In Metroid Prime 3, I can't get used to how weird it is to have Samus's eyes follow around my remote movements on the scan visor. Clearly they are playing with the console horsepower this time around for fun. Also, the controls really are all they are cracked up to be. I wouldn't put them above traditional input in terms of precision, but for the sake of immersion, I can't live without them.
Having all the characters talk is awesome too. The voice acting is stellar, and the other friendly bounty hunters had me laughing the whole first section. Retro really outdid themselves. The game is different enough to feel fresh, but doesn't mess with the formula much. Its still Metroid--you just get the chance to finally look in on the world.
Samus also briefly ditches the power suit early in the game through a cinema scene. That makes me happy.

Because Nintendo is stuck in the past. Samus is supposed to be you, despite the fact that 99% of the people who play Metroid are probably dudes.
Sadly, 97% of those people probably wish they were female, anyways.

Samus doesn't need to talk in the Prime series, though sometimes I wish she would so that the character gets a more established image. The more that Samus comes out as a character, the less chance of Nintendo trying to pull a Tomb Raider and authorize a horrible-ass movie that ruins the whole damn series. Its almost happened twice now. Everytime Nintendo feels they are finished with a franchise, they authorize an anime or something to milk it, and then Nintendo adapts the franchise to follow the messed up ideas of some anime production company, and the franchise falls in the mud. It happened to F-Zero, and it happened to Kirby. Kirby is getting redemption through Samsh, but I don't see F-Zero ever making it back from the void. Its too much of a niche market.
So yeah, I'm glad Samus has evolved as a characters some, but I wish they would push it further.

Yeah, I don't get that either. People act as if Samus is like Mario or Link and can't ever speak, but seem to forget that she spoke all throughout Fusion. I don't care either way though.

Holy sh*t, has anyone ever seen this (http://my.break.com/media/view.aspx?ContentID=359313)? Someone needs to try it, it is absolutely amazing.
I don't remember that stage at all.
If you read the comments, it says it's in the Japanese version only. Sometimes I wish I had a Super Famicom. Just to be gay. I do love them small-eyed mother f*ckers.

Its a hack and you know it :P, and its not the only one (http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/678647/Nugget_from_the_Net.html). I tried to make something similar to that years ago with the SMB3 engine, but got bored and quit. Still, its an impressive hack.

It's confirmed my friend. Links Crossbow Training. Sounds completely awful and Nintendo continues it's slide into the zone of pure sh*t. After Galaxy and Smash Bros, I don't even know what kind of bullsh*t we'll have to suffer through for an actual game to be released. Thankfully I've got some real gaming machines to get me through.

So, Nikkei.co.jp has released worldwide hardware sales figures based on NPD, Enterbrain and GfK numbers. According to them Wii has now taken over the lead from Microsoft's 360. This has to be taken with a grain of salt, of course but I think we all know if it hasn't happened yet, it will happen by the end of the year. This is hardly good news for core gamers. :ohwell:
Mecha Cow

The problem is simply that if Nintendo can sell more consoles than Microsoft in half the time, more and more developers will jump on the casual bandwagon. At least that's what I fear.
GK Punk
09-12-2007, 11:12 AM
It's a logical train of thought. I think as long as there is at least one other system that's not aimed at casual fans mostly, that is doing well enough to turn profit I don't think anyone will necessarily stop production on traditional style games.
It's just kind of a shame to me that it's Nintendo doing this.
Peanut
09-12-2007, 11:36 AM
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this was confirmed a month or so ago. The thing is, this is pretty much all Japan's fault. While it's selling in insane amounts of NA and Europe, it still isn't selling like it is in Japan. The North American market will always be more about the core games, so I'm not worried about getting the games I want.
ThirdMarioBro
09-12-2007, 01:23 PM
Yeah, but we know all the most creative games came from Japan back when they gave a sh*t. If you can fault North American developers for anything, its that we're very generic. Its getting better, but not fast enough.

That's such bullsh*t and you know it. Name a Japanese game that's done anything except be by the books this generation? You can't name a single f*cking one. The games that have continued to push the envelope in the Next-Gen have been from North American developers. In fact, aside from Galaxy and Smash Bros, both of which will undoubtedly break very little new ground and have very little in terms of innovation, every other huge game coming this year is North American developed.

