View Full Version : Your Favourite Games of This Generation!

As we all know, with November closing in quick and with the last "huge" release of this generation (Twilight Princess) delayed, this generation is coming quickly to an end. It's been a great ride and I can't believe it's over already, but we're heading into Console War 4 now!
Sega vs Nintendo.
Sega vs Nintendo vs Sony.
Then this year, the demise of one company and the rise of a new one.
Sony vs Nintendo vs Microsoft.
It's probably a battle we're going to have a ton of renditions of, but this thread isn't about the next generation. It's about the current one. There have been a ton of great games this generation. Which were your favourite? They don't need to be in order or anything, but I'd like to know what everyone thought was the best. Maybe even put a couple reasons why. I suppose you could put GBA games, since they seem to be coming to an end.
A couple of us have been talking about a kind of Drome Video Game Awards, so maybe this is a precursor. I type of nomination ceremony. Anyways, I'm always interested in hearing what games others enjoyed, so lets do this!
These are my picks, not in any special order.
1. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)
I just love this game all around. One of the few RPG's that captures my entire attention, probably because of the great battling system. I also love the graphic style of the whole thing.
2. The Elders Scrolls III: Morrowind (PC/XBOX)
This game owned my life for a looooong time. I've spent hundreds of hours with it, and I never got tired of it. Any game that can sidetrack me from the main quest for over 80 hours is well worth anyones time. One of my favourite games of ALL TIME.
3. Price of Persia: Sands of Time & Warrior Within (Multi)
I'd firstly like to thank one of my good Drome pals, Barkworm, for getting me into this game. He encouraged me to pick it up and when I did, I fell in love! I probably played through SoT more than any game this generation. Ten, eleven, fourteen times. I can't remember. It's just so amazing. I love the environmental puzzles.
4. Halo 2 (XBOX)
I hated the first Halo so badly. The whole "three good levels then STRAIGHT TO HELL" thing really pissed me off, but the sequel really fixed that problem. I loved the story, I even went and bought the books, which is quite rare for me to do with a videogame. I played it online more than any other game ever and I'd probably still be playing if my Xbox never exploded.
5. Animal Crossing (GCN)
I played this game everyday for an entire YEAR. How many games can you do that with? (MMORPG's withstanding) I completely love this game, the, "Seinfeld of videogames!" a game about nothing! Everyone should at least give this game a chance, because it's addictive and once you get in you can't get out!
6. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN)
It's Smash Bros! If you haven't played this at least once...why are you in this section? This game rules so hard, probably the best game to crack out with a bunch of friends. It's also the best way to annoy said friends. Pika Pika, anyone?
7. Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
One of the few PS2 games I really fell in love with this gen. It's totally not my style and I know there's more than a few people who'll be surprised to see me list this as one of my favourites this generation, but it's true. The story is amazing, and the Disney characters are just awesome. Even the FF characters are really cool!
8. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN)
I love this game, every single bit of it. Even the endless sailing. I just love the presentation. The best looking of all Zelda games, IMO. That includes the forth coming Twilight Princess. Everything about this game is golden to me, I especially love the end battle with old Ganon big nose. This is my favourite Zelda. Yes, it even beats LttP and OoT in my book.
9. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC/XBOX)
God, I love this game. I've been through it six or seven times at least. The Dark Side/Good Side stuff is awesome, it's also an amazingly funny game. So much depth, and based on the D&D ruleset. (I <3 D&D) Plus...this is a Star Wars game, dammit! Star Wars rocks!!!
10. Conker: Live and Reloaded (XBOX)
Platforming genius! Amazingly funny, AWESOME music and more gameplay variation than you can shake a stick at! Loved it on 64, love it more on Xbox. Especially with the added multiplayer mode.
11. Super Mario Sunshine (GCN)
I know some people were disappointed with this game, but I thought it was awesome. Sure, FLUDD wasn't all that great, but I thought it was still amazingly fun. I especially loved the little mini platforming levels, challenging as hell and fun to boot! When does ol' Mario ever disappoint?
And there she is! All of my complete favourites of this gen. I may have missed one or two, but I don't think so. So, anyone else?

