View Full Version : Ghost in the Shell manga reprints

The Ghost in the Shell manga had two follow-up mangas, Man-Machine Interface and Human-Error Processor. I've been meaning to pick these up for a while now. Both of them were later reprinted. Are there any differences between them or is each reprint the same as the original?

HEP: http://amzn.to/1TrkNuD & http://amzn.to/1N3Zz1H

If there's no differences then I'll pick up the cheaper ones.

Not sure. I have a couple of GItS issues from way back, but I don't know whether they are from the main manga, or one of these. They are buried somewhere in my "need to sort" comics ATM.

The first manga was also censored when it was first printed. Is it the same or the MMI & HEP? Or were they not worthy of censorship?

I really couldn't say, since it's been ages since I even looked through those. And they were the only ones I've ever seen. Found them in a lot of comics that I co-bought with a friend of mine. I fronted the money, and he went and picked them up. Since I had first dibs, I picked out a bunch of stuff that caught me eye, and those two issues were in it. Still have yet to sort through most of it, and I don't remember what issues they were, but I didn't notice any censorship in particular. Most of it is still packed away ATM, and I just never seem to have the time or energy to tackle the project. There was a LOT of comics in there!

Honestly, up until I got them, I hadn't even known there WAS a comic/manga for it. Would love to find more of them someday, though, as I loved the movie and the SAC/2nd Gig series. There were a few Robotech ones in that mix, too, and I've love to find the rest of those, too, for my hubby. He's a HUGE Robotech/Macross fan.

Usually the manga is better the anime, but is this the case for GiTS as well?

Not sure- the couple of issues I have seemed to have nothing to do with the anime. I read them once or twice, and IIRC, the only thing the same was Kusinagi.

Yeah, my understanding is that the films and anime are both different interpretations of the original manga, both deviating heavily in their own way.

I asked elsewhere and was given this link:

The first series, The Ghost in the Shell, follows Dark Horse’s original release, so The Ghost in the Shell (http://www.randomhouse.com/book/166169/the-ghost-in-the-shell-volume-1-by-shirow-masamune/9781935429012/) and The Ghost in the Shell 2 (http://www.randomhouse.com/book/200115/the-ghost-in-the-shell-volume-2-by-shirow-masamune/9781935429036/) both read left-to-right. (The Ghost in the Shell 1.5 (http://www.randomhouse.com/book/213293/the-ghost-in-the-shell-15-by-shirow-masamune)is right-to-left for some reason…) If there’s any censorship in there, it’s not something we did— it’d be a holdover from the Dark Horse days. But I don’t think they censored very much, and certainly nothing plot-relevant.

So according to this, both Kodansha and Dark Horse's prints of the GitS 2 and 1.5 mangas are the same. Correct? Reading left-to-right doesn't bother me, it's the censorship that does.

Well, I've gone and ordered the Kodansha prints. A few other places say those are the uncensored ones. Fingers crossed.

They've arrived and they both say "Mature Content" on the covers whereas Dark Horse's do not. I also reached out to Kodansha on Twitter and they told me their prints are identical to Dark Horse's. Looks like I've found my answer then.
