Well, in that case - The Beatles.

Never heard any single song by them, really.

I'm gonna have to say Iron Maiden. They may not be as big over here but in other countries they draw crowds of the 300,000 variety. Who knows maybe some pop singer has matched that but Maiden seems to stay consistently popular with their fan base, which is massive especially in South American countries. Most pop stars are fads. Watching the Flight 666 documentary really puts how big they are in perspective.

True. They love Sweden and we love them.

But I'd still have to say The Beatles

I dunno. Band popularity is usually constrained regionally, but I'd throw a hat in there for U2.

The Rolling Stones. I also love their music, but I do think they're massive.

Greenday is pretty up there as far as consistent staying power.

Oh wait... I think "the biggest" band would be the one with the highest number of members. So some orchestra or choir, I bet.

Sadly, Google doesn't give me the answer right away which choir is the largest one.

Earlier this decade a group of 10,000 bagpipers were assembled in New York. That must be in the running for number of members.

You might be right about that. I just read online they played a show in front of 500,000+ people.

We were having this discussion at work not long ago and I reckoned that the biggest band in the world, still going, playing live, recording, etc, is either the Stones or U2.

That's correct. No matter if you like Metallica or Matz Blahds. The Beatles is not just music, it's the symbol of an entire generation. The rock music revolution begun in the 1950's so they were not the first, but they introduced many things to people (likte the concept album).

How can it not be The Beatles? The fact that they haven't been around since 1970, and we still talk about them to this day should be testament to their success.

If we were talking singers then I'd say its a toss up between Michael Jackson or Elvis.

I would say Elvis Presley. He was around in the 1950's and 60's, during the rock and roll revolution, and became very popular. I see Michael Jackson much as a ssongwriter too. Maybe the question should be "solo artist".

I'd say the Beatles for all-time.

In terms of current bands, U2 or Coldplay.
