If I had 5% of the talent some of you lucky folks have I'd try my hand at painting, but instead I have my buddy heymilt do it for me.

For a better sense of the extent to which heymilt transformed these toys, compare Mikey's unpainted neck peg in the following photo to the rest of his skin:

There's no way I could follow that, so I contented myself with gathering unlikely accessories and vehicles for my badass Turtles.

First off, while they can't fit inside to utilize the turret bubble, the Turtles look pretty cool with the Acid Rain Stronghold, which is so convincingly weathered right out of the box (similar to 3A's World War Robot rust aesthetic) that it looks like something one would put together from assorted scraps and debris in a sewer, so...

I reckon it's an all-purpose sewer transport, but the fact that it transforms into a robot mode could also suggest it's an updated approach to Metalhead.

More unlikely choices from the 1:18 scale: the RDA Grinder from James Cameron's Avatar and G.I. Joe Retaliation Firefly's sled:

I've also been putting together lots of accessories, both because I want to maybe try to build a custom sewer eventually and just for the hell of it. In the next post you'll see some random weapons and things, plus a work-in-progress science lab station.

And a very recent addition to my vehicle fleet, in the form of a garden toy I bought in Istanbul a few years ago for my Joes. Since it's designed to rest in a garden it's not a proper toy; there's no way to open it, so I can't place the Turtles inside, and they wouldn't fit in the front seats even if I could. But for background fodder it looks pretty cool.

THAT VAN!! Ohh la la... So classic

Thanks! And for a lazy kitbasher like me, it was perfect, 'cause setting aside the fact that I can't place the Turtles inside it, it required no modification.

Found art has always been my favorite breed of "custom". :)

Thanks, Connor!

Can I ask: are TMNT figures readily available in Glasgow? I only ask because I traveled extensively for a few years, and it was always fascinating to see which toys were available in a given place. At the time I was mostly hunting G.I. Joe figures, and I assume TMNT is much more widely available than Joes. (For some reason, the most dominant toy everywhere I went was Ben 10).

My most surreal find was this pair of G.I. Joe Sigma 6 figures:

Sweet find :)

TMNT toys are pretty common place in Glasgow, it used to be you could only really get them in comic shops initially (wayyy back first time round) but with the recent incarnations its pretty easy. spotted the stelth turtles going for cheap in a local B&M store* just not had any cash to buy them :(

That's cool that you have access; I know how discouraging it can be to live vicariously through friends online 'cause there are no toys within a hundred miles!

Meanwhile, I aim to slowly (ever so slowly) put together a gargantuan sewer lair for my Turtles. It's something I've thought about off and on for many years.

For the bare-bones structure of my sewer lair I intend to get some lightweight plywood "walls" and attach them to a thicker "floor" piece to create a simple room with three walls and no ceiling, much like the 2003 Sewer Lair, only considerably larger.

If I can figure out how to perform some basic weathering tricks I will dirty up these wooden bits as thoroughly as I can, but first I'll hit them with some of that spray paint that's textured. I'm hoping it'll look convincingly concrete-like.

I also hope to add some long, narrow pieces of PVC pipe to the walls. I'll probably paint the pipes to make 'em look rusty... this is, again, assuming I somehow learn to do any of this stuff with anything resembling competence.

Meanwhile, I'm already gathering secondary structure pieces.

First up, I bought the G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Pit/Mobile Command Center thing a few years ago as a poor substitute for all the bigass, badass playsets I missed out on when I was a lad... and the thing has just been gathering dust, so I'm taking it apart and using its pieces as random electrical sheds and panels and whatnot.

These, too, will benefit immensely from some weathering, but one can already get a sense of the potential, I think:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5596/14723356339_6c8e5c0d98.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3849/14723330510_40e36c5b0e.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3917/14909647082_1bc06d6d4e.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5586/14723438867_9e0361af53.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3842/14723437507_059d2fcde4.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5583/14887012216_ccfcef2817.jpg

Again, there's a surprising amount of cool texture and detail that should convincingly suggest maintenance sheds or whatever.

Meanwhile, recently at the local thrift shop I spotted a big plastic bag filled with Tech Deck skating ramps. I always wanted some of these, but never enough to pay for them... and these were only $2 for the lot. Whoo-hoo!

I'm considering using the skate ramps simply as elevated surfaces, rather than skate ramps.

Also for $2: a comically incomplete "Shellraiser" Turtle van, from the Nickelodeon cartoon. I had no interest whatsoever in this strange vehicle, but for $2, you bet I'll grab it!

