View Full Version : Repaint commission?

Hi all!

I'm new here, like brand new (ha ha) and this is my first topic. I hope I'm not breaching any rules and please let me know if I am wrong in posting this and I will change it immediately but... onto the subject in question...

I have recently bought a lovely little Donatello figure from the 2014 movie and he stands at about 11 inches tall. He's nice enough to look at and all that but he is missing some serious detail and accessories. He doesn't look all that accurate to the movie and it's bugging me to no end!

I'm just wondering if there's anybody out there who is maybe up to the job of doing a movie-accurate repaint of my figure - of course not unpaid! - and add some of the details/accessories he's missing so badly out on? I've looked all over and had no luck so far!

I can add pictures of the figure in question if anybody would like them for reference and I thank you all in advance for reading my post :)

Thanks again,

Donnie_fangirl

I recommend you ask Valerobots: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25311154@N06/

He creates all sorts of insane, Acid Rain/World War Robotesque robots and monsters, but he also does astonishing repaints. For example, here is Hasbro's bland Prototype Boba Fett:

And here's the Valerobots repaint:

And here's a before-and-after on a cheap-looking Optimus Prime:

He's on Facebook and Flickr, and his prices are very reasonable.

Whoever you hire to do it, please post photos; I had my eye on that figure for quite a while with the intention of having someone weather it for me, so I'd be interested to see how it comes out!

Thank you so much for your reply and information! I will most definitely check out his sites and contact him! Thank you again! xx

There's plenty of British customizers here who might be up for it, and it'd probably cost you a lot less, what with postage and all. Hell, if I had the time I'd offer to do it myself...

I have enquired with Valerobots and awaiting his response. Unfortunately, I have asked around several people and had no luck and not many people have suggested taking on the project. My plan is however to get some more figures and they will all need repainting so who knows what could happen in the future? :)

My pleasure.

Meanwhile, Disco raises a valid concern; Valero is in the States, so shipping might be pricey.

Ahh well I will still negotiate with him. It's a commission request; whoever does it will be putting themselves out tremendously so I'm quite happy to pay for their service. If it's out of my price range then I will politely decline and hope for luck elsewhere. Poor Donnie is looking so plain in his little box u_u

The Boba fett wasn't really bland, that was just going off of the early "bland" super commando look the character was originally designed for.

Back on to the original note. I was thinking of getting the movie Mikey to paint and maybe add other details that are missing. I would like to work on someone elses turtle, but I want to try my hand at the big figure first. I am use to the smaller scale.

Also can anybody find good pictures of the symbols that are painted on the back of the characters' shells?

You're right, of course. I suppose I'd have stated it that way myself if Hasbro hadn't become known in recent years for nearly Playmates levels of weak paint apps.

However, I'm not a big Star Wars enthusiast, and as such I don't much care about the prototype concept (although McQuarrie was a damn genius); I only bought the Fett 'cause I thought Valero improved it so massively.

Hasbro has done a pretty weak job on the figures within the last year and their releasing of the figures are even worse. No worries though, they have saved me some money. Playmates has benefited.

I wanted to throw out some info about that Fett. Valero did a good job on his version, not my favorite custom of the many Fetts I have seen, but nontheless well done.

Try this guy, he is one of my favorite customizers:

This guy pretty much does all Transformers, and does it well:

Jin is an absolute genius. I've been drooling over his customs for a decade.

I kind of get that feeling at times towards his stuff. Though I can't so for sure, because I've never met nor had any contact with him.

That's not to say he's not talented, he is that, but not as great as it seems people make him out to be.

When he started, he was one of the most innovative customizers around, and a great inspiration and help to a lot of us guys who were just starting out. Unfortunately, his ego increased disproportionally to his skill level and he started engaging in all sorts of nasty/dodgy behaviour (which I'm not going to go into here), burning all sorts of bridges in the process. He's still a technically good customizer, but seems content in staying firmly in his comfort zone, never really trying anything new or daring - quite a contrast to some of the top guys over at places like Fwoosh & Figure Realm.

I'm a regular on FigureRealm, and I love some of the work over there, a lot of my beginning customs stemmed from there, and the tutorials were life savers, though I've never really dug into the Fwoosh Customs.

Wow. This thread has really come alive with some great suggestions and just reading the talk about the different artists and their pros and cons is very enlightening. I have contacted Valero and we negotiating a price and he will be looking for a figure to paint. My 11" figure is still currently available if anybody would like to take a stab at it. I want to have the whole collection and have them repainted to be more movie accurate. I imagine Donnie will be the hardest due to the fact he's missing a lot of detail from the movie, what with his tech gear and all and he hasn't even got his glasses! :o

Thank you all very much for your help!

If my Donnie figure does not get repainted, would you perhaps be interested in trying it out on him? He's about 11" tall and no matter what anybody does, chances are he'll look a lot better than he does now and a lot better than if I tried repainting him! I am willing to pass him on to be repainted so I have to have faith in the offers, of course!