F-Zero GX (best racing game ever)
Viewtiful Joe
Baten Kaitos
Killer 7
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes
I agree with everything Peanut mentioned except Elder Scrolls III, because I have yet to play it. I really should.
Killer7 (Multi)
This game is unreal. The graphics are a unique style of art, the plot is absolutely insane, and the characters are so twisted that I love them for it. It's a real classic pumped out by a classic company, known as Capcom.
Kirby: Canvas Curse (DS)
I don't own too many DS games, but this game really stands out. The innovative way of playing and manipulating Kirby is amazing beyond words. I never get tired of drawing rainbow roads. Never. I'm not finished playing it, but I love every time I throw it in.
Resident Evil 4 (GCN)
This game is a true masterpiece. The Resident Evil team really outdid themselves with this one. With amazing lighting effects, a difficult but cool aiming system, and awesome plot, this game takes survival horror to the next level. I suggest everyone gives it a shot, whether you played the older games or no.
Suikoden III (PS2)
I'm a major RPG fan. I've been playing RPG's since 1990. This game has two predacessors on the original Playstation, and while they are better than this one, I can't help but mention this wonderful game. It gives all the fancy RPG mechanics that you ask for: story, random battles, magic system, etc. What makes this game unique to the others is the battle system. You get six in your party, and there's combos and such. I love it. I need it.
Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
I'm a major fan of the Metal Gear series. I've been playing them since the beginning. I always loved the way you had to sneak around, even though it was really easy to do so at some points in the game. I first played this game through the demo provided with the Zone of the Enders game that is also on PS2. I fell in love with it the moment I popped in the disc and started the Tanker mission. I couldn't put it down. The graphics improved so much from the original on Playstation. The first-person aiming system really gave you an edge when taking down enemies. And the story was as twisted as ever. Awesome game.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Same goes with this game. Simply wonderful.
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
There's not a whole lot to say about this game except that it was a nice change of plot when they added the whole religion thing into the mix. The sphere grid wasn't so bad, either, once you got used to it. By the time I was done with the game, I could hit for all 9's with Lulu. That's how much I owned that game. Good stuff.
Metroid Prime 1 & 2 (GCN)
I never imagined this type of game could ever work for Metroid. First person shooter? It sounded like complete and utter nonsense to me at first. But when I picked the game up and started playing, I knew they did everything right, and it was a real classic taken to the next level. The graphics were amazing, the item collection thrill was still there, you could do everything you could in the side-scrolling games only in 3D, and I was totally floored. I know some people don't like the change, but they need to broaden their horizons when it comes to gaming.
Metroid Fusion & Zero Mission (GBA)
These two games were so eerily like Super Metroid, that I couldn't help but love them. I liked the idea of remaking the original Metroid with better graphics and the ability to actually aim in different directions. Fusion was really fun to play, because I was constantly scared of coming into contact with SA-X. It was scary, man! Scary as hell. Other than that, both great games.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)
Finally, we come to this game. I'm a huge fan of the twin brother on the original Playstation. I always loved the combination of RTS and RPG into one game, and this game did it quite well. The different jobs available for your party was a very nice touch. I could customize my group into an invincible fighting force. Simply wonderful.
That's all for me. I'm sure I forgot some games, but I'll leave it as is.

well I guess this will just end up being a very shortened version of my patented 30 Favorites list....let me get to that.