Graphically - Crysis
Presentation and Story - BioShock
Sheer Size and Depth - Oblivion
Physics - Half-Life 2/Crysis
Enemy AI - F.E.A.R.
Character Interaction - Mass Effect
Online - Halo 3
All of these games have/will push the envelope in terms of how games are viewed. The bar was/will be raised by each of these, and where did they all come from? North America. Although I think Crytek may be from the EU? I'm not sure one that one.
If you're going to talk actual innovation, you're going to get absolutely nothing, because games have pretty much reached the same point as movies, where true innovations happen very very rarely.
But when you take a look at what has come out of Japan recently, you've got giants like Capcom pretty much turning into a Western game developer themselves, Square doing nothing but making countless RPG's, and even Konami is turning MGS into more of a shooter, it even has a f*cking first-person view-point you can play from! The only ones doing anything remotely different are Nintendo, and they're not bettering gaming, they're just expanding the audience with bullsh*t titles that innovate on nothing.

Now, to all you Europeans out there. You're apparently supposed to have gotten a little surprise for your Wii Shop channel today. Supposedly, other than the crappy Zelda knock-off Neutopia II, you also got Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (Japan only) and Mario Picross (Japan Only). The catch is that they will only be available until the end of September.
First of all, yay for Japan only releases. So they do care. Second of all, WHAT THE FU*K? Why jerk them down after two weeks? Its not like the content provider is going to yank the game or something. Its Nintendo's own damn software. That makes little sense. Anyway, back to the happy crap.

ThirdMarioBro

Sin & Punishment is a kick-ass shooter in the vein of Star Fox 64 from Treasure that we didn't get because Nintendo was quickly trying to bury the Nintendo 64 and "reverse their console fortunes" with the GameCube.
Yeah, they should have released Sin & Punishment.
It bothers me that those games aren't translated in English in those screenshots. If they release them raw and in Japanese, I'll be annoyed, but I'll still download them. Either way, we had better get them Monday.

So, hilarious turn of events here.
Nintendo shut down their Nsider message boards "indefinitely" today. Apparently because they're overhauling the site to update it because of the success of the Wii and DS? It even tells their fans, supposedly the "greatest fans in the world" to make their own Nintendo forums to continue talking on, because they don't know if the forums will return. ROFL, Nintendo. ROFL!
This is pretty clear. They don't want anything to do with the hardcore who frequent those forums anymore. Even if they were updating the site, what in the hell does that have to do with the forums? This is a really big asshole move, and despite what Iwata says, they're getting that arrogance back that they had years ago.
Nintendo are f*cking bastards. How anyone can still be blindly loyal to their bullsh*t is beyond me.

Well, if that doesn't prove that Nintendo has officially shown us the door, nothing will.
Why the hell have I even bothered putting in those stupid "My Nintendo" codes that come with games? I haven't gotten any free goodies in two years. Fu*k 'em. Well, when one of the other two manage to rip off the Wii's success in a few years and the public drops them like the fad they are, see if this fans are there to pick them up out of the gutter again....because we won't be this time.
Seriously, past Mario Kart, I guarantee you we aren't getting sh*t as far as "gamer games" go next year. I've been saying it since Spring, and people tell me I'm overreacting, but dammit look at the evidence. Next year is the year of Wii Sports 2, Wii Music, and Wii Play 2. Hell, there might be a Mario Party thrown in just to add salt to the wound. Now they shut down Nsider forums, and are rumored to be shutting down Nintendo Power.
We've been shown the door people. If you get any more games next year, it will be farmed out half-ass sequels like Yoshi's Island DS, F-Zero Climax, and Wario Master of Disguise, and who wants that sh*t?

It's not about the message board in the least. It's about the message sent upon it's closure. You can't just look at the lack of real games on the Wii and say, "Well there you go! Nintendo hates us." because there weren't any less games for the Gamecube at this point either.
There are few real games, few announcements about new CORE games, existing franchises being give the casual treatment, and now this sudden decision to cut off what is the home of some of their most hardcore fans? The other things can be explained in different ways, the fact that they're severing the cords from their core group of followers can't be explained as anything but that. They're saying "Thanks for keeping us alive for all those years, but f*ck you guys! You never brought in the cash like these clowns do! L8tr!"

In all likelihood, we'll be running down the average douche for playing EA's NFL 2012, because John Madden will probably be dead by then.
I sold Yoshi's Island DS. I sold those sh*tty GBA F-Zero games, and I never laid a finger on that farmed out Wario abomination or those other two third party Kirby games in the first place. Fool me once and all that. If a game has had all the joy, imagination, and wonder sucked out of it for the sake of making a soulless sequel, I don't buy it pure and simple.
Hell, its that spirit of joy and wonder that always made Nintendo games so magical. Without that, their games aren't any better than the little kiddy crap on GBA.

