Because bladed weapons are cool?
Heh, yeah that's all I've got.

Okay, is anyone else getting a strong A.C. Farley vib off of these?

Wasn't foolishly expecting that pilot that'll never be aired though... Honest.

Looked kinda like a video game and looked kinda like the Playmates toys artwork. No eyelids? cool. This definitely seems a pretty gritty take on the turtles, I mean that its similar to 2k3.

Y'know what...I'm excited about this show. I didn't think I would be but I am. I was impressed by the concept art and now this.

why do they ALL have to have blade weopons?!

Why shouldn't they all have blade weapons? Not that we'll be seeing any stabbing. If there's any at all it'll be heavily implied like the 4kids show but it looks cool.:tcool:

Hmm, hope this is an unfinished look (a sneak peak at the mutation in progress), as it feels more like a computer game to me...

EDIT: reading back, I sound too negative. We've got progress here, and I like the vibe so far - seems quite dark!

F*ckin' awesome. I love the weapon changes for Mikey & Don too. This looks really dope!

plastroncafe
03-10-2011, 04:30 PM
While I love Don's weapon in the teaser, I'm hoping it doesn't stick.
I mean, it looks cool...but in my mind he's always been far more of a pacifist character. The counterbalance to Raph's berserker.

Oculus Orbus

I absolutely love it. I have to confess that I had really low expectations about the new show, but man, that was amazing.

Hi everyone by the way, it's been a while.

Looks pretty good so far. I wasn't expecting CG on the same level as the movie (maybe early Clone Wars level at best) so this is a promising start, and the quality can only improve over the next year and a half!

I will refrain from commenting and wait until the finished product (or MORE finished) comes to the surface.

bah, OK... looks good so far but I really do hope they add some texture and other little details.

They look like they'd translate perfectly into action figures, sadly fall 2012 is pretty far, I doubt we'll get more info soon, maybe not even at SDCC this year...

So should we consider it a confirmation the show is called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? so will this be called 2k12 to fans? Typing "Nick's TMNT" is a bit long, not to mention every single show after this one will technically also be Nicks TMNT.. We've all grown so used to typing NT for the new show as well and now this would be the NT, but I'm guessing that will be not used to avoid confusion with 2k3 who also can not be called NT since its not new and it would cause confusion.

Okay looks like I'm very late. I'm really excited now! I was expecting worse but what's with the blades and the tape? Hope it's not in the final version. But looks like I was right. They went for a 2007ish look.

sure it does, pre-rendered maybe. In-game; get out of here.

It's clearly a 3D take on the angular blocky modern animated style, it do not look like a final polish and it is still good. Even with the low quality on the video, you can see they're not skimping out on the 3D models

sdp
03-10-2011, 06:35 PM
It wasn't meant to be convincing, just a lame joke, then again Powder is right, theres still people thinking thats a Picture of April in the Alex D. thread...

No way this looks like a PS2/Gamcube/Wii game unless you mean CG renders from that era and not actual gameplay, they do look like something a PS3/360 could make during gameplay but I doubt it, especially when you see the later models and all the things the show will be interacting with. I still don't feel we're playing videogames that look like toy story like we were promised and that was how many years now?

The budget of a movie is much higher than the budget of a tv show, and yeah like it was mentioned just because its blocky doesn't mean the cg isn't good. Clone Wars is blocky and its some of the best CG on tv and even film, thats just the art style they chose.

You do have to take into account budget. the budget for the shows 26 episodes is probably nowhere near the budget for the fully rendered 2007 movie. I'll reserve my judgement until I see it move...well...move more.
EDIT: Raph's other pose.

I dug it. But then again, I've been a firm supporter of the Nick cartoon since they got the rights.

Interesting to see people's stances when stuff is coming out.

Did anyone mention that it looks like Mikey still has nunchukus (in some form)? Its not the chain weapon from the other promo art.

I love the angular/stylized look of the turtles' hands/fingers.

Good gravy, I'd forgotten how terrible that early preview art looked! Yeah, the fact that the series premiere is still probably a year and a half away means the final product will look significantly improved. Granted, I like this preview look for a CGI series, although it does remind me of the cutscenes from the 2007 movie game.

