Sony Pictures Consumer Products and Mattel, Inc. announced today the development of a new collectible line of toys based on the world’s favorite poltergeist fighting team, the Ghostbusters, including an extensive cast of ghosts and ghostbusters – celebrating the 25th anniversary of the frightfully funny classic film “Ghostbusters.”

Mattel’s “Ghostbusters” collectible line debuts with 12-inch figures in June 2009, and will be available exclusively at MattyCollector.com. Each figure will feature window box packaging and include authentic Ghostbuster equipment unique to each character. For the first time, Mattel’s line will include talent likeness of Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman and Winston Zeddemore. Select prototype figures will be on display February 6-8 at New York Comic Con and February 15 at Mattel’s New York Toy Fair Collector Preview Night (by invitation only).

”We have assembled a quality group of licensing partners to support and celebrate the anniversary for one of Columbia Pictures' most cherished properties. Mattel’s line-up of collector toys is the perfect complement to what will be a great selection of 25th anniversary product,” said Juli Boylan, Senior Vice President, Sony Pictures Consumer Products Worldwide.

“Ghostbusters” collectors can also look forward to 6-inch figures, with one debuting at San Diego Comic Con in July 2009. Sculpted by Four Horsemen Studios, the team currently working on Mattel’s popular DC Universe™ Classics and Masters of the Universe® Classics collectible lines, the 6-inch line will come complete with authentic “Ghostbusters” equipment and ghost.

“There haven’t been many comedic blockbusters over the past quarter century as memorable and loved as ‘Ghostbusters,’” said Tim Kilpin, GM for Boys, Girls & Games, Mattel, Inc. “We are honored to participate in the celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary by creating the most extensive line of ‘Ghostbusters’ collectibles ever.”

Mattel will also create characters and ghosts from the classic animated series, “The Real Ghostbusters,” to go along with the classic “Ghostbusters” film.

This is good news. I see they cleared up the likeness issue that NECA struggled with years ago. I don't know, but the news would really be something if they decided to make their cartoon likenesses as well. I always wanted serious cartoon sculpts that didn't turn into Tex Avery when a button is pressed on the back.

All I can say though, I kinda wish Hasbro got it... only for a Ghostbusters Mr. Potatohead and "Ghostbusting Heroes" mini-figure 2 packs.

Only available online though, like with the MOTU Classics. That's a shame.

I hope to see some pics soon.

Okay, I've put off the He-Man exclusives, but I don't think I can say no to a set of 12" Ghostbusters sculpted by the Four Horsemen. I've been trying to stay away from buying new toys since they take up so much room and income but they're makin' it real hard for me.

C'MON! A COLLECTOR QUALITY LINE OF 6" FIGS BASED ON THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS TOON?

That's not just a maybe for me, that's a "buy every single one they make" sort of situation.

I still have that big Stay-Puft from a few years back, in the package and everything... Always wanted more Ghostbusters stuff, but I'll never afford it all...

Meh, lost interest as soon as I noticed it's a Matty exclusive. I'm still pissed that I couldn't get Skeletor from the MotUC line.

Diamond Select Toys has announced the production of Minimates based on the classic cult comedy. The first set will feature Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Louis Tully as Gozer’s dog, & the possessed Dana Barrett.

I'm kinda excited to see how all these turn out, specifically the Mattel stuff. Updated Real Ghostbusters toy's? YES!

My first thought: Holy SH*T! I have got to have those suckers.

Where the f*** is Winston?

That was my second thought.

Geez, that video game has really got the ball rolling hasn't it.

Winston will always be the last Ghostbuster to get any spotlight. It's sickening.

Where the f*** is Winston?

If they are doing this like they are with MOTUC then there will only be one figure available per month. And those will be the first two months, possible 3 if slimer is being sold on his own.

The 6 inch ones arent exclusive though...Right?

I hope not, but they probably will be.

I men, I'd love to see these in store a million times more than Minimates.

The idea I got is yeah, the 6 inch ones are exclusive to Matty Collector's website.

Website exclusive figures just bug me b/c I don't have a credit card and can barely even go online as it is, let alone buy things. But I guess as long as they're available somehow...

The thing that really bothers me is they are extremely low quantity. Skeletor sold out in 12 days. Mostly because people were buying up to 10 of him (Which in a line like this really shouldn't be allowed.) Hopefully with Ghostbusters they'll produce higher quantities to avoid this from happening.

Or limit the number of figures you can buy at one address.
