Looks like Disney's making a sequel to Mary Poppins. This is set some 20 years after the original movie and will be adapting the rest of the books in the series. Apparantly there's 8 books in all that were released from 1934 - 1988!

I read all 8 books. Spoiler alert: Mary Poppins was really kind of a b!tch at times. Very stern. Nowhere near as sweet and bubbly as Julie Andrews.

Also, Disney, WTF.

Pretty sure the original was released in 1964, making it 51 years later. A cameo, maybe...reprising their original roles, I doubt it. Also...why would they bother with a sequel now? Why not 40 years ago? Even 30 years ago would've been ok.

The original film is based on parts from the first two books anyhow, so it wasn't even a straight transfer to screen. But I do have to wonder... how could a new version live up to the original?

Rob Marshall says that this movie is not a remake of the original film but an "extension".

"It is not a new Mary Poppins," Marshall told Vulture last night at the National Arts Awards about his upcoming Disney musical about the iconic nanny. Instead, Marshall's project will be set in 1934, when the original P.L. Travers books were written, and draw from the other books about the iconic nanny. "P.L. Travers wrote eight books all together. They worked from the first book, and we are working from the other books, not touching the iconic brilliance of Mary Poppins. This is an extension. I'm a huge fan of the original, and I'm a very good friend of Julie Andrews, and I hold it in such awe," he said. "There is all this new material — it was the Harry Potter of its time — and they were never turned into anything further than that adventure."

He also says it's possible that Julie Andrews could have a role in it.

"She is a very dear friend, and if she could be involved in some way, it would be very special," he says. "I know she is very happy that we're doing it and, after 50 years, feels that it is time."

Disney has officially announced that the film will be titled, Mary Poppins Returns. The movie is also scheduled for release on December 25, 2018. There are lots of details about the plot and more in the article below.

Disney has officially announced a sequel to the 1964 classic “Mary Poppins” called “Mary Poppins Returns” with Rob Marshall directing and starring Golden Globe Award winner Emily Blunt (“Into the Woods,” the upcoming “Girl on the Train”) and Emmy, GRAMMY, Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “In the Heights”).

The same production team that created “Into the Woods” will be reuniting with this new project as it will be produced by Marshall, Emmy winner and Golden Globe® nominee John DeLuca and Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award® nominee and Golden Globe winner Marc Platt. Oscar nominee David Magee will be writing the screenplay, which will be based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.

More info on the upcoming film was provided by Disney’s press release:

Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins and Miranda will play a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

According to Emily Blunt, the character in this film will be much closer to the P.L. Travers' original series than the version Julie Andrews played in the film.

“I feel a little more trepidation with this [character] because she’s so emblematic of people’s nostalgia,” Blunt says. “It’s such an important character in people’s childhood.”

While Andrews’ version of the magical nanny was sweet but firm, Blunt says her Mary Poppins will be slightly different — closer to the character from P.L. Travers’ original series. “We’re delving into the books a lot more,” she explains, “which is a different version of the character, I’ll say that much.” When she’s reminded that book Poppins is slightly tougher than fans of the 1964 film might expect, Blunt gives a coy smile: “She’s a little meaner, yeah.”

She also shared the reaction Julie Andrews had when she learned the news that Blunt had been cast in the role.

Blunt hadn’t yet spoken to Andrews when she sat down with EW in early August, but Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall had — and he relayed the experience to her. “Rob said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews], and he said, ‘It’s top secret, but Emily Blunt’s playing Mary Poppins,’” Blunt recalls. “And she went, ‘Oh, wonderful!’”

“I felt like I wanted to cry,” she says. “It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.”

Mary Poppins is pop culture, everyone knows who she is since its parodied all the time. I never saw the original film either, I mean it came out in 1964 and yet I knew who she was because of parodies and understood jokes about it. It's likely easier now for kids to know who Mary Poppins is since you can find the movie much easier now than in the past.

ranger_scout

Julie Andrews won't be appearing in the film. That's too bad. :( However, I can understand the reason why she won't be in it.

Marshall recognizes that Andrews’ endorsement is a hot topic, but he insists that the 81-year-old legend is “one thousand percent” in support of the film. “Julie will always be, for me and for everybody, the most astonishing performance as Mary Poppins, winning the Oscar and bursting onto the scene so brilliantly,” he says. “But Emily is the perfect person to carry the torch, and I know Julie feels the exact same way. She loves her.”

So much so, in fact, that Andrews decided not to appear in the sequel out of respect to Blunt. (Van Dyke, on the other hand, does make a cameo — but no, not as Bert.)

Marshall explains, “Julie was incredibly gracious, and we talked about it in a very general way but she made it clear right up front. She said, ‘This is Emily’s show, and I really want it to be Emily’s show. I don’t want it to be, “Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.” I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.’”

Say what you will about Hollywood, but it’s a town of relationships that can turn the tide on any project — and Marshall’s involvement in Mary Poppins Returns is case in point for convincing Andrews that her legacy was in good hands. “She said it’s time and she said, ‘I know it’ll be cared for,’” says Marshall. “And that’s the thing I think about every day when I’m at work. We all do.”

Of course it's impossible to top a masterpiece like the original, but I thought this film was pretty darn good. It really made me feel like a kid again and my mom felt the exact same way when she saw it with me. The film is lively and the animated scenes that combined with the live-action ones were top notch. Emily Blunt had gigantic shoes to fill, but I thought she was marvelous. Lin-Manuel Miranda was absolutely perfect in his part. The special appearances from Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury were simply wonderful. Meryl Streep also played an interesting character. The songs are nice but not amazing. I did think that the choreography was superb. Overall, this is huge treat to watch on the big screen.

I wish I could have wept during the bowl scene.

It was definitely the best part of the movie, especially given how much technology has changed. The actors could truly interact with the animated characters, who had more capability for dimensional range than in the original.

And then there was the bit when one of the kids swapped hats with the dog guy.

And the way the "live action" sets were blended with the animated, whereas the original had the actors on live action props that couldn't be blended at the time.

I could keep gushing, but I'd get less and less coherent. The best I could do for now is "ART PRETTY."

I saw it and I liked it! Probably the best sequel I've ever seen to a movie 60+ years old!

Rob Marshall already has plans for another film.

It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there's a lot of great material still to mine. That's what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know.

If there's a great character and story to tell, why not?

This movie was very disappointing, so many songs yet none of them were memorable at all.

Today, the movie just reached a milestone for live-action musical films at the box-office.

Shoutout to Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns which becomes the fifth highest live-action musical at the domestic box office with $150.7M to date, beating the lifetime stateside totals of Les Miserables ($148.8M), Mamma Mia! ($144.2M) and will soon pass La La Land ($151.1M). Worldwide, she’s at $287.9M and counting. Through 26 days in releases at the domestic B.O., Poppins is still pacing ahead of Fox’s The Greatest Showman by 58%. There have been various prolific star-studded screenings of the film in this final weekend of phase 1 Oscar nom voting with Sophia Loren here in LA and Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively in NYC. There is also a Mary Poppins Experience complete with sets and a screening occurring today on the Disney lot in Burbank.

Disney Film Chief Alan Horn says that as of right now there are no plans for a sequel.

Will there be a sequel to Mary Poppins Returns?

We have nothing in the works.

This film might not have reached blockbuster status, but I think $342 million worldwide is a respectable total. Also, here in North America, it surpassed the box office total of Rob Marshall's critically acclaimed movie, Chicago.

In other news, the film will be released on Digital and Movies Anywhere starting on March 12 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD March 19. Some of the extras for the home video release have also been announced.