Looks great, but I'm going to be honest and say that I do not like Don's weapon change. I think Nick will still give him his bo - but if not, that weapon is completely opposite to what makes Donatello...Donatello. Not cool. But I'm not going to freak out like the Mikey fans did with the chucks, lol.

oldmanwinters
03-10-2011, 08:48 PM
As regards Donny's new staff, let's not forget that he's always been packed with awesome accessories in addition to his "simple wooden bo that can disarm any adversary!"

Remember the hand sword and battle axe that could slip on the bo from the original 2k3 Playmates toy line?
http://www.figurerealm.com/actionfigure.php?FID=15781&figure=donatello

It seems Donatello has long had an mild affinity for sharp objects. Does anybody else remember that he is pictured with a sword in his belt on the cover of Eastman and Laird's very first issue?

LOL, I thought I was the only one who thought their heads/faces made them look like aliens.

But I agree, there's no detail/texture, anything. Looks like a PS2 game.

I know that this is just a teaser, but how does this relate to the promo image they gave us earlier? I mean, I see a few similarities, but we have pretty much had two completely different concepts displayed to us.

Is this just a teaser and the finalized version will have details similar to the promo image or is the teaser more finalized than the promo image? :tconfuse:

There's over a year before the show airs. I seriously doubt the turtles will look like this. I'm assuming the mutation line was code for "pre-production art" meaning it's not finished. If it is everyone's reaction here may ensure it won't look like this. If they read this board they will see the backlash.

Let's see how totally wrong I was....

Hey guys. I work at Nickelodeon on *ahem* Fanboy and Chum Chum. They had a studio screening of the TMNT pilot in full color animatic form. I can't tell you much about it because I don't want to get fired, of course. Here's what I can tell you:

-The show will be in CG. They showed us a little test clip of Leo swinging his katana around. It looked amazing.

-This is a big reboot. They are not afraid to change things drastically to make the story they want to tell better including character relationships. This is a completely new Turtle universe.

-The show has found a really nice place between action and comedy. The action is impressive and the comedy is truly laugh out loud funny.

-This version of the turtles focusses far, far more on the "teenage" part than any other previous versions of the turtles. This is a good thing. It really brings something fresh and new to the concept.

Bonus info: I watched this sat next to my Fanboy and Chum Chum director, Mr Ken Mitchroney. He agreed, "they nailed it".

I can't really answer more than that, but having been a turtle fan since 1987, this is exciting stuff.

Yep, completely. One wonders if Biggs is the actor he mentions in other posts about being known to us...I hope not.

Watch a cutscene from Konami's TMNT: Mutant Nightmare game for PS2/Gamecube/Xbox. That's the third action/adventure beat 'em up they made, for those who don't know.

My first thought was it wasn't great, there is a lack of sub surface scattering or much in the way of shaders that I can see (maybe turtle skin wouldn't work like human skin with SSS anyway?). Also a lack of any kind of bump or detail on the skin or any type of texture other than the solid color.

Its almost like they tossed on some materials and didn't bother actually texturing the models; tho I am sure its just the style they are going for. I would assume is to make it easier to animate, no muscle suits or anything like that that I can tell. (It's also possible that they are just pre production model's like in the fight test that they did for the 2007 movie with Leo fighting Raph.)

After I watched it several times tho, I do kind of like the style and it seems somewhat mirage-esque. I have to admit I am liking it more and I am actually believing Nick may deliver a good TMNT show, I am happy that they are not making it like the 80's series. Perhaps it will be a little different than all the past iterations.

I like what they are doing with the show logo, although it made me want to see Eastman & Lairds instead of Nicks name (maybe the show will be darker). The models or at least the head remind me somewhat of Dario Brizuela turtle heads with the smaller lower face. Specifically in the Raph pic that was posted. The turtles themselves seem smaller kind of like the first issue but with a different style.

Here is one I grabbed of Mikey.

