On freecomicbookday.com Diamond Comics has a list of the first comics published by just about every publisher. For Mirage Studios, they say that Gobbledeygook was the first. But... everyone knows that TMNT #1 was their first, right?. I even remember "arguing" with people at the UM forums about this and losing. Somebody mention the different art styles and I had to agree.
Well, the other day in either "Turtle Tracks" or and interview somewhere, Peter said the the turtles first appeared in TMNT #1, with the exception of an ad in Gobbledeygook. My guess is that the Gobbledeygook we all know is actually a second issue.
I feel so special.

I'm not either, it's really nothing more than a guess.

Sounds interesting... I have always tought that TMNT is Mirage's first book... They even loaned money to get it printed... But if it's an ad, that would explain it.

Well... I have a book on the TMNT, and they pictures of the Gobbledeygook comics, even though they aren't TMNT. And I believe Fugitoid made his first appearance in Gobbledeygook.

So was it released before TMNT?

A true 1st printing of tmnt #1 has the gooky ad on the back cover. (So the turtle came before the egg!)

here's the facts as i know them:
-there are 2 gobbledygooks. the first one is the first appearance ever of TMNT - it just contains an ad for them. its pretty expensive. came out in 1984
-the other one has a few short stories involing the TMNT, plus alot of other random shorts. came out in 1986
-TMNT #1 was published in 1984
all were published by mirage studios.
with the first gobbledygook having the first tmnt appearance, it musta been the first thing they've made, but the TMNT comic also must've been in development pretty far for them to advertise it at that point (ive never seen the ad myself). if the back of the tmnt comic has an ad for gobbledygook, id say thats just some more self-promotion to try to get their other comic bought some hehe.
well, thats my thoughts!

Everyone is a bit right on this one, you're just overlooking some key words.
Gobbledeygook was the first publication from Mirage Studios. And there were two of these early issues. (I have pictures of them somewhere, and I think you can see that at least one of them is dated '83. I'll see if I can find the pictures.) However, these are more like fanzines. They weren't printed at a printer and marketed like TMNT #1, so they didn't need any help with money.
And TMNT #1 was the first appearance of the Turtles.

im gonna have to disagree with you on that one point rose, ive read many places that gobblyedgook is indeed the first appereance of the turtles (the one with the ad), hence its high value (overstreet, wizard).

I've read that, too, and have been back and forth on that issue. But I also recall reading Peter say somewhere that TMNT #1 was the first appearance. I'd have to see the book for myself to be certain.
