I was just wondering, is anyone here interested in Japanese animation? I've got a whole list,

Inuyasha
Naruto
Fullmetal Alchemist
Evangalion
Ranma1/2
Hellsing
Detective Conan
Yu Yu Hakusho
etc

My current favourite is Fullmetal Alchemist, it's one of those stories that'll have you in tears if your the emotional type. I'd highly recommend it. Anyone else have a favourite?

My favorites are:

Sailor Moon (I downloaded the final season )
Dragonball/Z/GT (I've seen all in the original unedited Japanese format on International Channel  )
Tenchi Muyo/In Tokyo/ect. (The unedited version is just as hilarious as the kiddyfied version)
Ranma 1/2 (I have the entire Manga series)

Ugh, I watch to many to list them all. My current favourite is still Samurai Champloo though.

One Piece 1-35
I have those too but I never read them. I know all the stories from scanslations anyway and the German translation is just too painful to read. :dead:

Anarky
05-21-2005, 08:53 AM
Tell me about it. I mean, they seem not to speak German from times to times. "Bringt mir den Schwertfighter"... What the hell? Can't they say "Schwertkämpfer"? That would at least sound German. Anyhow, but I find Ruffy's voice in the anime exceptionally well chosen. It really suits him.

If you want to have a good translation, get BLAME! There's one mistake though. Dame Mensarb is supposed to be called Dame Mainserv. The French got that, ther German didn't.

I've heard of One Piece! Forgot to mention it in my list. The wacky animation takes some time to get use to, but my theory is if a cartoon/anime with weirdo character design is popular -then it must be good. :D (Though I, haven't actually read the series *cough*.)

I don't read Magna and I've only recently started to watch anime... That being said, I watch..

*Fullmetal Alchemist
*Ghost in the Shell (the movie)
*Cowboy Bebop (the movie, sometimes the tvshow)
*Visions of Escaflowne

My favorite would have to be Fullmetal Alchemist. The story is simply engrossing. I would have added Samurai Champloo to the list, but when it premiered on Adult Swim, it wasn't closed captioned, which pissed me off. It looks so badass though... pity.

Anarky

closed captioned

What does that mean and why is a show better if it has been closed captioned?

Mecha Cow
05-21-2005, 09:35 AM
I understand that he is deaf, so he needs closed captions (English subtitles) in order to follow the programme (Or was I missinformed here?).

Anyway, I'm not really an Anime/Manga fan, though I've seen FullMetal Alchemist and I really loved it. Great show.

I've also seen the standard stuff like DBZ and Gundam Wing etc. but I dunno if that counts.

Nope, not misinformed. Not only do closed captions tell me the dialogue (like english subtitles in movies), but they also tell me sounds (which english subtitles don't) like screaming or the rumbling of a machine or whatnot. Even though I DO go to the movies even if theaters don't have closed captioning (Went to the midnight primere of Episode III!), my viewing experience is vastly improved if I can understand the dialogue.

It's also the reason why I don't watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It isn't closed captioned.

Have you seen the 4Kids-Version? Then you'll be amazed what the real One Piece is all about. Ruffy isn't half as weird, I heard. Ruffy actually makes a lot of sense in the Manga.

You read MPD Psycho too?
Sure I did. I wouldn't miss something as twisted as that. Allthough I liked Anne Freaks a little better (I read them at about the same time).

Thanks for the info. So basically closed captions go like this?

Caption Hero: You're surrounded, give up
Caption Vilian: You'll never get me alive
Vilian jumps out of the window
Caption: Vilain laughs

Battle Angel

Have you read "Last Order"? How is it?

GK Punk

Last Order is pretty good. It's basically a new ending to the original series. It starts shortly before the original series ends. (which confused me when I started reading it!)

Hmm.. *looks at tv* Yeah.. I guess that's basically it. They're small black boxes with white text that shows up on tv. Most of the time its fairly accurate, but every once in a while its slightly off (more so if you watch old 80's tv shows) You live in Germany, right? hmm... I wonder if televisions in Germany are set up the same way as they are in America. If so you make it so that your tv could show you closed captions, (Go to captions under the menu, and adjust the options... here the captions are turned on and set to the CC1 mode), so you could actually see for yourself what they look like. Sorry if the directions are slightly vague.. its easier to show rather than tell.

We do have "subtitles for the deaf" as they call it, which I find rather discriminating. We just have them in a system called Teletext. But there's about 1 out of 20 movies with those subtitles. I just wanted to know whether we're talking about the same thing.

Well, actually the only time I've seen One Piece on TV is in Japanese with no captions at my cousin's house. He has all these piles of Anime CD's I've never even heard of, most downloaded off the internet. As I said before, the animation was weird, it featured Ruffy (is it Ruffy or Luffy?) extending his arm all the way up a mountain while riding his bike and yelling in Japanese. That is if I remembered correctly. The next time I've seen it was in the Manga that I picked out randomly at a city store. That one I read but didn't get around to buy. :P
Of course the English manga made alot more sence and I came to like One Piece after that. I'm not in love with it like TMNT, but if it's ever on I'll watch it. (Unfortunately I don't have cable so it'll have to be on Network TV. :ohwell: )

Oh and for IceFlash78 and Mecha_Cow;

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST RULZ

Shamen King and Alchemist at this moment, are both excellent mangas, in Alchemsist' case, the dubbed anime is the finest effort since Cowboy Bebop

Naruto? Overated.

