I'm a jaded old bastard, but when I popped in that movie I got a bit teary eyed because it.

I got that same reaction when I last watched the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. I dunno, I just remembered watching that movie with my older brother when I was four or five. I guess it just reminds you of the good old hazy days when things were simple and your whole life revolved around NES and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That's not to say my life right now is more complicated than anyone else's -- I'm not a federal agent on 24-hour missile command, don't get me wrong. But it's still nice to return to those glorious old days.

Yoshi's Island DS got a relatively sh*tty review in the latest EGM (6.5 / 8.0 / 6.0)... :|

Mecha Cow
11-09-2006, 08:29 AM
Isn't EGM supposedly very harsh or something? Either way, I kind of expected this.

*E* I just read some impressions and they are fairly positive. Is there hope after all?

I guess I'm not terribly familiar with EGM's rating system, what do each of the numbers represent?

Peanut
11-09-2006, 09:31 AM
Different reviewers. The three guys who reviewed it were on the 1up Show last friday. Their only problem was that there's a gap in the screen. Apparently it looks, plays and sounds like Yoshi's Island, except it's harder! They even said all that stuff, but they couldn't get over the one inch gap in the screen. Just listening to those two idiots gang up on Shane, who's usually a Sony fanboy anyways, was pretty annoying.

Dr. Doom
11-09-2006, 09:35 AM
Well anyways, if you feel strongly enough about a game I wouldn't let reviews get in the way. Dirge Of Cerberus got a big fat 6.0 on Gamespot, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. It wasn't the greatest game I've ever played, but what's important was that it was fun.

EDIT: These are apparently some likely but unconfirmed additions to the VC lineup..

Kid Icarus

I'm not listening to any reviews on Yoshi's Island. The gap has been in just about every game that spans the screen, every rendered cinema, and I have no idea how it could hurt the game in this case.

Only thing I'm concerned about is the music. Everything else looks fine. I don't read EGM reviews anyway. Half the time I don't think they play the game at all before sh*tting on it.

Duke
11-09-2006, 12:57 PM
I noticed the gap in other DS games too. Personally, I don't like it but the gap alone doesn't make a game suck.

All the videos I've seen from the game just don't FEEL like Yoshi's Island to me and it's definitely not because of the dual screen. It simply doesn't look like it has the same charm. Even EGM's Shane who defended the game said that it wasn't as good as the SNES one. I have this slight fear that playing this thing will ruin the original game for me.

Mecha Cow
11-09-2006, 02:45 PM
Yeah, it's kind of weird that they'd give the rights to make a sequel to such a huge game to a (supposedly) really crappy studio like Artoon. It looks kind of rushed too. I hope the game turns out good none the less but I'm definitely going to wait for some more reviews before considering a purchase.

Sorry to sound offensive, but I gotta' say it.

To doubt the outcome of the game is fine, but how the hell could it ruin the original for you? That makes no sense. If some sh*tty band does a bad cover of a classic song, does it ruin the original? No. Just cast away the sh*tty cover and move on.

I wish some new videos of this game would be posted. The E3 build is kind of old, and I'd like to see it in motion again. The sound design bothers me. Visually, it looks like Yoshi's Island, and it controlled like Yoshi's Island, but if the music blows, then that kills it for me. Where the fu*k is Koji nowadays?

I know you do. :( It's one of those few precious titles in history. No glitches, no weird stuff, no flaws, no nothing. Just pure unadulterated innocence, gameplay, beauty, and most of all fun. Yoshi's Island is perfect.

I don't want anything messing with that either, but just take comfort in that. Even if this game bombs like a chili taco, remember they can't touch the original. Nothing can. You can't hurt perfection.

November 13, 2006 - In a curiously timed announcement, Sonic Solutions revealed it had been chosen by Nintendo to provide DVD movie playback on a future version of the Wii. According to the release, Nintendo plans to offer a new version of the Wii in the fall or winter of 2007. Sonic's CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator, a standard in DVD playback software, allows for anamorphic widescreen video, motion menus and alternate camera angles.

"To be involved in Nintendo's ground-breaking gaming console is extremely gratifying and a testament to the efficiency, flexibility and dependability of Sonic's technology," said Jim Taylor, senior vice president and general manager of Sonic's Advanced Technology Group. "Game consoles represent a fresh market and platform where we can introduce a new audience of potentially millions to the quality of our brand and the power of our digital media applications."

It is unknown if there is an add-on DVD player is also planned. If not, those who purchase a Wii this holiday would need to buy a brand new system next fall in order to enjoy DVDs.

With the Wii launch coming this Sunday, the announcement of an updated console shipping late next year doesn't seem very beneficial to Nintendo. But that won't stop us from lining up on launch day.

........ Why?

Dr. Doom
11-13-2006, 01:52 PM
This is a fairly standard practice for the industry. Look at how many versions of GBA there are. Hell, the DS Lite was announced only a short time after I got my regular DS. I don't need DVD playback on the Wii though. We already have like 4 DVD players in my house including my PS2. And they're kinda cheap nowadays anyhow.

Dinny

But in one of the IGN weeklies (edit: it's IGN Weekly 27), Matt was interviewing Perrin and asked about why there was no DVD playback, and she said exactly the same thing that you said.

Peanut
11-13-2006, 03:51 PM
Old news and big deal? Who the hell even cares about DVD playback anymore? You know what this is, just Nintendo stepping up to shut up all the idiots who complained when it was announced they were taking it out. How many god damn DVD players do we need? If you don't have a DVD player by this point, you probably aren't buying a Wii anyways.