Doom, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I'd firstly like to thank one of my good Drome pals, Barkworm, for getting me into this game. He encouraged me to pick it up and when I did, I fell in love!
I live to serve! :D
Anyway I think it's a little too early for a list like that since this generation is not dead yet. There are about three PS2 games I'm REALLY looking forward to and then of course, there's the new Zelda!
If I had to make my list today, it would probably look soemthing like this:
- PoP: Sands of Time (Now that I'm playing ICO, I do think that some aspects of "Sands" are clearly influencd by it. Since ICO is great, that's not the worst thing)
- Final Fantasy X (I love almost everything about this one. Except Blitzball. Blitzball sucks.)
- Zelda: Wind Waker (Probably my favourite this gen.)
- MGS2: Sons of Liberty (minus the last 20 minutes)
- Dark Cloud 2: Dark Chronicle (Another awesome game that did not get the respect it deserved.)
- Metroid Fusion (I'm probably the only one who likes this one much better than "Zero Mission")
- Zelda: The Minish Cap (It's Zelda.)
- Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (I just love this game. I love games with squirrel-ish heroes who wield lots of guns.)
- Eternal Darkness (Two words: Sanity metre.)
- God of War (AREEEEES!!!!)

To choose what I enjoyed most. It's been a hell of a five years, and a hell of a ride. Hard to believe it's already over so soon. I remember the Playstation 2 launch so vividly, and the Xbox with people laughing at Microsoft's attempt to get into gaming. I remember the scrutinity Nintendo took after N64. They've all three come so far from those days. The games we played these past five years have been nothing short of the best gaming experiences of my life. I won't list them in any particular order...except for the last few.
Luigi's Mansion
I honestly thought this game would be a joke until I played it. I mean, a vaccume. What fun was that?!? Apprently quite a bit it seems. Luigi's mansion was a game that was funny and lighthearted (scaring Toad on the crapper), but could spook you too when a shadow was sneaking up behind you with nothing casting it. Luigi's first time in the spotlight was a blast.
Star Fox Adventures
Rare's farewell to Nintendo and the game that almost got cancelled. By the time I played it, I knew it would be the last collabration between the two I would ever see. It was a hard farewell. I had to hold back tears when it was over. Rare's talents for making a world and bringing it to life were in full force here. Some people hated this, but I'm not one of them. It's Zelda with fur, and it's pure 100% Rare. I treasure this game.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The game that made the world yell "WHAT THE FU*K NINTENDO"....until we played it. The game was a fu*king piece of art. A moving oil painting telling a story. I mean, even that wasted time in the ship training in Pirate ways was a blast. This is one of Miyamoto's true masterpieces. I treasure it with all my heart.
Super Mario Sunshine
It's Mario is a Hawaian shirt and sunglasses. Do I need any other reason? It may have just been Mario 64 with a jetpack, but who gives a damn. It was fun, filled with classic references, and just so damn expansive. I still can't find all those damn blue coins.
F-Zero GX
I guess you can say it was my farewell to F-Zero before it all fell apart. It is in my mind, the ultimate racing game, ever, period. Nothing is faster, controls better, looks more beautiful, or means more. It brought Nintendo and Sega together on time to create something of beauty. I'll treasure this game til the day I die. It was pure F-Zero, made my a team of fans at Sega who gave is Daytona. Thanks Sega for giving me one last F-Zero I could teasure
Star Fox Assualt
Honestly, what do people see wrong with this game? Yeah, the multiplayer sucks ass, but whatever. Orchestrated music, cinamatic presentation, Star Trek level distruction, and exploding pigs. This is Star Fox at it's absoute best. I loved this sucker from the moment the opening cinema kicked up.
Super Smash Bros Melee
Fu*k Mario Party (and the same old sh*t year after year), fu*k Double Dash (and it's raped battle mode), this is the ultimate fighter of the generation. It's the ultimate party game of all time. Nintendo will have hell beating this and they know it. I pity HAL, because they must beat their own perfection. You guys can do it.
Wario Ware
Simply put, this has to be one of the greatest games of all time. Intelligent Systems are the second best developers in the whole damn industry in my mind. Wario Ware is the ultimate portable game, and has style pouring out of every cavity. You can play it forever, and ever, and ever, and never get tired of it. I never get tired of hearing Wario yell "WA-HOOO"
Resident Evil 4
Capcom, fu*k you. This is all about Shinji Mikimi's genius. He created the most graphical intense game I ever looked upon, and bested Nintendo's standard so that they must beat it now. The man is a god, and should be worshiped. This game is perfect in every way. Period.
Killer 7
