View Full Version : The 2012 Splinter

I figured why not talk about another character that seems to be getting a character overhaul in the new show: Splinter (To be fair, the only reason I started this was i saw the April thread, and I just drew a Splinter head...:D I'll post him when I get home.)

So what do we know:
He used to be a human, Hamato Yoshi.
When he was a human he and his wife (we assume Tang Shen) had a daughter. We don't know if she's alive and well or if she may have been killed.
We know he's taller and more intimidating, ala the Archie Splinter.

I honestly have little problems with this development, but it may be my hardcore Archie fanboy-ness. I like the idea of Splinter being a force to be reckoned with (though the size thing is a tad unnecessary, he can still kick butt at a size smaller than the Turtles). Part of me hopes he resembles Chris Allen's take on Splinter from the comics.
He will be brown, since some of you were wondering (thanks Vaughn)

So what are your thoughts on how the Nick series will take on the Turtles' Dad?

Nice Splinter pic, Jester. I like it. As for how they'll use him, I hope he get to fight and not just sit on the sidelines. I hope that he acts like a father figure to the Turtles and not just their sensei. As for the daughter thing, it is intriguing and I'm curious to see how it will play out.

Aw, your artistic skills aren't near as pathetic as you make them out to be, Jester!:twink:

You've improved significantly from your previous efforts (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=747472&postcount=70)!

Mike Dooney would be proud. Maybe.

Lol, I'm with you on wishing I could draw really well, Jester! That Splinter isn't bad at all though!

As far as this new Splinter...I don't mind it much either. I mean, it kind of makes sense since Splinter's pre-mutated form was bigger than the Turtles anyway. Even though he's a human first now. :P I guess I'm okay with that, although I like the Mirage origin better.

I will be overjoyed in overlooking the "man-feet", human, six foot tall Splinter if they say straight out that Tang Shen was Yoshi's wife.

There will be gleeful cackling if they, at some point, give us a flashback to Shen and Yoshi being happily married.

You hear that, Nick? GLEEFUL CACKLING.

The human Splinter doesn't bother me. I'm more worried that they say the Kraang's abduct people and mutate them. I don't want the Turtles to have also been human before.

Hello my name is Adam this is my first post that i have posted here, i have been a long time fans since i was about 1 really, I grew up with the turtles and they were always a huge part of my life. but any way on to my .02 I think the taller splinter will be awesome, in my head splinter never really was involved in much of the fighting and training except in the 2k3 show. he was a little more active in the 2k3 show but in the OT he was goofy, when he did martial arts he would be yelling stuff like Sacajawea which i now find ironic as i live in Oregon and she helped to find the Oregon coast. but i digress it would be cool see this ultimate martial arts master and maybe at one point become crippled by shredder fueling the tension between the turtles and shredder. As for the whole Kraang thing Its Kraang Not the kraang not the kraangs there is not s there is no the. You only use the in certain contexts. I find this to be an awesome through back to the OT really is it that annoying to some? It makes me feel funny to see people that upset, there trying to make old fans happy by using cameos like that for the new show. Come one they could have named it something completely different i mean were you really that mad that the OT didn't have a whole race like krang like the Original comic or that he wasn't called a utrom at all, your not complaining now, because that was just part of the show. So seriously i think its an awesome addition. Sorry for the rant. thank to all who will listen.

I wonder that too, ToTheNines.
No PizzaPower, no picture yet.
I've always liked the FW origin for Splinter if only because a ninja master mutated to a rat makes more sense than a rat learning ninjutsu as a rat and then mutating.
I really like the idea of Yoshi and Shen's daughter, and I hope she's alive. It makes for a lot of interesting story possibilities. How old was she when Yoshi was "killed"? Was she raised by Saki after he "killed" her father (and possibly her mother)? Will one of the plot point be the Turtles and Splinter trying to redeem their sister/daughter?

i hope he is pink. lol

Not too fussed about the height, gonna be a bit weird having a tall Splinter, rather than a wee one, but its a change that I don't mind. Also, contrary to Jester, i'd much rather a look similar to the TMNT movie. That for me was my favourite design. To be honest, as much as I love his art, i've never been a fan of Chris Allen's Splinter...

The thing that i'm most excited about is the idea that he has a daughter. That for me has great potential!

I Love the 'new' taller Splinter. That's how he was in the Archies Comics, and that's how I personally draw Splinter all the time. It's like they copied him out of my art...

And Plastron... I think I might be hearing you cackling from up here in NH.. ;) I am VERY hopeful that they will have Tang Shen involved, considering Splinter's gonna have a daughter.. :)

I don't mind Mirage Splinters origin but I do much prefer Splinter being human, him being tall doesn't bother me, it might when I see it but meh I doubt it. Splinter did look a bit odd in The Next Mutation because he seemed really tall though. I love the idea of him having a daughter, that sounds like it'll be an interesting plot device.

So do we know what color is Splinters fur yet? Brown or Grey? I kinda prefer grey myself but I don't mind brown.

I tend to agree with the pro pre-human Splinter group.I think its more acceptable to have him be human and a martial arts master as his original form.I didn't mind the Y2K3 version but I just don't buy the whole rat learning ninja moves from his master.Even before the mutation,Splinter must have been a very smart rat in that regard.

