View Full Version : Colors? Why green?
Hi All,
Mica here. I'm rather new to the forum here, but I thought I might share a TMNT query I've been pondering.
WHY ARE NINJA TURTLES GREEN??? I mean, I know the ninja turtles are green, but WHY? I mean, normal box turtles aren't. They're scaley and they're brown, and yellow, and orange, and red, not really green. The only kind of turtle that I can think of that is green is a sea turtle, and I'm fairly sure the TMNT aren't sea turtles... gaw, I'm confused

Welcome to the forums! *offers the mango of peace* Enjoy your stay!
Hmmm...well, in all the cartoons Ive seen, TMNT and NON-TMNT, turtles have always geen that greenish color.
Not all turtles tho. Im sure you'll be able to meet Azure Turtle one of these days, he's blue. Im sure you'll get lots of comments from the other forumners...
Yup, we got all sorts of different kinds of folk here and LOTS of interesting things going on, so you'll always find something to do!
Welcome to our forums, Mica! *whispers to Machias* Hide Mikey-clone.
Why are they green....? *blink blink* Because.... Uh.... *passes out*
I so can't think straight this morning. I keep wanting to give a mood green is associated with.

Why helloooo There Mica and welcome to our happy little or should that be big group!
I never really thought about the color of the guys before. Hmmmmm sounds like a question for Peter Laird. *Gets out letter writing equipment*
Anywho, I hope you enjoy your stay!

*glomp* Micaaaaaaa-sama! Hi!
Did you come to witness what wierd wicked discussions we can conjure here when under the influences of various substances and stresses? Hrmm...?
You know.. when I was digging up some reference pics for SkeletonCrew's gender dillemma, I started to wondering why the TMNT were all one solid color too!
Weeell... my logical reasoning is from hyper-evolution. The same excuse I give as to why they also have teeth, dark pupils with eye-whites, sweat glands, regulated body temperature, and opposible thumbs.
The simple answer... because Eastman and Laird thought they look cool like that!

Hi, Mica! Nice to meet you!
Talking of the color... The creators might have thought that such a color as brown would make the heroes look glum and red or purple turtles would seem absurd.
Besides, the green color made it possible to invent some funny situations. In one of the episodes, the Turtles were mistaken for the Punk Frogs; another ep was calles "Green with Jealousy" (isn't that a cool pun?)
P.S. I've been at your site. Good job!

I hope you're not implying that blue turtles are absurd, Deskjet
Greetings, Mica, and welcome to insanit..err, the Technodrome forums!! I believe we already met through email, and I've joined the TMNT mailing list as you recommended. I'm currently lurking about, and I may make my presence known someday. I'm just a little shy, and I like to lurk a little before I join in :goofygri: Anywho, why are the TMNT green? A very good question. Hmm...well, they had no color at the beginning, but someone eventually thought of making them completely green. I guess it's easier to color them one shade of green rather than different shades. Perhaps simplicity was sought after? And turtles seem to be associated with the color green. I dunno why, but I remember seeing all animated turtles (such as the ones in Looney Toons) colored green. Now perhaps you're wondering how I ended up being blue?
*crickets chirp*
Okay, nevermind. 'Tis an unsolved mystery, anyway. Again, welcome to the Technodrome, Mica! Enjoy your stay.
*shakes angry fist at typos*

My gender dilemma? *blank look* Oh that! (For a moment there I thought I was going to have to beat someone for calling me a guy.)
I think they're probably green because thats the color people often associate with turtles. Think of Turtle Wax, or any other logo turtle...prolly all green.

Sorry, Azure, I did not want to hurt your feelings when I spoke of the colors. I was only expressing my opinion. To my mind, your bright blue color is very effective, but it is... how to say... maybe not true to life?

*eyes the Nyquil bottle*
Hey, you gonna finish that...?
Mottled green and brown? hmmm... ok.. well, i guess you're right about the fact that most of the time turtles are colored purple (purple? how did that typo get in there.. weird... I meant green) even prior TMNT. hmmm...
As for the mutagen theory, good idea!! But wasn't the mutagen pink in the cartoon? o well...
As for a blue turtle... blue turtles aren't unheard of. There was one on Wildlife rescue on Animal planet today! Some PUNK painted the poor thing!! :flaming: It wasn't YOU who painted that turtle, was it, AZURE???? Better not be! Well, they can have a purpleturtle email address, they can have a blue turtle, right?
I also learned on that ep that turtles are sensitive on their shells. I always thought they could feel pressure like we feel on our fingernails, but the guy on there said they are much more sensitive on their shells than that! ;D oooohhh fic fodder! It was interesting because the turtle would get all perturbed after they scrubbed on him for a while.
Anyway, moving on, you guys are strange. I don't wanna KNOW about the nyquil, that stuffs got bendyrl in it and it makes me hyper. AND IF I SEE ONE MORE POST ABOUT BARNEY FROM YOU HORSIE-GIRL, I WILL DENY YOU PLUSHIE LEO!!
Speaking of that, there were 4 left when I picked up Lisardo's yesterday, so in case someone hasn't heard, I will provide ya'll with a Leo Plushie from Hot Topic for $6 + $3.50 Priority shipping within US or $5 priority shipping outside the US. I think that 2 out of the 4 left are spoken for, but email me at TURTLEGAL9@AOL.com or talk to me on this board and I'll see what I can do (I think I can talk kimmy out of her Leo now that I have a Mikey to bribe her with, and I have some of the evilly smiling ones from the grabber machine, plus the hot topic crew has promised me that they'll try their best to get more in)

