Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

Oh man... This is definatly gonna be all over the news today. Robbie Knievel lives nearby in Sequim, Washington.

My dad used to love him as a kid. It was kind of a bit of a blow to him to hear this.

My best wishes to his family and friends as well.

There's just a sad irony that the dude who jumped the Grand Canyon on a motor bike would wind up leaving this world on a medical problem. Such a shame that a famous stunt man like that didn't even go out with more dignity.

My thoughts to the family.

Poor guy... he was in a couple pretty bad local roofing commercials a year or so ago. And now down for the count because of medical problems. I guess you almost assume people like this are invincible.

The dude was a legend in stunt bike; my bro liked him. Even had a stunt bike toy in his likeness back in the 70s...I remember it!

Pretty intense news. Always strange when someone like that passes away. Reminds me of the Death of Steve Erwin last year, even though there are the definite differences. At least he goes out as a legend.

I remember all his stunts as a child growing up, seeing him do all sorts of things on his motorcycle and crashing all the time. Talk about a survivor!

But I wouldn't necessarily call him a hero. I remember his fall from public esteem in the late 1970's, when he violently attacked a man who wrote an uncomplimentary book about him, and when he punched out another man years after that. Amazing he is still well-remembered nowadays.
