Dude, don't buy King of Swing. I played it and it's a disgrace to the DKC games IMO.

It's been a while since I've played it but I'm pretty sure it was nothing remarkable. The concept of playing only with the R + L buttons is fun at first but gets old VERY quickly. I suggest you rent it first, it's really not THAT bad but it's not good either.

Yeah, Barkworm is right. It's not a bad game, but it just wasn't worth the money.

Screen comparison. They're all running Pokemon. That damn GBA Model #1 is an absoulte joke  Even the Micro gets pwned by this new SP. Crazy Nintendo and their silent launch.

The screen isn't too bright, though, is it? I don't want to go blind from the thing in case I end up picking the sucker up.

I don't know why you need it that bright unless yiu're like..legally blind... :P

It's cool and all..but the DS's screen is perfect to me.

The screen isn't too bright, though, is it? I don't want to go blind from the thing in case I end up picking the sucker up.

Nah, it's perfectly fine. It's just a hair brighter than the PSP in real life which isn't near blinding. Though you could use the damn thing as a weak flashlight on the highest setting . The SP itself uses so little battery for processor cycles that with the new battery they put in, the thing has better life than the DS and the old SP. I love this new SP.

09-23-2005, 10:15 PM
hey wait, how did you get it to display on the bottom screen of the DS for a GBA game. Interesting thing the new SP though. Although the only time I have trouble seeing on my SP is when the sunlight is shining on it at full force.

It's in the options when you boot up your DS.

I saw a bunch of the new SP's tonight at the mall, but no Micro's. It's probably a good thing, I may have gone and blown some cash on one.

Now that the Revolution hype is over (and the cold sweat until the games are unveiled begins) I guess now is a good time to look back at this.

Guys, we all consider ourselves Nintendo fans. Heh, we've been pwned x14. This guy has us all flat out beat. Take a look at this...

http://gamecube.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=0&cId=3141783

So much work put into those fake videos. Some people really are that devoted to getting attention, and that guy got the whole damn fanbases attention...twice. I remember that Mario Universe fiasco back in 2002. Man, that was a mess. That guy is amazing to have faked all of that up so quickly.

I'll be damned if that F-Zero video dosen't get me all teary though. I'll miss that. Goddamn that anime to hell.

Because, Peanut, it would sell *far* too well. Sales would skyrocket for their consoles, and they just woulden't be able to keep up with demand. We all know how Nintendo loves to keep stores over stocked with their consoles :).

Japanese sales figures for the week of September 12th through the 18th. For the first time in a long time the DS is not at the top of the charts, and while the PSP came very close to dethroning the DS, it was another of Nintendo's handhelds that did it. Nintendo rules Japan.

* 1: Game Boy Micro - 170,306
* 2: Nintendo DS - 72,167
* 3: Playstation Portable - 70,152
* 4: Playstation 2 - 24,396
* 5: Game Boy Advance SP - 11,147
* 6: Game Cube - 1,882
* 7: Game Boy Advance - 624
* 8: Xbox - 109

Peanut

I'd still like to know what people are buying the PSP for...I mean...what does it offer? I don't see any games worth owning on it.

P.S. TMB, why don't you ever come on and get into our conversations? Damn you! We're talking about how much we rule!

Kid Icarus
09-24-2005, 03:50 PM
And the PSP's sales boost goes to the fact they tossed a White unit out, and launched their Japanese killer ap. Sad sad PSP.

Does anyone else thing it's hilarious that it was beaten out fifteen year old technology?

Ai
09-24-2005, 03:54 PM
I wonder why people buy the PSP, too. In order to get a real use out of it, you have to buy a 1gb card for videos and mp3's, and that's another bunch of cash out of your pocket. It seems too expensive, and that's not even counting the games, which are terrible, anyway. I dunno. I guess people like it for something, and I'm not going to fault them for it.

ThirdMarioBro
09-24-2005, 04:16 PM
PSP - $250
Sony 1Gig Stick - $125.00
One Game - $49.95
Spare Battery - $42.99

Total: $467.94

All that money to watch fu*king videos that Sony won't allow you to encode at full resolution. Ridge Racer is great, but it only goes so far.

If I wasn't a damn collector, I'd sell the fu*king thing, but there's nothing to buy at the moment so whatever. And I repeat, you CAN NOT ply fighting games to any extent on this D-Pad. I put Street Fighter in my SP and kicked the whole game's ass on the highest Turbo setting. I put Darkstalkers in my PSP and can't even throw a damn fireball. It's a crippled mess. Period. Not even good for watching videos (which would be great if not for the resolution limit.) Oh, and fu*k overpriced UMD's also. Too big as an Mp3 player (Game Boy Micro wins that one). No good games (DS wins that one)

I see no use for the thing until it gets good games, and quite frankly, I think the steam is running out. It had the gadget people's attention, but that's fading fast. By the time Mario Kart comes out, it's going to be a bitch slap fest for Sony. By the time PS3, and those Chibi Mega Man games hit, there will be three words in people's minds....

