Looks really fun, and it seems like its intended to be in the same continuity as the cartoon, at least so far. I want this comic to be like "lost episodes" of the cartoon, rather than going into its own universe like Archie did.
Several DC comics like Young Justice went this route.

Man. IDW is killing me! Reprints from two different universes, and now two different ongoing series, one of which has regular micro-series issues!
I'm afraid to say that, aside from this free issue, I might have to pass on the animated series.
And yeah, I know...TOO MUCH turtles does seem like a silly thing to complain about... :tconfuse:

Spoiled for choice!
I believe that's the term, anyway.
I'll be lining up next Saturday morning with everyone else to hopefully get my copy. I STILL haven't seen the show, but I want to keep up with cataloging all the releases for TMNT Entity, so I'll get it even if none of it makes sense to me (I'll probably have a lot of continuity questions for you guys who have seen the new cartoon to straighten me out).
But I dig Dario Brizuela's art, so I'm sure to enjoy it for that quality if nothing else.

I wouldn't read the comic before seeing at least the first two episodes of the show. The turtles personalities in the cartoon are the best characterized as teens as they've ever been.

This seems more like the kick off for the ongoing. It'd be a little nuts to give away the first issue since #1's tend to sell well. I didn't even hear they were going to do 4 issue arcs. Did you hear that somewhere or is that just an assumption?

The Dredd and TMNT FCBD issues are to promote the series debuting in July.
Mine is a standalone that could just as easily have been #1. That said, I'm excited to have written the FCBD issue!

Interesting so that means we're getting at least 5 comics based on the Nick cartoon then.
I imagine if all the kids watching the show pick this up it'll be successful enough for an ongoing. If not....well it was a nice experiment.

If the continuity of this comic series is separate from the TV show I may become interested int it.
This is not to say the show isn't good, I just haven't been watching it. I have trouble keeping up with my "adult" tv shows as it is. This is not to say one night this summer I wont attempt a bing and see what i think.

Looks cute. I'll try to pick up the FBCD issue and the rest of the series might be something I pick up in trade form down the line. I think it's great that IDW's introducing an all-ages book, and I hope it does well with its target audience.
Content-wise, while I'd be slightly more interested to have this develop its own story-lines, I'm more expecting it to read like apocryphal adventures set in the Nick universe a la most of DC's animation-based comics. But that can be fun as well.

That's EVERY BOOK EVER. Well, not the five and done.
Books are approved in blocks. Fans shouldn't consider anything other than "I want to support this" or "I don't want to support this."
Second guessing ("It won't last so I won't pre-order" or "I'll buy it later, it'll be around") can lead to cancellation.
So don't try to guess. Just pre-order if you want to support a given book, and ask others to do the same. (From a local shop or an online store that does pre-orders. THOSE are what affect orders and the bottom line!)
And remember, I also write Ghostbusters and would love your support there. q-:
(Seriously, at least spread the word. Some folks still don't know we exist!)
Now back to turtles. I'm plotting out a story about--- oops, out of space.

I am liking what I'm seeing. The artwork and coloring is pretty good and the writing might even be better than the art. I don't really care if they have the stories take place between episodes or not and if it's totally canon and in synch with the cartoon. As long as it's good and they have fun with it I will be satisfied. Just as long as they don't take things too far.

Lovin' it. I wonder if it will eventually break out into it's own thing? It is a little difficult to make a comic based on a cartoon that changes the general status quo every 2 episodes.

This. ^ I sell off my individual issues after the trades come out, but I don't WAIT until the trades come out to read the stories because that doesn't help this series stay on-going. I order copies for at least two other people every month and sometimes I order two copies for myself, since that can lead to having five or six consecutive issues to sell when I can get the trade instead of only four.
Some copies of this FBCD book have already leaked, I'll have mine tomorrow. :twink:

The difference is unlike the main IDW comic, this is aimed at kids watching the Nick cartoon. So it really depends on how many little kids are aware of this comic and beg their parents to buy it for them every month.
Is Nick doing anything to promote this comic? It would be good if their aired commercials for it during the cartoon to let kids know of its existence.

Eh... a lot of the kids watching the Nick show have parents who were, and still are in many cases, hardcore TMNT fans, as many conversations on these boards will attest to-- not only that, but most of us who read the comics watch the show too (the inverse isn't necessarily true, as there are a lot of younger fans on these boards who constantly post to the Nick show section of the boards but never post here in the comics section). So I'm thinkin' that if the goal is to sell books, we're their primary target audience... it is more likely that we'll pick up the book on a regular basis than kids who aren't necessarily partial to TMNT versus something like SpongeBob or Kung-Fu Panda.

