here are a couple of NECAish styled Foot Soldiers. while i really liked the prototypes NECA made, i wanted to do something different. NECA used the color schemes from the FIRST colorized trade paperback which was colored by Steve Lavigne. i found it interesting that Steve also colorized the 2009 #1 reprint, but had done very differently. for instance the Foot wore maroon and light gray uniforms in the FIRST issue, but wore dark navy/black uniforms in the 2009 issue. black i understand, maroon i get because it the clan's color, but light gray seems counter productive for a person needing to be stealthy. i decided to make them maroon similar to how Eastman painted them on the fourth reprint of #1. the fourth print was published in September 1985. the FIRST tpb was published in November 1986. since Kevin's cover was done first, it leads me to believe he intended the Foot to wear all maroon.

Awesome! I wish they'd made some of these. Your color scheme is accurate too! The only other mirage color content I've seen of the foot ninjas was the covers of the City at War issues, where the foot are wearing what appears to be purple and maroon, but those colors could be an effect of the lighting used on those covers(if that makes any sense).
What was your base figure on these?

Amazing as usual man, you nailed the look and the color scheme. And those nick weapons fit really well too.

They look like they're pissed that mike's hogging arcade, but that's a 4 player cabinet! Hop on in guys!

Ooh, lovely. Personally I prefer the grey & maroon outfits (those First TPBs were my first exposure to the TMNT), but you've done a bang-up job.

thanks jon! the figure is from the now defunct legendary heroes line. i think his name was star man or something like that.

yeah, the nick weapons looked really nice with these guys. thaks :)

thanks matt! your love for the other color is totally understandable. as you can see i opted for no tunic. i wanted to stay accurate with the style/color used in my reference. the tunic was only drawn in the first issue and not used since. i loved the neca foot soldier you did a while back. it was part of my inspiration to get off my butt and make some foot of my own :)

Those look fantastic, PP... even if you did sacrifice the ab crunch (and possibly the shoulder pivots?). Really nice way to distinguish your Foot Soldiers by using that obscure color scheme, too!

That said, it looks so nice that I think I might have to borrow it whenever I get around to doing another Foot Soldier. ;)

Amazing work. I don't have any critiques to point out. They just look great, in my opinion even better than the NECA protos.

Thanks wes! I've found that sometimes sacrificing the ab crunch in order to improve the overall sculpt makes a cooler custom. Honestly, I've very early, if ever, even use the ab crunch when posing my figures.

Wow that's a huge compliment. Thanks Rob! (im guessing that's your real name)

Thanks everyone for checking out my work and taking the time to comment :)

thanks everyone! i too wish the neca line had continued. their designs were amazing and it would have fulfilled the tmnt dream team of action figures that fans always clamor for.

I'm curious, whats the secret to getting that finish that matches with neca so well?

I assume you are putting a clear coat or some type of protection over the paiint job. My original guess was just using flat paints, but after realizing you probably protect it, how do you avoid making it a gloss?

thank you.
nope. i just use flat paints. i used a sealer for a while, but it didnt seem to add much (if any) protection. i tested the "sealed" figures and they scratched just as easily the non sealed figures. the only real benefit i see to the sealer is that they help protect against fingerprints. but custom toys are meant more for display anyway so the point is moot. also, the sealler (even the flat ones) seemed to leave a slight gloss on the figures.

as far as matching goes, the things one needs to remember is to not only match the color, but the textures and layering too. most people only focus on the color.

thanks jester :)
