View Full Version : [Suggestion] Enforcement of sig rules not being followed

GodzFire

I have to open another thread about this, because still nothing has been done about this problem.

Certain people's sigs are out of control. There are people with 2-3 different large size sigs, and/or people with gigantic moving gif sigs which are 2-5 MEGS each. Some of us are forced to use wireless that doesn't have a T1 bandwidth to it, and these things are just killing my viewing experience because I can't load any pages or threads!

I've already made 2 other posts about this in the past, with a few users agreeing with me and calling for change, however both times this '愛' person has come in and locked them in dictatorship fashion.

Suggestions were made to report the users who violate the sig sizes, which I have now done for the past 1-2 months. NOTHING has been done. I haven't received a single reply they received my reports, or they were looked into. The same sigs remain.

Like I said in the second thread I created to try and discuss things, I don't want to be the forum police. A user shouldn't have to do the work of the staff.

My solution is a simple rule change: "A signature cannot contain more than 1 large graphical image and cannot be over 1MB in filesize". That's it. Problem solved.

Thank you for your time. I hope we can have a mature discussion on how to fix this problem.

I have also openly complained about this and have been reporting users, and, as GodzFire has said, still nothing is being done. I don't understand why this is such an impossible thing to get enforced.

Yeah, same here, Rose.

I've also tried time & time again to stress the importance of spoilering images if you're gonna quote a post with them in it... Krang said he could implement something that did it automatically but I haven't heard back from them about anything in ages. Hope all is well...

Machi & GK are the only mods who seem to actually do stuff. Venom's good too, but he's sectional.

Co-sign. I can't stand the animated gif signatures. They slow down my browser and ruin any sort of mobile experience. This isn't Tumblr.

I could swear Krang decided up up the limit on gif and sig sizes, but I Know he's been busy and hasn't updated the rules to reflect it yet. I don't want to go around him so before I make any moves on it I'd like to hear from him on the matter.

Sorry, I know that I'm one of the people who have two GIFs in my sig. I guess I'll remove one if it slows down some peoples browsers.

Thanks for doing that, however I still think gifs should not be allowed period... Think about it, if you have posted in a thread several times that gif is going to load that many times on a single page, and then it just keeps animating, making things in my opinion look like a mess and slow things down. Compund that with other users who have gifs in their sig and you have a bandwidth and memory resource hog.

I have no problem with gif sigs as they can be really fun and imaginative to see, however we just need size restrictions on them.

1 total at 500k-1mb in size I think is fair.

yours is 768Kb :).

the only time i have an issue with gifs is when i browse the forum on my phone when i'm on break at work. then they start to eat up my data plan fairly quickly. best solution would to if we could somehow turn off signatures for those that dislike them. but since i don't know how the forum is set up not sure if thats do able.

Yes, you're right. The most recent post I could find about the topic was this one, so let's go with 600KB as the new limit.

I agree with both the size limit and limiting the dimensions of sigs to something that everyone can live with. In terms of the dimensions, I feel that a sig needs to be able to seen but not so big that it jumps out too much at people and becomes a problem. But also, not too small that it cannot be seen.

It's not a matter of being a narc. It's a matter of users having multiple postings of HUGE sig files; it can distort how a page loads, slow down the efficiency of the forum, and freeze someone's internet connection.

It's not the end of the world if someone asks you to adjust your signature. Just shrink down the file size, and you'll be fine.. :)

The big thing for me isn't the actual physical dimensions of the sig, it's the FILESIZE of an animated gif. That's what kills my browser and causes pages to lag out.

Like xChri5x's gif sig here, it's 2 MBs (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1294064&postcount=17)

How about setting an official filesize limit for animated gifs in avatars/sigs? How about 500k?

This is true. I missed out on at least a month's worth of PMs for some reason. I've checked all my options and rechecked my email. I only JUST started receiving PMs again. (2 since August 5th.)

