Well, this took a lot of time and thought, and I decided against the Ninja Turtle. I decided that something small and meaningful was better.

So long as you dig it! How was the pain factor?
I've always wanted to get a small tattoo of an anchor on my arm, thanks to a life long fascination with sailing and naval history. Perhaps I will get it, when I hit some sort of big milestone, like completing a transatlantic sailing trip. (I can dream, can't I?)

It feels like bee stings, while its being done. No biggy. But I'm used to having surgeries regularly, so it may only be because of that. Though I don't recommend the wrist. Especially the inner wrist. Every so often, when the dude went over the veins or bone, it's burn like a bitch.
Afterwards it feels like a mild sunburn.
The numbers indicate the countdown to the end of the world. Not really the end of the world, but the point in time when you give yourself up for the people you care about. The point in time when you have a purpose.
Who says I'm a wuss?!
I was gonna get it on the length of my forearm, but my mom said I'd look like a refugee from the holocaust.

congratulations, brodie!
28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds... til the movie makes sense. Though that's a nice metaphor as well: not just "when you have purpose" but "the moment of clarity." Very cool statement about coming to grasp larger truths and then acting on them.
or a cool statement that you liked the dead bunny costume in that flick.
i prefer to think it's the former. ;)

I figure I might as well start one. Maybe people can post theirs, or get suggestions, or show ideas.
I'm currently sketching my next tattoo. Some input would be nice.
My idea is cartoon characters I grew up on, and influenced me into my chosen career field.
So far I have:
Mighty Max
Bucky O'Hare
and I'm thinking a Ninja Turtle, and possibly Bobby of Bobby's world, with his stuffed animal Webbly.

Raph's Girl
01-12-2006, 10:44 PM
I want at least 4 tatoos (maybe 5):
Raphael's head with the ribbons of his mask flowing in front near where his heart would be and the word's "Raph's Girl" in the ribbons (my mom thinks it's a cute idea. )
the Superman shield
a rat
and a Pegasus (or some sort of tatoo that deals with Stargate Atlantis)
But I might also get a penguin. I dunno. There's many things I'd like for a tat.

I'd recommend finding a good shot of each potential tattoo, printing/drawing them out and sticking them all over your bedroom, for at least six months. If by the end of the six months, you haven't torn down one of the pictures or still find yourself enamored with it, get it.
I've been half-heartedly considering getting a tattoo, but I'll probably only bite the bullet in celebration of some sort of milestone. I'd absolutely love to get "HOLD FAST" tattooed on my knuckles, but yeah... not gonna happen. So instead, a simple argyle print on the outside of each ankle. Permanent socks.

I'm planning on getting MBC on my forearm sometime soon. That's a definate, as well as a vintage Toronto Maple Leafs logo. A couple of my friends and I have been toying with the idea of a Triforce for awhile. Each of our tattoo's would have a seperate piece of the Triforce more illuminated than the other 2, which I think is a pretty cool idea.

When finances allow, I'm getting the Nintendo emblem on my upper left pec.

I have 4 tattoos...one on each upper arm, 1 on lower back, and one on right shoulder....
The ones on my arms are pracitally mirror images of each other: on the right a lion walking through high grasses on the African plain; the left has a tiger in the same pose, walking through a junlge...they both cover essentially my entire upper arms (from elbow to shoulder) and ran me about $600 each with color
(keep in mind, most tattoo artists charge about $100 an hour. My works were around 8 hours each. So technically, they coulda charged about $800. But he had done my other 2 on my back before so he gave me a deal. Usually, the minimum they will do may be some small chinese letter and even for just about 15 minutes of work will still run about $75. If they charge less, RUN don't walk away. Tattoos are expensive for a number of reasons, but one of the most important reasons is HYGIENE and SAFE PRACTICES. If they can afford to charge less THEY ARE CUTTING CORNERS. For those considering getting a tattoo PLEASE put as much (if not more) effort into chosing your shop to get it done in and the artist who will do it. No sense spending weeks researching the perfect art piece, just to go the nearest shop and get a slop job done which at best doesnt truly capture the art you were trying to portray and at worst causes some horrible infection.)
I feel very strongly on this so please feel free to PM me with any questions/concerns you may have....
Jo Dawn
01-13-2006, 09:29 PM
Very good advice!
Probably the MAIN reason that I don't have one is the whole hygiene thing.
And I thought of getting one on my lower back (Ivy) but I dunno. I'd probaby get a tiny one on my front, right side, down sorta by the bikini line.
Well, once I lose some weight, that is. Heh. ;) :)

Yeah that would be so cool, but pretty costly. Especially if we go with our other ideas. Where we have the Triforce, and that one piece brighter, then hav MBC in the triangles, and then each of us seperate and add a special thing to it, seeing how I like Raph, I wanted a sai going through the triforce and my name (JameO) on the handle of the sai. Who knows but the triforce with MBC is a definite!