I used to be a strict trade-waiter but have recently switched to buying digital issues as they come out, and then buying trades for future reading (as I'll probably do for this series as well). Series I'm not as invested in, I still forgo the digital issues and just wait for trades.
I still think the industry needs to reconsider how it tabulates sales to accommodate people who wait for trades, though. They're not going away, and a lack of monthly purchases doesn't necessarily mean they're not reading. It shouldn't be fans' responsibility to conform purchasing methods to an outdated model just to show the powers that be that they care.

No doubt IDW is expecting they'll get some crossover from fans of other Turtles comics, but the idea behind an all-ages title is to, well, target all ages, especially if the main book has content not suitable for children. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet the target demographic for this comic is indeed kids who are watching the new cartoon. This is something they can see in a comic shop or wherever else and latch onto.
That also makes it an ideal choice for a Free Comic Book Day give-away. You know what demographic tends to pick up comic books that day when they otherwise wouldn't? Kids.

True, but that would be hard to do unless the comic guys know the entire season's script months in advance (which they usually don't since that is most likely a whole other department).
Sooner or later things will get screwed up between the two continuity-wise, so it's better to look at it as a side-story of sorts.
Let's say for example, the comic brings Spider Bytes back, which would be his 'second appearance'. Ten to one whenever he does return in the cartoon, that will be his 'official second appearance' and he will be after revenge after the events of Turtle Temper' and completely disregard whatever happened in the comics.
Another example would have been something seeming outdated compared to the cartoon being aired that same month. Let's say two episodes down the line Karai got mutated. Some two-part story coming out that month with a human Karai would already seem outdated since she's a mutant in the show. Similar to how in the first issue, I would assume April is living with her aunt, while in the show she'll probably be stuck in the sewers for a few episodes. Or would she have even started her kunoichi training and being armed with a fan at that point?
Sooner or later they have to change things up or go their own route, which is kinda cool because it gives them the chance to go routes the cartoons won't. Maybe Bishop will never be in the cartoon... he might be in the comic. Maybe Bebop and Rocksteady can finally be in the comic. Anything can happen, set within the same general Nick universe, but with different routes the cartoon won't go.

If what you're saying is true, I'd prefer it to be a "Tales of the TMNT" type book that can influence what happens down the line in the actual show, but take place in between episodes that have already aired, so that it never feels "out-dated."

I still think the industry needs to reconsider how it tabulates sales to accommodate people who wait for trades, though. They're not going away, and a lack of monthly purchases doesn't necessarily mean they're not reading.
The monthly comics pay for the overhead. Some (ongoing) series have not collected issues due to lower sales ("Why spend more money?")
The line of thought with some is that digital may change the paradigm again, and cause less to be collected automatically. (ie, if it sell well, yes! Collect it! If it's mediocre but still okay, people can play catch-up digitally.) I don't know if things will go that way; it could just as easily go the route of setting trade-waiters up to pre-purchase a given trade earlier in the process, so their money would carry more weight much sooner.
We'll see!
Edited to add: this stuff is just what I've heard over the years! Other comics pros (writers, artists, and editors) have shared many the above thoughts, I'm just aggregating them for ya! (:

I can't afford to collect the single issues and the trades (even if I could afford to, I couldn't justify it) but I still buy the single issues each month and then just sell them off to get my money back when the trades come out, usually they sell to overseas buyers. So everyone wins that way.
I can get behind your way of doing it, Cipher, but since the trades are so reasonable in price, I feel that anyone who waits six months to read four consecutive issues is just cheap and not really supporting the franchise, there is only one member I know of like that here, but I won't name names :tlol:

Call me conservative, but I feel that the IDW series has some themes aren't really suitable for kids. Adults should be enjoying the show, even more so than we did the ones before it, but kids shouldn't really be reading the current IDW run. Having read the entire FBCD book already, I can say honestly that it is a lot of fun, but the majority of people who read it are going to be hardcores/completists and parents who watch the show with their kids, but don't necessarily read the on-going IDW comic that already has 20+ issues and several spin-off micro-series.