Buying Nintendo games (Wario Land 4), and buying third party facsimiles of Nintendo games (Wario: Master of Disguise) is like the difference between buying The Lion King, and buying The Lion King 1 1/2.
Of course they don't owe me jack sh*t, but it still really sucks to see that 'your' company doesn't care about you nearly as much as you cared for it.
O' contraire, they do owe you their existence. If not for you, the GameCube would have died and they would have gone Sega long before the Wii. Loyalty doesn't mean jack in the business world, but that doen't change the fact that you and everyone like you have been betrayed.

I don't know, though Advance Wars DS 2 is on the way. What I do know is that the DS has been delivering on a consistent basis, and it's quickly becoming my favorite gaming platform. Second to Toyota, Nintendo is now the second largest company in Japan. (http://www.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUKT1482820070925)
Its hard to believe they are in this position of being 2nd place in the Japanese business world with $36 billion in the bank when only three years ago magazines were reporting rumors of Nintendo getting ready to "pull a Sega".
Just chalk it up to the random and unpredictable nature of the video game market.

I chalk it up to Japans love of stupid game console gimmicks. All the Wii games are stupid ports of DS games, ports of games from other systems with broken motion controls, first party games that could run on Gamecube, and one minute games like Wii Boogy.

I've actually got a bet going with a friend that Smash Bros. Brawl won't make it to 1 million units in Japan. They didn't buy it on GameCube, so why now? Those people aren't the ones who even bought the Wii. Real "gamers" have nearly gone extinct in that country.

Barkworm
09-30-2007, 02:21 PM
Sure but whenever IGN talks about problems in one of their favourite franchises it gets interesting and they talked about the game being too easy and more "casualized" in comparison to earlier Zelda games. I've also read about the same problems in other (German) reviews. One thing I'm a bit disappointed about is the fact that they got rid of the heart pieces because looking for those was always one of my favourite parts in the games.
Peanut
09-30-2007, 02:30 PM
I don't see it being easy as much of a problem. Every single Zelda game aside from Adventures of Link has been a cake walk.

09-30-2007, 02:31 PM
They got rid of the heart pieces?!? That's a core fundamental of the series and one of the most entertaining parts. Suddenly my desire to buy the game has decreased 40%. I don't want a baby-fied Zelda game suited to a brain dead casual level of play. Makes sense for Nintendo to pander though. New SMB was so easy it was a joke. If Zelda has gone casual, there really is no low they won't sink to.
That makes me honestly worried about the Wii Zelda (TP doesn't count).

This year we've seen crap fly onto the Wii from every direction. Even Nintendo's own offerings were weak and pathetic compared to the standard we knew and demanded when we were younger. We took it for granted, and it slowly faded. We're about to see the collapse of Nintendo Power with 90% of the longstanding staff having been laid off as the magazine transfers to Future US, a publisher the exact opposite of Nintendo Power's personality. We've seen Miyamoto playing with his puppies, old ladies training their brain, and grandpas using Wii Bowling for their retirement parties.
Mario Galaxy has been that oddball mystery for some time, but seriously...that video brought me tears of joy. Congratulations Smash Bros. You're back in second place, and that's a hard thing to do at this point in time. That's the Mario magic I grew up with. I was beginning to wonder if it was gone forever. Freaking Doom Ship, music intact, tribute to Super Mario 64's castle, actual drama in a Disney-like fantasy Mushroom Kingdom not seen since the 90's, and actually restoring Bowser's dignity as a villain all in a little over a minute. He even turned the Mushroom people to stone, something not seen, heard, or mentioned since 1989 and the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.
Seriously, that game makes it all better. It could even dethrone the kings and be the best in the series. Still too early to call, but the fact that its already a contender speaks volumes.

Rockstar is run by complete douche bags. Honestly. Parody is parody. If you can't deal with a little fun making, then get the hell over yourself or get the hell out of the industry.
I actually heard the reason they complained was because EA used "their" logo font to make the parody. That's quite hilarious because its not even Rockstar's font. They stole it. From who you ask?