Sega Nomad 2.

I gave the thing a fair chance, but as of yet, it has failed to impress me whatsoever outside of Ridge Racer, which I admit is absoultely stunning, but that's not enough. DS had a drought, but came out of it with flying colors. PSP stagnated.

Satan will need a jacket this winter.

Peanut
09-24-2005, 09:56 PM
He sure did. I probably should have mentioned it. Link also won the Tournament of Champions. The ToC went like this:

Mario vs Cloud
Cloud
vs ---------- Link
Link
Link vs Sephiroth

I'd like to know how an NPC like Sephiroth won the Character Battle, I think last year, anyways. He isn't even cool. Of course, it probably had a lot to do with no other Square characters being in the tournament after Mario clobbered Crono and Link whooped Cloud. That left Sephiroth all alone and the Square fan-boys took it upon themselves to alert every FF community they could to vote for Sephiroth, who still barely won. They did the same thing for Cloud this year.

ThirdMarioBro
09-24-2005, 10:14 PM
Only this year the Nintendo fanbase seems a bt more raring to fight than others, so Mario won. Good to know they kicked all those little Square fanboy's asses this year. Most of those little turds think that FFVII was the first Final Fantasy or refuse to admit that there were more before it. Hell, some I talk to think the Playstation was the first console. Those who are intelligent fanboys (eg. over the age of 14) seem to believe Square is the right hand of God and must go about their daily life in a Cloud costume.

Don't get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy with a passion, but those annoying little fanboy turds annoy the sh*t out of me and I enjoy seeing them get knocked down a notch every so often.

Hey, question for you MP guys...

I love the game. I can beat it on hard with the 'hint's' turned off. blah blah blah. But that's not enough. I'm getting into the whole sequence breaking stuff now.

here's the question: Has anyone been able to do the dash-jump trick to get the space jump at the begining of the game? From what I understand, you scan something out of range, dash, let go of the scanning, then jump. I tried it for 30 minutes tonight, can just coulden't get it to work. any tips? am i even doing it right?

Ai
09-26-2005, 09:24 PM
I've done it plenty of times. Yeah, you scan some brush that's out of range, hold it down, make sure you're at the bottom right part of the ship, do the side dash, then let go of the scanning, and turn yourself to the right. You should land on a platform and you can access the Space Jump Boots. It's pretty easy. You should watch a speed run of someone doing it in order to fully understand how to do it.

Super Princess Peach looks great. I've always been a fan of peach and it's nice to see her getting a game. However, I really think Luigi deserves a real game of his own over peach. Even though, I love Luigi's Mansion (first Gamecube game I owned) Luigi deserves more.

Kid Icarus
09-27-2005, 11:17 PM
Luigi's Mansion gets way too much flack... It was a great game, even if it was short. My friend and I were awed by it for the first few weeks he had his Gamecube (I couldn't afford mine until around when Pikmin came out... first game my system ever played). And what about "Mario's Missing"? :-p

Super Princess Peach is going to rock. It looked like a good concept when I first saw it, and now it seems that they've fleshed it out.

Why would you get Animal Crossing pins when that game's not due out until December?

I swear to god Nintendo had better not **** up the advertising of Mario kart DS's online mode by pushing Animal Crossng instead.

Still though, more advertising can't hurt. I'm glad I don't have to go to a public hotspot to play... I've got my own 11.g network, and the cafeteria I work at at UNL is a big ol' WiFi hotspot :). Mario kart DS on my breaks... yes....

Just a heads up guys, at AMN we're having a Mario Kart DS tournament. We haven't ironed out the details yet, but Nintendo is donating some prize packages and goodies, and I'm trying to help get some kind of ladder going. I probobly won't run it though because I'll be out of town when the game releases which means I'll get fu*king pwned when the tournament takes place.

As of now, it's going to be somewhere around or after Thanksgiving weekend to give people time with the game and get used to the controls and get their groove back (controls are somewhere between SMK & MK64 which is excellent. Feels like the original powerslide, but with the MK64 boost technique and steering is customizable and smooth).

The date may change, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up so they can prepare early  :D

Latest breaking news...Nintendo fu*ks up again.

No online battle Mode for MKDS. That kills a lot of fun for me as there is no one to play with around here and I was really looking forward to that. I don't really look forward to future installments having it because all of their new battle maps have thus far sucked ass and this one had Block Fort. Still, it's a worthless addition to me now. Can't use it with no one to play against. And CPU players suck ass :( That, and future gams that do have the option will undoubtable have sh*tty Double Dash style battle maps that are made easier to make the game more "accessable". So much for my dream of online Block Fort  Guess that'll never happen now.

btw, there's a video of the menu system floating around and it's smooth as silk. But why don't the videos have sound. It's not to hide the game's quality, as that kicks ass. Heard it in person. Meh, whatever. Oh, there will also be an online score ladder so keeping track of world records just got a ton easier and more competitive :)

I hope one of the old SMK Ghost House tracks makes it's way in here.