Just finished reading it. I thought it was great! The writing felt like the show and the artwork was fantastic. It was really interesting to see the Turtles react to the new weapons, and it was cool to see them use those weapons in different ways to throw off Stockman's drones. Poor Donnie... I've only just started getting caught up on the Nick TMNT show. Only through episode 9, in fact. I've been enjoying the cartoon, though, and Burnham really seemed to capture all the characters and their voices (he's good at that).
The story, and I dunno if this was intentional or not, was kinda nicked from an episode of the 4Kids cartoon. But that episode did the "swap weapons to defeat Baxter's robot that's copied our moves" gag as a last minute resolution that came and went in a few seconds. Here, Burnham used the scenario as the focal point of the whole story, so I he definitely got more out of it than the 4Kids episode did. And a lot of the jokes where the Turtles kept messing up with their new weapons were pretty good.
And Dario Brizuela! I loved that guy's work on Tales of the TMNT Vol. 2. Always a pleasure to see him again.

My comic shop didn't have ANYTHING I was looking for....I asked the guy where the TMNT (and the Sonic/Mega Man comics) were, and he told me those have been guy for a while. I proceeded to ask him what he meant by that, as I got there at 11:00, the time the shop opened on Saturdays according to their website, and he told me they opened up a half hour earlier. Wish they would've said that on their website or something, I was so pissed off, and I still am, in fact. So anyway, I have this thing where If I don't find something I'm looking for in a store or whatever, I have to go and buy something to cheer myself up, so I went to TRU, and they had the first issue of the Sonic/Mega Man crosser, so I bought that :) Anyway, when is this TMNT comic supposed to hit stores? Surprisingly enough the Turtles borrowing each others weapons and trying to use them was only ever done that one time in the 4kids series. When you stop to think about it, it is strange it didn't have more frequently or in either the original toon or Mirage comics.
It's a concept that's very interesting. Seeing Mike try to swing swords, Don using Sai's or stuff like that.
My only hope for this Nick comic is it tries to stay in continuity with the cartoon and doesn't do a plotline that heavily contradicts what's going in in the episodes. I want this to feel like "lost episodes" of the show.

Got this today as part of what was basically the best comic-shop experience (customer-service-wise) of my life.
I came in at 4 p.m. when they'd been cleaned out of most of their FCBD stock. The owner knows I'm a Turtles fan from a few previous visits, so he gave me the copy he'd saved for himself. And while I was there, I managed to find the long-out-of-print "Leonardo: Blind Sight" trade for $12. Insane!
Anyway, the issue was really fun and made a great precursor to the rest of the series. The character voices were dead on, and I chuckled at Mike explaining his strategy against the robot -- felt exactly like one of the funnier moments in the actual cartoon. Props to Erik!
And although it's anecdotal, the store owner here said this was one of the quickest-moving titles of the day, both among kids and adults who were like, "Oh, hey! Turtles!" and picked it up out of curiosity.

Careful, careful...you can't just go throwing out things like "anecdotal" with out explaining what that means. I guarantee you, within a week, the speed that comic shop ran out of copies you describe will somewhere on this board be quoted as law when describing the "success" of this new comic series.
Anecdotal
1. Based on casual observations or indications rather than rigorous or scientific analysis.
2. Based on incidental observations or reports rather than systematic evaluation.

Man, I'm starting to feel pretty lucky to have gotten my hands on it. My local shop actually had quite a stack still by the time I picked it up - maybe I'm just in a TMNT dead zone because there were PLENTY of people! Waited in line for about an hour and a half (which was fine by me as it gave me a chance to catch up with a friend of mine - guess I should have had her pick one up too; she only came to keep me company, lol).
I was sad to find they only had trades 3 and 4 of the new IDW series though. I was thinking I'd pick up at least the 1st one if I saw it.
I enjoyed the free comic. It was a fun little story and felt very much in tune with the Nick version of the characters. There were a lot of funny moments, and it makes me interested to see what other stories come out of this series.

Excuse me if this has been posted, I haven't gone through the 4 pages.
Were there variant or altered covers released? I did an eBay (http://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=TMNT%20New%20Animated%20Adventures&clk_rvr_id=476135930765) search and pulled up atleast 2 different covers.

It was a great issue, Erik really nailed the character dynamic and dialog amongst the turtles perfectly, and the art was gorgeous. Can't wait for this new ongoing in July!
I got to give IDW props, I think they had the best FCBD book line-up of any of the publishers, with this totally new material in the Turtles book, and then reprinting some fan favorite Judge Dredd vs. Judge Death stories that I would guess most FCBD goers have never laid eyes on. They really picked some great progs to reprint.
It sure beats the Superman book from DC, which reprinted some pages from the Johns/Dinner/Liberty Last Son story which is no longer even in DCU continuity, thanks to the New 52.
Odd choice on their part.

Image also reprinted The Walking Dead.
I havn't had a chance to look at my FCBD collection, aside from the TMNT. Looking through the Walking Dead book revealed to me the Michonne Special's "origin" is present in this book. I need to look at the pages more but it looks like there might be new pages after she walks away from the city with her new pet zombies. In her special, those pages were new and then it bled into the main characters finding the Prison and eventually meeting Michonne.
Anyways, similar to Superman in that they are reprinted pages or collected from other stories.
I'm eager to check out Judge Dredd, I never had a chance to really follow his comics and it's hard to track backissues. Even the collected books are kind of steep in price for me right now.
But I agree with what has been said: The TMNT book was solid. stylistically it's not my favorite of the Turtle books but it works well and it compliments the new show's CG look. The writing was good and I liked the concept of the Turtles getting cocky and Splinter knocking them down by "handicapping" them. I dont think this is an idea or concept used before. However, it is true as far as learning the martial arts are. You can't be a master of, say, ninjitsu. You can be a master at a certain style and you can be a master of sai (which is not really a ninja weapon but still) but that doesn't make you a weapons expert. Either way, it was a good concept and a good read so I'm very happy I managed to grab a book before they were gone.
But I am still curious about my earlier question dealing with different covers...

Woah I had not realized this before...I picked up a couple copies off eBay mine are both like this cover, the one with Splinter and Raph appearing closest.

I emailed Dario to ask him.
*edit*
He thinks they only made the one cover but isn't 100% sure, said the other cover (one without splinter with Leo closest) is sample art he did that IDW owns.
So im still not 100% sure they didn't print both but I think there's just the one cover because of what Dario said and the fact there several actual pictures of the cover with Splinter for sale on eBay but the other cover seems to be all the same stock photo.

Erick, please know I dutifully pay my 3.99 every month for Ghostbusters; it's the best book on the shelf, IMO!

Just saw the preview for this week's episode "Pulverizer Returns" and I couldn't believe how similar the scene was to the FCBD comic! Even Mikey's little line of dialogue was the same!

Yep.. already the comic and cartoon are starting to contradict themselves. Both instances the Turtles act as if Splinter suggested it for the first time. That's why I'm gonna sit back and enjoy the comic, but not really tie it into the cartoon's continuity.

Finally got a hold of this (thanks Master Splinter!) and quite enjoyed it. Had no problem hearing the characters voices in my head as I read along. The characters feel right, the dialogue is just right (it's easy to make the turtles seem corny, especially in the universes more kid-oriented, so good job there) and the art is really rad. I kinda wish they'd have their colored pupils rather than the black dots, but that's a minor nitpick. I definitely want this to turn into its own full series like Archie's TMNT Adventures.

I also picked one up from Free Comic Book Day. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet but it looked really fun and enjoyable. I also went ahead and bought Mirage's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics #10 too. It always feels good to get a TMNT comic.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to FCBD so will have to source a copy else where....hopefully I can find it without the $12-$15 shipping.
Do you think if it gets released in trade that this issue would be part of it?

Finally got it in the mail the other day and thought it was fantastic. Very funny and mostly true to the tone of the show. I laughed out loud at least 3 times, so props to Burnham. Definitely love having him around the TMNT so much these days.
Kind of bummed that it was pretty much ruled non-canon a week after it's release. I personally thought that the book did a much better job with the weapons swap gag than the show itself though. However, if it was in continuity I guess it would have to take place before "Mousers Attack"? I'll have to give it another read.
Anyways, there was a lot to love about this and I'm glad I finally have another book to get excited about every month!

Really liked the issue. It's a very refreshing story, laughed my ass off on two or three scenes.:tlol:
Though it was a kinda pain in the neck to get a copy in Germany, I've managed to do so. Glad I did.

There are copies on ebay but its the shipping that makes them unreasonable.
I'm in Canada and $15-$20 shipping for a $4 book is rediculous to me
Was hoping someone on here might have a more reasonable shipping proposal

I know it's ridiculous, but... that's about what shipping costs between US and Canada these days... $12 is as low as it goes.
With LUCK... if Diamond does another October FCBD, maybe this will see a reprint? We can hope!

I shipped one to TheCanadianDrome and exact shipping was around $8.50. The book had to be ordered from eBay, as I didn't have the means to go to Free Comic Book Day.
