View Full Version : Donatello Costume WIP

02-10-2015, 02:00 PM
Hey guys, I found this forum somehow through my thread at the replica prop forum. I'm working on a costume for Dragon Con 2015. I decided to build a full turtle suit "based" on the 1990 movie. I'm going for Donatello. I just started the mask a few days ago, and here's a few pics of my progress and where I'm at currently.

Not off to a great start. About halfway in I realized I mixed the turtles from both movies.. doh. I'm aiming more for the Corey Feldman voiced version.

A few hours and sore thumbs later... this is where we stand... Still not where I want to be though.

The next day my girlfriend is sick, so I worked on this some more while she played Skyrim. I completely redid the mask/eyes and mouth area. I'm pretty happy with where it is currently. Still some adjustments to make.

Comments, suggestions, ideas are all welcome!

Wow, the end result is stunning. Great job, your experience and talent really shows. What materials did you use to make it?

Sweet, brah!

02-17-2015, 02:19 PM
Lookin' pretty true to life! Faboo!

02-17-2015, 05:23 PM
Thanks guys! It's made from oil based clay. I still have some things to tweak and I'm trying to find some sources to get accurate sizing for proportions. Here's what it looks like with a little photoshop magic. I'll be molding it in silicone hopefully, and casting in latex. I plan to make the full suit. I just want to make sure I capture the likeness as best I can before I start the molding process.

Looks great, good luck with the mould making.

Oh, man - this mask will look superb when finished. Your costume is going to be main attraction at Dragon Con 2015. Did you decide to make Raph instead of Donnie, cause you colored his bandana red in Photoshop? Anyhow, I don't know if you wanted to make this effect, but bandana seems to be "leaning" to the right a bit. You may want to straighten it. Everything else looks perfect, I can't wait to see the whole thing!

It looks purple to me.

Azmyth, if you're up for one more advice from fellow artist, another thing you might want to adjust is the shape of bandana, right how it resembles a scuba-diving goggles a bit. You added too much layers of clay, so you gave it too much depth. I believe you were more close to how bandana is supposed look in previous phases of your modeling.

I originally posted the WIP on the dragon con forums asking people to "guess the turtle". I got a lot of Raphael guesses for some reason, so I photoshopped red, blue, and purple to give an idea of what each might look like.

The headband is where I am doing the most tweaks. I wanted it to be somewhat thick, but not quite as thick as it is. I've got to adjust that, and smooth out the entire thing and then apply texture.

I've been working on this some more. Started on the shell...

I wasn't sure what way to go since I need this to be a budget build so sculpting the whole thing out of clay is out of the budget.

I found a tutorial online for one made of cardboard so I tried that first, and then wound up using that as a base to make an EVA foam shell.

Fantastic job thus far buddy keep at it.

03-01-2015, 10:00 PM
Oh wow! You have an amazing talent! Love what you did with the shell, and the mask is spot on. Keep posting pics of your progress! Great work!

03-02-2015, 03:15 AM
Awesome, azmyth! The shell looks very much like the real thing, I love it. Contours are nice, well done. Smart thinking about using cardboard for basic shape, you saved a lot of clay that way. You are still going to have to use a lot of silicone and latex though. Are you a long way from molding process?

03-02-2015, 03:06 PM
Excellent work! :tsmile:

Maybe it's just me but I feel like that new mask is an incredible improvement over the old one. Not that the old one was bad! This one is just...better!

04-06-2015, 10:10 PM
^^ I agree it looks more screen accurate as well, that's for sure.

04-07-2015, 02:56 AM
Man, that shell looks awesome! How are you going to attach it, like a backpack, or as part of the suit itself?

New mask looks great as well... I agree with the others about screen-quality. :)

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the feedback!

I'm starting to smooth him up now, once I have him all smooth, I'll make a few more adjustments to his bandana, and get ready to mold and cast! Then the fun part!

Here's a few more photos!

I do believe the eyes are set back in too far or the bandana comes out too far. If you'd like me to help you more closely, you can send me a PM. I am a sculptor myself.

Awesome job, dude! Looking forward to seeing the final product.

The bandana does look a bit far out. But I'm sure once you put the paint and fabric on it it'll look a better. But it's looking snazzy nonetheless.

04-10-2015, 08:35 PM
Yeah, you guys might be right. It's just so hard to tell with how dark the movie was.

Here's some of the grabs I've been using for reference.

Less than 100 days til con, and I'm not even half way finished.. but i'm progressing at least.

Finally able to wear the shell (temporarily). I know that the ones I've seen have backpack straps keeping them on, but I just couldn't figure out how to make that work and be able to cover them up with the torso.

Here's a few pics. I want to make the shell a little more raised, it's totally hollow inside so it doesn't stick out as much as I think it should.. any suggestions?

https://scontent-atl1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/11133798_10153247274436620_1980223226353085788_n.j pg?oh=5040d42a2a9cafb1324b9e40ffee3253&oe=55BFAA16

The front shell will be velcroed to the side flaps so they lay flat. I might trim it down a bit, it might be a tad bit too wide right now.. we'll see.. I also have to remember that a muscle suit will be underneath this, but it shouldn't factor in too awfully much. I don't want my suit to be as bulky as I've seen others. I don't think the turtles were that bulky in person in the movies, they just look bigger on camera than they actually were.

https://scontent-atl1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/10387305_10153247288336620_4060542881540246566_n.j pg?oh=c9ed7e37b3f1c0f051bec9c147cb48e8&oe=55F7BB35

I made a form out of my hands using duct tape, and some disposable gloves and expanding foam to sculpt my hands with. In hindsight I should have done my entire forearm, but i'm debating having the forearm be part of the torso instead of it being part of the hands, so that I can take the hands off to eat easier at cons. I did the same thing for my legs. I plan to sculpt and mold my legs and hands, and then use the "foam over spandex" method for the torso and the shorts. This will keep my costs down and mobility high.
