In a surprise move, Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard as Robert Downey Jr's best friend in "Iron Man 2," the sequel to the superhero saga.

In the Marvel Studios summer smash, Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man's future armor-clad hero War Machine. One scene featured Howard looking at a silver suit of armor and saying "Next time," a line that caused great delight for fans.

But there will be no next time for Howard.

Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.

The Rhodes character is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay.

Jon Favreau is returning as director, and Downey is expected back as billionaire industrialist Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts. "Iron Man 2" is scheduled for release on May 7, 2010;

Cheadle most recently starred in "Traitor," a thriller on which he was also a producer. He will next be seen in DreamWorks' "Hotel for Dogs."

Hmm...Don Cheadle's cool, but recasts aren't. And what's up with Robert Downey and Gwenyth Paltrow as "expected"? I thought they signed on, already.

I agree, I like Cheadle, but he's replacing an actor who is a great Rhodie.

I haven't seen the first Iron Man, but I do understand why Cheadle was cast. He's hot right now... he wasn't in anything for a long time, then BAM! Sam Jackson the Second!

I think Cheadle is a much better actor, but I don't like recasts. Especially if you consider that Howard was far from bad.

I like Cheadle, but this seems like a dumb move on their part. Unless Howard was expecting a lot of money, they should have tried to keep him.

This is like if they replaced James Franco with Leo Dicaprio inbetween Spiderman 1 and 2.

I think it's a trade up.

This sucks, recasts are lame and I thought Howard had great chemistry with Downey Jr. and that their friendship was very believable. I can't see Cheadle in the role at all either, but I hope it turns out alright.

I think James Franco was one of the few great actors in the SM movies.

At least they didn't decide to paint Robert Downey Jr. black like in Tropic Thunder and have him play both roles.:lol:

Not sure how I feel about this. I love Cheadle and hate Howard, but I also hate re-casts. :ohwell:

While out doing the press rounds for his new movie 'Soul Men', Samuel L. Jackson told reporters that he'll have an expanded role as Nick Fury in the upcoming 'Iron Man 2' movie.

IESB reports that Jackson said he spoke to director Jon Favreau at the recent Scream Awards. The director promised that the actor would have a "more prominent" appearance in the sequel.

Fans recall Jackson's famous post-credit walk-on in the original movie, where he meets with Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark to propose the "Avengers initiative."

Jackson also said he's looking forward to working with Don Cheadle.

That was to be expected, really. Wonder how many people actually saw the post-credits scene though.

Not quite the word I would use to describe it, but it was neat.

It was in the sense that it's all set up for what's going to happen. I hope we get to see the Helicarrier.

Im hoping that the Helicarrier's look cool on the big screen as they do in the eps of Dr. Who.

This be the Valiant. The Unit Helicarrier in Doctor Who. Unit/Shield...same fraking thing really.. :P

Glad to hear they will be expanding upon that more, Im really excited to see where they take the second one, but I hope they fix the tiny little things that bugged me (like a rushed ending)

There's an article (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20236884,00.html) up that could explain why Terrence Howard was recast.

Latino Review passed along rumors that Tim Robbins is going to play Howard Stark, father of Tony, in Iron Man 2, in an important flashback sequence that is going to set up the Avengers and Captain America films; also, that Hawkeye and Black Widow are definitely in the sequel in non-cameo roles.

http://chud.com/articles/articles/17783/1/CONFIRMED-ROCKWELL-WIELDS-A-HAMMER-AGAINST-IRON-MAN/Page1.html

Sam Rockwell has been confirmed as playing billionaire industrialist Justin Hammer. Im not too familiar with Iron Man villians (never been a big fan. Course I never even heard of Iron Man till like maybe 5 years ago) but it seems that Mr. Hammer is a major rival of Tony who often attempts to steal the Iron Man armour.