Inyushua? Overuses cliched romance I've seen a billion times

I'm not a big anime/manga fan. Typically, I'll like something if it's GOOD, not just becuase it was made in Japan.

However, a thread like this came up at another forum so I'll just cut and paste my response:

No particular order...

Cowboy Bebop: This wasn't awesome because it was anime, it was awesome because it was clever, action-packed, beautifully animated, and the music was superb. Add to that some of the best voice acting I've ever heard (from the American cast) and this show was just great.

Sonic X: What I loved about this show is that it tried to appeal not only to a Japanese audience, but a Western audience as well. Tons of references and spoofs on American cinema and television, it never got too Japanese in appearance or gags, but never to American either. It was a great east/west blend. Plus it adapted the stories from the games very well and the Japanese music and voice acting is some of the best I've ever heard. That and the show never took itslef too seriously when it didn't have to. Lots of self-referencial humor, often breaking the 4th wall, but it always knew when not to kid around (like the SA2 arc).

Lupin III: I'm crazy about Lupin III, I'll admit. I've seen just about every film, tv movie and OVA and I own nearly every episode of all 3 television shows. I even wrote some episode reviews of the third series for the Lupin encyclopedea website. The plots are very episodic, so the whole thing is driven by the characters. And the characters are just so much fun once you get to know them. Jigen's my favorite, for those who care. Anyway, Lupin's a lot of fun. The Japanese cast is fantastic, but so are the voice actors who do the ADV dub (and the new jokes they throw in are even better).

Devilman: It's a lot like "Japanese Spawn", even though it came first by well over 2 decades, and I'm a big Spawn fan. The story is all about demons and hell and everything is so freaken brutal, it's amazing. I recommend the 3 OVAs made in the 80s and the 90s pver the original television series. The original television series made in the 70s is kinda tame after you've seen the OVAs, but still some campy fun. Anyway, a demon tearing off a chick's boob and then eating it like a Reeces cup HAS to be good.

Akira: The original dub, none of that "Vash the Stampede" sh*t. To me, Kaneda can only be voiced by Cam Clarke. Anyway, it was one of the first animes I ever saw, long before I knw what anime was. So it has a special place in my heart. The story's a bit convuluted, but the animation's purdy, the voices are good and the action is intense and graphic.

Grave of the Fireflies: I watched it and it was just as depressing and somber as every review told me it would be. I showed it to my Mother and she really enjoyed it. A very powerful film, to be sure. And a nice look at the events of WWII from Japan's POV.

Greggory Horror Show: This has it's ups and downs, but it can be pretty gruesome at times. My favorite was in the first arc, with the guy eating a bowl of soup and spitting out someone else's tooth. Creepy. It can get a little..."overly poetic" or just plain melodramatic, but it's still a lot of fun. The characters are all unique and very surreal.

The Guyver: I was first introduced the Guyver by the live action movies, which I enjoyed. The character designs in the show were always very rich and detailed; the Zoanoids were fantastic-looking. Plus, the Guyver's were just cool.

American Cartoons Drawn by Japanese People That I Liked:

Thundercats
Batman: TAS
The Hobbit
The Real Ghostbusters
HBO's Spawn
GI Joe
Animainiacs/Pinky & the Brain

and plenty more, I'm sure

Well, Ruffy (I think both names are accepted allthough I'm more used to Ruffy, since that's his name in German, Ruffy D. Monkey) ate the GumGum Fruit as a kid, which enables him to stretch his bodyparts, making him almost invulnerable. But, he can't swim, because he ate that fruit. He becomes a pirate nontheless. And yes, Ruffy's constantly yelling. That's what he does.

I'm not sure but I think Germany is the only country that has him named "Ruffy". The original Japanese name is "Luffy". Usopp's and Zoro's names were also changed here. I have no clue why though.

So far, I like -

Anime
- Fruits Basket
- Trigun
- Galexy Angel (don't know why. i just do)
- Ghost in the Shell
- And some others I can't think of right now (there's so many!)

Manga
- Fruits Basket
- Yugi-oh (they kiddied down the TV show so much. Yugi basically bashes all of his appontents. Besides, they have the Winged Dragon of Ra in there :D)
- Dragon Knights. I havn't read it, but my god, I will
- another one i want to read is about this guy who failed his Uni exam and is now care taking this house with five women in it. I didn't quite get the name though...

The OVA did a good job of telling that part of the story. I'm still not sure why they needed to add Chrien in to the story, but she was a pretty alright character so It's forgiveable.

I kind of wish they'd have done more of the OVA. There were certain parts of the Manga that would have been great to see animated. But I hear the James Cameron Battle Angel film will combine the Volume 1 and Volume 3 story lines, and that should be REALLY cool if done right.

Hi, I am going to chime in here.
I just started to get into anime not that long ago.

It started with INuyasha (Sesshomaru RockS!!)
I also watched Cowboy Bebop and Trigun every now and then. SAme thing with Kenshin.
But when ever I need a good laugh its Abenobashi time.

Also, I just started watching Samurai Champloo on CN and from what I saw I think JIn is a total bad @^^.

I don't read MAnga, beacuse I don't really have a lot of free time to do the reading.
