed that.
Anyways, there is one thing I'm a bit disappointed in. The music isn't as good as I had hoped. The main theme is alright. Nothing special. It plays in just about every "normal" level though, so it's starting to bug me. Definately nowhere near as good as the other Mario platformers.
ThirdMarioBro
05-16-2006, 06:02 PM
Well, personally I fell in love with the theme myself. Humming it nonstop, and can interchance it with the classic stuff. *shrugs*
Until I get home, here are some E3 pics from one of my fellow staffers, Matthew Green. Enjoy.

I just don't feel it has that same kind of "classic" feel as the music in the other games. The game itself certainly has classic Mario feel in SPADES, but the music...I don't know. There's just something about it. It could be that it sounds a little un-inspired. Like the music in Princess Peach.
This isn't to say the music in the game is bad. It's not. I just wish it was as hummable as the other Mario themes. Sitting here right now, I can't remember any of the songs from the game. Much like the songs in Princess Peach. Once I finished playing, I couldn't remember them for the life of me.

Do you like the addition of the wall-kick move? I think it's awesome...until you don't want to use the f*cking thing. I don't know how many times that move has caused me to fall and lose a ton of progress through a level, come close to killing me, or killing me out-right. Everytime I get near a wall and don't want to kick, what happens? PING! Off the wall, into some lava.
The game does get pretty tough as you move along. I'm in World 6 and I've died about 5 times on the castle. Mostly thanks to the wall-kick, though. Sigh. It's not so bad in the earlier levels, but it's a pain in the ass in the castles, where you need some precise jumping and falling to the lava is an automatic death.
Edit: Make that 7 times! F*CKING WALL-KICK!
Edit: OK....F*CK! 15 straight deaths in this castle. Wall-kick deaths = 14 Stupidity = 1

You know, I can see a lot of developers doing stuff like that. PS3 *is* going to be insanely expensive to develop for, and with the group they're aiming at if the graphics are cutting up some new ground the game's gonna flop.
I could see Mega Man controlling like this: C to jump, B to fire, and either the analog or Dpad to move. Whee.
Or hell, turn the controller on it's side and use it NES style.

I beat the game last night. World 8 has a cool twist in it. The special "unlockable", The ability to play as Luigi by holding down L and R while selecting a file, really isn't anything of the sort. It's not really a problem that there aren't any little "special" things in the game, it is a Mario game after all. We all know some of those secrets in the previous Mario games didn't come out until a ways down the road, though, so who knows.

I agree. It does look half assed. Paper Mario was never the most visually amazing game as it was, but with such an awesome battle system, that's forgivable. Now that it seems like the battle system has been tossed in favour of a 2d side scrolling mechanic, they should have done something to spice it up. It looks ugly and bland.
Who knows. Cheap cash in or another great Mario title? We won't know until we hear more I suppose. Although, at this time, I'm leaning towards the former.

Okay, let's break it down.
Twilight Princess on Gamecube
-------------------------------
Wasn't at E3, but I played it at a Nintendo after party. Pretty much exactly what you'd expect. Wind Waker setup and all that.
Twilight Princess on Wii
-------------------------------
For the first five minutes you play it, it's hell. After that, it all clicks and you're in heaven. The control is VERY different from the Gamecube version, even though the games are identical in every way, altough the Wii version runs at a higher resolution and has no framerate issues according to Nintendo (not a big deal on Gamecube, trust me). There are no texture difference between the two versions. Just better resolution. The walking and Z-Targeting is handled with the nunchucku, and the sword slashing is on the A-button on the remote. You want to do a spin? Yank the remote back and right. Want to do a shield shove to stun the enemy? Yank the nunchucku around. Hookshot? Point ad shoot, simple as that. It's hard as hell to discribe, I know. Imagine writing a damned writeup on how a Wii game works (ugh), but trust me, the Wii version is superior. The controls wern't half-assed. They really planned this out, and it works, but the two games are IDENTICAL in terms of content.
Hell, the fishing is so good, you could sell it on that alone, but the whole Wii version maintains that level of high control all the way through, even in boss fights. It works. Just don't expect to pick up and get into it immediately. You gotta take time to adjust to the setup. I had booth babes helping me get the controls down fast in the time limit I had to play, but it'll take you longer. It's worth it though.
I'm going to buy both, but if can only get one, get the Wii version.
I know, that's a complete 180 of what I was saying a few months ago, but it's true. Wii for the win.
I wanna pet my Wii when I finally get it.
.....NO, NOT LIKE THAT, YOU PERVERTS.

Here's what I had to go through to get my hands on the Wii at E3. Now, imagine that stampede of around 8,000 people going on for a good thirty minutes, and the line wrapping clean around the Sony booth. Everybody who went into the West Hall was going stright to the Wii booth, and running like hell. At one point, I yelled "LOOK, IT'S MIYAMOTO!!!" and pointed away fro the line. About twenty dumbasses fell for it and I cut a good fifteen minutes off the wait.

I've been going back and forth b/w the DS & PSP and finally after looking at the prices and games i had basically decided on DS..when I saw they were coming out with the Lite, i was completely sold. i've NEVER been a handheld gamer but this system looks like it just might be able to turn me into one...

Plus PSP seems to have less games produced for it. That or their less known. And most games I have seen for it are bad ports of console games. Like Marvel Nemesis.
Peanut
05-22-2006, 07:28 PM
The cost of development for the PSP is higher, that's why the DS gets more games. Plus developers are going to have a bigger and more varied audience on the DS. Even GTA bombed on the PSP, which shows you how little success some of the lower tier games are going to get on it.