Did anyone see that weird news special on next-gen console gaming in late 06? The Wii was gushed over. The PS3 was pretty much down-played as the "same old", but with new problems like over heating and a steep pricetag. I thought the over heating thing wasn't true though? Who knows, but this is making it worse for those of us trying to get our hands on a Wii on launch day. Apparently Forbes had a huge glowing review of the Wii as well. With all the mainstream press it's getting, we might actually have some competition come November 19th.

Just so everyone knows, I'm doing the over night camp out thing. I'll have a laptop and use the wireless internet from either of the three places that have it in the area. Live Wii camp out blogging!

 WTF?

We've got some Japan PS3 numbers here.

Total Hardware Sales: 81,639 PlayStation 3 60 GB: 45,774 PlayStation 3 20 GB: 35,865

Ridge Racer 7: 21,654
Mobile Suit Gundam: Target In Sight: 21,309
Resistance: Fall of Man: 13,545
Genji: Days of the Blade: 8,766
Sega Golf Club: 1,410

This is the harsh part:
PS3's Sold = 81,639
Software Sold = 66,684
Consoles purchased without software = 14,955

That's just ridiculous. The PS3 is bringing out the greed in everyone all over the world. It completely disgusts me.

Is anyone else disturbed and creeped out by the PS3 ad on tv that shows the baby doll?:D J/K.

Their slogan is "play beyond", but with the $600 price tag I think it should be changed to "pay beyond." If someone bought the $600 version of the PS3 and 2 games for it, they would have to pay over $700.

Also, who wants Resistance: Fall of Man when you can play Gears of War?

Yoshi's Island DS got a relatively sh*tty review in the latest EGM (6.5 / 8.0 / 6.0)... :|

I really hope no one took those ratings seriously. If you look anywhere else, the game got much better reviews (Gamespot gave it a 9.1). I got it last night and it's incredible. I'm loving everything about it. I don't read EGM, so I don't know what all of the complaints were, but the "gap" between the screens is hardly a problem. You have the option of scrolling up or down to view the entire background. The new features with the addition of extra characters/babies and new abilities really adds something to the game, without changing the overall gameplay. It definitely feels like Yoshi's Island, no question. Seriously, I hope people give this one a chance! We need more (old school) games out there like this one. Shredder's Rating: 9.5

^^Truth. The guys at EGM who gave it bad scores are both morons. And I don't say that because they severely under rated the game, but because they just don't know anything about games. Everytime I hear them talk on the 1up podcasts, or on the 1up Show, I usually cry a little.

And yeah, they're big complaint on the 1up show was about the gap in the screen.

Time for a story.

I went on an excursion to Maine today, and got a call from a friend who is buddies with the manager at the EB where I preordered Zelda and the Wii. She tells me that the store was broken into, and robbed. The perps lifted the PS3's, and the Wii's, along with some PSP and DS ****. Took all the games too.

Aparently the people who did it drove their car into the back of the store, and busted the door.

Kinda ******.

But the EB is still having the midnight opening. Weird.

To top it off, right after, I got a call from the EB preorder machine, with a bumper by Reggie.

Why does God hate me?

TP snagged an 8.8 on Gamespot. They say some of the Wii elements feel tacked on and the sound and graphics sometimes "go from nostalgic to dated". Make of that whatever ya like. 8.8 is by no means a bad score, but lower than I was expecting, considering the excellent marks it had gotten on some other sites.

Also, from the reviews I've read so far of the Wii version of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, I'm really not quite sure what to do. Half of the reviews say the Wii controls are great, the other half say you're better off with the PS2 version. If anyone can come up with any insight on that issue I'd certainly appreciate it, but I obviously don't know how likely that'll be before sunday, and also considering that I don't know how many other people are even interested in it for the Wii.

Wow... Gamespot just gave Red Steel a 5.5/10.

http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/redsteel/review.html?sid=6162018

Does Gamespot have a bias against Nintendo or something? I wouldn't be too surprised if Red Steel did suck. That lack of bloodshed bugged me for a while. It still does, actually.

"This is the first game that I have ever awarded a 10 in my six years as a reviewer, and for good reason. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is one of the defining videogames of our time. One of the defining videogames of our time? Wow.

It's comforting to see all the rave reviews for one of the Wii's top launch titles. If nothing else, it bodes well for the fate of first-party Nintendo games on the new platform.

Gamespot also gave Majora's Mask an 8.3, and it's one of the best games in the series. 'Tacked on' is not very comforting to hear about the Wii controls, though.

You guys...it's Jeff f*cking Gertsman! He does nothing but b*tch and complain! He's the very defintion of a jaded game journalist. The only things he likes are stuff no one else cares about. He gave WTF on PSP an 8. A game that takes the WarioWare style of play, makes the mini-games either endless or 5-10 minutes in length and makes you play them over and over to gain more un-inspired sh*t. He's doing this to stand out, as he usually does.

Okay, I'm back. First of all, last week was hell on earth. Hell. I'm not talking about it now. Maybe in a few days, but not now. Second of all, my family has been utter hell; so much so, that I don't even want to play my Wii right now, or maybe for the next few days. I'm not turning on this machine while pissed off, and with them around me right now, I'm nothing but pissed. Life is a mess, and I just don't want to talk about it.