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835/14723396348_af56e10b6d.jpg

The thing I dislike most is the wheels... and it occurred to me that, without the wheels, the vehicle might serve instead as yet another maintenance room or what-have-you. Again, it'll look much, much better weathered, but I like to think you can smell what I'm cooking:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5578/14906925731_a4db52e023.jpg

Here it is on its side atop a skate ramp, behind another skate ramp, and with the computer console from the Rise of Cobra Pit bringing it all together as a workstation for Donatello:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3883/14723314630_cd3275dbd2.jpg

I also paid a dollar for some random hunk of crap that had no business taking up space on the shelf (it's just a piece from some forgotten toy, and it can't possibly have any value or purpose to anyone but a dork like me):

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3874/14909636112_59c0bff809.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3845/14723337539_09a9df52ca.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835/14723377548_a41bb50abc.jpg

It too has cool details that should pop nicely with the proper weathering. I'll probably use it as part of a wall rather than the floor, although it has some tools sculpted onto its surface (I really can't imagine what the hell this thing was originally), which might look goofy stuck to a "wall".

And now a hasty look at some of the props I'll use to make the place feel lived-in. First up, a Millennium Falcon ornament I got for fifty cents:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/14909631922_c6cba6b56f.jpg

I'm gonna make a toy collector of Michelangelo, you see.

And some of the other props:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3893/14910005225_5bcdedb6dd.jpg

That's it for now, and it's likely there will be no further progress for a few months, 'cause I can't even afford to buy the spray paint and boards at the moment, and my highest priority right now is shipping more stuff to my long-suffering buddy heymilt so's he can paint it for me.

But eventually I'll build the primary structure, and along the way I'll keep an eye out for hunks of metal and such that can serve as sewer detail and debris, and someday, hopefully, I'll have a kickass lair for my Turtles!

Thought I'd share my G.I. Joes-as-TMNT-characters kitbashes and some of the McFarlane figures I use as modern versions of vintage TMNT figures.

I've posted some of these before, but I want this to be my master thread so's I can spam one thread rather than the whole forum.

First off, G.I. Joe Retaliation Jinx with a 25th Anniversary Lade Jaye head for a simple, lazy April O'Neil:

She's standing atop McFarlane's Heap figure, which I use as Muckman:

And here she is taking on Groundchuck, in the form of McFarlane's Tremor II:

Today I took my daughter's Monster High Sweet 1600 Draculaura Roadster out for a shoot. If you squint and then get really drunk and then pass out or die, it's passable as a wildly stylized take on one of the Neutrino flying cars:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5561/14907020636_d0f97eac99.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3846/14743425087_90fa6beab0.jpg

To suggest the car is floating, I simply balanced it on this barrel accessory:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5594/14907002566_f8edbcbb1d.jpg

If and when my daughter finalizes her long, drawn-out process of outgrowing Monster High, I might conduct some painting and weathering experiments on it to make it more viable.

Thank you very much! Coming from you that's high praise indeed.

Maaan, are you hijacking my brain? was thinking about the heap and poacher for those very characters Ha!

For some reason I have spent many happy hours seeking modern updates, usually from McFarlane, of vintage TMNT figures. Here's some suggestions I came up with:

http://twofistedtoytalk.wordpress.com/2012/08/19/modern-day-mutants/

Not pictured is a weirder, more recent notion: the NECA Prometheus Engineer as a new take on Krang's android body.

You can never outgrow Monster High; once you're in, you're in for life cuz that show is awesome.

I've never seen the show, oddly enough. I just saw Monster High photos on Flickr and loved the designs. Indeed, I got my daughter into them; she didn't care for them at all until I brought one home.

Alas, I learned that I hate rooted hair, so I eventually gave all my MH dolls to my daughter, who in turn recently placed them all in the garage.

Seriously, though, I would buy dozens of the damn things if they were reinterpreted as an action figure series by NECA or something (with sculpted plastic hair). A NECA Robecca Steam would be the greatest toy ever!

Two nearly identical portraits of Leonardo, both of which I felt compelled to keep because I am fascinated by how a slight tilt of the camera can leave a massive chunk of the backdrop obscured in shadow:

You really do take lovely photos. :)

Thank you! Your kind words are much appreciated.

Now then, I've got a Sewer Update: I went back to the thrift shop, and hit the jackpot!

First up, a few more skate ramps (not pictured so's I can accommodate the ten-photos-per-post rule) and some weird tiki mask thing, not particularly exciting but potentially useful as a prop in Mikey's room:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5572/15002414791_8409079bf6.jpg

Next, a giant friggin' race track, also not exactly thrilling, and I probably would have opted not to spend five bucks on it if I'd had a clearer sense of what it was (it was all wrapped up in a baggie; I thought maybe there would be other parts besides the track, but no luck), but I might incorporate a few pieces into the sewer setup:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3850/14819015627_951a6c79f8.jpg

More relevant to the sewer project is this goofy but charming Fisher Price tower:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5586/15002431671_8f5da3c12f.jpg

And best of all, for a whopping four dollars I nabbed all of the following (as well as the skate ramps and tiki item at the start of this post):

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3917/14818863470_659dcc51db.jpg

Bigass skate pool!