Peanut hit it on the head with the development fees.
Why spend $2,000,000 developing a handheld PSP title for a userbase nearly a third of the DS's, which the same game will cost you around $1,000,000 to make?
And the brilliant thing? Nintendo can still charge their high liscensing fees and get away with it, so long as their system remains popular and cheap to develop for.
That article on Smabro is awesome. He just become one of my favorite developers to read about.

its a bit weird for me how this conversion has slowly come over me...i mean, b4 last Christmas, i had only played PS & PS2 for the last few years and absolutely knew i'd be getting a PS3 when it came out...then i get the Cube for Christmas and start smashing away at Prime and now Wind Waker (with RE4 waiting in the wings)...i then dusted off the old the 8-bit and have started up a season in Super Tecmo Bowl and playing some Ninja Gaiden in b/w..now Im looking forward to getting the DS and at this point it seems like a forgone conlclusion that I'll be getting a Wii before PS3!!! I don't know if yall can understand what im tryin to say here, but in just the course of a year (last christmas to the coming holiday season) my whole gaming world has been/will be flipped upside down...and it seems ive come full circle back to Nintendo...whodathunkit...

Eternal Darkness (for the love of all that's holy, you NEED this game)
Zelda: 4 Swords (dont' expect to take advantage of the multiplayer... but the single player's pretty well balanced out)

Paper Mario is amazing, definately one of the best Cube games. Also try out Super Mario Sunshine and even Luigi's Mansion. Two games that took way too much flak. They're both really really fun, no idea why they got such a bad wrap. The Pikmin series is another awesome one to check out, really cool premise in that game. There's also Star Fox Adventures (another one that took a bad wrap), and if you dig Star Wars, look into the Rouge Squadron games. There's a ton of gold on the Cube, you just need to look for it.

So, more Wii talk...
People on the Planetgamecube forums brought up a pretty interesting point regarding price.
Casual gamers arn't going to want to have to buy extra controlers, attachments, or VC controlers... So we're looking at Nintendo possibly having to include 2 each of Wiimotes, analog attachments, and VC controlers.
I think Wii isn't going to be so cheap anymore.

I dunno. I could see it being 40. There's a lot of technology in that little remote, not to mention the two forms of wireless in it (IR and Bluetooth)
Then the two analog sticks, and two of the VC controllers. Like I said, the casual gamers arn't going to be as willing to go out of their way to buy more attachments.
It still should come out to be less then a 360 though. Maybe they'll have two setups. Seems like everyone and their dogs are doing that now. One with all the extra controllers and Wii Sports, and another one with just two controllers and Mario... If Wii Sports isn't a pack in it's going to be a budget title. No way are they going to be able to charge full price for that.

Not to get off topic here, but i often see reference to "casual gamer" on here...such as casual gamer wont want this or do this or whatever...i can obviously get the idea of what a "casual gamer" is but I just wanted to know how yall considered it (i.e amount of time spent, systems owned, etc.- whatever's important)
Peanut
05-23-2006, 10:35 AM
I don't even think it depends on hours spent gaming, or even systems owned. Casual Gamer is such a corporate term anyways. I don't enjoy using it, but it does get the point across rather well.
Really, casual gamers are the dudes who just straight up go buy whatever console is the coolest and play all the big games they hear about it. They don't go to Gamespot or IGN and look up games. They don't go into EB on a regular basis, if it all. They won't try a new game concept. They go for the brands and not the experience. Case in point, 50 Cent Bulletproof and 25 to Life being huge sellers. They're complete garbage. Meanwhile you have an amazing game like ICO getting no love at all. All of the "hardcore gamers" and gaming press totally dug that game, but because the Playstation has such a large "casual gamer" fanbase, it sold like complete trash. They do these things because they don't know/care about videogames as more than a passing form of entertainment.
And GWG, I don't see them packaging a million things in with the Wii. Nintendo has never been known one to do something like that, and I doubt they'll start now. There will probably be special bundles at places like EB and Wal-Mart where you get 2 controllers and a 2 games along with the console for a special price, but that won't be Nintendo's doing.
I'm guessing the basic Wii package will pan out as such.
Nintendo Wii Console
1 Wii Remote with Analog Attachment
1 VC "Classic" Controller
Wii Sports (Pack-in)
However, I can see bundles coming out of big retailers that look like this.
Nintendo Wii Console
2 Wii Remote's with Analog Attachments
1 VC "Classic" Controller
Wii Sports (Pack-in)
1-2 Wii games
I also don't picture the analog attachment being sold seperatly from the Wii Remote. It just doesn't make sense. $30-$35 USD for a Wii Remote and attachment is my bet. There's also really no logical reason for them to make you buy more than one of the "Classic" controllers. There really is no reason for them to make you even buy one at all, as Gamecube controllers will work with the Wii anyways. The VC controller may not even be included in the package when you buy the console.

The Wizard is a movie(coughcommercialcough) about two brothers who travel to California to play in the Nintendo World Championships. They meet the lead singer from Rilo Kiley on the way, before she started that band, and they have fun talking about Zelda on top of a motorhome.

I was reading this Game Informer I got for free when I traded in a bunch of games and they had 360 on one page and on the next PS3 and Wii next to each other. In quotes it said this under each of them
360 "This console already has the momentum, Microsoft just needs to steer it in the right direction"
PS3 "For many people, Playstation has become synonymous with video games"
Wii "I fear that many Revolution titles will feature the same standard gmaeplay with a few motion senor gimmicks"
The article about the Wii was pretty much bashing the Gamecube and N64 saying it has crappy 3rd party support and then says that them getting it for the Wii is too little to late.
Do they get paid to bash Nintendo? Or are they just helpless Sony fanboys?