Anyways, I drove for 16 hours, have been up over 36 hours, and am literally seeing stuff, but I just wanted to let everyone know I made it home, and made it home to Wii launch with some time to spare. I got to hang out with the launch group at Gamestop (30 people +), we all drank beer, played Rayman, threw cows (amazingly fun game btw), and talked gaming for a couple of hours. Paid off the Wii, picked it up with Zelda, Red Steel (SH*TTY controls, but what the hell), then Rayman because playing with the gang there sold me on it. It's just that fun (and those bunnies are retarded in such a good way). I didn't get my classic controller because they apparently haven't shipped yet, so big whoop. I'll deal with it later. I'm mad as hell because Nintendo (of course) didn't produce enough component cables, and they are sold out until December. Sounds like gamecube all over again. Whoopie.

I'm tired and run down, but I'd call that kind of drive to get my Wii pretty hardcore. Almost crashed twice from lack of sleep. Poor Peanut is out in the cold in Canada with below freezing temperatures with no midnight launch. He'll be there until 8AM. That's hardcore. He's number 15 in line, out of 35 and growing by the hour. It's a mess everywhere. The New York thing went down, Virtual Console is live, and everything is up and running except the news and weather channels I believe. I wrote this guide (http://wii.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=8198&pg=4&comments=full&preview=) on the VC games before I left, if anyone cares.

I also picked up Yoshi's Island DS since I had the cash on hand. I'll play it later. Haven't read any reviews, so I'm just running on faith there.

Glad everyone's doing okay. I'm not, but who cares. It's Wii day! GameCube is dead! Welcome to the next level everyone. We're living in a fresh, new age now, and the smell of new plastic is in the air.

My store got Wii's from other EB's, and had the launch thing. I got my Wii, and Zelda, but they apperently discontinued the memory stick for 512. So I had a 40 dollar credit, so I snagged a huge Link wall sticker, and a guide (And the guide is already paying for itself, jesus.)

Zelda is amazing, I love how when Link jumps in water, his hair gets dark and his clothes too, and they slowly go to their normal color. The weird side missions to get the game going are slightly more annoying than I remembered. But its fun. Not crazy about the sword play.

Wii Sports is way more fun than I imagined it would be.

After over 3 hours of gameplay my Wii didnt even feel hot or warm to the touch. I wish it could teach my 360 something.

I busted it open this morning. First of all, Zelda. It's the greatest game ever made. Getting that out of the way right now. Ocarina just got it in the ass. It took ten flipping years, but they just reamed Ocarina. Yeah, I see some GameCube textures here and there, but who cares. Anybody notice Nintendo has motion captured many of the characters? Smooth as silk animations. Also, all the people who complain about the "MIDI" (actually it's sampled...think SNES music) music from mister Kondo need to shut the hell up. The sampled score provides a flexibility and versatility that orchestrations can't provide. The full orchestra is good for cinemas where everything is prerecorded because events are predetermined. Samples (and MIDI) can change the score to suit the changing gameplay, and that works here in full effect. It adds to the adventure in a way prerecorded can't. Lesser sound quality than live stuff? Yes, or course, but the trade off is worth it for the enhanced interaction.

Besides, Nintendo has finally stopped abusing their old synth set they've been using for almost a decade (from Mario 64 all the way to Wind Waker, and some DS games). It's not that it sounds bad. I'm personally a fan of the sound, but it's overused, and they haven't gone the sample route since the days of the SNES. It's heartwarming to have that back now, finally.

I'm updating the VG section rules with some information about spoilers. Not everybody is very fast at games like this, and games like Zelda need spoilers to be highlighted out by matching their color to the forum background. This is a new rule, and those who don't follow are in deep sh*t. Thank you.

Oh, and has anybody played Yoshi's Island 2 yet? I'm about to dig into it later.I've been playing it on and off (mostly at work) for a few days now, and I've enjoyed it. But to be honest the gap between screens is retarded, and it actually takes away from the quality of gameplay. At first it was just annoying to not see flowers, red coins, etc. in the gap, but on levels w/ a moving screen it really sucks. Especially if you find yourself in the gap and lose track of where you are or where the next platform is. But despite that which was mentioned in the reviews, I have absolutely no complaints or regrets about buying it. And I'd still recommend it to others.

I was at my friend's house all night playing Wii Sports, and we tried to buy some stuff this morning. No dice, though I did get an extra crontroller and TP outta the way. I'm gonna see what I can do as far as the next shipment to the Gamestop I'm now employed at goes.

Wii sports is a lot of fun, but there's really not much depth to it. Obviously yer not gonna spend hours on end sitting there and playing it by yourself. But it's fun. The first thing I ever did on a Wii was bowl a strike. It was pretty awesome. Golf is kinda hard tho. We also played some Monkey Ball, the controls on that were kinda wonky. I dunno if it's the fault of the receiver or what. It seems to be rather unforgiving about recieving the signal from strange angles.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to it. Regardless of when I get it, I kinda have to wait until X-Mas to play it. I mean, I don't HAVE to, but...yeah. I dunno. We'll see what happens.

It actually matters very little. You just have to be in the right place and have your sensor bar settings configured correctly.

Even with all that, Red Steel still sucks the biggest dong ever.

I'm just curious; how exactly does it stick to the TV?

It doesn't have to. You can just put it where ever, it comes with a stand too. If you do want to stick it somewhere, it has to be on a flat surface. I always thought it faced outwards, but it actually lays on it's bottom and faces outwards, which is much better. I just used the double sided sticky crap that came with it to stick it on.

Gather 'round for a story, kiddos!

After a slight expliation... I've been away from here for a while. Work and some money problems were getting to me... so people on these boards were getting to me. No excuses, and I need to stop being such a whiny bitch. Moving on...

I decided to get a Wii at launch, with Zelda, despite what fears I had. Here's the story of waiting outside a store in freezing weather, dealing with drunken Best Buy employees, and a crazy hunt to find the money to pay for my system.