I'm basically trying to get prices now, I'm probably just gonna get the blacks done, without color first. Then when more cash flows in I'll get it colored.
Anyone know how much an image about 4-5 inches tall and about 8 inches across might cost?
TMNTerminator
01-14-2006, 03:53 PM
Solid black probably somewhere around $125-$175 depending on the intracices of the design...
damnhooligan
01-14-2006, 04:14 PM
The price of a tattoo doesn't depend on how large and intricate the design is, but how long it takes the artist to complete it. Plus, certain areas of body are more expensive than others. Expect to pay around $100 to $150 per hour for a respectable artist. Some folks come a little cheaper, but you get what you pay for.
You ought to research a couple reputable shops in your town, and swing by with a potential sketch. Get an estimate in person, and maybe have a chat or two with whomever's manning the front desk.
Brodie

The price of a tattoo doesn't depend on how large and intricate the design is, but how long it takes the artist to complete it.
Well thats essentially what I meant...a larger tattoo, and more intricate tattoo with lots of small detailing and all, will generally take longer to do, thus cost more...most respectable artists around here (Miami Beach, FL) usu charge around $100 or so an hour, with some more sketchy artists willing to do it for $75 down to $50 an hour...i personally think you have to be an idiot to go to artist like that...
And its true, the part of your body you want to get it on has some effect on pricing (and pain) as well...your arms and legs aren't too bad but areas like the ribs, face, etc. will usu run you a bit more...
Jo Dawn
01-14-2006, 09:19 PM
I'm a tad confused... and worried.
Ya'll say that you get what you pay for... but all the shops around here (which many people have gone to, and loved) are cheaper than what y'all say is a good price. Is it just the area I live in is cheaper? Or are they all crappy parlors? I mean, I know a gal who does the booking for one, so she knows how clean they are and all that, and she says it's great...
TMNTerminator
01-14-2006, 11:25 PM
IMO, if you have a parlor that comes highly recommended and you personally know (and have seen) the work the artists at that parlor have done then I say go for it. And it is true that the area can affect the price, like many consumer goods. So yea, if its cheaper, and they offer quality, sanitary service at the lower price then you got a pretty good deal...

Jd? If the parlor itself is clean as you like-- start checking their artist's portfolios. Everyone's got something they just draw BETTER than anyone else. And there's no sense in getting the artist who's queen of Dice and anchors to do your Ivy--especially if there's a water/foliage artist in residence.
My tat's an original--my artist worked with me to modify the flash (the drawing it's based on) and make the design more OPEN incase i wanted to add to the thing later. (Rather than having 3 tattoos lumped together, leaving the design so it can be added to to make it all look like one piece.) I'd caution against belly tatoos for girls-- yes we all age and sag EVERYWHERE-- BUT you can still be young and have your tatoo horribly stretched and irregular should you ever become pregnant. (That and you've gotta be STILL for a good tat, and holding your tummy perfectly flat will be more of a challenge than you'll want for several hours.)
Brodie? My tat's about the size you were talking about--it ran me $500. With color.
in case you wanted to see it. (http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL144/1002116/1903913/41021818.jpg) It's LOW on my lower back, which is why the image is cropped... there's actually a few more sakura blossoms and loose petals floating on the down below the edge of that picture. I apologize about the lightness and the slight blur--it's hard to take a picture of your own back.

My first tattoo, which I hope to get before I'm 18, will be, I don't know, the size of my thumb nail. Yeah, that small. My mom HATES tattoos and that would be MUCH easier to persuade her to let me get, and much easier to hide (or have it not be noticed at all) for jobs and etc.
I'm stuck between three symbols of such a size, though:
1 - 1UP Mushroom
2 - Triforce
3 - the Umbrella logo
I want it either on my hand, clavicle, or behind my ear.