No online battle Mode for MKDS.
What?! Nooooo! Battle Mode is all I play in multiplayer Mario Kart. I barely ever touch the racing mode. And I only have one friend who owns a DS, so I doubt I'll play the Battle Mode much at all now. This sucks. :(

As for Kojima developing for Revolution; it doesn't really come as a surprise to me, as he was very enthousiastic about the controller when it was revealed. Still, it's nice to have some confirmation.

Kid Icarus

knowing kojimas previous stance on Nintendo, with his graphic and sound hungry game designs, I'd say this is pry the best news on Rev development so far.

Kojima has never made anything I really enjoy, so I don't really care if he supports it or not. I am happy he's doing something for Rev, though. It should bring in some more people.

Kid Icarus
10-20-2005, 01:19 PM
Well, what it shows us is that the rev is going to at least be on par with X360 in terms of hardware. That's why I'm excited. MGSTTS was only purchased because Silicon Knights developed it. I couldn't really care less about a Kojima game, they're pretty much the same mechanics for 10-15 hours.

ThirdMarioBro

I hope Kojima brings us something good. We've certinally waited long enough. Now.......it's time to reveal what Mario Kart DS tracks we will be racing on at long last. This is the complete master list of everything that is on the card, BUT there are rumors floating around that sometime next year Nintendo could release an expansion track set for the game on a GBA cart much like they have with new Songs for Band Brothers in Japan. Anyways, here is the master list.

Retro Mode

Shell Cup
Mario Circuit 1 - Super Nintendo version
Moo Moo Farm - N64 version
Peach Circuit - Game Boy Advance version
Luigi Circuit - GameCube version

Banana Cup
Donut Plains 1 - SNES
Frappe Snowland - N64
Bowser Castle 2 - Game Boy Advance
Baby Park - Nintendo GameCube

Leaf Cup
Koopa Beach 2 -Super NES
Choco Mountain - Nintendo 64
Luigi Circuit - Game Boy Advance
Mushroom Bridge - GameCube

Lightning Cup
Choco Island 2 - SNES
Banshee Boardwalk -N64
Sky Garden -GBA
Yoshi Circuit -GCN

Nitro Mode

Mushroom Cup
Figure-8 Circuit
Yoshi Falls
Cheep Cheep Beach
Luigi's Mansion

Flower Cup
Desert Hills
Delfino Square
Waluigi Pinball
Shroom Ridge

Star Cup
DK Pass
Tick-Tock Clock
Mario Circuit
Airship Fortress

Special Cup
Wario Stadium
Peach Gardens
Bowser Castle
Rainbow Road

Tick Tock Clock sounds like the clock from Mario 64. That would be fu*king crazy, and do my eyes decieve me or are we going to be racing on the deck of the Doom Ship?!?!?!?!?!?:o HOT DAMN! That new Rainbow Road looked drunk (good), and the Retro track selection looks to be evenly balanced between the games and has an excellent selection except for Baby Park which was the biggest waste of time in the series in my opinion. Meh, one bad apple dosen't ruin the lot here. Horray for the return of Banshee Boardwalk, Koopa Beach 2, Yoshi's Circut from DD, the rainy Luigi Circuit from GBA (which should look beautiful in 3D), Frappe Snowland (which had music I'll never forget), Moo Moo farm, and good old Mario Circut 1, the place where it all began 13 years ago.

I'm happy as could be with this selection. They really did a good job balancing it out and picking the best stuff for competitive racing. It's going to be one hell of a Mario Kart in just over a month.

Who wants to help get a Technodrome tournament set up? Seeing as I'm yanno, one of 49 Premier Tournament Organizers for the Pokemon-tcg, I should be able to get it all set. Lol, we could even run it in swiss format, with a cut to a top % of players.

ThirdMarioBro
10-21-2005, 12:42 AM
Actually, why don't we set that up? You're the tournament MC here, so you could probobly run it better than me anyway. AMN's having a tournament, but I'd rather play against you all anyway. It's more fun with people you know.

We could like wait until around Thanksgiving Day Weekend for everyone to get good with the game (or just get home *points to self*) and then all gather up here, get on each other's DS buddy lists, then frag the hell out of each other.

Only problem I see is scorekeeping and recordkeeping. How would we do that? We could post the scores here in a deadicated stickied thread after each round and play in sets of 4 player elimination rounds, or we could all chat via Ventrillo or Skype with Mics and headsets while playing.

How do you think we should do it?

Kid Icarus
10-21-2005, 02:30 AM
Hm... well, here's my take.

Tournament format
Swiss format tournament with rounds depending on how many entrants we have. We'd be looking at 3 'qualifying' type rounds in this format, comapred to the single elimination tournament format. Swiss works on a point system, and compares those to find top placements. After the set number of Swiss rounds we cut into a single elimination 'finals' round, pry the top 4 players (if we have that, we might just have to go for a top two face off).

points are given as following:
win - 3 points
tie - 1 point
loss - zip

The tie's in there just incase, by some freak bizzare incedent that we get a tie. Better safe them sorry.