I help run our towns Pokemon Leauge (gotta make sure they're doing **** right, yanno?) from 1-5 every Saturday... I wasn't going to go, but I needed to do SOMETHING to keep my mind off of the fact that, in less then 12 hours, Wii was going to descend onto this barren industry and give it a good, harm, firm kick square in the balls.

I left there ten minutes early to scope out Wal*mart's line. Glad I did... I asked the store clerk if they were going to do anything for the midnight launch. "Yeah, but we've only got 19 systems, and about 30 some people in line in the garden center...". Thinking he's full of **** I go and look for myself. Yep. Line all the way around the inside of the center. Some people had apparently been there for a week. Sleeping bags, tents, and boxes of snack food lined with the people. "****ing christ!" my roommate said, who I dragged with me.

He was under the impression that people in Lincoln wouldn't line up for a Nintendo system, even though he admitted he's seen a lot of hype for it and heard a lot about it from his friends at school.

I speed home, drop him off, grab my chair and blanket, some water and snacks, and head off to Target. The store was supposed to give us people lining up for Wii free pop and popcorn, so I figured it was a score. There wasn't going to be a midnight launch though... we'd have to stay out there all night until they gave away tickets at 7AM.

I pull up and only see 4 people waiting. Surely that wasn't the line... Best buy was already 30-40 people thick. It was though. I grab my chair, blanket, and food, set them up, and start the wait. The time is around 5:45 PM. 14 hours until I'll have my Wii.

My friends call me to tell me that Gamestop has no one in line, and I should go out there. "That's because all of their systems were preordered, you morons". "Oh...". "Yeah. I'm staying at Target. I need you guys to come watch my stuff for a couple of minutes so I can run in and get supplies...". They show up about 30 minutes later.

I leave Target with a new sleeping bag, a cap, 2 cans of Red Bull, some granola bars, and a Lunchable. Here's some important information... I check my bank account before I bought these things... balance: 512 and some change. Total for sleeping bag and more food, and $10 cash for pizza later: $42. Left over in bank account: $470. Keep note of that number for later.

As the night goes on our little line builds its way up to 13 people who ended up crashing over night. We became a pretty close knit group of friends over those hours we spent in the freezing Nebraska night. We all agreed, since the store had 24 units, that we could leave and get back into our place in line whenever we wanted... we were all going to get what we wanted anyway. We knew total counts for games, controllers, everything. The perks of having a Target security guard camping out with you, I suppose.

I'm glad I got the sleeping bag though. It dropped down to 16 degrees, with mild wind. There was frost forming on blankets, tents... even shoes. None of us realized how cold it was getting, of course. We were too busy making bad puns with Wii's name to worry about freezing.

Some amazing lady brought us some hot cocoa, a few people thought we were homeless and dropped change off at us, and we were constantly asked why we were there.

The most interesting people were the diehard Sony fans, notably a Best Buy employee and his friend. Intoxicated, they stole a Target shopping cart, and started to say things such as "You're waiting for your Wiis!!!! Wii!!!!" and asking us why we didn't just wait to get a PS3. The security guards were camping out in a tent they had brought, and were ingoring them until they came up and almost hit the tent with the cart. "So who's in the tent playing with their Wii's!!!" Best Buy Guy asks... "Target security, actually. If you don't get out of the cart, and leave the property, I'll call the police." This seems to sober the two of them up, and they leave in a rush.

After a long night, and a beautiful sunrise, we get our tickets for Wii. I was #5. The store owner then tells us that he only has five controllers, but 8 nunchucks. "What? that's retarded!". It turns out he's a tool, and thought that the classic controllers were the controllers... they actually had closer to 20 remotes.

He leads us inside and back to electronics, single file. He lets groups of ten people through at a time, one at a time, to get their games and extras. I grab Zelda and another Wiimote. I was going to get more... but putting food in my stomach and gas into my car, not to mention paying rent, seemed to be slightly more important. I get to the register, run my card, and all is going well... until they get an error code back from my bank.

"Try it under credit."

"Hm... try debit again."

"It's not working... do you want to see if you can get the money from your ATM?"

I run to the ATM at the front of the store, check my balance... and it's been knocked down to $89. After some quick math in my head, I realize that the money for Wii had been taken out... the exact ammount. Target ****ed up running my card.

Panicing, I go explain the situation to them. They call up their main office to get the transactions canceled, but they say it's going to take up to 48 hours to get the money back into my account. I try to sign up for a Target credit card, but get denied. "I'll tell you what, I'll hold the system for you until Thursday."

This just won't do.

I drive to my moms house to see if she has money I can borrow to pay for it. She doesn't, but mentions that my sister does... After a stressing phone call to her, she agrees to spot me the money for it.

We drive to her ATM to pull the cash out, and the 80 left in mine... but what? After I pull the 80 out, my statement says my remaining balance is in the 300's! The money got put back into my account. I literally collapse in front of the ATM and sigh. I'd been up for around 32 hours at this point, camped outside in the freezing Nebraska nights, and got wrung through hell at the check stand. I pull the $220 that takes me to my $300 spending limit, my sister gives me $60, and my mom had give me $20 to help out.

In Target I go to the service desk, and have my friend get my system. I pay for it, and leave the store, clutching that bag to my chest.

This system is incredible. The new controller IS the new standard, as far as I'm concerned.