This is without a doubt, the most fu*ked up video game ever produced by human hands and we all know it. That's why it's so damn good. Sh*t talk, sex, annorexic girls with lethal blood, and guns, guns, guns. You can't beat this sh*t. Ever. This sucker is a work of art. That's all there is to it. Play it or I'll come and chop off your head.
Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga
This is my absoulte favourite Game Boy...no, portable game ever. It's timeless, classic, funny, challenging, and amazingly planned out. So much heart went into this game it's just silly. I can't say much about this other than that it's perfect. If you haven't played it, then shame on you. It's my favourite handheld title ever, period.
Metroid Prime
This is is. Zelda, you got your work cut out for you because this is the best game I've played all generation. Metroid is like one of the greatest things ever made by human hands. Then Nintendo goes and exports it to Texas. I as mortified. I damned them, condemned them, cursed them, forsake them...then thought, "maybe it'll work out". Then they announced it was a FPS. I was getting ready to storm their HQ with a gas can. then EGM said it was great. Even worse . Then I played it, and found one of the greatest games I've ever had the grace, privlidge and honour to play. Thank you Retro, for showing that you guys really are that good, and Nintendo, for putting up with all out sh*t in the meantime. I'll never forget this game as long as I live. It scared me, moved me, made me tap my foot, and took me to another world. It immersed me in the world of Tallon IV. It is, one of the few...a perfect game.
I'll stop there. There are countless others, but those are the most special to me. I'll leave Twilight Princess off until it's released, because it will be my farewell to this generation. This was a look back, but after Zelda, I'll have to let go. It's going to be hard, just like all the others, but the future waits for no one. I may sound like I take this gaming sh*t too seriously, but it means that much to me. I have a tendancy to fear change, and next gen has an assload of the,, but I believe that they will mostly be for the good of things. I trust Nintendo & Microsoft to take us new places in their respective realms. Here's looking forward to the future.
As far as disappointments go, I'll list Donkey Kong, F-Zero, and Kirby. Since rare left, DK is an empty shell. A hallow, soulless, mindless shell with a pasted grin. Nintendo ruined him with that goddamn Konga stuff. When I saw DK bongoing to Hilary Duff, I almost threw up in Wal-Mart. The DK I knew is gone forever.
Kirby almost bit it too. That stupid ass anime destroyed his image. Nintendo pulled the plug and spent a year trying to rebuild the franchise. They brought back Jun Ishikawa for music, and restored the original team for Canvas Curse, and they did it. They saved Kirby. I feel about him like I used to. Close call there *whew*
F-Zero....goodbye. GX was a timeless moment for me, and after it, it all went to hell. Horrible anime, horrible GBA games, soulless music remixes, and the death of the main Character to be replaced with a generic throwaway anime hero with a generic name. Damn you Nintendo for ruining my favorite racer. I'll never forget F-Zero.
Sonic almost crapped out during the Sammy thing. Sonic Heroes was dogshit and the Advance games fell out too. I thought he was going the way of DK, but no. Sonic has pulled out of it and is back on track. Thank Heavens too, because I can't live without Sonic.
Also, Mario Kart Double Dash was flawed. The racing was excellent, and Wario Coleseum is my favourite MK track period, but the Battle Mode was a raped monstrocity. That is unforgivable by all standards...at least until they apoligized for it, and fixed it with the DS (I played it, and they fixed it and improved it.) All is well with Mario Kart.
I guess that sums it up. It's been a hell of a 5 years. Here's to the next five, and may they kick just as much ass and more.

In no specific order:
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GC)
I think my love for this game is well documented on these forums; for me, this is the absolute perfect video game.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC)
An RPG that's actually FUN, and it proved that even Mario games can have a good story. Even better than the first.
Metroid Fusion (GBA)
The first Metroid game I ever played, and I was instantly in love.
Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
Even though it's way too short, I thought it was even greater than Fusion.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
Not as charming as the Paper Mario games, but still an amazing Action RPG. I can't wait for the sequel.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (GBA)
A bit lacking compared to the rest of the series, but even so it's a great game if you want to kill a bit of time.
Super Smash Brothers: Melee (GC)
I can't stand this game anymore. That should give you an idea of how much I've played it.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
The story was a mess, but it was an amazing game for its time.
Soul Calibur II (Multi)
The first fighting game that I really got into. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but I really enjoy playing this with my brother.
And probably a lot more that I forgot.