The first round is random. The second round, and so on up, is paired by the number of points each player has. If timmy as 1 point, and suzie has 12, they won't be playing. Instead that little girl would go up against someone with 12, and Timmy would pry go home crying, or so my experiance tells me.

For score keeping, we could always set up a crappy Yahoo! Group, and post the scores on there.

Matches:
The way I'm seeing it work is both people who face off have to send the results of the match, including times, or at least the loser of the match.

If match results are fradulenty reported from either person (changed, or not reported at all), it results in a loss of 6 points from each person.

Hefty penalty, but hey, they work. Taking points from both players also encourages that both people involved settle any drama crap outside of the reports. Hopefuly we're all mature enough not to be all "nuh huh- he lost!"... but if that happens, both people lose their points. (did i mention parents are amazed that i manage to keep their kids under controll? lol)

When both results are in for each round, we upated a simple html page with how many points each person has and rank it (this would be as easy as changing the values of each persons score in an ordered list, just set the numbers first then names second ;)).

Prizes:
As far as prizes go, I'm sure we could pry talk Mr. Spitfire or another of our resident artists into making some sort of "wow, i pw0nd your asses in the Technodrome Mario kart tournament" sig banner, similar to the awards given out yearly.

When:
And def. around Thanksgiving. Pry that weekend, when most of us should be free. We can always get that worked out, or have the tournament run for several days.

Random:
For communication, I personaly don't have a head set, and don't see any money comming up to buy one anytime soon. My computer also lacks a built in mic.... so yeah. poo. messengers, maybe an IRC room. I think I still remember how to set those up, and if not Ai should.

I know I tossed a lot of tournament gibber-jabber in there... so if you guys don't know what something means, just ask. It'll be a good warmup for next Sundays tournament for me :).

Different topic, but it's something that was bugging me.

The Proceeding is editorial content and is never meant to be published on an official outlet because it's too fu*king opinioniated. The opinions expressed are those of the author and the author alone. if you don't agree with them, then sue me :P

I had a pair of headphones in my bad at E3. I could only take what I could carry (and that was a laptop bag, swag bag, lunch, and 7 thumbdrives = broken back), but I used those headphones to hear the music in DS games so I could judge them. Music is damn important to me, especially with DS games that are carrying classic tunes with them. Namely, Mario Kart DS and New SMB.

If you don't remember, over the past gen, the whole Mario series and the DKC trilogy has been ported to GBA and on each and every one of them (mainly the DKC's, but Mario to a much lesser extent) have had the sound raped. The GBA has no audio chip and thus it had to be done in software. That means, no interpoliation, no reverb, only 6 of the 8 SNES channels could be reproduced, and sample quality was stuck at whatever they recorded it at, which as sh*t (SNES could process samples to increse their fidelity and make them sound crisp and clear.) Also, SNES audio was 32Hkz, and GBA was 16Khz.

Now, I'm not saying all GBA audio sucks. Wario Ware, Golden Sun, Minish Cap, Mario & Luigi and many others kick ass, but it was not meant in any way to copy SNES's quality. They worked with what they had, and made it sound terifficly amazing. Wario Ware's music is better than most GCN games. But trying to copy over old SNES tunes has been a desaster because the machine just wasnt built for it. They knew that when they omitted the audio processor, and ports have paid the price. It made me feel as though they didn't give a damn about the sound. They should have just redone all the music instead of porting it from the SNES carts, but they wanted to save a buck and fu8ked it up. If they had redone the music, it oculd have sounded great. Hell, Wario Ware's rendition of the Dr Mario music was better than the damn SNES version because they used a new MIDI setup sounded good on GBA and let the original composer remix his work....unlike the destroyed SMB and DKC ports.

Well, with Mario Kart DS, we've got 4 classic games worth of immortal tunes comming alone. I was scared that they were going to slop up, or just screw with the classic songs (Moo Moo Farm, Koopa Beach, ect) and they would wind up like sh*t like most modern Mario music has been going. Fortunately, I was wrong. The DS turns out to actually have the ability for it's sound chip to play back the original MIDI, MOD, SPC, and NSF formats of Nintendo's past consoles, meaning, the songs can be reproduced without attempting to remake them or tamper with them. That means, when I put on the headphones at E3, the system switched between SNES, N64, and Gamecube tunes at the drop of a hat, each sounding EXACTLY like the original source note for note. New SMB fired off the classic Mario All-Stars music, then switched to Dire Dire docks and the invincible music from SM64 perfectly. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Mario Kart looks to be fixing things. They seem to finally realize that if the music sucks ass alongside the classic stuff, people will start to think they're loosing it (like I've been thinking lately this gen because Sunshine's music was no Mario 64. Not even conparable). Twilight Princess better live up to what I'm xpecting musically. Either way, Mario Kart DS's new music was great from what I heard. Hell, some of it sounded like it was done with a mixture of old sample sets. New SMB was so damn good musically, seriously, I almost cried tears of joy at E3. Literally. If Revolution is half as good as we're getting now, I'll be more than content. Even Kenji Yamamoto is doing Metroid Prime 3 (thank you God), Jun Ishikawa did Kirby Canvas Curse, and Koji Kondo is doing Twilight by HIMSELF. No more of these sh*tty ne people underneath him that fu*ked up the Mario Parties or Golf and such (for the record, when Yasunori Mitsude did Mario Parties 1 & 2, I thought it was some of N64's best music. I don't even want to know who did 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 because they suck ass)

