IDW Publishing has acquired the Star Trek comic book license, and Star Trek manga will arrive in time for the franchise's 40th birthday this fall.

Comic Book Resources reported on the latest development in Trek illustrated stories, noting that the company is "boldly going where Marvel, DC, Gold Key, Checker, Malibu, Wildstorm, Titan and TV Comic have gone before."

The company's official web site lists its other publications, which include the Transformers, the CSI and 24 franchises, Fallen Angel and Silent Hill - the latter soon to be a movie starring Borg Queen Alice Krige.

Meanwhile, further news has surfaced on the Star Trek manga project at ICv2, which reports that Tokyopop will publish its first volume - an anthology of five stories set during the original series - in September to coincide with Star Trek's 40th anniversary.

The 192-page volume is expected to sell for $9.99 and be appropriate for teens and adults. Among the creative talent involved are Chris Dows, Gregory Johnson, Jeon-Mo Yang, Jim Alexander, Joshua Ortega, Michael Shelfer, Mike Barr and Rob Tokar.

Interesting. I wonder what it will look like? I picked up the Star Trek: Voyager comic a few times when it was first coming out. It had (I thought) a great look to it which was a good match for the energy of the show at that time.

But apparently they got complaints that it didn't "look enough like the show" ... so the look was scrapped for a plainer one. They weren't the most exciting books in the first place, so I thought that was pretty unfortunate.

Cinescape Comics has aquired the cover art for the first issue of the ST Manga, which arrives in Stores in September.

The first issue is an anthology of 5 stories, one of which features the origin of a TNG villian. Im thinking it's Q but it could be the Borg for all we know.