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3881/15005523775_944aa038aa.jpg

Mysterious Hot Wheels thing! It's about as random and nonsensical as can be, but the basketball hoop alone makes it worth the four dollars.

Man... the scale of this thing is getting out of hand. Also, the more cool items I find, the steeper the burden of accountability; I kinda feel like I can't back out now.

I just hope I don't screw it all up once I start trying to paint!

I find it easier to paint props, settings and such, versus figure repaints, plus it's alot more fun in my opinion. I hate painting figures, I like piecing them together mind you, but I love painting buildings, walls and such.

That makes sense. If you're weathering a wall, a bit of slop here and there will just look like more weathering. I am in awe of people who paint the eyes on tiny G.I. Joe heads, but hopefully I won't mess up giant props in a sewer playset too badly.

Monte, where are the Leonardo katanas from?

Others have asked before, and unfortunately I can't remember their origin. I'll say this, though: what they boast in aesthetics they lose in functionality; the hilts are too narrow to rest firmly in Leonardo's hands.

I'd have happily given him the NECA Leonardo swords, but one of mine broke at the hilt.

You should have your Toon-Cycle soon. :twink:

Excellent, thanks! Oddly enough I'd received notification of refusal just an hour or two before receiving notification that you'd accepted and I'd won the item. I assume it automatically sends such a notice if an offer is made that doesn't meet a pre-set lowest acceptable price? I've never dealt with Make an Offer before.

Whatever the case, the motorcycle is gonna reside in the background in the sewer to suggest a Cowabunga Carl kind of deal, and I've had a dumb but fun idea for the Raph figure for several years. Looking forward to finally getting around to it.

I captured a few more Turtle portraits yesterday, too, so I should be sharing those soon. :)

Did you make more than one offer? I think your first offer was below the parameters I'd set, and your second offer was in between them, so everything was done automatically. I usually do it that way because it saves a lot of work for me. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Monte Williams

Ah, that explains it; I did indeed make two offers. Honestly, as much as anything else I was just experimenting to see how Make an Offer works, but that said, I'm glad I won the item. :)

Once I have Raph in hand I'll see whether I want to get the other three 'Toon Turtles... and I still want the movie star versions... and the 2003 versions... oy.

Oh wow. I was just whining, it didn't occur to me you could get them. :)

Just don't have me hunt down anything if you aren't serious about buying it. I seem to run into that problem alot.

That's messed up. Rest assured I wouldn't do that, and indeed I'll advise you not to pursue anything yet, 'cause unless my Rancor and/or Gipsy Danger sell, I won't have money anytime soon, especially for the movie star figures, which tend to go for much more than they're worth in my opinion. Also a buddy might be sending me his movie star figures so I can photograph them, and really that's all I need them for, so I'm not sure yet whether I'll pursue those.

What do you reckon it'd cost for the four Turtles from the 2003 series? I'd prefer them loose, and with black belts, and while I love articulation I'd prefer the initial releases to the Fighting Gear or any other articulated variant. I also wouldn't necessarily need their accessories, 'cause I don't care for them anyway; they're too cartoony. I'd probably just have them borrow the NECA accessories my Nick Turtles use.

In this latest ridiculous update, Sam and Twitch take a break from Rat City to investigate a persistent urban myth about humanoid turtles living in the sewer, while Sigma 6 Hi-Tech's H.O.U.N.D. droid serves as an modernized, streamlined Knucklehead (I added a Xevoz claw for giggles) and Leonardo goes on a spirit quest.

Thank you very much!

A short update this time. I visited the thrift shop again, and again I scored a bunch of skate ramps! I want to reiterate that this thrift store has been utterly useless to me for years, and suddenly it's All Awesome, All the Time; in addition to the skate ramps, I also scored a broken train set which will be perfect for a weird Tonto photo I have wanted to capture for months. Huzzah!

Not bad, not bad... might work with some of the previous pieces...

Oh my god oh my god oh my god! Bricks! Stairs! Whoo-hoo!

I can just about build a cool lair using nothing but skate crap at this point!

Also, 'cause I alone never tire of photos of the Turtles under the bridge, I captured at least a couple-dozen new portraits today that I'll share once they're all on Flickr.

I also got a free item from a store because I asked what they'd be doing with it when their promotion was done and the vendor said I could have it. Photos tomorrow, most likely.

Finally, I visited the drive-in theater tonight for a second viewing of Guardians of the Galaxy... and a second viewing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Good times.