Sorry for rambeling on, but the music is important to me. When the machine can play all of that music just like it sounded years ago, and not in some raped form, it makes me feel like the machine is carrying with it a small part of the soul of that era. NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube have all felt vastly different in terms of style, and I feel like the DS has a little of each of them in it which is why it's not my favorite gaming console ever, period. I'm just glad they preserved it so well this time around, unlike GBA's misfortune of not having a sound chip. I fear the Final Fantasy ports are going to get it up the ass. I was hoping they would come to DS so the sound would be better than the originals, but now it's going to be hard as hell just to get it passable. Sad. :(

Okay, I feel better now.

Kid Icarus

Never fear... FF3DS to the rescue (Square needs to hop off the stupid bandwagon with their titles quick though... christ. FF3D...s. ).

My bet is that the rev has built in emulation to the hardware, so it should be the exact same sound comming from the speakers as was included with the original game. I just hope, on some, they increase the channel support to at least 5.1. I'm bored with my NES games sounding like crap in 5.1, and i'd be terrified to hear them in 7.1 >_<.

ThirdMarioBro
10-22-2005, 03:57 AM
Well, here's what I hear. The hardware comes bundled with the emulators built into the hardware, or merged with the roms you download. But, they talked about offering enhanced versions of classics. You know, imagine SMB3 with hand-drawn animation and such, but with the sound reprocessed in 7.1 (which Revolution supports) and with the samples running at higher frequences with audio filters enabled. It'd be SNES music....live. I'm looking forward to these classic updates almost as much as the new Revolution software itself.

Star Tropics in 3D, DKC...but with the real time render models this time....damn. Even Dr. Mario would look good with a polygonal bottle up there. SMB3 with handdrawn sprites, or 3D renders, but with the original physics (like the New SMB has). That would be freaky as hell. And of course they could all come packaged with the original versions for historical value and for those that can't adjust to the changes.

Goddamn Nintendo, you're going to take all my money. Geez.

Ah, the pages work now. Nice articles, very well written.

I definately agree with your stance on graphics. While they are of course a very important part of games, they should never be the focus, like Sony and Microsoft seem to emphasising (This is not a jab at either company, simply something I noticed). I have to say that from what I've seen of the 'next-gen' graphics, most of it seems to be simply current gen stuff at a higher resolution (With a couple of exceptions - MGS4 for one)...Or maybe I haven't looked hard enough. :ohwell:

As for the upgraded classic games, it sounds great, but I wouldn't count on it. Seems like it would be an awful lot of extra work. I could see a couple of big first-party titles getting makeovers though.

By the way, 'hand-drawn sprites' is redundant. Sprites are done by hand to begin with. ;)

ThirdMarioBro
10-24-2005, 05:13 PM
Well, they were edited by hand, but usually done in a computer. Only around late SNES did they actually start drawing them and scanning them into the game (Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger) and then it became standard after that.

Kid Icarus
10-24-2005, 05:33 PM
Well, Mecha... TMB and I were just talking a few minutes ago, and here's the idea...

Nintendo uses the 'remake' games as a solid way to train new employees. Nintendo's constantly expanding, and what better way to break people in by having them submerged in a game they know well, with a list of things to add, change, or overhaul?

I think it'd work wonders. That would also mean that employes at Nintendo arn't starting off on a project like Twilight Princess.

ThirdMarioBro

Nah, I mean that sprites have to be done pixel by pixel, so technically they are hand(Or mouse, if you prefer)-drawn. I do a lot of spriting myself so I know how big of a bitch it is. Current guestimates/rumors of release period are around July-September globally.

....but the rumor came from SPoNG, but...yeah.

Here's another example of an asshole curtosy of IGN's little party they held in Frisco. Minus one point for Revolution.

According to Reign, it appears that the Revolution does not offer what he believes to be what the next-generation of gaming will be all about as he insisted that next-gen gaming is going to be "all about the graphics.." He also stated that in his opinion, what Nintendo is offering with its new controller is going to make Nintendo fans in for "the most crappy, cheap, I-wish-I-hadn't-bought-it gimmicks ever."

Mm-hmm. This comming from a man who makes all his money peddling his graphics engine out to third parties who want to save dev time, making comments about a company that never uses licnesed engines, ever. Of course he will trash Revolution. He'll never be doing buisness on that machine. All of the products that license his technology will be on 360 and PS3, thus he should attend a Roundtable discussion to thrash the sole place his products won't be sold.

