View Full Version : References in TMNT 2007
The New TMNT Movie board was beginning to become a ghost town so I'm here to bring everyone back into it. We haven't received any new information (like VA's) yet so I thought we'd do this. As we know, the film is a continuation of the previous films so what I want to know is what references, homages, throwbacks, etc. will they make in the new film. They've stated that they'll have little hints for the fans of the films, comics and toons. Let's just have some fun and speculate on what they could be. Here is my list of possible things. More will follow hopefully.
1. I'd like to see the first issue of the comic make an appearance. It'd have to be real subtle like in the background or something. Something that doesn't appear as such upon first glance.
2. Kevin Munroe mentioned taking scenes from the first film and making them into CGI and looking at how the voices now matched the movements. I'd like to see flashbacks in that format. Hopefully we can get other scenes as 'extras' on the DVD.
That's all I have for now. I'll think of more. In the meantime, think up some more and enjoy.

It'd certainly be interesting to see some classic moments recreated in this format.

I would really love it if, at the end, the TMNT would mirror their scene at the end of E&L TMNT 1.
I think I heard before that the newspaper/flyer that blew over the manhole in the teaser trailer was supposed to be issue #1. But, don't quote me on that.

I saw on the official site a toy of a van that Mike is supposed drive around in when he does kids birthdays. It says Cowabunga Carl on the side and the colors make it kind of resemble the Turtlevan.
Munroe said they would reference the third film, and the best way I could think of is one of the turtles, most likely Mike digging in a pile of stuff in the lair. He thows around various items. One of which should be the scepter.

I'd like to see or hear a reference that includes the creators last names as part of a location because would be a good homage to when one of the street punks said "Check out East Warehouse on Lairdman Island" to Chief Sterns towards the end of the (first) movie.

i want one of the fight moves from the first movie to be re created in this one, maybe the nunchuck challenge between mike and the foot soldier
You think it would be too much to ask for the entire first film to be recreated in CGI (I mean, think about it: you've done a few scenes...that's just tempting) and released with the new film on DVD kind of like a special feature. Once again, it's just a thought. It's not like that's going to happen. And yes, the 'battle' between the Mikey and the foot soldier would be classic if referenced. I'm pretty sure they'll reference Eastman and Laird. That's kind of like a given. If not vocally then as grafitti or something. I think a lot of the references will be real subtle, meaning we'll really have to look out for them. And that will require multiple viewings  . This thread is shaping up well. Keep it up.

yea, i agree, the nunchuck challenge would be pretty cool.
A thought just hit me. I thought it would be cool since Mikey is 'Cowabunga Carl', it'd be fun to see him driving along and listening to the radio and we hear snippets of "T-U-R-T-L-E Power" or "Ninja Rap". It'd be one of those things you either hear or miss. But if used, it'd bring a smile to my face. And yes, I realize Kevin Munroe said no Vanilla Ice but he's not really making an appearance.

A less obvious song would be better, I think. Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy" from TMNT III would be great. :)

Good thinking with the songs in the Van. And wow, that would be really cool to see the original movie done over in Cgi...I wish:-?

Mike: Come on Don you gotta make us something that can fly.
Don: And what would you have me make? A blimp.
Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy" from TMNT III would be great. :)
Random thoughts about that song: I believe I heard it on that Listerine commercial first. Thinking it was a jingle (before I knew that jingles require lyrics), I was thrilled when it showed up on the soundtrack of TMNT III. After seeing the movie, I no longer cared though. But, just recently, I got the CD from eBay. Listening to the complete track, I have to say that I was disappointed. The chorus, to which the only lyric was a Tarzan yell, was the only exciting part of the song (and the only part that reminds me of the days when Listerine bottles used to swing through the jungle on vines :goof: ).
Back on-topic: Since this is supposed to be a family movie, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they have a stereo in the movie playing a song that mentions the turtles... Perhaps one of the two tracks from the animé to poke fun at the influence of animé on American culture today (but, only hardcore fans or Japanese-speakers will know that they are talking about the TMNT). That's awfully in-joke-ish, but it wouldn't detract from the yuppies'-- er, newbies' enjoyment of the movie (Whew! That was a close one. :sweatdro: :goof: ).
Slash, I love your reference. It's great. Little moments like that is what'll make the film great. Haha, the blimp. Keep them coming, these are great. The more I think about it, the references will probably be more dialouge related. I'm trying to think of some more.