And yes, life has been very busy in my corner of the world. I only get onto the forums for an hour or two a night if I'm lucky.

We used to have a size limit on sigs, but people complained that it wasn't big enough *see my sig below*. We can have Krang put it back into place. I don't have any problem with the dimensions of image sigs, it seems everyone is following the general rule and keeping theirs small. Plus those don't even phase an internet connection. It's the animated gifs that are the problem.

I think I have a solution. Is it possible to not allow animated items in sigs, but allow them in avatars? If people want to use an animated avatar, I think that would be fine since you can set filesize limits easily on those.

What do you think?

Roseangelo
08-10-2014, 11:20 AM
Well, I do have a problem with the dimensions of some sig images, which is what I've been targeting. Height usually isn't a problem, but anything wider than 720 pixels throws the forum out of whack.

Also, I think there should be a limit of 1 image in a sig.

Netkeeper

I'm curious, sig rules made sense when you had 56k modems or when the resolution of monitors wasn't that great but I've yet ot have a problem with a sig in any of my computers, 7" tablet and even my iphone, I don't know why you're having so many problems with sigs. Damn, I'm unsure how that even happens.

What I see (http://i.imgur.com/WMdaoAW.jpg) [big image; my window appears to be narrower than your resolution, strangely?]

Also, we should probably spoiler mark these images. I think in this unique case it'd be best to let Zarius know the issues regarding the sig on different resolutions and see if those extra images could be taken out since there's a link to the same thing in the text anyway, so it's a bit redundant.

BubblyShell22

GodzFire
08-11-2014, 01:50 PM
While annoying, that's not the problem for me. The problem for me is the forums not even loading properly because of high bandwidth gif sigs like this:

A_Little_Too_Raph.9859: http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/member.php?u=11859
(Click his about me tab)

He has two animated gifs, 890k and 1.4mbs. I messaged him asking him to please reduce his sig filesize to a total of 600k and he came back saying: "I was told they were fine....hard to know who to believe around here"

If you go to Edit Signature and look under Signature Permissions there are two options: Can Upload Images for Signature and Can Upload Animated GIF for Signature. Ironically, for some reason mine are force turned off, even though I never had an animated gif in my sig, or even a large image sig.

Look, something needs to be done about this, someone from the staff needs to step up and make a change. Again, can 'Can Upload Animated GIF for Signature' be disabled on everyone's account?

Roseangelo
08-11-2014, 02:42 PM
The main point is that we can never know what everyone's browsing settings/abilities are, and we need to define and enforce standards. People should be limited to 1 image and that image needs to be within limits on dimensions and file size. This should be a simple thing, and it's extemely reasonable. Why can't we just do this?

Jester
08-11-2014, 02:58 PM
Man, that's a lot of margin space. What causes those major gaps on the side?

Netkeeper
08-11-2014, 03:12 PM
I slightly disagree and feel that a user can have any number of images in the signature as long as it doesn't exceed a specified combined pixel width/height AND combined file size. A person could have five tiny images or one big one as long as they fit under the designated limits.

Personal opinion? I feel text and images combined shouldn't exceed over 300 pixels in height, and 600 pixels in width. That is more than enough room for a damn signature.
http://i.imgur.com/kgHBFlv.png

I don't have a slow computer or internet connection so I don't feel qualified to comment on file size, but the biggest signature I personally have ever used was around 200 kb and was a decent quality animated gif. The current rules state 300 kb, so maybe bumping that limit up to 500? That's half a ****ing meg, if you can't crop or resize your gif in Photoshop to make the file size smaller than THAT, just PM it to me or something and I'll do it if it means less ******** signatures on the board.

GodzFire
08-11-2014, 03:31 PM
I say animated gifs allowed in avatars only (where their physical dimensions and filesize can easily be set and enforced) and a limit of 1 non-animated static image in a sig.

Sound agreeable?