I really hate sleezy bastards like that, but oh well. What'cha going to do?

I really don't like the idea of subliscencing the Unreal 3.0 engine out to ****ing everyone, since everything seems to be running on it. Companies shouldn't be a bunch of slackasses. Develop your own goddamn engines, people! Nobody wants to be playing variations of the same game over and over again.

It royally pissed me off when Silicon Knights, a company who has been working on a perfect engine for Too Human for over 8 years, decided to give up and use UE 3.0.

Gamestop is going to kill me soon, I think.

Is it crazy that I've been stopping at the store once a day for the last few days to see if they've gotten Mario kart in early, and are selling it early as Gamestop has a habbit of doing?

So help me these next two days are going to be HELL.

Oh, and if I wasn't excited about the game enough, IGN just gave it a 9.5. With a stunning review.

I wouldn't be so excited about the IGN 9.5. Remember, they gave DOA: Extreme Beach Volleyball a 9.2. ;)

keep in mind that the Revolutions specs arn't going to have to be as high as the 360's or the PS3's, because it doesn't do HD.

I'm positive developers have seen the final hardware, seen the graphical capabilities, and are content with it. Infact, Square-Enix seems to be *very* impressed with the system. Wada's said they're going to support Revolution.

Also, remember... the Gamecube *is* weaker then the PS2, but the way the hardware's implimented gives it power on par to the Xbox.

And, really... who the **** cares? I'll be happy with a game that looks twice as good as RE4 or Zelda. Even kaplan's now retracted statements of 2-3 times more powerful is fine. A game three times as pretty as the new Zelda? Sure thing. A game that can controll three times as much AI as Pikmin? Great.

Okay, I'm back and I feel like sh*t. It's 3:30 AM here, been on the road for like 9 hours stright, my throught is sore, I think I got the flu, my nose is gushing about a quart a minute, and my head feels like it's about to explode. My fingers are numb from the fu*king Arkansas frost, and my Dad is acting like a royal asshole. I'm tired, haven't slept well all week, got 3 migranes in 5 days, and had fu*king evil cousins sling 4-wheeler mud on me and almost got castrated by a skinning knife. I swear, to hell with family reunions. I'm sick, tired, and worn out, and I missed the Mario Kart Wi-Fi launch to top off this awful November.

Flu or not, I'm going to Gamestop at 12:00 when they open tomorrow to 'hopefully' pick up my Mario Kart DS preorder. They were only supposed to hold it for 48 hours, but I sweet talked the manager into holding it for me for a week. It's been 6 days. I guess I'll find out if he made good on his promise in a few hours. Wish me luck. :( :(

Man, I am in the hole. Time to start digging, sick or not.

Nintendo has announced that their next generation console will include built in parental control options.
Nintendo of Europe has announced today that their upcoming next generation console, code-named the Nintendo Revolution will come pre-packaged with parental control features to control what games children are able to play.

The system's games will incorporate a segment of code designed to control the locking system present in all Nintendo Revolution's. To restrict access to a particular kind of game, users simply declare a password and a particular rating to forbid.

"Even though most Nintendo games are appropriate for all ages and the game ratings are clearly displayed on the front of every game package, this added feature encourages parents to take responsibility for the games their children play," said Jim Merrick, Senior Marketing Director, Nintendo of Europe

NoE has also confirmed today that this game control system will be made available in every region the console is released.

Stick with the Advanced Media Network for continued coverage of Nintendo's next generation console as we will bring you the latest news on the system as it develops.

source: AMN[

Damn, NOE is on the ball. How many Revo announcements have they made so far? NoA dosen't seem to say jack anymore. Anyways, good for NoE. Now, I see the parental control thing as a plus. Not that I give a fu*k, but Xbox had it and it did a good job of shutting up soccor momns real quick, and only 1% of users ever touched the damn thing. This could work out well.....unless some dumbass restricts all their children's games to 3+ or something

Nintendo Planning Zelda Movie?

November 18, 2005

by: Ray Almeda

REPORT: Reggie Fils-Aime claims that the company is already planning a Zelda film.
News hot off the gaming press include plans for making a motion-picture based on the undeniably beloved Legend of Zelda series. Mexican magazine Club Nintendo, basically the Spanish-language equivalent of Nintendo Power, quoted Nintendo executive vice-president of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime as saying that the company is indeed planning a Zelda film.

Knowing that the magazine is fully supported by Nintendo themselves, it's difficult to question the authenticity of this report. In addition to this response in the maagzine's letters section, Fils-Aime also mentioned the current back-stage efforts on the Metroid movie. With that, there was also pre-done notions discussing a Zelda film after that, with another Mario motion-picture possibly following.

Although the news may be a bit disheartening knowing that the Metroid movie has yet to begin production, the Zelda film may still be possible if the Samus Aran-based motion picture proves anticipated and successful.