If you have the vintage Turtle Blimp or the Nick Turtle Blimp, then you have a blimp that's far superior to mine. But if nothing else, the price was right!

I reckon Don stole the blimp and hasn't gotten around to giving it a makeover or weapons.

Here's the answer:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5552/15077562595_41c5e26331.jpg

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3902/15077570545_e3cbc0e25c.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835/14891014387_6b205169a6.jpg

And for another take on Krang:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3857/15133451355_aecfbd76cf.jpg

I used my novelty severed hand from London Dungeon to represent the hand of Krang's android body. You might recall that in the pilot to the original cartoon Krang used some nonsensical computer chip thingy to make the body grow to Godzilla size. I reckon the Turtles knocked it down some bigass bottomless pit and now he's climbing back up.

That didn't turn out well for Krang, apparently...

I have three more Donatello portraits I've yet to upload to my Flickr photostream, and of course a buttload of ideas for Bebop and Rocksteady portraits, plus I have not one but two Nickelodeon Secret Sewer Lair playsets on the way thanks to a trade with another buddy on Facebook, and a set of Lego Turtles on the way courtesy of the gray market lifesavers on eBay...

Maybe eventually I'll stop spamming this poor forum, but it won't be anytime soon!

When I was cleaning up after this shot:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3902/15077570545_e3cbc0e25c.jpg

...I noticed that the taller accessory had stuck to the large chunk of metal on which everything was resting, at which point I remembered that said taller accessory is a piece from the lightsaber that came with an 18-inch Darth Maul figure I bought five or six years ago; its pieces are detachable via hidden magnets.

I had to take advantage somehow, so:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3871/14964479848_f0da742b4b.jpg

And this is another goodie I received in my recent trade with Dom:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5564/14964479458_cfcc4500fd.jpg

It's from some McFarlane Toys Youngblood figure from the mid-'90s.

Finally, apropos of nothing, a nonsensical pairing:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3916/14976268137_3475794fa7.jpg

I say "finally", but I'm thinking maybe tomorrow I'll go on another shoot, and for want of more exciting options I'll probably bring my Turtles...

Meanwhile, tonight I put together one of the two sewer playsets I acquired in a trade with a friend of mine:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3917/15181706076_59e3ab8dde.jpg

I was thinking of just using the second sewer for parts, but now instead I'm thinking I might put 'em both together, take down the red brick bits and use them as extra walls down below to fill in the gaps (the openness is the one thing I don't like; that's partly why I like the 2003 set so much), and build a simple, flat wall out of thin wood to place behind it on all three sides to close it all in, then fill it to bursting with props and such...

For the record, my friend didn't get to take advantage of the $15 sewer sale, although he did manage to find a Buy One, Get One Half-Off deal. Still, it was the biggest trade I've ever put together, I think; he paid $50 just to ship everything to me!

I hastily added some props to the sewer for a quick sense of how it might eventually look.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5563/15224282212_7118ba0679.jpg

As you can see I also removed the street-level brick storefront and placed it down on the level of the subterranean bits. Of course it doesn't make sense thanks to the pizzeria sticker; maybe I'll pretend the Turtles stole a pizzeria sign. I mean, sure, they're heroes, but they're also teenagers.

Incidentally, the sidewalk on my sewer seems to be warped:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3876/15038075257_60ce7374f5.jpg

Not sure whether I did something to it or it's just messed up.

Meanwhile, I have two sewers, one still sealed... I remain half-convinced I can somehow combine them into one massive scene, but I'm hesitant to open the second sewer, lest I discover that I am mistaken.

I also really want to add some weathering detail to the bricks and whatnot, but setting aside my nervousness (I've never painted), it'd be such a major undertaking that I'm not sure I want to commit to it!

I'm also not sure yet how I'll incorporate the skate ramps and such. Maybe I'll have to put together two (or more?) different sets for different purposes?

I'd like to create a sunken area to accommodate the big skate pool, so that the surface of the pool would be level with the floor/ground, the way a pool should be. Beyond that, I have almost nothing in the way of specific ideas.

But I do have more tiresome portraits! Specifically, I thought I'd give some spotlight time to Raphael, since Don has dominated so far.

You'll never get the paint skills until you dive in head first. I'd start just doing some basic paint on some of your props, because, that'll not hurt the overall appearance, figurerealm has some great beginners tutorials. It's really not as hard as you'd think, especially on big pieces. Figures can be a bit more complicated though.

Wise counsel. Of course, I need to set aside money for paint and such first!