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/5493/mikey.png (http://img853.imageshack.us/i/mikey.png/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

I will mention these models are higher polygon counts than a ps2 or game cube game. While not detailed in texture or having any sort of displacement normal maps or anything I can see they are models that wouldn't be in a video game from last generation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udSLceu27F0 here is a little comparison with an in game model from last gen. Its also re assuring that nick spends upward of $600-$700 thousand on their animated shows per episode. I'll wager that they will look better than they do now in the show but its cool to see the direction its going.

I would lol if this turned out to be a fans interpretation of the image released earlier this week. They do look to be fairly simplistic models to make but I am sure that's not the case. On a side not I was going to make a joke in another topic about if they gave don a spear and they did in this video.

For pitty's sake Cyber it's prelim animation. It'll be a long time before we see animation from an episode of the show.

Why should we assume it wont look better than that? Planet Sheen and The Penguins of Madagascar look better and the Kung-Fu Panda cartoon in the works looks even better than those and this show isn't coming out until 2012.

But if you're expecting the animation to look as good as a CGI feature film I suggest you sets your sights lower, because CGI TV shows never look as good as a feature film from DreamWorks, Pixar or another quality CGI feature studio.

Watch a cutscene from Konami's TMNT: Mutant Nightmare game for PS2/Gamecube/Xbox. That's the third action/adventure beat 'em up they made, for those who don't know.

Compare a youtube video of that, with the Turtles talking in the cinema scene fighting foot, and compare it to this teaser, it doesn't look much different.

Someone do it right now.

Sorry bud, but i think you need glasses or take a closer look on the images.

The 3D models we've seen in the teaser video, looks way better, the models got a higher polygon count. Not only is it a different style and visualization, the teaser video shows us models made to do a whole lot more then what some video game sprites will do.

this was pretty cool , i like pizza power's idea about them having they're original weapons that can switch into bladed ones. although I don't see why they wouldn't just be bladed in every battle so I guess it really wouldn't matter. Overall i like it it's exciting.

also i like the logo at the end. The bold Font and the brightness of the green looked good imo.

exciting stuff :)

The problem is CG gets dated really quickly especially
on low budget TV shows. If it isn't done well the show will look dated as crap in just a few years.

On the bright side at least it's not N64 graphics.

They should go for the sketch/cel shaded look. I'm taking a 3D class right now and there's a way to put a thick black outline on everything to make it look hand drawn but it's still 3D. It looks good and will stay looking good for awhile. Problem with CG is people try to pass it off as real if they just make it look like a cartoon then you don't run into that problem. I know Nick isn't Pixar but the first Toy Story still looks good and there's no reason this show can't either.

I don't think it really look like each other, if anything they both just have small coincidences.

Candy Kappa

I think you said it better then I did, and more detailed.

Most television looks dated as crap as time goes on, regardless of whether or not it's CG generated or hand drawn. Have you seen Batman the Animated Series recently? I don't know about you, but it's nowhere near as smooth animation wise as I remembering it being when it aired. Even the OT isn't as pretty now as it was back in the day.

I love the weapon modifications. Seriously. Though I won't judge the CGI just yet since it's not final. I remember when they released an early image of the CGI from TMNT 2007 and I thought it looked terrible. Then the final images came out which look a whole lot better and slightly different from the teaser image. So I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

The bo is a wonderful weapon and if you ever have to choose a weapon and only one weapon to learn, I highly recommend it. In a real fight, you're not likely to find a sword, chucks or sai... but a broom handle, stick, mop, and so much more can become the bo staff and aid you in defending yourself.

I don't feel Mike or Don need bladed weapons, but I am happy to know that the blades don't always have to be there. As I noticed with the video of the weapons that they pop out of the weapons. You can even hear the blade come out of the bo staff during the split second Don is on screen. I have shots of the weapons before the blades appear on my review page of the video.

Seriously though, when you take away your capitalization you seem a crap load cooler. Just going to put that out there. Usually what you do say is great, you always bring something good to the table. The capitalization just undermines all of that though, and was slightly obnoxious to read because in my head, every time, I read it like you are having tourettes throughout your sentences. So come back and stay, just leave behind your random caps.

