Hello Dear Tmnt Followers, Back in 1993 playing homage to the worldwide famous Universal Studios Monsters, the Scariest versions of our beloved four Green Teens came out .

Introducing Leo as The Wolfman, Mike as Frankenstein, Raph as The Mummy and Don as Dracula. Perhaps many would think that this was too much “franchise abuse” for the original toyline or maybe we gave up collecting after the 1992 Bodacious Birthday Turtles came out.
However, I donīt think this was a mistake in my view, because it played a homage to the classic monsters and Playmates show us again in terms of sculpt why there were the best.

As for the carboard art, I would have made the classic unique three illustrations for each one , with a theme background (a Pyramid, Transylvania Castle, full moon and a laboratory). Maybe this four terrifying should enter in the custom cardboard that I have talked in this thread:
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=45576

This first set of four figures could glow in the dark and their accessories got four colours variants.

Letīs start with the Wolman himself: Leonardo

Leo as The Wolfman was an example of how far in terms of sculpt Playmates went, the hairy look, the fangs, all made it the perfect version of the Wolfman in the Tmnt world.

The accessories were a Boney Kantana, Wolfhead Cane, Fiendish Foot Trap and a Silver Bullet-shootin' Gun (love that it came with two things that can stop him and end his “wolfman curse” forever).

The Second of this Universal Studios Monsters Series I would like to show you is Mike as Frankenstein, In my opinion, this figure was perfect in every detail, take a good look to Mikeyīs face, you could see the pain he is suffering, love the hump too.

http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o760/Martha0301/FRANK_zps633a4ecb.jpg (http://s1341.photobucket.com/user/Martha0301/media/FRANK_zps633a4ecb.jpg.html)

The accessories were really good and included a Bolt-handled Nunchachaku , Pain-chain Shackle, Beastly Beaker and a Flamin' Torch Club (can you imagine Mikey burning in flames with this last one?).

The third figure of this series is Raphael as The Mummy. I believe it was an awesome figure and the creepiest of all four. Imagine having this figure when we were kids, glowing in the dark staring to us…goosebumps.

The accessories were Two Cobra Sais, Stone Dagger; Kid-sized Egyptian Ring (love the fact that a couple of Turtles of this first set of Monsters came with something that could be used for any kid over that time).
This figure got two variants (with and without paint on chest)

Finally the cherry of the pie: the Prince of Darkness himself…Don as Dracula. Could anyone imagine someone so good at heart like Donny ending in the most evil classic and blood thirsty monster ? Not me. The figure was just prime, the cape, the hair, all was perfect.

The accessories were: Batty Bo, Wrist Wrappin' Bat Buddy (a companion again), Kid-sized Bat Medallion and a Wacky Wooden Stake.

The Universal Studios Monsters Turtles never appeared in the original tv show but I believe it could have been used in Hallowen Special or in an episode where there īs a curse and the Tmnt transforms into the classic monsters.

I loved these as a kid. The sculpts were by far the best parts of these figures and who doesn't love glow in the dark toys? Cool write up as usual btw.

I absolutely love this set.
I'm a huge fan of Classic Universal Monster Movies.
I remember back in the 70s (yes, I'm that old !!) watching Friday night double bills on my BW TV and having the old Aurora Glow monster kits. I was rubbish at painting, so my mate (who was brilliant at painting) did my Dracula for me. It was really well done. I kept that almost forever, but it got lost or broken just before I moved over to China.
Anyways, the TMNT. I have the two sets of figures hanging in the toy room (I will take a pic when I get home) and was very pleased when I managed to get them a couple of years ago.
I think I found the second set first then, I got the first set (The one above).
The sculpts are excellent, and the mirage, I mean marriage of the two designs (Turtles and monsters) is done very well.
I don't have a favourite, as I like them all, and each is executed with the same high level of production values.
I would be loathed to remove these from the packs, as those are beautiful. They may not be unique, but they are vibrant and really sell this awesome set.
Thanks for the upload, and the opportunity to discuss these monstrously cool Turtle dudes.

Mummy Raph was my first Ninja Turtle figure, I'll never forget it because it was the first gift I got outside of holidays. My Dad didn't need to stop by the toy store on his way home from work, but he did and I will never forget his generosity.

I remember waking up in the middle of the night and watching it emit that awesome green glow. I was amazed because I had never seen a glowing toy before. In fact, for awhile I thought I imagined it until I told my Mom and she explained to me how glow in the dark toys work.

Good times.

As a horror fan, I love these figures. I have a loose set of these and the second series as well, the only turtle variants I really dig. Glow in the dark just add to the coolness factor.

Excellent write up as always!:tthumbsu:

:o The glow in the dark effect is spooky... apart from that, useless figure variants to collect for me !

Being a fan of the Universal Monsters stuff, I dug these figures. My favorite though came later, with the Creature from the Black Lagoon Leo. The Creature has been my favorite Universal Monster, so it was an easy sell. I finally was able to get one MIB.

YES! A Bill topic! Thanks Bill!

My favorite's a toss-up between Mummy-Raph and Leo-Wolf. Such great sculpting on those.

Toys like these make you realize Playmates could make GOOD Turtle variants, as in ones that are actually awesome and you wanted to buy.

It's a shame stuff like this was rare and instead we got garbage like Clown Leonardo, Fireman Donatello, and Farmer Mike.

A Monster Mikey came with the collection I bought back in 2010-11, I really like the looks on him. I'm usually not a fan of turtle variants and silly costumes but figures like these are fantastic.

The glowing effects on this first series really set them apart! I absolutely love Wolfman Leo, and Mummy Raph is close behind as my second favorite of this bunch.