Take this piece of news with a grain of sort, although knowing that the possibility still remains will have gamers giddy for the years to come.

The three times I've played on WFC it's worked fine. Those three times, however, were at hotspots (twice as one McDonalds, and another at a local coffee house. caffine + mario kart for teh win!).

The reason I haven't played at home? My router *will not* give my DS an IP addy, and to set the DS to a static IP I need all kinds of info my router just isn't giving me.

That and we have a wonky internet set up here. My roommates are running an AirPort Express for their Apple machines, and my router's piggybacking off of that AirPort. I have all *my* settings right, so I'm assuming it's *their* router that's ****ing me over.

Anyway, back to the server crash... I don't think Nintendo expected so many people to get online with the game all at once. If you look at the little chart on the site, there was a MASSIVE spike Monday morning.

And welcome back TMB. Now, hurry up and get your copy, gimme your friend code, and we'll race.

Haha, that reminds me... I didn't realize how much fun it is to pownzor people you don't know. I'm sure the folks at McDonalds think I'm strange... I was saying things like "oh yeah... you like that shell, huh?".

Yup, I was up all night playing people on the global setting. It was easy to set up actually. Gave me a little trouble scanning for the Linksys router, but once it found it, it's been perfect since. I'm up and running within 30 seconds of booting the system. Man, I never imagined I'd have a fully functional online service with Mario Kart in my pocket. Two years ago, this would have been unimagineable. I wonder what Rev will have concerning Wi-Fi with a full console's power to back it up......

Sweet Jesus, it's different from CPU players when you play this. Yeah, there's no in-game chat feature, but who cares we can use MSN for that. The key here is playing against real people has always been what made the MK series fun. CPU players were always cheap bastards that the game would speed up randomally to keep the race competitive. Here, it's all skill. I had a race last night where me and 3 other elite guys were running neck and neck with each other to the finish line in Luigi's Mansion. Hell, the place marker had to have gone back and forth to 1st, 2nd, 4th, 1st, 3rd, and so on for like 20 seconds. I won by like 2 pixels difference. That's the kind of race I've always wanted from Mario Kart. This really is the best damn game in the series. Even without the online it still would be, but really. Now that we have the online, there really is no going back. This is a whole new generation. FINALLY! *dances around the room*

I hope they keep the classic track thing going. Perhaps make all the classic tracks available for Download on the Revolution service with it's Mario Kart? Man, seeing old Block Fort all freash and re-textured brought a tear to my eye. I've missed it. That pathetic Block City sh*t arena from MKDouble Dash was a sad substitute. I love Block Fort.........as if you didn't already know that  It's just perfectly designed to fit any situation. I hope to see it online someday though. Air bombing people in the center from the west high bridge is so damn sweet.

Read that. It's the best editorial I've read in some time.

Here's another editorial quote concerning Mario Kart Double Dash now obvious lack of quality in 2003....

Tinkering of the Mario Kart formula, too, was misguided. Since the Gamecube offered no great leaps from the N64 [other than graphics], Nintendo looked to game formulas for updating (cel-shaded Zelda, Mario with a waterpack etc.); in MKDD’s case, the titular duality indicated a attention to numbers.

Now, a lot of people were pissed over those decisions there. I was pissed over the water pack and Double Dash in general. Those concept didn't need updating, but Nintendo was just trying to find some way to advance their game concepts, which were already basically perfect (MK64, Super Mario 64 ect) because they had conformed to the standard and just released an updated console with superior specs and such like everyone else because it was what people seemed to expect.

That is what happens when Nintendo tries to go with the flow rather than lead a new path. They fu*k up because that's not what they do. This is exactly why I have a firm belief that the Revolution generation will be the complete opposite and games will be far better and more creative than we have ever seen before.

Very, very true. Infact, this Thanksgiving is going to go down as the day my *entire* family became addicted to DDR. And I'm not kidding. My olmost-50 year old mother, and her 50+ year old boyfriend, were on the pads stomping along to the music this morning. My sister, and her Nintend-hating boyfriend, jammed out to Here We Go! My nephew tried his damnedst to breakdance on the pads, in one song missing *every* note that came by. My niece grasped the game, and by the end of the day was giving me a run for my money.

So yeah, Thanksgiving '05 was made memorable not by the fact that it was the first meal I've cooked for my family (actual, "this needs more of X spice" cooking, by the way), not all of us being together, but everyone having fun playing the goofy little kid dance game with Mario and Luigi.

I was just at my friend's house and was alarmed to find a black GBC Cartridge called "Super Mario Sunshine" with graphics from Mario Party 2 on the label. I demanded to know what the hell I was looking at, and he proceeded to explain that it was some bootleg game from Israel or something. So out of curiousity, I grab his GBA in throw it in, and what do I find but a title screen saying "Super Mario Sunshine"...with pictures DK and Diddy Kong. Mind you, Mario and Luigi were on the cover. But they are nowhere to be found in this game. When you start, you're essentialy thrown into a DK-ified version of Super Mario Bros., playing as a blue, fireball hurling DK. Instead of Goombas, there are rodents. Instead of Koopas, there are armadillos. Instaed of coins, there are (you guessed it) bananas. And when you get hit, you shrink into Diddy.

