View Full Version : [Suggestion] Restriction of animated gif sizes

This has gotten out of control and needs the staff to step in and implement a filesize restriction.

I'm seeing threads like here: http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=44207 and http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=44156 where people have a 3+MB animated gift as their signatures. That's just complete excess/overkill and slows down my viewing of the forums.

A max filesize of 500k-800k range I think would be very fair. If people want them so badly they can easily slim down the length, size, and quality of the clip to fit under that limit.

Thank you for your time.

I'm with you on that, there's way too many gifs slowing things down in threads as a result of them being used excessively in sigs.

Examples:

His: 3.5 MBs

Same image scaled/quality reduced: 650k

It doesn't slow my viewing of the forums down at all...

Not everyone has super fast internet. And if that person has several posts on a page, it can drag Everything down...

People definitely need to watch their signature sizes.

Any response from the staff on this? I'm sure there are vBulliten mods that can check a person's signature for sizes and restrict ones above a certain filesize.

Actually, Machias Banshee is staff. (As am I)

I agree that the animated GIFs can be out of hand and they should probably go. When one of us has a chance we'll either message people about their sigs or remove them if they go over the limit. As for vBullentin mods, Krang prefers not to install many as it makes the forums less secure and adds more ways for hackers to get in, so we'll just have to do this the old fashion way.

In that case, might I suggest a stickied thread in this forum called 'Report Signature Violations Here' where people can give a username and example post? That way staff only have to check 1 thread for any new reports.

It's simple but effective.

I think sending a multiple PM to Krang and the mods using the " ; " in the recipient box is better. This way no one feels targeted.

They wouldn't feel targeted, and besides, it's not like they are being personally persecuted, they are just being notified that their sig is too big.

Believe me, they would feel targeted. Most people here want to get their ass pat.

I'd be happy if we actually enforced the rules about images in signatures already in place. So many people still have HUGE images that mess up the formatting of the fixed width option.

We don't need a thread like this. If you want to be the forum police, that's fine. But let's keep this to private messages.