I got a TMNT-related tattoo yesterday, so I figured here's as good a place as any to show it off! Getting into the Turtles as a child basically helped set me on my "path," as it were - the cartoon and movies piqued an interest in animation and filmmaking, and the old Archie series got me into comics, all of which are major, lifelong interests and passions for me (I'm basically an amateur filmmaker/writer/cartoonist).
I knew I wanted to get a couple tattoos, and I wanted to honour that major impact on my life. However, I didn't want to get a basic Turtle head or anything, but something that was more of a symbol with a nice design to it. I've always liked the look of the turtle shield from "The Halls of Lost Legends" (issue #43, one of my all-time favourite TMNT stories), so I ultimately decided on that, on my right shoulder blade.

Every time I'm ready to get a tattoo, I always back out. Not because I'm afraid of it, but because I have second thoughts about what I'm planning to get. I don't want to just get random **** I won't care about 10 years down the road, and I don't want to be some kind of walking advertisement, either. I was going to get a tattoo of the letters "MBC" which is an abbreviation of what my very close group of friends was called, but as that group has entirely fallen apart in the last year and a half, and my feelings towards all of the people it once represented has changed entirely, I feel like getting it would be completely pointless.
I keep toying with the idea of getting something game-related, but having it not represent one series, company, or time period is next to impossible. I really think getting things like your favourite band, or a logo of some kind is super lame. I just always have the feeling that I'll never be entirely satisfied with anything I end up getting.

Every time I'm ready to get a tattoo, I always back out. Not because I'm afraid of it, but because I have second thoughts about what I'm planning to get.
Good for you for taking the time to really consider what you want. I believe tattoos should have meaning to the wearer. My brother recently got one of a skull with an eye in the empty cranial area. While it is very cool-looking, I asked him what was the meaning? Why is it special? He couldn't answer. Now he's stuck with this tat he got at 19, possibly on a whim, forever.
My first tat is a cross made out of roses. Might sound like any old flash you'd see on the walls of your local tattoo parlor, but the artist designed it for me based on my idea & sketchs. I'm sure there's others similar to mine out there, but regardless, I consider it very special & meaningful to me. Um, pic should be attached to this post.

Edit: They are done by others by ink/pen so they are not those phony ones that you just stick on...

Those birdies are darling. The coloring looks really nice, and heart on its tail is adorable!
Well, this took a lot of time and thought, and I decided against the Ninja Turtle. I decided that something small and meaningful was better.

Of course! Stick em up!
And cheers for the compliments. The colours in the swallows will fade a bit when they start to scab over, but should still stay pretty bright. I'm pretty chuffed with them.
I'm already planning my next one(s) - i've got a few different designs in mind. Just gotta narrow them down and choose where to place them. Oh, and save up the cash for em!

Wow, that koi is lovely! And is very similar to what I have in mind for a future tatt. Which is a golden carp, in bluey green water, with some of they flowers in pink floating in it. Similar to your one there, but alot bigger, it will take up my arm from the elbow to the wrist.

With art like that, and a bit more practice, I could easily see you becoming a tattoo artist!
I can't wait to see mine either, but its just an idea at the moment - I gotta save up money. Hopefully be late this year, into next year before I get it started...

Michael Dooney did a commission of Leonardo for me at San Diego Comic Con 2009, and I liked it so much I got a tattoo of it on my right upper arm. :tgrin:
I'm excited to get tattoos of the other three Turtles when money permits.
This one cost between $200-300 and took about 3-4 hours, I quite enjoyed the whole process and was interested in seeing how it was done as much as possible, but I'm strange.

I think my favourite thing about this one is, its a great mix between the toon and the comics. Its awesome.
And soliloquy, that's great. And yep, I also enjoy watching the tattooist at work. Its better than staring at a wall, anyway.

But if it's just a qualm, what's the point? Just my opinion.

Heh, thanks guys. Whilst I do have personal reasons for getting tattooed what I have tattooed, what is it to you if I did get a design just for the sake of getting that design? It ain't doing you any harm. Not every tattoo has to be unique, what's wrong with wanting to get a 'classic'? You make it out that everyone has got a koi fish, when out of my group of friends, family and workmates, colleagues, etc, I can't think any who has a koi tattooed (except from me...)

I don't see what the big deal is, guys. People get tattoos for various reasons, but certain tattoos mean something to the ones who want to get them. It shouldn't matter what type they get. If it has meaning, it's cool.