Definitely, the good paints cost pert near 4 dollars a jar. Though you can probably use the cheaper acryls for larger areas

I agree with this, just dive in! I tend to do so and assume I can fix any problems later. I do a lot of drybrushing, which is pretty simple. Also, I try to go for a grungy, dirty look because I'm not much of an artist so if it looks terrible, hey, it's supposed to look terrible! I tend to think the animated style stuff people do is more difficult because of all the clean, bold colours and the tidy borders.

I love the effects a simple dry brush can give. Adds alot of depth to a piece. I also prefer painting buildings, walls and such, not near as much precision needed.

Is that a Warrior of Virtue conversing with Leo?

'Tis indeed! I have never seen the movie, but I've always been curious about it and eager to photograph some of the toys, two of which I scored in the same trade that brought two Nick sewers to my doorstep.

Monte, I would be interested in seeing that. Do you have a link? Thanks

I can't link to it, 'cause it was on Facebook, a place I mostly hate for precisely that reason; it's counterintuitive to navigate and impossible to utilize as an archive. I started threads on forums and I can retrieve them in three seconds with a google search even if they're years old, but if I share a photo in a Facebook group tonight I'll waste tons of time trying to find it next week. Unfortunately, particularly where G.I. Joe is concerned, all the discussion seems to be gravitating towards Facebook.

Anyhoo, such is my selfless dedication and heroism that I downloaded the photo for you. Thank me with cash.

As far as I'm concerned the talented bastard owes me the cost of a sewer or two, 'cause I was mostly content with keeping mine as-is until I saw this!

Yeah, if I haven't seen it by now I'm sure I never will. I thought it seemed interesting, but I'm sure I'm not missing much. I just recently learned that the Roos were reused from Tank Girl.

Also, here's another agonizingly awesome repaint:

Thank you, notorious, for the kind words. No exact answer re: the size of the sewer at the moment, but I can say I opened the second sewer I received in the trade, and now they're side by side and my toy room is a disaster! :)

Now, you might think you realize just how badass is my buddy heymilt's paint work here, but my friends, you are mistaken. (He fixed Rocksteady's legs for me, too!) Behold, courtesy of Newton Gimmick at Infinite Hollywood, some before-and-after context:

Heymilt has outdone himself! And this is to say nothing of all the awesome extras he threw in, like the gerry can and Rocksteady's gun in that last portrait and a bunch of things I haven't even photographed yet.

Thanks, also, to my friend Ciarda, who found some affordable Classics figures in Ireland and shipped them directly to heymilt for me.

Meanwhile, last night I received three vehicles from the 2003 series, so it's a safe bet that there will be more photos soon.

Thanks for checking out Bebop and Rocksteady, folks!

How does a toy factory fudge up something as simple as legs?
Switched mine around, and must say that those were two of the most stubborn pegs I have ever dealt with.
Had to laugh. Not only were the calves on backwards but on the wrong legs to boot.

I scored some Mousers in a trade.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5597/15281532420_012b0e7d7f.jpg

I'm a bit meh about them, and I'm glad I found that out in a small-scale fashion, 'cause I missed out on an overseas auction for, like, hundreds of Mousers. I was all butthurt about it, 'cause I'd planned to put together a massive invasion for a photo shoot... but now that I have seven or eight of the little buggers, I don't particularly like their insubstantiality or the way they pose, so that's a bullet dodged, then.

Still, I like that photo. I reckon it's surveillance footage from some Technodrome security feed.

I also scored in a trade a vintage Ace Duck:

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2950/15287883300_c5d50d47d3.jpg

Next, I captured a brief action scene between Michelangelo and Bebop:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5610/15297380160_1df394e66b.jpg

I got a hell of a deal on some 2003 vehicles; the Battle Shell van, the Sewer Slider go-cart and the Shell Cycle, all for $30 shipped.

The van and go-cart serve the Nick Turtles nicely.

Wow. I haven't updated this thread since October!

Aaaand I never bought any paint, and my Nickelodeon sewer has been in my daughter's room for a month. I still hope to start practicing with paint someday, but the problem is that I never want to spend money on it because there are always tons of toys I'd rather buy! However, making my way through this thread again reactivated my interest somewhat, so we'll see...

Anyhoo, I happen to have captured a few Turtle portraits since my last update:

Back when I was planning to put together a custom sewer, good ol' Heymilt sent me a beautifully weathered section of wall to inspire me... and even though I decided I'd rather spend my money on toys than paint, it occurred to me that I could still capture a photo of the wall:

While I don't know of any character or vintage figure for whom he can substitute, McFarlane's Manga Overtkill is a beautiful mechanical menace, and towers over the Turtles in a satisfying manner.

