View Full Version : Have you ever tried to lift a manhole cover?
I never realized how heavy they were! I mean, I knew they were heavy, but I thought I could at least budge it, but no! But the ones here aren't completely flat, so that may have something to do with it.
Yes, this is on topic. How do the Turtles lift those things?!? They've gotta be really, really strong. Because those guys who do maintenance on them use a lever to lift them (I saw it done once) but the Turtles use their hands! Damn.

I dunno if they're any lighter over here, but a client I used to work with was always lifting up one in particular.. I had to keep getting it off her and putting it back... those things are really heavy!
I guess the turtles are stronger than me, though how they throw them in the video game is a mystery!

Machias Banshee

They probly had to do a Sheetload of exercises with them to get strong enough to lift them. pushups with one on their shells (and keep it from falling off  ), sit ups with one on their stomachs, leg lifts and all sorts of nasty lil' exercises...

I can honestly say that I've never tried lifting one. But they've gotta be heavy...I mean, cars occassionally drive on top of them!

I've never tried, but I figured that the covers were pretty heavy. I mean, they have to be heavy as a safety precaution. That way, people won't be sneaking off into the sewers or falling in.
I know they're heavy. I might be able to leg press one (maybe) but there's no way I could lift one with my scrawny arms. No wonder the guys' arms are so developed! *dreamy stare*

I know, I always wondered that too. Aren't those things a wee bit heavy? I too have seen ppl use tools to open them since they are so heavy. And in one ep I saw Leatherhead kick the manhole cover open with his foot, wow! Cartoons are fake is all I can say.
Plus I swear the turtles are on steroids or something. Such huge muscles, and esp. in The Next Mutation! I mean ever wonder why they can eat all the pizza they want and never gain weight, and still have those great muscles as they do? Unless they have a high metabolism from all those exercises or weight training. But still, if you eat that kinda junk all the time as they do, you're bound to gain some weight.

Heh... I think we had to tough it out. It's a nice thing though, that when you go to sleep the olfactory glands seem too also.
But do you know what a Triscuit is? It's this baked wheat snack cracker. I always thought lingering skunk stench smells like an old burnt triscuit with a hint of earthy, raw garlic odor thrown in.
Just to get back on topic... anyone read Sue Stitler's True Forces yet? There's a part inthe story where Raph gets sprayed by a skunk (and he wasn't pleased either!)

But taking many tomato juice baths is the best way I heard to alleviate the stink.

I'm not sure... actually lifting one must put an incredible strain on your back... but I don't think pushing one from below would be too easy, either. You'd only have ladders or something for leverage, wouldn't you?
Plus reaching up can be more of a strain than lifting something .. like the trap door in a loft or attic.. ummm.. not that they're very heavy...

Yeah, I'd say lifting it from below would be easier. Keep in mind that they don't really need to pick it all the way up, merely push (or pull) it up enough to slide it open, which I think would be easier.
But how they manage to lift and balance manhole covers on their heads in one of the early cartoons is beyond me. I think it was the second ep.

What was funny, is that my bro still lives with my parents. So a couple years ago, he bought a PC that had a DVD-rom too. My parents didn't have a DVD player yet, so when they all decided to rent a DVD, they would grab some chairs and gather round my borther's PC to watch it. Then my Dad finally got a DVD player last Christmas.
Oh.. I also heard they have a CD video of the TMNT movie, that you can also play through your CD-ROM on your PC too. Dunno if that one has all the features the DVD player has though.

HorseTechie
05-23-2002, 08:48 PM
 I also got the Behind the Shells video from eBay a few years ago. It's a really neat feature covering the BG and history of the TMNT in genreal, the big fad it created, and the making of highlights of the second movie (animatronics, martial arts training, and even the chorography for the Vanilla Ice scene). I watch this one more than I do TMNT2!
I bet this would be on the special release DVD too, whenever they come around with it.

Ooh, I can't wait to watch it! It sounds so cool. If they ever do get that special edition DVD out, then I'd expect Behind the Shells to be a part of it. Yep, I read that article. I liked the pics too, but whoever wrote the captions must've been held hostage with a blindfold on. I can't believe how many times Mikey was confused for another turtle, not to mention the fact that the writer thought the TMNT lived in Gotham. *sigh*
HorseTechie
05-29-2002, 06:38 PM
Yeah.. Like he thinks cause it's from a comic book, then it's okay to call it Gotham. Whatever.
But I think the reporter, caption writer, whatever, was not an expert. Really good reporters and photgraphers in the business are more careful in getting the facts right. I'll admit, I won't know which Power Ranger was who.. but I know some kids would hate it if I mixed em up.