The mixture of the dark and light in the newer show will either break or make it. I am guessing they will be just fine do to the fact it is Nick and they know how to do there stuff. I am quite comfortable with them handling get, for I know whatever direction they will take this it will most likely be decent no matter what.

I always saw it as word emphasis in the same way I like to use italics in some of my posts. The capitalization never bothered me. It was kind of like reading a comic book. In fact, I don't think I really noticed it much until it suddenly became this huge obnoxious thing to a few people.

I'm liking these previews. I do think it gives an impression that the show is going in a good direction but that's all I gleam from it. The bladed weapons are an intriguing touch.

What about this quote:

Nickelodeon promises this version of the franchise will be “funnier and ninja-ier,”

"Funnier and ninja-ier" than what? The OT? 2k3? Comics? I guess I would assume they'd be referring to one of the TV shows, or maybe both. I thought OT was pretty funny and 2k3 was rather ninja-esque, so is the Nick version looking to mix the two old versions together and top both? That sounds good to me.

My biggest question at the moment is what's up with the film reboot? They're releasing these previews for the show but there's no mention of the film. Last I heard, didn't Nick say the film was still a go and would be a lead-in to the new series?

Hmmm. Upon close inspection, it almost looks like Donatello's blade is retractable into the Bo.

We've also noticed the same with Mike's nunchaku.

Damn, haven't logged in here in a while...

Count me excited as well. I like what I'm seeing so far, although it isn't much. Having a new TMNT show is good enough news.

I hope for the ninja-ier, but not for the funnier - I like my turtles badass :D

EDIT: Oh, and hi to everyone who might recognize me from back then!

Yeah, it's hard to see...it was pointed out to me not too long ago. I would prefer the regular bo, by all means, but as long as the blade is *retractable*, I won't get too upset. :)

the retraction is an amazing idea to me, i love it!! Makes the turtles "edgey"

And.... I know where I'm going to intern this summer. :)

I like the tone I see, but the character designs definitely need some work. Hopefully I can get involved in story as well!

Yeah, but the way the blade sticks out, it would probably have to flip up from the side of the handle. Even then the blade looks too tall.

Too tall? Don't see it.

From the side? I don't care.

It's still retractable. It's still cool.

So I have a question. Is it still too early to know if this will be HD or not? It's weird how Nick has an HD channel but the only show that seems to take advantage is iCarly. As far as I know, anyway.

I don't see why it couldn't be...but then again, they have other animated series newer than iCarly that are standard def, right? *shrugs*

I think the design is too simplified, it looks like a cheap PS2 video game. At least make it look more like PS3. But from what ive experienced and seen, character designs go along with how the direction of the show is being told. They keep saying its going to be funnier and more ninjaier? I believe the funnier and goofy part....I know its not going to be edgy and dark like 2K3 was.

They want to win over these little kids just like how they won us over with OT. To be honest, I like the graphics to look just like Marvel vs Capcom 3 is.

i think it looks pretty cool :) though it seems way different then the concept art they put up a bit back (head wise) but oh well. i hope they make them a little more realistic by like adding the spots on their bodies (from the LA films) or something because at the time being they look...idk how to explain it. they kinda look like the NECA Batsu toys, like how smooth and not entirely detailed you know? still think it looks cool tho :D

Awesometacular!

I'm loving the vibes the teaser is giving me. I'm very well aware that the design of the turtles are still a work in progress so it will be higher quality CGI by the time we reach fall 2012.

I also heard there was going to be a longer trailer on April 11 but I don't know if it's for public viewing or just for staff and specialised press. Hoping we get leaked footage. :tsmile:

I expect the show to be in HD/widescreen, I mean every new show is and even some older shows like Teen Titans and The Batman were made in HD/widescreen to futureproof themselves. I'd be surprised if it isn't, I mean the other action shows like Power Rangers and the upcoming Voltron Force also are.

I am sure they will tweak the visuals a bit.Give them some time the flesh everything out.I think we are only seeing animatics from the new series.Basicly a moving storyboards.Again it's way to early to tell from that video when the overall series is going to look like. They will make changes to it.