Meanwhile, my daughter and I just watched Revenge, the most recent DVD release of the Nickelodeon series, which leads up to the season currently airing, concerning the Turtles in space. While I've never read any of the comics or seen any of the old cartoons that placed the Turtles in outer space, it always struck me as an odd storytelling notion, and it's never appealed to me much, although I'm definitely willing to give the Nick version the benefit of the doubt; for all its many issues, the Nickelodeon series is for my money the best animated take on the Ninja Turtles thus far.

Anyhoo, despite my antipathy towards the Turtles-in-Space theme, I'm inexplicably drawn to the space-themed toys... which is all the more odd when you consider that my Nick Turtles boast that grimy, detailed, realistic paint weathering courtesy of Heymilt, and the more cartoony, screen-accurate figures have never appealed to me.

Sensible or no, I am mightily tempted by the Target-exclusive Metal Mutants five-pack, which is currently reduced to thirty dollars. I am also thinking of skipping the woefully undersized Fugitoid ship in favor of a much larger (and discounted!) ship from some TV series on Disney, Junior. Look at how much larger it is than the Fugitoid ship:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1486/25572957580_f20181af84.jpg

Also, I just ordered the eleven-inch Leonardo in space gear. In my defense, he's reduced to less than eight dollars on Amazon, with free shipping for Prime accounts or with any purchase totaling $49 or more. Maybe that giant figure will get the space theme out of my system and save me some money.

Let's see... oh, I finally caved and bought a Mega Bloks figure:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1489/25264465004_fd849b2571.jpg

Meh. It's pretty great considering the size, but I don't like that they take a figure the size of a quarter, add a bunch of random plastic bits that don't really add any play value, wrap it in a boutique-looking box and then charge nearly ten bucks for it.

I returned it.

Here's another toy I knew better than to pursue but ended up buying anyway:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1674/25776405732_66f82f98aa.jpg

He'd look swell with some better paint work, but I don't quite care enough about him to ship him to someone to have it done. I am tempted to do a head swap on the NECA Jim Henson Donatello once he arrives; slapping his head onto my quarter-scale NECA Gandalf would be amusing.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3735/19609862226_eb55fe8210.jpg

Moving on...

I bought a NECA figure of a character I don't know (Ripley's daughter, as it happens), 'cause NECA's that damn good.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1452/25596609540_426bd7afe6.jpg

Having photographed her, I'm done with her and am giving her to a friend, but in a similar spirit to my use of NECA's Lilah from Jonah Hex as a LARP figure of April as a cowgirl, it did occur to me that Ripley's daughter here is wearing a yellow space suit, and as such could perhaps serve as a more real-world take on a space-themed April.

And the same auction that brought Manga Overtkill to my doorstep also included this weird robot whose name I don't know, but who might work as either an edgy take on Metalhead or just some random villain:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1554/25802213351_724164387a.jpg

I've given Raph a McFarlane weed whacker accessory and an old NECA Pirates of the Caribbean belt, in which I inserted a sheathed sword:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1696/25871245516_bc46f2c076.jpg

I scored a Nickelodeon Splinter from huzzah, as well as more of his future-themed customs, which I'll share in my next giant post later in the week.

I first read Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy sometime around 1990, and I always envisioned Marvin as this Fugitoid action figure, so when I scored a NECA Arthur Dent, I had to pair him up with my vintage Fugitoid.

Attentive types might notice that I used Leo's head on Mikey's body. Leo's bandana popped out the other day, and since it pops back in effortlessly, I didn't want to try removing Mikey's bandana and have it break, so I just did a hasty head swap for the purposes of showing off the LARP kitbash.

I bought a bunch of vintage figures for $3 each. I'm gonna send them to my buddy Heymilt for some weathering. Decided not to send these two:

I had Slash back in the day, and traded him for Metallica's ultra-rare Jump in the Fire EP. On cassette. 'Cause I'm old.

I also semi-recently bought an old Kabuki figure, both because she's awesome and because I thought perhaps she could serve as a cool Karai.

First off, I was struck by the prettiness of this splash of blue in the alley, and so I thought I'd capture a portrait of Leo against it:

Night Shadow Leonardo is not the SDCC version, but rather a knockoff I bought for $8 or so. He's striking enough that the lack of articulation doesn't bother me, but of course I knew about it ahead of time... and only paid $8.

I've also sent some figures to my buddy Heymilt for a makeover, and I put together a trade that will bring to my doorstep the Target-exclusive five-pack of the Turtles and Fugitoid with chrome bits (which is 50% off at Target, so take advantage before they're gone!), plus the Nickelodeon Party Wagon and all four Wal-Mart-exclusive Secret of the Ooze Classics figures, which I'm also planning to send to Heymilt.

So things might slow down here in this thread for a month or two (or maybe not!), but eventually business will pick up again with some very cool new figures and repaints!

