View Full Version : Sarah's Customs

I havent made any TMNT customs in a few years, and most of the ones that I did back then got packed away in the garage when we moved here. anyway, I recently got some of the parts that I needed so I decided to try some new customs. I intend to do some more TMNT customs when I can get the time to work on them.

all questions, comments, and criticisms are welcome. :)

Prototype Shogun Shredder - initially Playmates intended to release Shogun Shredder using the armour from Super Shredder but done in chrome. however, as we all know that didn't happen. the only place I've ever seen the prototype Shogun Shredder was on the back of the package on the file card. (see below) and since Playmates didn't release it, I thought that id make my own.

prototype from the file card.

my custom with the original.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/100_0330.jpg

as you can see it's pretty bulky, and the extra armour restricts the movement. at first I wasnt sure if I should have left certain parts of the armour unpainted like the prototype, but since all the armour on the regular Shoguns were painted, I decided that id do the same. the centre piece of armour came from a Norinaga, which was the original base for Shogun Shredder. the rest of the armour came from Super Shredder.

Devil Shredder - this version of Shredder was from the Japanese episodes. though technically speaking, he was only called Devil Shredder when he was in his demon form, not in his human form. I didn't know which paint scheme I was going to use cause I had 3 sources to choose from... his look based on the actual toy that was released, the show, and the production art. so I just used bits from all 3.

with the original Supermutants Shredder.

here he is with the original Devil Shredder and Dark Devil Shredder.

the cape is from a WildC.A.T.s Helspont. the best part is that it's already red and purple so I didn't have to paint it. and Wes, I just want to say that I love your site, and the review that you did on the TMNT anime. :)

Ooh, I hadn't even realized that it was red and purple! Any chance of any angled/behind the back photos to show that detail off? :)

Coming from someone who so perfectly rendered the anime Shredder in custom figure form, that means a lot! :D

Excellent. I had in mind to do a custom like that once I got a hold of an extra April figure. Although my plan is to use Ninja Newscaster's head instead. What did you use for the arms?

Yeah, what arms did you use? They look familiar. That's a great custom!

Sarah
02-22-2009, 11:58 PM
I used a April II body and a regular April head. the arms are from a ST:TNG Troi.

first I had to split the body of April II and remove the head and arms, then I sanded down the belt and added the parts from the other April and Troi. the worst thing about it was the yellow paint. it took a few coats to cover it and then all the layers hid some of the detail in the sculpt.

here she is with the other 2 April figs that I used to make it.

I don't get alot of time to work on customs cause of my job, but when I heard about the custom contest I thought it would be fun to enter so I put aside some time for my entry. and since this is the first time Im doing a contest I took some pics to show how much I had to change the figure.

Irma - I always wondered what type of drugs the guys at playmates were doing when they came up with the design for the toon Irma. that thing was hideous to say the least. anyway, I wasnt pleased with it so I tried to make her look a little more like her appearance on the show.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/100_0218-2-1-1.jpg

first I had to strip the paint, then sand down the vest, the sweater tied around her waist, and the straps on her sandals. but when I was sanding down the backpack I noticed that it was hollow so it left a big hole in her back. so I had to fill it in. I also filled in the front of her shoes to make them look more like slippers. after I painted it there was only one thing that bugged me... her glasses. so I made her a new square pair. here she is -

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/100_0598.jpg

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/100_0601.jpg

human Rocksteady and Bebop - Ive wanted to make these 2 for a while. they just didn't come out the way I thought they would. and for some reason Bebops skin tone is slightly darker in the pics. oh well, I guess they'll have to do.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/100_0687.jpg

Super Shredder - while I was looking for my other Shredders I came across one of my old customs that I made about 5 years ago. sadly the paint is chipping and the cape is a bit worn from being packed away for so long. so I plan to retouch it and replace the cape with a plastic one. when I made this I didn't have any good pics to work from so I didn't notice until recently that he's actually supposed to have some extra blades on his shoulders, so I plan to add them.

thanks! I don't mind making one for you, but I don't have the time to do it right now. I have all the parts readily available, but if I make a new one I plan to use a new base with better muscle definition so that he looks more like he did in the film. if you're still interested, and you can wait a while for it, then send me a PM and we can work something out.

that super shredder definitely takes the cake here, ive also been plannin to make a super shredder using a wrestler body, since technically he is in the movie (kevin nash). and that toon burne body is great base for several characters ive been planning to use it as a "Smash" (leader of crooked ninja turtle gang). great work on all of these.

I was digging through the garage and I came across most of my old TMNT customs so here they are. the only ones I didn't find yet were the Punk Frogs and Rat King, so when I find them i'll post pics. these have been packed away for a while so the paint is chipping and cracked on a few of them even though I kept them in zip bags. please keep in mind that I made them about 5 or 6 years ago, and that was long before I had DVD's or screencaps to work from, and if I made them now they would turn out alot differently. anyway, I should have some new customs soon.