Also, Dear Nick/Playmates:

See! You CAN make a rat-feet Splinter figure!

First have to say I love that figure. I am sort of sad we didn't also get the Playmates Comic line. But that is a topic for another thread.

Okay the more I've thought about the whole daughter thing the more I think I like it. There are so many different ways to go with this. I just hope if they go the way I think they will, and it seems most others, then they take their time and do it well. It does sadden me though that if it is Karai that they keep making her somones daughter in the cartoons.

TBF, 2K3 Splinter as a rat stayed with the Ancient One in the backstory. Maybe magical powers rubbed off on him before he got splayed by mutagenic ooze.

And yes on Karai as Yoshi's missing girl. Or Lotus Blossom. Whoever comes first.

I was watching some OT stuff tonight and honestly, I could totally go for a Splinter like that again. I always pretty much hated the way Splinter was drawn in Archie and I'm not sure if I need a "big" Splinter.

I suspect that Splinter is tall entirely for reasons to make it seem as though he is the ADULT of the group. In previous incarnations, Splinter comes off more like the Turtles' Grandpa than Dad. Which is why they're so easily able to leave at will and do what they want. Grandpa's in the other room sleeping, let's go raise some hell. I have a sneaking suspicion that they're going to try and make him more of a father figure in this sense and have made him taller strictly for that appearance and be able to boss the turtles around.

Of course, we'll just have to wait and see. I'm just more curious what the design will be. The Turtles artwork, what little we've seen, is alright, but a bit drastic in parts and Splinter's design is one of the few that can have a variety of different interpretations. However, if it edges even slightly in the wrong direction, the character can suffer for it. The TMNT have a little more leeway in that sense, so long as they have green skin, masks and turtle shells. Splinter though, although prone to design change, has to avoid looking like a leftover Rescue Range.

Just a thought,if Yoshi was mutated into splinter(mutant in rat appearance while retaining human intelligence) under the effect of ooze, after having physical contact with a rat, then based on this same process, the turtles should be mutated into humans (while retaining turtles' mind),being last picked up by Yoshi when the ooze was covered on them.Or should be mutant rats if they were picked up after Yoshi had mutated into Splinter.
1)yoshi>rat>ooze>rat in human size & intelligence
2)turtles>human>ooze>humans in turtles size & intelligence
3)turtles>mutant rat>ooze>mutant rat in turtles size & intelligence
Reversely if the result needs to be turtles in human size & intelligence, the host might have to be humans?
Well,anyway it's just a weird contradicting theory I've been wondering.thanks.

I'm rather excited to see (If they stick with it) a 6 foot tall Splinter. XD
I don't know why, I think it would be SO beast. I'm totally fangirling out over here.

The whole idea of him having a family REALLY catches my interest. Especially the Daughter. O:
I'm REALLY iching to see some Concept art with Splinter, Shredder, April and Case. (If there isn't already).

I dislike the toy design, but he'll probably look better in the show. If not... oh well, I'm sure he'll be an awesome character in spite of a questionable character design.

I'm very interested to hear from a producer or other Nick official as to why they deviated so far from the norm though. From what I've seen/heard from Ciro Nieli so far, he seems to put a lot of thought into this stuff, so they might have a good reason.

I'm hoping that the Splinter design will work better in motion than it does as a static image. About the only positive thing I think I can say about what I've seen thus far is:

At least he's still in keeping with the "Looks Nothing Like An Actual rat" tradition.

I think Splinter's appearance has this radiance of wisdom and demanding respect. He also looks a lot less weak and frail! Hopefully that means more fight scenes with him!

I hope there is still that obvious presence of him being a father to the turtles. I enjoy seeing the fatherly side of Splinter.

BubblyShell22
02-02-2012, 04:10 PM
I'm not too keen on his design, but I hope his character makes up for it. I hope he's a father to the Turtles as well as a ninja master who fights alongside his sons instead of sitting on the sidelines. This is what I loved about the 2K3 cartoon the most.

Well, as long as Casey Jones isn't like Gronk...

I'm really thinking Splinter's some sort of obscure type of fancy rat. Other than that... the figure and the animatics from the special preview - he looks So much like a lot of my splinter sketches... human body, white on the face, long ears. I'm half expecting to see some screenshots of him with his daughter looking like this (http://machiasbanshee.deviantart.com/art/TMNT-OC-Hamato-Mitsukai-196200098) soon...

I'm really eager to see what they do with his character. This is easily the youngest version of Splinter we've ever seen, outside of Archies - and even then, they said he was pushing his 70s there...

It must be the bushy eyebrows I gave him.

I can't help but add a little texture and depth to his fur. Action figures, on the other hand, generally come out looking a little flat due to the mold limitations. So maybe he'll look great in his fully rendered 3D glory!

Anybody else thinks Nick's Splinter (http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa13/chumpsta/1a9ccbca.jpg) looks like a Red Panda (https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1366&bih=622&q=red+panda&gbv=2&oq=red+panda&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&gs_sm=3&gs_upl=853l2518l0l4689l9l9l0l1l1l0l191l801l5.3l8l0 )?

:tlol: Yeah, I agree with you. That is weird. So Splinter is now part rat, llama, and red panda.

I wonder if we'll see Splinter bust out the bow & arrow in this series. I don't know why, but I've always loved it when he does that.