In the meantime, to close, here's a shot of all four brothers from the Out of the Shadows series:

That there is the "Tactical Truck" from the Playmates Out of the Shadows series. It looks pretty fun, but it also looks very plastic and toylike. Plus, it's a bit small.

I've been eyeballing larger, more realistic alternatives from Dickie and Bruder. I was bummed to discover that the Bruder truck I'd been studying at Wal-Mart for a week or two is gone... but then I found one beat to hell at the thrift shop for $3, versus the $40 Wally World is charging and the $99 (!!!) some local store is charging.

Like I said, part of it is broken and it's missing its dumpster accessory (I suspect the dumpster that came with the Nick sewer might work with it, but mine is currently in Canada receiving a makeover from my buddy heymilt!), but it's huge, and frankly I don't care that it's broken 'cause I reckon the Turtles are pretty tough on their rides.

Way back in early March, I suggested that the Miles From Tomorrowland Stellosphere spaceship playset would be a cool substitute for the nicely sculpted but comically undersized Fugitoid ship.

...and now, five months later (!!!), I finally caved, 'cause Wal-Mart had one lonely, dusty Stellosphere for $25 rather than $40.

(I'm inordinately amused by the parking meter on the grille)

...and, more so, on the interior, which is normally just a boring hollow mess, as seen here:

What else?

Ah, yes. I finally put together the Nick April kitbash several people beat me to months ago:

April O'Neil Nickelodeon Kitbash (https://flic.kr/p/L17mBT) by Monte Williams (https://www.flickr.com/photos/geekcreek/), on Flickr

Standard Nickelodeon April O'Neil figure (with its giant, football-shaped head and sloppy eyes) plus the smaller, more accurate head from the otherwise lackluster space-themed April O'Neil in her yellow astronaut suit = screen-accurate April.

I am very happy with her, but she's not worth the price of two figures. Oh well.

Here she is with the human variant of Karai, whom I was quite pleased to find:

Cross-posted from the NECA Donatello thread...

It's been too cold and icy around here to take Donatello out to the alley for another proper shoot, so I've been playing around with more silly props and accessories for him. (I abandoned my ambitious plans for a giant custom sewer for my Playmates Turtles, and now I'm tempted to create one for this figure that dwarfs all the Playmates figures. I'm a genius).

Today's devastating triumph of creativity and the human spirit:

I bought this Lone Ranger lunchbox ornament a couple years ago for some gag portraits of NECA's quarter-scale Lone Ranger figure:

It's just been sitting here ever since, and so I grabbed it recently and placed it on a shelf next to that kitbashed Turtle Comm I recently shared, figuring Donatello might keep an old lunchbox around; why not?

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/422/32513122941_747514354d.jpg

Then I decided to put some goodies in it.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/685/32594956356_fe245f2a11.jpg

The brown paper that's all beat to hell is gnomish text from the Artemis Fowl novel. I printed it out and aged it and gave it to NECA's Epic Scale (quarter-scale) Gandalf to use as a scroll:

Here's a better look at the cassette. Or "tape", as it would have been called back in the day.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/302/32594954316_b66068a615.jpg

The cover is the business card of a Boise artist, toy creator and tattoo artist named Jay O'Leary. The tape itself is actually a microcassette on which I recorded my interview with Warren Ellis during his October Revolution Tour in 2000.

I'm not going to lie; I think I've changed some lives today, and we've all learned a lot about ourselves.

Monte Williams

I was mostly kidding about making a sewer for NECA's quarter-scale Donatello. But now I honestly think I'm going to do it.

Here's a quick photo I slapped together a week or so ago, just to give a sense of what I have in mind:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/509/32257483500_e2967ab9bd.jpg

Today, I bought some props and things. We'll see what happens.

In the meantime, I'm kitbashing a movie-aesthetic Cheapskate for Donatello.

Here's the original vintage Cheapskate, followed by some tentative first steps:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/335/32537232001_6b35eb9f03.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/614/31794031604_dfc0a6db17.jpg

...and today I hit the jackpot! I was thinking of buying a mini-fan and trying to find some sort of small engine, when what should I find at the thrift shop for two bucks?

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/345/31847189433_da8dbb482d.jpg

An engine and fan in one! I am far more excited about this silliness than I should be.

Tonight at the thrift shop I spent $10 I really didn't want to spend, but I like to think it's worth it:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/489/31914005744_ec15d29002.jpg

It's called the Totes Tabletop Pool Table. There's one available for $26 shipped on eBay right now.

The light bulb is from a very old vanity I bought at the same thrift shop a few days ago for $3; I took it apart to get to its four miniature lightbulbs. I will either use them for lighting my sewer lair that I am increasingly certain I am going to make, or attach them to some wacky device that'll serve as one of Don's inventions.