And it's called "Super Mario Sunshine".

I'm deeply confused by this abomination of gaming on so many levels....

If there's a firewall up, you're going to have some problems. Make sure that's off. You can also try using DMZ in your router settings if you know how to do that. If not, try the router manual.

According to that, Nintendo's already well prepped for E3 and is telling the press to be ready to go for the Revolution unveiling.

TMB, you lucky lucky son of a bitch. That's all I have to say.

That and I hope to god I can get tickets to go this year.

Nope. Don't have one. Got a Linksys router for my laptop, and the DS seems to get along fine with it.

That and I hope to god I can get tickets to go this year.

If I can find any way to help, believe me, I will.

We'll get more leading up to it, I'm sure. NOE's been oddly quiet lately... something bigger's pry about to comeout

Still, I know we won't see screens until E3, and i doubt we'll ever see hardware numbers. And I'm okay with that. If it looks good, I'll just ask PS3 and 360 gamers if they have small dicks, because they have to compare system specs to make them feel better.

NOA's confirmed it on their boards.

Apparently, Konami wasn't making the pads for the game, Nintendo was. So yeah... I bet you Konami didn't like that much.

Although, if it goes to court, Nintendo'll pry easily win. Exhibit A: The Power Pad. Factor in Nintendo's never lost a court case... and yeah. Scary times for Konami.

Ugh. Oh well, I have my copy and 2 pads, and next paycheck I'm modding them.

the mat, carpet sections under that to raise the triggers, carpet padding under the carpet so I can hop until I drop, then all of that on plywood with some non-lip sticky stuff on the bottom. If they turn out good, I'll put up exact measurements for stuff, and a pricing guide.

Now I'm half tempted to get one. Are there any lag issues on it?

ThirdMarioBro
12-02-2005, 04:49 AM
It will of course depend on the connection you have, but if you have DSL or Cable, then no. I've never seen lag except when playing against people trying to use satellite internet.

So yeah, when we were playing, there was no lag whatsoever that I noticed. Sometimes trying to get in the same match with each other was a pain (like last night), but that depends on server load, and Nintendo's fixing that as we speak. They got more demand than they were expecting, so they're getting more servers to compensate.

Basically, for a first online attempt, the Wi-Fi service works teriffic. Yeah, the interface is a little primitive, but hey, it's a handheld. There isn't any lag on good connections (and Ai and Peanut were both using the USB dongle and I was at the far end of my Router's range), and Mario Kart as a game itself is absoultelty the best game in the whole series hands down.

In other words, go buy it and get in here racing with us :D :D :D

Some sales data...

ACWW sold out in Japan in less then a week.

The DS, the week Animal Crossing came out, sold a whopping 132,012 units, olmost three times as much as the PSP.

All I've gotta say is damn.

Peanut

Dr. Doom
12-02-2005, 10:45 AM
I'm a little lost on the basic concept whole Wi-Fi thing. Where's the connection coming from? I guess I always kinda got the impression that it worked the same way a cell-phone did, just kinda...always in touch with whatever waves it's absorbing in the communicative process... I dunno.

Kid Icarus
12-02-2005, 01:49 PM
WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity.

You have to shell out the cash for a WiFi router, either 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11preN, or 802.11a. As far as I know, those are the only ones out for the consumer market.

The way it works, is you plug your broadband modem (usually cable, although DSL should work just as well) into the router, and it networks and splits the internet connection like a wired router, just with out the need to string tons of ethernet cable through your house.

The Nintendo DS uses 802.11b, but B will work with each of the formats, except 802.11a. 802.11a uses a diffrent wave patter then the G, B, or PreN, so it won't be able to pick it up. Think TV waves vs. radio waves.

Ai could pry explain most of this better then I can, but I know that covers most of it.

Anywho, I'll be online tonight around 10:40 central time, bizatches. So you'd all better be on with your DS's, ready to be pwond. Word foolz. Fear my mighty 2-15 rating!

Whoever you're connecting to has to also put in your code to get a connection, but other than that, I guess it's just when the network feels like it. *shrugs*

My main gripe with MKDS is that you can't reconfigure the buttons. Though my hands have been well accustomed to every controller from the NES all the way down to even the fat DC, ugly Genesis, and tubby XBox controllers... it can't do the DS very well. My mind keeps thinking that it's a fat version of an SNES controller, but the button locations are just odd. When my thumb hits the A button, it cramps up over time, and the corner edge digs into my palm. What's worse is that when I snake, my left thumb gets a little sore too from constantly having to dig into it. Maybe it's just my problem, but I wish Nintendo allowed us to change their less intuitive button configs once in a while.