I got Mario 64 on the virtual console just to see if the resolution and frame rate are improved on VC N64 games. They are. 60FPS, and hardly a scan line to be seen. When I can get my hands on some component cables, I'm sure it'll really shine. And the game actually plays damn fine with the Gamecube controller. Without thinking I pulled off a long jump across the castle grounds, then remembered I was using the GC pad...

I'll be buying all of my games again on the Virtual Console, I suppose.

EDIT: Oh, and every Wii system and controller is sold out in Lincoln... my guess is the same things are going on elsewhere.

EDIT #2: My Wii number is 0585 6232 3362 1722. Add me or some **** so we can send messages.

I got up at 8:30 am and headed to walmart which opened at 7am. i didn't think there would be a problem getting a wii in my town but there were actually alot of people camping out. walmart's 54 wii's were snagged at 7am, futureshop had a line of about 50 people for 30 wiis, superstore gave out tickets before i got there for 12 wiis, so i decided to head for the lesser known zellers. got there at 9am and there were only four people there. they told me there were only 7 wiis here, and i couldn't believe it since i thought there was no chance given what i saw at the other stores. so i waited outside that store for an hour and finally picked up a wii and zelda.

played wii sports and boxing is really fun. i'm at around skill level 650 and it's so hard to beat them now. it's really fun but also really tiring. i was alternating with a few others so it wasn't bad, but i doubt i could play that by myself for a long time. but i guess your not supposed to anyways.

also played tennis for about 1 minute, golfing for 5 mins and still didn;t touch bowling. i just wanted to get a feel for these and will get more time on them later. baseball i played for about 10 minutes and it gets really boring. especially pitching. it doesn't simulate a real swing very well since the accelerometer goes faster with a flick of the wrist. it's tough to get it out of the infield with a real swing, but you can it it deeper, and pitch faster, with a flick of the wrist. kind of disapointing.

Also, i got a zelda coin from zellers when i bought the game. number 2980/5000. apparently you were supposed to get a gold coin or something. not sure what that was all about. looks pretty nice though. it has a drawing of link aiming at you with his bow.

I plan on getting Marvel ultimate alliance and an extra controller and nunchuk around christmas. has anybody picked up this game yet? how was it? Also, i don't think you can save GC games without a GC memory card. has anybody found a way to save GC games onto the wii's memory? And do the VC games work with a GC controller? in the manual it says that they don't but i've heard otherwise on the net.

Anybody who complains about the gap between the DS screens needs a slap in the back of the head. You can't make a folding LCD screen. Bah, whatever.I have no problem with the gap between the dual screens. You'd be an idiot to complain about that. I have a problem with the gap they make in Yoshi Island DS. The screens should act as one, so that you cannot jump in a space between them so that you aren't on either of the two screens. The second you jump up from the bottom screen, you should appear on the top screen and the second you drop off the top screen you should appear on the bottom screen. It is a problem with Yoshi's Island, not the DS. Once you've played the game long enough, you will see exactly what I and everyone else is complaining about.

I've played the game long enough to know that if the game ignored the gap between the screens, the egg aiming would be shot to hell. It's just a game quirk.

Bah, who cares.

My number is 5601 5260 2319 2426

here are my first two impression posts I made on Toonzone forums, since then my opinion has only gotten better on WiiSports (which wasn't bad to begin with):

My Walmart had over the limit by 6:30 pm, so I devided to camp out at target, got there at 12:30 and I was fourth in line, by the tme it was 3:45 there were more people than wii's at the store, luckily i was able to get one, it was mighty cold and i've been up all night, and as excited as I am the wii is going to have wait, at least its here and i can play it later, this thing is not going to be kept in the shelves this whole season!

it was COLD it was 22 degrees!

-----

Here is my mini-review,

The system looks fragile though it might be because I just bought it and want to take care of it Though it is not as 'sexy' in real life, it still looks good, I felt bad putting my fingers all over it and smearing it even if i had washed them ;(
That strap better work on the Wiimote! I really got into some of the games which I was about to throw the controller I'll definately strap on everytime. The sensing got some getting used to but within minutes I was already making huge leaps on controlling it! It feels great, the speaker does add to the game however the quality is pretty bad which kind of sucks, the rumble feels great.
The Menus were fun to navigate. It found my WiFi easily like a computer, however downloading the updates and what not took a LONG time, hope that is not too often or that it does it when the system is asleep in wiiconnect24..
While I don't hear the fan, there was definately noise coming fromt he Wii, nothing too loud or anything but noticable. Playing Gamecube games is somewhat annoying because of were you put the controllers, (at least with wired ones),
It seems to read discs slower wii sports sometimes feels a while, nothing too bad but similar to other cd/dvd consoles, I guess the gamecube spoiled me with fast load times that resembled cartridges.

Wii Sports:

fun as a mini game, its ture I never liked sports but this games get boring after one game, though I can see my self playing them every other day for quick fun. As a pack in its fine as a full game no, im not sure i'll get wii play now,
Tennis:the funnest game, not dissapointed like I thought that you dont move the character around,
Bowling: meh, not only that, this game is not very realistic, i kept making strikes and hitting pins when in real life I suck at it,
Golf: Never been a fan of golf or liked golf games, its somewhat fun but not too much (though its mostly my dislike of real golf)
Baseball: Kind of hard but fun, hopefully i'll get better,
Boxing: very fun however the controls are not very responsive ;(
minigames modes and train age: entertaining

Again as a full game it lacks, as a pack in game extra its fun. I do not like how Miis don't have arms or legs in a lot of stuff..