I hope this doesn't get much press, otherwise we'll have a problem. We all know EA are pussies, but even they shouldn't have caved. Parody is a constitutional right. I played this game on the PS2, so I don't really care. It's funny, though, how fanboys bitch about crappy PS2 ports but when it's Okami, they forget all about that. Why couldn't they just leave well enough alone?
Peanut
10-18-2007, 03:48 PM
Because Okami is amazing, and sold incredibly poorly for no reason at all? Leaving one of the greatest games of last-gen "well enough alone" is ridiculous. That was the whole problem with Okami; it was left alone! Hopefully this version does well enough that it warrants a sequel. And I think there's a huge difference between a crappy port and one that makes complete and perfect sense, like Okami does.
I still dream of an HD version on the 360, though. With achievements. *prays*
Barkworm
10-18-2007, 03:51 PM
The ONLY thing that was bad about Okami was the boss recycling (which was ridiculous). Apart from that it was so incredible, it needs to get a sequel.
Okami was definitely among one of the most unknown games of last-gen. It is definitely a game that needs more audience. The Wii version should definitely do that, what with all the attention it's been getting lately among the general masses. I'd love a sequel, too.
I'd just rather get a sequel instead of the same game again.
Peanut
10-18-2007, 03:57 PM
But a sequel can't happen because Okami sold INCREDIBLY poorly. And not even like...kinda bad. Last time I check; it didn't even break 200,000 WORLDWIDE! It even bombed in f*cking Japan, did something like 80,000 in it's life-time. In order for there to be an Okami sequel, it needs to be released on other consoles and sell well.
The ONLY thing that was bad about Okami was the boss recycling (which was ridiculous). Apart from that it was so incredible, it needs to get a sequel.
You mean at the end of the game? I thought that was a pretty artificial way to pad out the ending...but Zelda does it and gets away with it.

Not only at the end. Don't you have to beat Orochi for like four times in the game?
Three, the last time I counted. Once at the start, once when you go through the time portal, and once more when you are on the Arc. Or six if you take up the option to play the game again...like me... *coughs*
The only thing I'm worried about if everything goes well on the Wii. Let's just say, for argument's sake, that Okami does so well and sells a rediculous number of games on the Wii and a sequel goes into production. Will they just release it on the Wii, the PS3, or go multi to include the 360? PS2 copies have been pretty poor in sales, as Peanut has pointed out. Going by sales standards, wouldn't it be logical to just release the sequel on the Wii alone if it is a massive success? (God, I hope I'm making sense...)

I don't really know if I get what you're saying here. If you're implying that a sequel of Okami would be a Wii-exclusive, especially following the disaster of making it a PS2 exclusive previously, I don't think Capcom would make the same mistake twice.
As far as I see it now, an Okami sequel would go everywhere. I won't be at all surprised if they announce a 360 port of Okami soon after this, Rockstar did the exact same thing with Bully, which had some decent sale numbers on launch in North America, (just like Okami) but didn't garner the attention it deserved, and now Bully is headed to both 360 and Wii. And lets not forget how buddy buddy Microsoft is with Capcom these days.

YEAH! You have no time. Between all your social engagements and your super hard job, your schedule is totally full, right? And so few games pull the whole "beat it on Easy, Medium, Hard" for achievements anymore. Try looking at Orange Box. You're a casual gamer, and your new hate for 360 is tiring. The only reason you don't like achievements is because you can't lie about what games you've played and whether or not you've beaten them anymore. Seriously, it would be better on the PS3....why? Is there any particular reason besides the fact that your Xbox broke and you're too poor to afford sending it away or getting a new one, because you have no job and waste all your money your mommy gives you on lame Nintendo plushies and The Price is Right memorabilia?
And Doom, I think it would be something you'd like if you got into it. Just ask Ai, he was exactly the same, until he actually got to play a 360 for awhile and watch those achievements pop up and the points roll in. It's addicting, just like trying to get a high score on an arcade game.

I dislike it because I've become bored with shooter after shooter after shooter with a couple of third-person assassin and racing sims in-between. Halo? shooter. Bioshock? Shooter. Army of two? Shooter. Orange box? Shooter. I'm burned out, and I wouldn't be playing the thing if it worked anyway. Hell, the only reason I was bummed for missing Halo's launch was that I wanted to play with you guys.
I'm only without one now because I had the intention of nailing a PS3 this year. If I throw those funds at a replacement Xbox 360, I loose the PS3 until my funds recuperate (at least four-six months on my budget), and I have no interest in Microsoft's fall lineup whatsoever. I'll replace the Xbox eventually, but it will be whenever the fu*k I feel like it--not to keep up with the social standard of those who spend their every waking free moment attached to a bloody controller.
That's it, I'm ****ing out of here.