Toon Shredder - when I made this I was pleased with it, but now when I look at it something seems wrong, so Ive already started working on a new one.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/f4184958-1-1.jpg

The Neutrinos - I repainted these guys from head to toe except for Kala's bracelets and boots cause they were pretty close to the right colours. her and Dask are just repaints but for Zak I had to sand down alot of the details to make him look a bit better.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/c6da4322-1.jpg

Rhinoman and Mighty Hog - I should have used a lighter shade when I painted Bebop's skin but at the time I couldnt find the right colour, so I just painted his arms the same colour as his head.

These are really cool, Sarah -- and I demand recipes for the less obvious ones! I've guessed that Leatherhead uses Rocksteady's body as a base (is that right?), but the others that aren't repaints remain mysteries to me. What did you use for your toon Shredder? Usagi's body? Baxter's body? Inquiring minds want to know!

And I really like the idea of using the old Shredder's shin armor for the forearm armor... I wish I'd thought of that. That Shredder is much easier to come by than Supers. :/

I don't have many criticisms, except I would have used the belts that the Movie Star Turtles came with (although I do like how you did the bandannas and pads). I also wouldn't have used that bright of Green for them, if it weren't for that I think they'd be much more life-like.

Great stuff though!!! Seriously!!!

yeah, the Leatherhead is one of my fav ones out of the pile, the only thing that I would have done differently is use a brighter green for him, but at the time it was the only shade I had.

I saw a custom OT Leatherhead made with a NT body before and I thought it came out great. I think tmntfan617 made it but Im not sure though.

I can tell ya this much, usagi is movie 3 kenshin. Baxters legs at the least are from an actual ninja turtle, & I THINK shredder is somethin from toxic avenger but I'm likely mistaken.

well, you're almost right about Kenshin, the arms and legs are his, but the head, body and feet are from Usagi. and the only turtle parts on Baxter are his feet.

Thanks Wespinator. :) to be honest, it's been so long since I made these that I forgot some of the parts that I used. but i'll try...

Leatherhead - I used Bebop's body, Rocksteady's arms, and of course, Leatherhead's head and tail. I forgot what I used for the hands and legs.

toon Shredder - the body was from a Slice and Dice Shredder, the legs and helmet are from the Mutations Road Ready Shredder. and the arms are from some unknown figure that I got in a pile of parts.

Usagi - read above.

Baxter - the head, arms, and wings are from Baxter, the feet are from a turtle, and the body was another unknown figure that I used cause he already had a bow tie.

Still waiting for your "Tri-Sarah-ton."

maybe one day, but for now that project has been scrapped.

I don't have many criticisms, except I would have used the belts that the Movie Star Turtles came with (although I do like how you did the bandannas and pads).

well, I always thought the belts they came with were a bit bulky. besides, when I got these they were missing the belts and bandanas which is why I used them for customs.

I also wouldn't have used that bright of Green for them, if it weren't for that I think they'd be much more life-like.

actually, the green is alot darker than it appears in the pic. the flash from the camera made them, and the belts look lighter than they really are.

I still want to see someone do a set of "Coming out of their Shells" Turtles using the Movie Star figures.

hmmmm... now theres a interesting idea. right now I only have 2 extra beat up movie turtles, but if I get a few more then that's something that I wouldnt mind doing.

some new customs. I have alot more planned, so hopefully I get the time to do them soon.

Mini Mutants Super Shredder - when The Ninjinister made his custom mini Shredder I thought it was so awesome that I knew I wanted to make my own so here it is. I also painted a mini Shredder to look more like the original Super Shredder cause I always thought he should have been released in the right colours.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/0a7b8d61-1.jpg

NT April - I always hated the way she looked with her Krusty the Klown pants and action pose, so I gave her new legs and repositioned her arms. I wanted to paint her eyes so she would be looking forward, but I just cant paint details that small.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/014-2-2.jpg

Terminator Donny - this was a fun and easy custom and it only took about 30 mins to do it. I used a Punker Don body and the limbs from a beat up Metalhead. I drilled a hole in Donny's chest and added the metal guts, then I added the eye to it, and painted him.

Terminator Don might be the greatest thing I've ever seen. Please tell me in detail how you did it or sell it to me. My life won't be complete. Now you need to make Rambo Raph, Lethal Weapon Leo, and Robo Michelangelo (Robocop).

Spiffy-a-dee-doo-dah! Magnificent work there, as always. Ye've reminded me that I need to touch up my own MMSS.

I too, have major trouble with eye painting. I can never get the coronas in so it looks weird with all white and just a dot.

I think you mean "cornea," Nin...

Thanks guys! :)

Did you use Casey's legs for April and repaint them?

no, the legs are from another unknown junker. the fig was already missing the head, which is probably why I don't know what it is.