Now my review sounds mostly negative, but I was just pointing out small quirks that annoyed me, other than that, this system is worth every penny, it brought me back into gaming and delivered, the wiimote is an awesome new way to play videogames, I can't wait to play a full game that inmerses you with these controls, mini games are fun for a while but a full game would be the greatest thing (which i think Zelda will be ),
this is trully New-Gen, and it'll be hard playing games in a different way from now on.

Edit: btw the person asking, weather won't be available until Dec. 20, News until early January, and browser no one knows, hopefully sometime soon (i'm assuming early next year and yes free for download the first 6 months).

Sooo...essentially everything to do with Wii is sold out in my area. From games to accessories. I haven't seen a Zelda anywhere, and my quest for a classic controller and even a Wii points card has been thwarted.

Does anyone think Nintendo has another huge success on their hands? I mean a DS success, not a Gamecube/N64 semi-success.

It being the cheapest of the new Gen game consoles, it has that advantage. Apparently this quietly sold out while rioters were shooting each other over PS3's.

Kick ass, sounds like the Wii, and Nintendo, are getting some much needed props.

I won't be getting a Wii until two games are out, Smash Brothers and RE. I don't need one until then the way I look at it. Plus there's a chance of a price drop by the time they come out.

If you think about it, like, conceptually, it really is sort of the big/little brother to the DS. Sorta the next step in that same direction. So if it mirrored the sucess of the DS, it'd make sense in my mind if only for that reason alone.

I could certainly handle a $200 price tag sans Wii Sports. As long as like one of my friends owned it, it wouldn't be a huge loss. It's not the kind of game you're gonna sit down and play by yourself for hours on end.

I just got back from doing the rounds. I got Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz and Excitetruck. The Wii displays in every store are destroyed. Toys R Us had a couple copies of Zelda, but that's because they lost the box yesterday and just found it this afternoon. The classic controller is completely impossible to find, which makes me wish I had bought one on Sunday morning. Apparently the nunchaku is sold out everywhere too, under-produced it seems.

Who's ever heard of a console launch where controllers and assorted accessories are as impossible to find as the console?

Edit: So it seems like the Wii has sold 680,000+ on it's first day. Not half bad, Nintendo. It sure puts a beat down on the 260,000+ the PS3 has out there. They're raking in the cash, especially considering everyone seems to be picking up 2 or even 3 games at a time, and they actually make money on every Wii sold.

I kinda feel bad for Sony. Not only are they losing hundreds on each PS3 sold, but their hope in making something back through software sales is all but dead. Actually...I don't feel sorry for them at all.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to play TP yet because I had work right after I got my Wii and then I went right to sleep to wake up for more work. Right now my Wii finally passed the connection test and is updating for it as I type this message. Can't wait to try TP.

Maddox hasn't really posted one of his rants in a long time because he's been workin' on a book or something, but he finally updated with one aimed at our beloved Sony. I can't directly link it here cause the URL has a naughty word in it and therefore will not link correctly. I will, however, post a link to the main page with instructions to scroll down a bit and click the Sony rant that was just recently posted. There is some pretty foul language ther and some animated depictions of poop, so if you wanna avoid those things then stay away. Otherwise, go here (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net).

I read that last week. I tell you sony shoudl stop rushing and focus on making more units than this.

Nintendo will be making money off every console they sell so it's easy. i heard many people have been having problems with their wii like it won't turn on or if u update, the system breaks down. Werid stuff but the great thing is Nintendo is giving free consoles to the ones that have a broken console.

I will be getting the wii next year after christmas and when enough people have 1 so it won't be sold out.

I'm pretty sure we've been over that at least a dozen times.

i heard many people have been having problems with their wii like it won't turn on or if u update, the system breaks down.

I wouldn't say many people. I've only heard three seperate accounts of this happening. It all has to do with firmware upgrades. 360's were getting bricked a month ago, PS3's have been bricked from their updates, and now the Wii has a couple. It's nowhere near as bad as the 360 or PS3 ones though. It's first gen hardware, there's always going to be a couple bugs.

In some other news, the first two TurboGrafx games have been released on the Wii Shop channel. Bonk's Adventure and Bomberman 93'. I want Bonk's Adventure soooooo bad, but I refuse to play the VC games without a classic controller.

Also, how do you get back to the main Wii menu while playing a GC game? Whenever I hit the Home button nothing happens. It just flashes at the bottom of the remote (all four boxes as if the remote is not synced with the Wii). GameCube games aren't running on emulators like the Xbox 360 has it set up. GameCube games are running on hardware mode, with the Wii's chipset turned down to GameCube speeds, so I assume since it's in GameCube mode, it shuts down all Wii-related stuff since GameCube can't use any of that anyway.

I give Intelligent Systems all the respect in the world, if for nothing more than Fire Emblem. That's all I've really played from them but I love what I've played.

Ehhh, I think you've played more games from them than you probably realize. They are R&D1, the oldest team at Nintendo. The team that taught Miyamoto how to do anything, and the team that got Nintendo into the buisness in the first place. Lemme' see if I can do this from memory.....