No way, Mica!! You had artwork accepted by NeoPets?? Dang...I have a little cousin who loves NeoPets...heh, so much, in fact, that he convinced me to get my own. I still have that neopet, but I grew bored of spending hours exploring the virtual world and getting nothing. I dunno, my little cousin seems to like it. *shrugs* I think it's cool that you've created a new neopet, though
And what's wrong with blue turtles?? Hmph. There's nothing wrong with being blue.
nah, it was never accepted by neopets unfourtunatly. Kame is a few years old (2 i think?) It was back when Neopets was holding their contests for new neopets (that's where the Shoyru and the Zafara came from, BTW)

HorseTechie
04-04-2002, 04:20 PM
yeah... like would it be like telepathy? Most animals don't use extensive vocal sounds like humans to communicate. And turtles, well they only make vocalizations only when copulating.
But then, would rats and turtles have the same sense of understanding? Or would it be like a Spanish person talking to a Japanese person?
I was thinking more along the lines of "twin speak", a phenomenon among twins and multiples. They sometimes invent their own language between them. I figured the guys would have that type of relationship.
azure turtle
04-04-2002, 06:20 PM
Well, I'm assuming that rats and turtles (normal animals) wouldn't have any kind of understanding or communication. They're from totally different worlds. They're even from different families (rodent and reptile), so ya, I'd assume they'd have a hard time communicating, like a Spanish person trying to communicate to someone who's Japanese.
Keep in mind that a dog or cat can communicate what it wants to a human very well. Maybe not detailed conversation, but getting the point across would not be that hard.
azure turtle
04-04-2002, 09:12 PM
Very true...but that's after the cat or dog has been exposed to humans long enough to learn which actions will get them what they want. I guess if the rat and turtle are together long enough, they may be able to establish communication somehow.
What about a wolf or bear that shows a threat display? I'm sure any person would get the message loud and clear. Some things are universal.
azure turtle
04-04-2002, 09:38 PM
Oh ya, in that case, than yes, animals can communicate to each other to a certain extent. I was thinking more complicated communication, like the rat telling the turtle that he'll never beat the hare.
LOL! I wasn't implying that either. As I said, broad communication is possible between species. Just like most hand gestures and body language are universal. But "talking", I don't think so.
azure turtle

*rolls eyes and clears throat*
What I was trying to get at, is the possiblity that anilmals could be telepathic? If not heavily reliant on the sixth sense and body language (like the "twin speak" theory)
Or with the bear and the wolf, or the cyoyote and the elk, they know what the warning signs from each mean from what their parents and herd/pack mates teach them.
I WANT TO EAT! TURTLES TASTE LIKE SALTY CHICKEN! *laughes maniacally*
As for languges, they are all fluent in Nyar. Nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar nyar. {translation: Nyar is a very complex languge in which the vocalization of the nyar is very important. Most turtles understand it} *speaks in nyar to mikey plushie* 'SPECIALLY PLUSHIE TURTLES UNDERSTAND IT!

*Raph comes in and tackles Kali, snatching his bandanna away*
Awwww.... *pout*
There's a big differnce between voodoo and witchcraft? I dunno.. it's the donnie part of my brain.. one big diff between mike and me.. i tend to be sceptical of everything that doesn't have proven fact behind it. I like to know HOW things work, not just that they do. I believe that there IS mystic arts, but that they are anything more than INTESELY smart people using their intelect and knowhow of how people think and react to stimuli, well, I'd have to be doubtful. Unless something can be enacted in a controlled setting, I don't quite believe in it. I believe in Chi (the balance between good and evil) but that it's the glowy thing seen in NM.. ummm no... heh. I guess that's just my practical side...
and then my Mikey side overpowers me and I go oooooohhh fabooooo! I WANNA BLOW HIM UP! *dancies around* YAY! *watches TMNT animated gifs in a trance* TURTLE DANCE!
~Mica
*scratches her head* Actually, the real difference between witchcraft and voodoo would be in the details. I'm a big fan of the occult and mystic arts. Got lots of book on them. I don't believe someone could produce balls of light from their hands either (as cool as that would be,) but I believe they can make things happen by force of will, and stuff like that. I think magick is just another science.
Well, I think if people could make things happen (like move big things, etc...) by force of will, I'd be VERY suprised. the only clinical studies were largely unprofessional. (he did NOT bend that spoon! But by his perseasive presenting techniques, he was able to make people think he did!)
However, SMALL amounts of pk (moving small peices of paper, etc..) are scientifically proven to have happened with people who have been practicing their whole lives. Also, that people can make things happen by force of will, yes I do agree. It's like the power of prayer. If enough people think you well, I believe there are certain forces that will make you better (or make a certain thing happen)
~Mica(how I can think this way, but still be amused by saying "rural" repeatively, I don't know... )