X-Men Legends
Just a great all-round X-Men game...that includes Gambit in the lineup. Can't wait for the new one
Halo 1 and 2
Just both brilliant FPSs. Brings back memories of being back at uni with me and my housemates playing them or the fun my friend and I had doing Legendary co-op.
Burnout 1, 2 and 4
Again, great memories of playing with friends. Especially 2 which my friend and I played a bit too much. 1 was the main reason I wanted a ps2 in the first place. 3 is left out because I was a bit disappointed and I didn't play it much with friends. Now, with an Xbox, 4 is sublime.
Fahrenheit
Just an incredibly great game
Timesplitters 2 and 3
Another one because of the memories of playing with friends either DM or Hard story mode.
Mashed
See previous for 'Good Memories'
KOTOR 1 and 2
A great pair of RPGs...with lightsabers! What more could you want?
Final Fantasy X
A good RPG, not great. Holds a special place again for memories.
GTA 1, 2 and 3
Brilliant games. Always a good story and so much to do. 3 might just be my favourite game ever...maybe.
Dynasty Warriors 3
Just a fun game for beating the crap out of dozens of people
FireFly

PC games are video games. I just think PC games will always be ahead of any consoles. Look at the technology, consoles are playing catch up. And you can only play through games, no other mods or cool programs. I still play my XBOX online time and time again. I guess I should list my 3 favorite games.
Metal Gear Solid 2 :Substance
Metal Gear Solid was always my favorite game, and when this came out I loved it, espically more towards the end. I can't wait to play 3 whenever it is released.
Halo 2
Was really fun to play when it first came out with my friends. Still fun to play online time to time, though my brothers play it all day everyday. I can't stand 9 year olds yelling in my ear all day.
Star Wars: Battlefront
Fun 3rd person shooter, something with a Battlefield 1942 style and star wars. Very fun game and something to pass the time when I'm tired of Halo 2.
Sorry if my post appeared as a flame.
Kid Icarus

SF, PC gamers are teh n00bz. They control like a pile of dog crap.
On to my list, with reasons 'cause I'm sick and bored outta my damned mind.
1. Resident Evil 4. I still haven't gotten past the castle, and this is easily the best 3D game of this generation, and possibly ever.
2. Eternal Darkness. Teh pwn0zr. A game where my character actually is effect by what's going on? About ****ing time.
3. Animal Crossing. This game's sapped so much of my life away, it's not even funny. And it still would have, if I didn't break down and buy the cheat disc to get all the NES games.
4. Wind Waker. Game was great, sans the Triforce hunt.
5. Donkey konga. No, not the second. The first one. Fun times.
6. Super Smash Bros. Melee. Duh.
7. Pikmin. Wh00t, die lil plant things! >_>. I mean, uh. Yeah....
8. Tales of Symphonia. I'm tired of writing reasons. I liked it. Meh.
9. Metroid Prime.
10. F-Zero GX.

I only have a handful of games this Gen that blew me away
Devil May Cry - Oh come on you guys saw this comming right? I just love every aspect of this game. The characters, story, gameplay, settings, music, controls. It's the perfect game to me.
Zone Of The Enders 2 - One of the best action games of all time. And by far the best mech game I have ever played. Everything about it is just so fun! And the visuals are breath taking.
Super Smash Brothers Melee - Never has a single fighting game offered me this much fun. And replay value either, espcially with friends.
Knights Of The Old Republic - It's an RPG, and one that kept me playing. Playing through it 4 times in fact. I like this game alot*I still need to play the new one* I love making all the choices and changeing the story along and such. I'm not even a fan of star wars and this game kept me intrested in it and to an extent still holds my intrest.
That's really it. I would add Resident Evil Nemesis but it wasn't this generation*Dispite the GC port*. I would like to add an RE game. But Zero didn't blow me away, REmake*Though wonderful* bores me now, and RE 4 also bores me to tears*Except Mercs mode which is still godly*

To each his own I guess, trunk I've always perferred the pinpoint accuracy of my mouse. I tend to never be able to aim exactly where I want to in Hl2...If you have a non optical mouse with less than 5 buttons, yes PC gaming does suck.