Intelligent Systems brought you....Sheriff, Radarscope, half of Mario Bros, Balloon Fight, Ice Climbers, Chu Chu Land, Urban Champion, Excitebike, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Gumshoe, Wild Gunman, Rob the Robot, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Land & II, Tetris (NES), Tetris, (Game Boy), Dr. Mario, Tetris & Dr. Mario, NES Golf, Zelda: Link's Awakening, Kid Icarus II, Balloon Kid, Metroid II, Alleyway, Baseball, Battle Clash, Metal Combat, Mario Paint, Super Fu*king Metroid, Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon/Puzzle League, any and all Fire Emblem games, Famicom Wars, Super Famicom Wars, Advance Wars and all the rest, Wario Land (& II, III, and IV), Sound Fantasy, Paper Mario, Pokemon Pinball, Super Game Boy, Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Virtual Boy, Battle Card Hero, Wario Land VB, Mario Clash, Mario Tennis VB, Galactic Pinball, Telero-Boxer, Mario Kart Super Circut, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, Wario Ware, Wario Ware Twisted, Wario Ware Touched, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, and the upcomming Wario: Master of Disguise. They are also responsible for the whole Starfi series, which the US never got, and is very close net to the Wario series. Wario himself was created to be the exact opposite of Mario and be his enemy. They did it as a way to show their contempt for being ignored by Nintendo's management just because R&D4 (Miyamoto/Tezuka) created bigger games than them, when they put out twice as much work, even if it netted them few bankable franchises. Their games are legendary, and they never got much recognition, or promotion.

See? They've never really made any of the "Big Guns" as it is, but without them, Nintendo's past would be bland as hell. Besides, if Super Metroid isn't a SMB3 caliber warhead, I don't know what is. They are the foundation on which Miyamoto built his EAD empire that Intelligent Systems is now a division of, and people seem to walk over them as though they only make "filler games". It just saddens me that it took them 25 years to finally get to share the kind of budgets EAD gets to give us full console games like Fire Emblem on GC, Wario Ware Smooth Moves for Wii. Hell, they only started putting their name on the boot-up screen of their games 3/4 years ago as a desperate attempt to gain attention for the work.

That's why I get so annoyed that people don't ever give them credit. It's more Nintendo's fault than anyone else. Hell, NST gets more attention, and all they made were Kobe Brynt, Metroid Hunters, and Mario vs DK & 2 & 3.

I never played any of them up until Prime. I was the same way with Zelda too, never got into either of them till they went 3D, and now I love them both dearly (need I remind everyone that OoT is my #1 game of all time? I think Prime ranks somewhere in the top ten). But yeah, if you never gave Prime a chance, you owe it to yourself.

Personally, I've never played any of the Metroid games so I don't have an opinion about them, but there are plenty of games on TMB's list that show that Intelligent Systems deserves more credit than they get (in my opinion, Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon alone proves that :D).

Bleh, that Wikipedia entry is incomplete. Intelligent Systems' back catalog is highly debatable because they and R&D1 pretty much worked as a team on every project between them, and after Nintendo shut down R&D1 in 2003, almost all of the people moved to Intelligent Systems, and as a result, nothing really changed. I treat them as a unit.

Here's a cool little video I found about the history of LoZ. It's about 50 minutes long, and it goes over all the games and the stuff that happened in them, then tries to set up a timeline for the games. Obviously we know most, if not all of this stuff, but it's a really great watch, especially if you're a fan of Zelda.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3217799422494896410

They have some really neat ideas in there, but I still don't totally agree with the timeline. I like their theory of the split timeline thing, though. I wish Nintendo would just come out and release one, or at least tell us which games can be considered absolute Zelda canon. I'd actually prefer if stuff like the OoA/OoS games, and Four Swords was taken out of the mix.

Attention!

I just saw on the G4 channel that there is an update for the Wii, I guess it can be downloaded, and that it is "breaking" Wii systems.

Peanut
11-27-2006, 10:41 AM
That update came out on launch day, and it's broken very few systems. I love when these things happen, and suddenly people think it's an epidemic. Like the exploding Xbox powercords, or the DS Lite's with faulty hinges.

Toonami Tom
11-27-2006, 10:48 AM
Oh....

Just wanted to warn you, just in case.:)

Peanut
11-27-2006, 10:56 AM
Oh, no. I wasn't getting on your case, man. I was just saying it's weird how whenever something like this happens, the general gaming public thinks it's a huge deal and it's happening to everyone. Funny how that works.

Anyways, any other Wii gamers starting to get some sore muscles? After a straight week of playing Zelda, Wii Sports, Excite Truck, Monkey Ball and Rayman, I've got some pretty sore spots on my shoulders and arms. Could it be that me, as a one of the many devote gamers, has a life devoid of exercise? Couldn't be. I do know one thing, I'm going to have rippiling shoulder and bicep muscles in a couple months.

And has anyone been reading up on all these idiotic Wiimote injuries? I'd really love to know what in the hell these people are doing. You've got idiots with broken TV's, broken windows, smashed Wiimotes, black eyes, the works. I also find it funny how they then go on to say, "Oh, the Wiimote wrist strap is too weak!" then why the f*ck are you literally pitching in Wii sports like you're holding a God damn ball!? Anyone see the video of some tools at some gaming site who had their wrist strap break off during a game of Wii Tennis? The moron absolutely hurled the thing, with sweaty hands, at the wall, just missing their TV. Anyone had any problems yet? I would hope no one here is this idiotic.

Toonami Tom

I am also devoid of exercise, heh heh. The wii could actually be good (or bad?) for me.:D

Duke
11-27-2006, 11:49 AM
I was over at a friends last night playing and he was like be careful there are reports of wii wrist straps breaking. I told him that I thought I'd be okay because I had zero intention of actually throwing the wiimote. It just cracks me up when people actuallly allow a wiimote to get thrown out of their hands.

Also, I got my 360 on launch day and have yet to have a single problem with it. It cracks me up how everyone assumed all the consoles (or powercords) were bad.

Peanut
11-27-2006, 11:54 AM
I was more talking about the original XBox powercord that had a grand total of 2 mishaps, which lead to the most overblown epidemic I've ever seen. It also some how carried over the 360, even though there wasn't a single problem with the 360's power cord or power brick.