Tonight I scored something simple but also, for someone with my nonexistent tools and skills, very valuable: a bunch of wooden flats with grid patterns precut into them.

Geek Creek 1:4 Custom Sewer Lair WIP (https://flic.kr/p/QKwiBe) on Flickr

Each 3X3 flat was a dollar at ye old Mormon thrift shop. Twelve bucks total was a no-brainer.

Should I use them as the floor, to help distinguish it from the plain walls, or use it as a lower portion of the walls to suggest a subway?

Also, I'm thinking light gray for the walls (so that the Turtles pop against its drab, light backdrop) and dark gray for the floor. Thoughts on that?

Admittedly, they have the wrong number of fingers for a ninja turtle, but if nothing else they should look cool as additional props on a shelf in the lair.

Things have slowed down in this old thread in recent months. I'm tempted to start a new thread for just my NECA quarter-scale photos and custom accessory ideas and whatnot, but A. hardly anyone responded to the NECA quarter-scale thread I already started, and that one is designed to invite everyone to participate, which leads me to assume that B. maybe this thread is dying 'cause people are just sick of my ****, ha ha ha.

It's this whole subforum that has slowed down for some reason. I posted my first thread showing off my customs with alot of views but only 3 comments and the sad part is I had to fish for those .

I'm definitely part of the problem; I've admired your thread at least twice this week, and yet I'm pretty sure I haven't commented. (I'll fix that once I'm done here).

This thread and my similar but even more self-indulgent thread at the HISS Tank forum have both slowed down, which I suppose is natural once a thread gets this big; it probably doesn't help that I use the same handful of locales and backdrops over and over... and I photographed Heymilt's repaint of Nick Donatello billions of times. Still, it was humbling to look back through the past few pages and realize that only one person had commented since the start of September and I'd just continued posting, oblivious, ha ha ha.

The reason I don't just let it die? I still love forums; I prefer them to Facebook and the like by a wide margin. Not sure why, there's just something about the dialogue in format form that satisfies me. There's also at least an illusion of permanence, whereas it's a pain to find something I shared on Facebook last week, let alone three years ago.

Well with Facebook you have all these different groups and such for things like this and I guess more people prefer that. Myself however I prefer forums so I'm with you on that.

The diversity of choices on Facebook is great in theory, but it just means there are several TMNT groups (for example) all competing, and people are posting their same stuff in every group; I dig the more centralized approach of the 'Drome.

I also like being able to share photos in this format, like a blog post or magazine article, with text in-between the images rather than descriptions you can only read by clicking on a given image.

I love your stuff, but since I get to see it on Flickr, I probably haven't paid as much attention to the thread.

I increasingly do this for myself as well. Finding a balance between doing it for myself and wanting recognition can be tricky.

And now, a huge, huge thank you to Coro and Space Monkey Toys for my SH Figuarts Turtles!

Thank You, Space Monkey Toys! (https://flic.kr/p/Sboh78)

They shipped with the quickness, and Coro was patient and generous even when I unwittingly became something of a pain to deal with. Thanks again, man!

I have barely touched the new figures, but I snapped a hasty cell phone photo in my toy room and hit it with a Prisma filter:

And I got to thinking... if I'm clever about it, perhaps I can paint my giant sewer lair in such a fashion that it can be to scale with NECA quarter-scale figures, as planned... but also with Figuarts Turtles.

I've got many other ridiculous and impractical ideas brewing, too. We'll see how many of them are viable enough to make it into this absurd thread.

I recently bought a View Master keychain that scales well with NECA's 1/4 Donatello.

I also picked up a vintage Metalhead for giggles.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3941/33345336990_b2e07e7684.jpg

I keep wanting to troop-build him or, more likely, his Nickelodeon counterpart, so that NECA 1/4 Don can have a bunch of wee Metalhead drones.

And on that topic, here are various new NECA 1/4 Don portraits, including proper shots of the ice cream truck:

I'm also working on a vehicle for the Figuarts Turtles:

Quarter-Scale TMNT Scratch Custom (https://flic.kr/p/UBdePY) by Monte Williams (https://www.flickr.com/photos/geekcreek/), on Flickr

This here is a weird "custom", even by my generous standards.

First off, here are some shots of the vintage Scratch figure for anyone for whom the character is unfamiliar (he was after my time):

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4196/34529349754_b3e5d65963.jpg

I found a cat skull in the Snake River Canyon a couple years ago, and on occasion I will utilize it as a background prop in a toy photo.

More recently, I got to studying it and decided it's roughly to scale with NECA's quarter-scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and my awesome niece Kristen was kind enough to sew a wee prison hat for him.

I tried adding his black mask, but setting aside my ineptitude with scissors, the mask simply obscured the skull too much.

Here are some more shots:
