Toybox art was incredible, meeting his match only with the one used for the 1990 Technodrome. The Playset was awesome too, full of details and great concepts (the manhole, the real working elevator, the tubes) that made any kid´s day back in those days. Although not very toon accurate and perhaps not big enough, it was a dream come true for any of us to have this in our home.

The Sewer Playset (better known as The Turtle ´s Lair) made his debut in the very first episode of the original Tv series “Turtle Tracks” and lasted till the end of the show. In my opinion, this was more than a toy, this defined the Turtles way of living.

The sewer was a theme in the majority (if not all) the products of the originaly toyline. The sewer way of life became a staple in all Tmnt incarnations till today and despite the fact that two much modern and bigger playsets came after this one (in different toylines) the original, the first will always remain as “the one”.

If you got the 1990 Technodrome and you are still wondering if there is any other big fish in the tank, well...this is the one you are looking for.

Hope you liked and thanks for reading.

What do you think about this vehicle? Do you got it?

Any memories you wanna share from where you bought and saw it the very first time ?

P.D. Back in those days anyone thought that it would be nice living in a Sewer after getting this Playset

Thanks for reading.

Unfortunately never had this in my childhood. But would have been very important to me. The Turtles habitation !! I tinkered some ...

The box art for this playset was the first to feature the figures (as they are in actuality) on it. The artwork for the Chromedome card was another. This took up a lot of space on store shelves.

I received the Sewer Playset for Christmas one year and it remained a treasured toy for many years after. It's one of the few pieces from my childhood which I regret giving away to my younger cousin.

I don't think any of the subsequent sewer playsets have come close to being as great as the original sewer playset. I really liked that you had both a "street" playset and the underground "sewer" playset. I am surprised that an "extension" was never produced by Playmates since the smaller section of the playset seemed designed to be added to, although that may have simply been a design function of the sewer pipes.

I added a couple of cardboard boxes to the playset as additional "rooms" when I was a kid and a "garage" for the Party Wagon as well.

Never had as a child, so glad I bought it in my adult years! Complete with box! Also, I ordered some new reproduction decals from Tom over at myteefinestuff

If I was aware of this since I tended to overlook TMNT playsets in favor of cars and real world playsets such as a Parking Garage and Main Street, I would have loved to purchase this when I was younger. That said, I purchased mine in Christmas 2011 (see the recent steals thread) and I'm still missing that yellow (not purple as shown on the box) Studded Sewerball that was used as a Foot attack.

Except for some European Vacation episodes and some Red Sky arc episodes, the Sewer Lair appeared in every episode of the OT, and consider it an essential purchase to any collection, and is a bargain compared to the Nick Sewer Lair. I love how there is a topside section that the later series' lair lacks, and with the pipes, there's always room to expand the lair via multiple sets, and let's not forget locking the Technodrome with one end of the lair.

I had the sewer as a kid and really enjoyed playing with it. I loved the red swing light pole and elevator features. Box artwork was also fantastic, I think I like this box artwork a tad bit more than the technodrome, but it is a very close call.

I sold it before I moved to Chicago with the rest of my loose stuff because at the time I had one MISB. Got to Chicago and ended up selling the MISB one (still wishing I hadn't sold it).

Anyway, I think it is a must have for any collection, loose or MIB/MISB.

In my mission to get a lot of the vintage TMNT stuff, including many things I didn't have as a child, this was one of the top priorities to get.

I got one loose and complete a few months back and I do love it. Of course, given I already had the new 2012 Sewer Playset before this, it felt a bit underwhelming in some regards.

However, seeing a lot of nods to the vintage set in the modern one makes me appreciate it a lot more. And looking at it from a child's standpoint from the late 80s/early 90s, this is an epic playset with a lot of things to do.

And unlike the modern Sewer Playset, this one is not as big a pain to find room for. >_>

I find it funny that it's a recovery room when to me it just seems like a place for the turtles to sit back and relax. There's even a poster of a girl they can look at while laying there, kind of like people that had posters on their ceilings when they were younger.

It's a shame a good chunk of the lair is stickers in doorways, but it still is a cool playset with stuff to do.

I think people have asked him on YouTube about it since he's shown he has the Lair multiple times in his skits. He said he'll get to it, but not right away as he works on other projects than R2T3.

Good to know that my sewer is only missing 3 parts. The none swinging telephone pole, the curved pipe piece, and the part everyone seems to be missing the spiky yellow ball.

I wanted this soooooooo badly as a kid, but my parents never really got me any of the expensive vehicles or playsets (except the Star Wars AT-AT, possibly the favorite toy of my youth).

I never knew that it was intended to connect with the Technodrome, that is frigging AWESOME! I fully intend on adding this to my collection once i get some disposable income, and you can bet it will be displayed while attached to my Technodrome in all its plastic glory. Great review.

Unfortunately, I never had the Sewer Playset as a kid. I just had the figures and some of the vehicles. It's great to hear that so many Dromers here still have theirs!

A toy dealer I know at my local flea market has one that was sealed in box. He opened and assembled it himself for display. He might possibly sell it to me sometime in the future, but right now I don't think he's ready to part with it. Every time I see him, I keep asking him about it. :tgrin:

It can be done.
However, it works better with the Anchovy Alley set. The piping can connect to the break away sewer enterance, if you set the two playsets at the right heights.

I am looking to move apartments in the next couple of weeks, so I'm packing up just now or I'd show pics.

That would be REALLY interesting to see. Especially if there are photos of it to post in the near future. I must say seeing that playset on the shelves at TRU has tempted me multiple times haha.

I had the sewer as a kid. Infact I had it up until a few years ago when I dropped it off at Value Village. By this time it was missing most of the small parts, but I still had the original box (although really banged up). Actually I dropped off a ton of figures with it and some other vehicles. Should have kept them and sold them properly now that I look back on it.

It's well designed.

However, it could be better.

If it were a mini set, that would be great.
To be such a big size, it could have been designed to be much more complex with more fun.

hey! I was at that Toy Show yesterday! Did you get that Technodome for $40? I hate myself for not jumping on it, but when I went back for it...it was GONE. The other guy that had one wanted $70ish, and i only had $45.
The guy with the Hot Toys sold me his Sewer Playset at one of the GSO toy shows at least a year ago...maybe exactly. He had a HUGE vinyl TMNT case full of figures this time.

Has anyone ever customized the 1989 Sewer Playset at all? I've always wanted to try and furnish it with a couch and TV, like they had in the OT series. I could probably use one of the TV's that comes with the Toon Turtles figs.

Also, perhaps making a workshop for Donny, or a kitchen for Michelangelo :tgrin:

No, no one has ever customized the Lair. People have made their own Sewer Lair playsets. It cannot be too hard to make a Sewer Lair out of paper towel rolls, shoe boxes, cardboard box and a soap dish. I am sure there were many who resorted to doing this.

The only part I never understood was the yellow peg that went into the top of the playset next to the fire hydrant. It just plugged in there, not being functional I wonder if it was was for a feature that was scrapped before production.

I think it's to be like the end of a pipe or something when you're not putting the spiked ball on there. Basically a plug for a hole when not in use.

It's a shame playsets aren't as out there as they used to be. Really aside from the 2012 sewer playset, the only times I see playsets now is in real little kid lines like Imaginext or girls toys like My Little Pony...

I've noticed that too. There aren't a whole lot of playsets to go with the different action figure lines. It's more of action figure variants and accessories. As kids, we had the Sewer Lair, Technodrome, Ghosbusters Firehouse, Batcave, and MOTU Slime pit. Heck, I remember my friend having a Daily Bugle playset from the Spiderman toyline in the 90's (which also came with green slime!).

However, it's awesome that the 2012 TMNT line has a Sewer Lair. I hope they make more playsets!

congrats on the score

Thanks man. Unfortunately it turns out that it's missing more pieces than I thought. The yellow fire hydrant piece he had was the wrong one. Luckily I was able to get most of the missing pieces on ebay for a good deal. When I'm finished with it, it should be about 99% complete.

Yeah I've ordered stuff from myteefinestuff before to complete my items. He has the last piece I need (the yellow spy hydrant valve), but he's charging $15 for it -__________-

Has anyone ever customized the 1989 Sewer Playset at all? I've always wanted to try and furnish it with a couch and TV, like they had in the OT series. I could probably use one of the TV's that comes with the Toon Turtles figs.
The actual space inside the playset doesn't give you enough room to recreate the 80s cartoon lair tv room to scale. Details like the stop sign and the dragon poster are kept relatively true to scale but moved closer together in relation to each other versus their distance on the show. I've loved my Sewer Playset for 21 years, but as a kid it always bothered me that it didn't represent the cartoon lair. Now, it does!:tgrin:

Not really room for a sofa. Not pictured is the view of the main room looking into the playset from the pipe entrance. I used a screengrap of that boarded up entrance that the camera would always pan down to in so many episodes for that doorway, since the toon diorama's back covers it. Toying with the idea of taking off the rear pipe section and placing a screenie from the sewer stages TMNT for NES back there.

Wow, that's a really nice custom job there, well done!! That looks like something I'd wanna do with my Sewer Playset. Thanks for posting. I like the details with the walls you made in the big room. How did you make it? I like how you use the TV accessory from the Toon Turtles. I have a yellow sofa from the MLP Paradise Estate I could use, but I don't think it would fit in there.

Thanks, cool that you like it. Ninety percent of the credit for it should go to oldmanwinters here on the forums, because of all his amazing screenshots in this Lair Layout thread.
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=26534

I basically downloaded every image and then looked at what I had to work with. I wanted what I was doing to be completely sourced from the actual cartoon. So, I used a screenshot of the sewer brick wall as my base, and with a general screenshot of the room as a whole I added the rest of the details from the huge library provided by oldmanwinters in that thread. For example, a screenshot of the portal looking into the kitchen or the exit, I'd erase everything except for that element, save it as a seperate image in case I screwed up and wanted to start over, then copy and paste it to my diorama background. This is just in Windows Paint, nothing fancy. Then just print them off (preferrably on cardstock, regular paper is fine too), cut a thin cardboard box like a 24 pack of soda to fit inside the playset, and affix the images to the inside of the box. This is something I've wanted to do for years but getting all the screenshots and reference I needed prevented me from doing it. Now my playset has the nostalgia of the toy combined with the nostalgia of the cartoon. Yay for the Technodrome Forums!

That MLP sofa might work, I just google image searched it. Hard to get a sense of scale. I really want to try the sofa from the 2003 playset in this, because that has the same exact look as the vintage toon one if it's spray painted the right color.

Here's the backgrounds for anyone who wants to use them. Pardon the white space, it's to help your printer print them at the correct size:

That' really awesome, dude. Fantastic job! I was going through that thread by oldmanwinters, I had never been on that thread before! It's a great source for understanding the layout of the lair!

As far as the mlp couch goes, I can show you what it looks like when my Sewer Lair is assembled and I can take pictures. But yeah, that couch from the 2003 Sewer Lair might be a better fit. I wonder how many turtles you can fit on that couch?

I believe only two. I'm only going by pictures but I think the 2003 couch has a good scale but if it was placed in my custom playset there would maybe be standing room for only one or two figures before it'd look crowded.

I made completing my sewer a game of build-a-playset. I didn't always have the money for one straight out as i wanted the figures first, so I bought a piece at a time. I was actually able to get the two different cables for the TV as they were usually missing from various auctions for sewer. I got them in an accessory lot as well as the elevator parts and the yellow peg, the wires and yellow peg surprised me as I didn't notice them in the picture on the auction. So a few more auctions and lots later and I have enough walls to build two more sewers, though they have the bed they are missing everything else.

I had this thing as a kid, so I knew what went with it pretty well. Now I have a home for the turtle boys. Now while I still love the old school one I grew up with, I actually like the 2012 sewer a little more for its open space and its tallness.

The only part I never understood was the yellow peg that went into the top of the playset next to the fire hydrant. It just plugged in there, not being functional I wonder if it was was for a feature that was scrapped before production.

That yellow peg is the plug to the hydrant. It's a non functioning decorative piece that in pretend playtime would have the periscope hidden. It's not meant as a plug for any abandoned action feature.

Just picked up another sewer yesterday locally for $10. Was able to take the pieces to complete the one I had as a kid. I am still missing two pieces, but I'm hoping to get them ordered this week.

This is what I was trying to explain here. In both moody and normal lighting styles.

Very kind of you, 1987. I appreciate your words very much. I always wanted my turtles figures in the lair from the cartoon. So happy other people think it's cool, too.:)