Anyways, I've searched high and low for this video, and it's been under my nose the entire time. Greatest concert ever.

I have to really hurl the remote to get a decent pitch out, I dunno. I think it's probably more about how QUICKLY you move the remote and not how much. I'll have to experimennt with it more when I get it. But I have a tight enough grip and the strap seems strudy enough that I wouldn't have any such problems when really getting into it like that. Golf has been really hard for me, and I think it's because my momevements are just way too exaggerated and not delicate enough.

Peanut
11-27-2006, 03:43 PM
You just mentioned the two worst and most broken parts of Wii Sports.

The secret to pitching in baseball is to just hold the directional buttons. It's probably the least skill involved part of all the games. It won't matter how hard you swing the Wiimote, you'll always get the same speed and the different throws will strike people out non-stop. The splitter is quite easily the killer pitch in the game. It's not possible to do anything but foul it or knock it slightly towards the pitcher for an easy out. It's a ball if you don't swing, but the pitch starts out looking like a normal pitch, so the odds of you actually thinking, "don't swing" before the ball gets to the plate is slim to none.

As for Golf, it's just completely broken. It doesn't matter how soft or hard you swing, your shot meter will almost always go over the top. It's easily the worst of the Wii Sports games, even beating out Boxing, which should just be called speed punching or something, because blocking and weaving do nothing in the game. If you actually attempt to play it like a real boxing game, you'll lose to the nut job flailing their limbs around.

Either way, that concert is awesome; especially the SMB3 ending arrangement, and Yoshi's Island.
The Yoshi's Island stuff blows my MIND!

Duke
11-27-2006, 04:39 PM
Yeah, I played boxing the other day and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I kept trying to duck & block and my health meter (circle) dropped like a rock.

Peanut
11-27-2006, 04:53 PM
Because ducking and blocking doesn't work! Punches always reach you no matter how far away you lean, and they always break your block, no matter where your hands are for blocking.

Edit: So this is crazy. We all know the Wii has sold 600,000+ consoles in the week it's been available on the market, but how about this statistic? The Legend of Zelda has sold 454,000+ copies along with it. That's more than 75% of the consoles going with a copy of Zelda. Compared to the fact that the PS3 didn't even have that kind of attach % for every single game on the console combined...WOW!

I just watched that Zelda video Peanut posted. DAMN. I never thought about the split timeline theory, but it does make perfect sense, and that Aonuma quote almost seems to seal the deal. Makes you wonder...

Duke
11-28-2006, 06:45 AM
That history of Zelda video Peanut posted was great. I really enjoyed it. I really do believe in the split timeline theory even before watching this video. Mainly because I had previously heard that quote by Aonuma. In response to Peanut's comment about taking 4 Swords out of official canon, I have to say I disagree if you are talking about the Gamecube's 4 Swords Adventure. Because it fits in so well with the Minish Cap, which in really does have to be the first zelda game. I feel like if you believe Minish Cap is canon then you almost have to accept 4 Swords Adventure. Which is actually a pretty fun game for anyone who hasn't played it. It took me forever to actually get around to playing the game but I played and beat it this summer and would recommend it. Now, if peanut was talking about LoZ:LttP/4 Swords for GBA then I really cannot comment as I've never actually had the chance to get four friends together and play the game.

Also, I think I've just figured out exacting how Oracle of Ages & Oracle of Seasons fit. At first I thought it would be impossible for OoA/OoS to take place at the exact same time in the split timeline because windwaker is set like a 100 years in the future, but it works perfect if you place Oracle of Ages in the WW timeline because they would happen exactly at the same time when link traveled back 100 years. And I'd probably place them both at the ends of their respective timelines just because Link seems older in both.

Peanut
11-28-2006, 10:41 AM
Not FSA, that one fits, but I hated FS on the GBA.

One of the problems I see with the timeline is where they place Link's Awakening. In the manual it says it takes place right after LttP, so that doesn't fit in at all. Also, the part where they say the legend of the Hero of Time got passed down from the split by the child Link because he told the King the story. That's a pretty big stretch.

11-28-2006, 10:46 AM
I beat FS with my friend in one class period back in high school. It was too easy and short. FSA was much better and much more fun.

I was a noob when I had an SNES, all I cared about was licensed games (have you every played the "Wayne's World" video game? Because I have). I will say thst after watching the history of Zelda thingy I'm really a lot more interested in playing just about all of them again or for the first time. And since LttP is to most people what OoT is to me, I guess that's a good place to start.

Interestingly enough, since I wasn't really into Zelda back in the day, I wasn't terribly interested in OoT (my first Zelda game) when it came out. However, my mom just sort of randomly bought it for me for christmas that year, and for that I'm eternally thankful, since I haven't really looked back and it is (for the millionth time) my #1 favorite game. This still left me almost entirely unexposed to any 2D titles except for Link's Awakening, so I still have a lot of catching up to do after I get through TP.

Remember when I said my Wireless was acting up and the Wii wouldn't connect to the wireless router after I downloaded a couple of VC games? Well, guess what. The Wii is fine. The router died. I've got my 360 and PC hooked up through Windows Connect on an Ethernet Cable. Since Nintendo didn't start selling the Ethernet USB adapter here, I'm screwed for now. That leaves me with two options. (1) Spend $50 on a replacement router for my Wii and DS online needs, or (2) Save the $50 for Christmas gifts for my family I need to buy and just Christmas-bag the router.

I take option 2. Hence you won't be seeing my Mii for three weeks or so. No biggie.