The only thing i hate about PC games is you have to upgrade your system alot because the graphics get so good that your graphics card gets out of date and you have to buy a new one to play new games. Why I like consoles is you get 5+ years of games and you don't need to upgrade. My friend plays all these FPS games on PC and it seems like he updates his graphics card once a year. Sometimes he has to do the soundcard too.

A good graphics card for about $300 lasts a couple years, longer if the rest of the system is adequate. I also save money on games, DoD:S was only $20 and I will go for months without playing another game, plus countless mods and new game modes. I play games from 2 years ago that don't require a card update...but I see what uou mean, upgrading can get expensive

I really see nothing I'd ever play on a PC. It seems like it's all FPS and RTS games. I'm more of an action-platformer kind of gamer and PC is the LAST place to look for those kinds of games.
Also, I know PC games are video games too. I meant you shouldn't come in and make a pointless statement that will just end up irritating other posters. It's good that you gave reasons later on though.

unfortunately, there is a lack of action games for the PC. I'm in it for the FPSes. Sorry about the little flame in my first post, was pretty stupid. My apologies. While were talking about favorite games of the gen what was your favorite console? Mine was the XBOX because of XBOX live and it was the only system witha good sleection of games that I liked to play.

It's all good, man. I was just trying to warn you before one of us acts out against you, as some of us (usually me) tend to do.
As for my favourite console; I would have to say a tie between Gamecube and Xbox, but Xbox may be slightly ahead just for the fact that I loved Morrowind more than anything this generation. I also played all my Third-Party games on Xbox. Gamecube, of course, had all the best exclusive stuff though.

Oh dammit, I forgot one.
Wario Land 4
This game is without a doubt as good as the original Mario Platformers. Intelligent Systems truly pwns all kinds of ass. This sucker's visuals are excellent, music is outstanding, atmosphere is untouchable. Damn, I just love it.
I wish they'd make a Wario Land 5.
Also, it's the only Nintendo game where if you listen hard enough, you'll hear the words "Motha Fu*kah" clear as day. Just poke around and you'll find it.
I don't really have time to list all the games I loved this generation but I will sometime soon. But right now I just want to say that this generation really rekindled my love for Nintendo. I really lost a lot of faith in Nintendo during the DC/N64/PS generation. I know N64 had some good games but very few of them really had the Nintendo magic that made me fall in love with the company. And to be honest Gameclub was the last of this generations system that I bought. And for a long time I had very few games for it but overtime that changed and now I own more NGC games than x-box & PS2 combined. I know this isn't a which console is better thread nor should it be but since it is a thread about the ending of this generation's consoles I just wanted to say that. And when I do have time to make my list and the reasons I loved these games it will definitely be weighted on the Nintendo side.

Sonic Adventure 2...... =0 Who would have guessed?!
That's two generations ago, unless you count the port to Gamecube.

Quake 2 - (playstation) 1999
a true classic, loved doom and wolfenstein, but quake 2 outshines them.
the music, the creepy stroggs, the bfg and in 1999 the graphic for quake 2 was breathtaking.
Grand Theft Auto - Vice city (playstation 2) 2002
dont like gta 3 or gta san andreas. reason i love vice city is becouse im a big Miami Vice fan and the game does take alot from the 80s legendary show.
you can almost feel youre in the 80s while playing, and all the great actors who has given their voices to the people of vice city. the music is fantastic.
almost every radio channel has at least 7 good songs.
Ratchet and Clank 3 - Up Your Arsenal (playstation 2) 2004
better than 1 and 2 in every way.