I want Mikey to come up with rediculous pizza toppings for his catering service. Also, I want him to say "Cowabunga" relentlessly until it becomes cool again! (j/k!)
But really, maybe a classic NES videogame playing on a grainy TV or something obscure like that. Maybe the beat to "ninja rap" playing on some guy's headphones or something brief but distinguishable.
Another song that would be good is ZZ Top's "Can't Stop Rockin'". Maybe some sandwich place, "Combat Cold Cuts" or a "Ninja Pizzaria" would be pretty sweet. Maybe some classic cars that vaguely resembles the Nutrino's vehicles. Maybe some 8-bit videogame sounding classic TMNT cartoon theme song... Lots of stuff would be great!

Thanks man, here is some others I thought of.
1)Mike: Turtle Power!
Raph: That was lame.
Mike: Hey it's a lot better than it's ninja time.
2)Mike: I had this weird dream that there was a girl turtle with us. Then the dream became a nightmare.

It'd be cool if Mike was forced to defend himself with a grappling line at some point. Or Don was working on an exo skeleton that looked like his cyborg body parts from the image series.

Raph: Aww man. Not again.
Foot Ninja: What are you going to do now freak!
(Raph smirks and draws out his sais.)
Raph: I'll tell ya this. I aint droppin my sais this time.
(Raph leaps at the foot.)
I love it Slash. It's so tongue-in-cheek with Raph just pissing off the Foot just like in TMNT I & II. I'm trying to get some dialouge related references but I'm not fast like you. I think I'll watch the films again to get a feel of them. Thanks for your ideas. I hope they choose that one or a variation of it.

Again thanks. And Now....
1)
Splinter: Let us meditate.
(Splinter closes his eyes. Don and Mike sneak over to the radio.)
Splinter: Don't even think about.
2)
Raph: Splinter is way to strict!
Mike: I dunno, remmeber when he made us do backflips for anything we'd do wrong.
3)
Mike: Did you ever wish there were other mutants like us?
Raph: What do you mean?
Mike: You know, wouldn't it be cool if there was like a scateboarding gecko who lived next door.
Raph: You've been watching to many cartoons.

Mike: A shell cell?
Don:....
Mike: Okay fine, what would you call it.
Don: A walkie talkie.
Mike: You have no imagination bro.
2)
Raph: I SAID SHUT UP!!
Mike: I always thought he was just cool but rude, but he really has a bad atitude.
I mentioned in one of the newer threads that since Kevin Smith is playing a chef, it would be cool if he had a pizza delivery boy named Keno. Also I was wondering, does Splinter in this new movie ever say, "I made funny"? That would be so cool to hear Mako/Splinter say that.
If they hadn't thought of it already, this would have been great for the blooper reel:
SPLINTER: (taking a fighting stance) "It is now time to meet your Mako"

Raph: Aw, shut up Mikey, the old show had better characters, it was funnier, and it even had the better theme song.
Mikey: No way, the new show has better animation, deeper storylines, and even the toys are better.
Leo: What are you two arguing about?
Mikey: Raph's trying to convince me the old show is better than the new one.
Raph: Because it is!
Leo: What old show?
Mikey: Biker Mice from Mars.
Leo:.....this is pointless
Don: Yeah, when are people gonna realize they're both good shows.

A scene taking place at Lairdman Island would be a fun in-continuity reference.
Also, might be neat if Mikey hummed the '80s toon theme. Bonus points if as a running joke, he's heard humming a different theme each time. First the '80s toon theme, then the movie theme, then the Red Sky episodes' theme, and the 2K3 tune ... though the "Next Mutation" theme would be seriously pushing it.
I doubt there's any way the immortal, "Ninja-kick the damn rabbit" would ever be incorporated, but I can dream. :)

Maybe after the scene in the trailer?

Mike: Just this one. AHHH!
Raph: Just Ninja-kick the damn monster!
ThemanthatwouldbeRaphael I love the Nobody reference! That would be so cool if they put it in the movie!
I'd love it if Splinter "made a funny" as well.
I'd like it if Leo mentioned he trained with the Ancient One during his year away.
There are just so many things they could do with this film to pay tribute to what's come before.

Nah, it sounds like a reasonable request.
Here's my list:
1. The turtles would gather around to watch TV. What are they watching? The original TMNT cartoon of course! That would be so weird and so wrong.
2. Since this movie's going to have monsters, they should battle a walking Rhino and Warthog monster!!!
3. The Turtles do battle with a topless roller skating nun.

maybe in a scene there could be four japanese guys playing hockey. Casey might be walking with one of the turtles and tells them he taught them to play hockey, but as soon as they start fighting eachother he denies it.
I saw that scene on saturday when i was watching tmnt 3, it was jokes.

As I was reading the books I counted the references to the current toon and comics.

3: Casey saying What the shell
4: Raph talking to Casey about their encounters with Utroms and Triceratons

They did this in Superman Returns. Superman's pose with a car in a photo is very similar to the cover of Action Comics #1.
As far as references already, April is wearing yellow like in the comics. And there's that photo with the TGRI cannister.