Hmmm, this sounds strangely like the ESP convo me and Azure had a month or two ago...
Heh heh. Yes. I didn't mean do things physically with your will, it's more like the prayer thing. Prayer is important. With the chi, you can learn to harness it and move and change it within your own body. And once you do that, you can learn how to manipulate (in good ways) the chi around you to bring happiness, prosperity, and even love.
Machias Banshee
04-07-2002, 04:15 PM
Oh mUCH more than that!
Whenever i tell people about it, they think im nuts or something.
Ive have some really bad bouts of ESP and precognitive dreams ever since middle school. Ranging from something meaningless said by someone on the radio...to plane crashes and bombings.
FREEEEKY! 4 real? I guess i don't know quite how to explain that. The human mind is a GREAT frontier.. we barely know a BIT about it's potential. I think some people are just more sensitive to changes in moods and can see things more clearly, and thus see premontions... why? i dunno... maybe because they use a larger percentage of thier brain power!
~Mica (getting by on minimal brain power just fine.. thank you *twitches* EXCALIBER! ... sorry...)
Machias Banshee
04-07-2002, 04:23 PM
Yeah, they say we only know about 10% of what the human brain is capable of doing.
too truuuuee.. i wonder about that though. I've heard the statistic before and I wonder what they base it on. The percentage of the brain that shows electrical activity at a given scan time? since most scans are done when a person is laying down in a CAT machine, I doubt they're in deep thought.. so we might actually use more of it... and are they counting the large inner brain we use for basic functions? or just the outer cerebrum?
~Mica (again, It's just me and that sceptizum thing)
Maybe ten percent at a time, and women often use more, but the entire brain is used. They know we're using our brain, but they're not sure exactly WHAT is going on.
They've run tests where they ask people questions as they monitor they're brains to judge how much is active. Women use more of their brains during an activity than men do.
Woman use MORE or a larger percentage? *G* and if it's a larger percentage, does that mean we're stupider.. I've often been told it's stupid to dwell on something for too long and think about it too hard... soo..
~Mica (*watches the lava lamp* oooohhhhhh)
*smirk* There are more active areas in a woman's brain than in a man's brain at any given time. Men and women think differently because their brains are wired differently. Women are more efficient at thinking of two things at the same time.
Machias Banshee
04-07-2002, 05:53 PM
eh, Men can only think about two things...
LOL mach... Beer and Sex? "Gimme a beer woman! Sit on my lap!" ~Raph to any female
I think you got your facts mixed up, Kali. Men usually think of more things at one time, but their attention span is shorter. Or maybe you're quoting a differnt study than me. There are several contridicting studies out there on the mental functional differnces between men and women.
~Mica (but what about hermafrodites?)
Gah, I just started getting a headache. All the studies I read of say that there are more connections between the lobes in a woman's brain, so her mental process is faster and she can concentrate on more than one thing. Men, on the other hand, put more mental energy into one task at a time.
But these studies are really confusing. I'm going to stop before I have to break out the legal drugs again.
ok then TOPIC CHANGE! *looks around shiftily in case the topic police will attack her for starting a new topic within this one... AGAIN* hee hee.. anyway.. Is raph a whiner? because a bunch of the true raph types I know are whiners to those that they know well. They may growl and snap at everyone, but when you get to know raph types, they are complainers.. you think Raph is that way?

*hehe* this kinda reminds me of a new movie we got last night, called "The Bandits". Apparently there are these two 'nice' bankrobbers who end up taking this heartbroken-redhead hostage. Then she falls in love with the one bankrobber who reminded me of Raph "aka the Strong One". Later, she fell in love with the other bankrobber, who's like Donny (almost, he's also an obsessive compulsive hypocondriac) "aka the Smart and Sensitive One". It was so funny, cause they wanted her to choose one of them, but she just kept telling them she didn't want too.