I too, have major trouble with eye painting. I can never get the coronas in so it looks weird with all white and just a dot.

yeah, that's always the hardest part of a custom for me. the other day I was working on a new Shredder custom and I tried to paint his eyes but I kept messing up. I had to paint/repaint the same spot 6 times before I got tired of it and went to work on another custom.

I want to finish customs quickly too. :(

this was probably the fastest custom that Ive ever done. most of them take a minimum of at least a few hrs, and some of them can take up to a few weeks depending on the work involved. I think this was a fast custom cause I didn't plan it, I just grabbed 2 junkers and went to work. :)

Terminator Don might be the greatest thing I've ever seen. Please tell me in detail how you did it or sell it to me.

well, basically I just cut the limbs from both Punker Don and Metalhead, switched them and glued them on. I used a dremel to cut the limbs, but since they're PVC/hard rubber you might be able to use a sharp knife to do it. after I drilled the hole in the chest, I used some engine parts for the guts from a old car model kit. I also got the eye piece from the same kit, it was just a small piece of extra plastic so I had to sand and shape it to look like a eye. I recommend you use a dremel cause it only took 1 min to reshape it. then I added some red paint for the blood around the eye and the hole in the chest, and painted the limbs and body. simple and fun. :)

Now you need to make Rambo Raph, Lethal Weapon Leo, and Robo Michelangelo (Robocop).

HA! I love those ideas. i'll have to put them on my to do list.

edit - I just realized Im not a Foot Soldier anymore. :(

'Tis indeed what I meant. It was late and I was tired (although I did not get to sleep until much, much later than that).

Also - as I am not familiar with most alcohol, I did not make the connection there.

Well, here are my entries for the contest.

Tournament Fighters Cyber Shredder - though I guess he can also be a regular Shredder too. most of the work I had to do was on his head, I had to drill a hole to give him a ball jointed neck so now his head can rotate better. I also did a few small adjustments on his helmet. I wanted to paint his eyes but every time I tried I couldnt get it right so I decided to leave them unpainted. I think it looks better this way cause he looks more sinister. I also had to use different arms for him cause the base fig I used originally had sleeves. I wanted him to have more articulation so he could do more of the moves from the game, but Im happy with the way it came out.

Topless April - this is what happens when you're up at 2 in the morning with nothing to do. this was a fun custom to do but it actually took alot longer than I thought it would, the hardest part was sanding down the sleeves on her arms cause they are made with PVC so it took a while to get it smooth, and I had to resculpt the whole chest area to give her breasts. it's hard to tell from the pic cause she's pale and cause of the flash, but if you look closely you can see the curves. and for those of you that are wondering, yes, she has nipples, I decided to paint them pink cause most natural redheads have pink nipples.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u35/siths/adsdsaddasdasda.jpg

Terror Bear - I based him on the Terror Bears characters from the TMNT RPG. this is basically my own updated version of the characters, so I wrote a small bio to explain the concept behind it...

After the original Terror Bears were severely injured in a explosion, the four bears had to have their personalities transferred into a single, massive new body in order to survive. in addition to retaining their original abilities, this upgraded body gives them increased strength and technological capabilities that as individuals they didn't have before. the only flaw is that the minds of the 4 bears are constantly arguing with eachother for control, but regardless of their differences, they share the same goal. and with their relentless rage and this new advanced body, the Terror Bear is a unstoppable monster that is hellbent on unleashing destruction on the world.

btw, the Mikey is just in the pic to show the size difference.

Nice work, Sarah! They're all pretty wicked -- especially that Terror Bear amalgam! Well, I guess April isn't so much wicked, as, um, soft and inviting? We need an uncensored pic for the 18+ crowd. ;)

I know Wes is going to enter his Cyber Shredder too, so it looks like theres going to be 3 of them in the contest. for some reason theres been alot of interest in that version of the character lately. anyway, Im looking forward to your entry. :)

what are the bases for Shredder and Terrorbear and what have you done for them, any WIP-pictures?

the base I used for the Cyber Shredder was a WWF Edge fig. but the arms are from another wrestler, but I don't know his name. the hands I used are from the 2003 regular Shredder. the left hand already had the claw attached to it, but I had to glue the claw on the other hand. the only work I had to do on the body was split it and switch the arms, the rest of the work was on the head.

the base for the Terror Bear was some McFarlane fig I got in a lot. it was busted and missing parts and the head so I thought it would be good for a custom. I didn't do alot of work on the body other than cut away some unnecessary parts, and paint some of the cyborg pieces, and I tried to darken the *fur* to match the head. I also added some small cyborg parts to him like the eye piece. the head was from one of those zoo bears. the damn thing was made with solid rubber so it took a while to saw through it. I still plan to add some red paint for blood to his claws and mouth to make it look like he just tore someone apart.

I don't usually take any WIP pics cause I don't really need them for myself. besides, Ive posted some before and there wasnt any interest in them so I don't bother to take them anymore.

I think if someone made one from old toon April, that'd be more wanted :D

Im planning to make one soon, I just need to find the right base fig.