Hey guys/girls - if my sig is causing any problems for any of you with your viewing/bandwidth, please let me know and I'll be happy to change it. :)

EDIT: Shrank it down a bit anyway, just in case. :)

That was pretty light compared to some I've seen, so barely any worries there...

Man, that's a lot of margin space. What causes those major gaps on the side?

The forum actually has an option to view it in a fixed width, and I prefer it this way.

Actually I'm well aware Krang is just one person. That's the problem. This place is understaffed if you subtract the staff members who haven't been around in months. And Shredder hasn't been around for over a year now.

*sigh* 11 days later and not a single reply from a staff member. In the meantime I still can't access the forums normally because of people with sigs like this: http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1336673&postcount=5 and http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1337212&postcount=18

Seriously, this is getting out of hand.

Good god. Why would somebody even put that in their signature?

Maybe the photoshoppers should start opening up sig shops just to encourage use of those instead of gifs.

Sorry, Godzfire, I've personally not been around lately due to personal projects. And I know Venom and Jester have been pretty busy dealing with fighting in the movie section...

As for the animated gifs, those definitely need to be curtailed. I've sent requests for people to reduce the sizes or change their images. I don't like just going into someone's signature and removing things without talking to them first... that's a last resort.

You know, not everyone has the same screen settings. And I think that is the #1 probably people aren't realizing.

Here is was Zarius's sig looks like on my DESKTOP. It takes up the FULL HEIGHT.

This is still ridiculous.

The sentiment is definitely appreciated Machias, however people are just going to keep doing them because without clear guidelines and rules there's nothing to enforce them.

Take a look at these options in the Edit Sig section:

For some reason, the last two on the right have been force set to NO for me, however I am curious if everyone else's is like this as well. if not, how about a test switching the bottom one about Animated GIFs to NO for everyone and see if that works? If it does, then if people want to use animated gifs, they can in their avatar, where there ARE configurable dimension and size limits.

Those permissions only apply to uploading images for your signature directly to the forum, not inserting an [img] bbcode, which of course makes no distinction between animated and non-animated images. The only way to force getting rid of gifs would be to axe image bbcode altogether and that's not what anyone wants, I don't think.

However, yes, there do need to be firm rules put into place regarding signatures and I believe you can edit the signature control panel file to remind users of those rules as they are editing the signature [you could do that with phpbb2, I don't see why one couldn't do it with vbulletin 3.8.7].

I've done just that. Makes the board less colourful, but at least I'm only seeing what matters. :)

That's like saying "If you're having a bug problem, just bulldoze down the house". It's a scorched earth approach. 95% of the people are just fine, and I like seeing other people's sigs.

They are 1&2+ MBs in size. For those of us forced to use wireless and less than ideal connections, it screws up loading the page.

It's funny, I just looked through this thread today and noticed that one of the linked threads at the start someone mentioned my old signature. The funny bit is that before I used it I actually ran my sig by Krang who said it was fine. Weird.

Meh, I browse the drome on my mobile devices and an old computer, and I run default settings and I have no huge problems with sigs here unlike in other forums. I also have no problems with file sizes usually. Sure there's some signatures that annoy me but that's irrelevant, I'm not going to complain to my neighbor because he has an obnoxious mailbox that I hate. To me this isn't a huge issue, more along the likes of people having "booty" signatures that people complained about what was it 10 years ago now? (wow!) and those stayed. I mean we all have different likes. Personally any sig much bigger than mine currently is, I already find somewhat obnoxious which includes most people in this thread complaining about sigs but I'm not going to bitch about it.

Really, If it's such a problem why not turn off sigs in your settings? It's not like you'll be missing out on much.

HE likes seeing the 98% of the people's sigs who don't have a problem, and appreciate the ones who created their own.

lindz247 has gifs stacked on top of one another that more or less make their posts take up the whole screen. They need to be put side by side or have one subtracted altogether.

Don't link images from Facebook. Upload the image to http://imgur.com/ and use the assigned image link in your sig.