Well I know the games I own may not be games you like but I only have 2 "shooters" for my 360 and I have alot of games
Dead Rising
Lost Planet*Well I guess this could be considered a shooter*
TMNT*I know you guys think it's bad*
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Fight Night 3
Saint's Row
Crackdown
SKATE
Hitman: Blood Money
Spider-man 3*Ugh worst buy ever*
Stranglehold*Yeah it's a shooter but I assume your beef is with First person shooters*
Gears Of War
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
And my two "shooters"
Perfect Dark Zero
Ghost Recon
And I used to have
Just Cause
The Outfit
They were terrible but they also weren't shooters. So that's 17 games I just listed and only 2 are shooters, or FPS ones anyways. You could play alot of these on the PS3 but I personally like the 360 controller better. I know you guys would hardly consider my collection gold but keep in mind I don't play long games often. I like the short ADD games better for quick fixes.
On a side note I don't own it for 360 but Oblivion is another great game that isn't a shooter though it is FPS but it can be 3rd person, and so can Ghost Recon.
Them achievements be addicting, mang. Is TMB really gone, or will be be back tomorrow?
This is what Capcom had to say about Okami.
A few points here... I get the issues, I really do, but people seem to be missing a few things.
We selected Ready at Dawn to do the port. These guys are all ex-Naughty Dog and ex-Blizzard, and they have already shipped their own titles that have ridiculously high review scores and sales (and have more on the way). Their attention to detail and technical prowess is among the best of any team I've ever worked with.
If we wanted a cheap and dirty port, I could have turned around and picked any one of 50 houses and gotten it done for less and perhaps more quickly. Clearly, that wasn't the approach we sought for a variety of reasons (for the fans, for the reputation of our company, for the potential of the product, etc.).
Lastly, if this were a quick cash in, let's face it, there's TONS of other products that had higher sales on other platforms we could have chosen to port, quickly and cheaply. Okami, as great as it was, wasn't a huge seller on PS2 such that its quick and dirty port would be assured "sales success" on a new platform. We picked a huge game (read: expensive, especially on testing costs), with a ton of moving parts.
So, on the contrary, we have a lot to prove with this game and I know we, and RAD are up to the task. I apologize if I bristle at the accusation that this is a cheap port, but I do.
Given that the only port we've done to date was RE4, which has a 90+ gamerankings score and provided AMAZING value for the platform, has this really been Capcom's modus operendi such that this allegation should be leveled at us? Zack & Wiki is getting better reviews than just about anything you'll see this year on Wii, except possibly Galaxy. Shovelware is not what we do.
As I've said in prior interviews, we're getting the game up and running first. The game is enormous. If after we have everything working correctly, cleanly and as desired so as not to "break" the amazing experience that is Okami, we will worry about potential enhancements. As we are NOT at that point in the process yet, we are loathe to even mention any potential changes or enhancements for fear of disappointing the fans/media.
So for now, if you MUST assume the worst, assume that you will have an amazing 40-60 hour adventure that is one of gaming's most impressive pieces of art to play in fantastic new ways. If you want to hope for the best, well, perhaps we'll have more to say in a few months, but for now we're going to have to ask for your patience.
I kinda do feel better about it. I'll pick it up.

Go to your local Gamestop if you want a chance to play the full version of Super Mario Galaxy. Its not a demo, but the whole thing. Also, if anyone still doubted the fact that the soundtrack is largely orchestrated, here's your proof.

Actually, I think Monday was the 'early start' time (with the game out, like 5 or so in the evening for some stores). And Tuesday was the actual release date.
*Edit: Little off, but was right of the 'early start' stuff. Some places have the game available late on Tuesday, while today would be the main releasing date.

Monday was the release date, but with Nintendo, that also means the ship date, which is usually why Tuesdays are the days stores get Nintendo game shipments. Monday was the official release, but Tuesday was the day most stores got it in.

Q: Why was I not home for the Super Mario Galaxy launch?
A: See Above
Q: So, I guess you're a total douche and now you're out of luck on Mario, right?
A: Wrong bitches! I ordered it from Amazon last month. I picked it up when I pulled into the house and tear into it tomorrow morning [edit: Screw that, I'm doing it now!!!]. :D
Q: Will I change my avatar/sig to something Mario related?

Q: Do I still still suck?
A: Yeah, but I'm a Mario fanboy sucking in all the glory from the greatest game ever made. Fu*k yeah!

Either way, the DS has been sh*t for a long time. You get some decent releases every once in awhile, but it's filled with kiddie games and casual crap 99% of the time. I think the last thing I got was Phantom Hourglass, and even that was a gigantic disappointment.
