Hey everybody! I don't post here often, I mostly just look around at all the cool stuff people post but I finally have something to add. One of my main hobbies is costuming and prop building. I've focused mainly on Star Wars over the years but lately have started to branch out into my other fandoms. A couple months back I started working on a Casey Jones hockey mask and costume and I wanted to share some photos.
The mask started out as a Pepakura template which I printed out and cut out of thin cardboard. Once assembled I began coating the front and back with bondo and resin. Here was the first pass.

Here’s the second pass, after lots of sanding and spot putty.

At this point it was easier to see the asymmetry so I got to work on that. I also cut out the eye and mouth holes.

Originally I had planned on making a mold and casting the mask in resin but an opportunity came up that allowed me to get some vacuum formed copies made and so I did. I shot some video of the process and have the clips compiled in this Youtube video:
http://youtu.be/twjB4HzI7gk
I was very pleased with the results. I feel pulling them from styrene made them feel more like a real hockey mask (just not as durable, of course).
Now, you can't be Casey Jones without an assortment of sports equipment to lug around. I picked up a nice golf bag (in Playmates' pale green!) and some clubs from Goodwill. I also picked up some cheap bats here and there but I had to make the hockey stick myself. Apparently there isn't a lot of hockey played here in Nevada, go figure...

I debuted my finished costume at Phoenix Comic Con at the end of May. It received an surprising amount of attention, I guess there's more TMNT fans out there than I realized. I brought a few different shirts to switch into throughout the weekend, including a hoodie for more of a movie-look (with wig!) and a bloodied t-shirt, complimented by a battle-damaged mask. Here's a couple shots from the weekend.

But the story doesn't end there folks! I took my costume to Comic-Con International in San Diego a couple weeks back and had a grand ol' time.
Afterwards I finally had the time to take some good shots of my mask.

Now, you might be thinking 'Hey, that looks like Kevin Eastman drew it!'. Well, that's because he did! At Comic-Con I had Kevin sketch on the mask like he would if he were drawing it on paper and I couldn't be happier with the final product.

Just incredible man. Eastman made the mask look so much cooler! Can't believe all the great photos you managed to get. Eastman. Green. And the other Green (the 4 Nick turtles!!!). April. Multiple Shredders... you had a blast

That is an incredible mask! I have very little skill at designing costume pieces like that. I made a Casey Jones mask a couple of years ago for halloween out of cardboard and my wife dressed as April O'niel. It turned out OK for just being a stupid cardboard mask, but I've always wanted a really great replica. I've seen some replicas of his mask from the first movie, but this comic version is much cooler in my opinion and the sketching makes it look even more amazing. I really thought your avatar was a comic panel until I saw the rest of the photos.
That's it, I think you've inspired me to make my own mask. You can't learn if you don't try, right?

I apologize for this being a bit off topic, but I just went to your website to find some pics to send to a friend and I have to say I love that you had a Nathan Explosion costume and that Dethphone is probably my favorite movie/tv show prop I have ever seen recreated in real life simply because of its ridiculousness and total impracticality. And the Explosion Sauce? Just amazing. If only you had some Pickle's Nickels.
Very nice grats on the mask.
Totally Sweet!
Such an awesome Mask and the details by Eastman make it Epic! Very Nice

Classic!!
Love what you did with the mask. Your work on it was great, but Eastman's touch was definitely the icing on the cake.

Man, that's some good stuff right there. The mask was cool by itself, but then getting Eastman to do that makes it even better!
AWESOME -- and the Eastman-inked mask is both functional and an awesome collectible. Great work all around (and damn, I'm sad I missed you at SDCC)!

Really cool! Good job, man!
Also, I'm sure Seth Green asked to have a pic taken with you and not vice versa.

Thanks for the feedback everybody, I really appreciate it!
For those interested, I do plan on offering these masks in the future. No solid information at the moment but stay tuned.

It's funny you mention that because that's exactly what happened. I had to get one for myself afterwards!

Did he sign it on the inside of the mask?
Yes, he did. It got a little smudged from wearing it at the con but it's still legible.

Super cool mask! I was Casey Jones (original movie) for Halloween a few years ago - see my avatar. I'm in Alabama - had a hard time finding a hockey stick and mask, as well. Ended up modifying a cheap mask from Walmart, and bought a broken stick of ebay. Your hockey stick looks awesome, too. I dressed like him for a party, and people knew who I was. I dressed up a few days later on Halloween to hand out candy, and the kids throught I was Jason :( Poor youth of today. Well done!

I dressed has Casey Jones on Halloween a few years ago and my wife was April (w/ the yellow jumpsuit naturally). We went downtown to 6th street which is always a huge party here in Austin and our goal was to get a picture with every ninja turtle we saw. You wouldn't believe how many people dressed as turtles wanted a picture with my wife, but had no idea who I was. This was also the first year of the "sexy" TMNT costumes if that tells you anything about the type of people we saw dressed as ninja turtles.:trolleye:
I also had a bouncer grab me as I was walking into a bar. I thought he was going to throw me out because he thought I had a fake ID or something, but he was really just trying to show me his Casey Jones tattoo.

Dude, this mask is bad as heck man! I think I saw you at the con too. You are pretty tall I think. I'm just shy of 6 feet but I remember looking and saying "hey Casey!", but it was crazy busy and I was walking in the other direction.
Man, I was at the con and didn't pick up any TMNT swag! I mean like comic books and paperbacks...I just spend half a grand on Hasbro's stuff over the week and passed on anything else. Then after the con I got the TMNT bug. But I'm going next year! Hope to see you there.

Just wanted to share this picture from this past weekend's Las Vegas Comic Expo. I busted out the sweatpants for my Mirage Casey this time. I also made a new mask and replicated Kevin's sketch work so I don't have to risk ruining the original. Here I am with my buddy and his incredible Bane costume.

I recently modified a pull of my Mirage style mask and turned it into an IDW mask! It's also up for auction on eBay, I've posted it in the B/S/T forum for those interested.
