View Full Version : Mixing Turtles with Toys from Other Series and Scales

A few of us were talking in the TMNT Toys Action Scenes/Shots thread, and we're pretty sure that no thread like this exists already here at the Technodrome Forums. If we're wrong, I apologize, and mods, please feel free to delete this thread.

Inspired by this five-year-old G.I. Joe thread on the HISS Tank forum:

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-toys-modern-general-discussion/116608-mixing-gijoe-toys-other-lines-different-scales.html

...and inspired, also (and closer to home), by OrokuYoshiFilms and his photos combining the Nickelodeon space-themed figures posed against a backdrop that includes the vintage Playmates Star Trek TNG Transporter, this thread is intended to be a brainstorming resource for collectors, customizers and kitbashers.

Please share your ideas and photos for any toys or accessories, old or new, that compliment Ninja Turtles figures of any scale!

I'll share a few, to start things off.

McFarlane Toys has a lot of figures that serve as either cool, generic antagonists or, in many cases, startlingly similar stand-ins for existing Ninja Turtles supporting characters and villains.

For example, here's The Heap, who I've long regarded as a sort of edgy, realistic take on Muckman (I'm not the only person to use him in this role):

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5560/15142180775_16217e5f85.jpg

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8306/7809038442_52b5f4f0f5.jpg

And McFarlane's Poacher is quite reminiscent of Doctor El:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7430/12332345034_7d2193e392.jpg

Here are many, many other McFarlane matches for vintage Ninja Turtles figures:

https://twofistedtoytalk.wordpress.com/2012/08/19/modern-day-mutants/

Some of them are uncanny.

Moving beyond McFarlane, the Monkeyman Build-a-Figure makes for a neat Sgt. Bananas:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/14936053829_c88458951f.jpg

With some paint, this Monster High car could possibly be transformed into a passable Neutrino flying car:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/14926911471_86bdd96c57.jpg
(It's called Sweet 1600 Draculaura Roadster, for the record)

I visited a Target during a business trip to Minneapolis last week and noticed that a spaceship called the "Stellosphere" (from some Disney, Jr. show or another) is reduced to $40. That might sound pricey, but I suspect it would be a very cool substitute for the nicely sculpted but comically undersized Fugitoid ship:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1486/25572957580_f20181af84.jpg

Finally, I have a dumb but potentially cool idea for a giant custom Technodrome:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1484/25847537936_38e14fa445.jpg

Strategically cover the exercise ball with bits of electrical tape, and then paint some weathering detail on the whole thing and you'd be well on your way, I think.

For a base, I was thinking maybe a beat-up old incomplete General, from the vintage G.I. Joe series:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1650/25572880800_cb226d730d.jpg

I think I'll leave it at that, 'cause beyond these suggestions I mostly just have weird gear I've slapped onto my Turtles, added to which I already have a self-indulgent thread loaded with my photos and goofy ideas.

Instead, I wanna see everyone else's combos, ideas and photos!

Forgot this one. I've been thinking of buying some figure or another from NECA's old Reservoir Dogs series for a quick n' easy Bishop.

I've liked a few of the Earthworm Jim figures to go with the turtles.
I believe they were also done by playmates so their scale is the same.
Some of the villains make for good baddies.
I specifically like Henchrat (rat kings disciples maybe)

And Psycrow which could be one of the space themed enemies

Wow, the Disney JR ship thing is funny because my parents thought it was Fugitoid's ship. They thought that Miles guy was Mikey (They don't know crap about TMNT. They didn't even know Mikey was a turtle).

Ok this is great. I've been compiling a list actually of the various things I've found. I'll post it soon. Then I'll add pics once I take them. Kinda how fellow 'dromer Bill chronicled the classic stuff.

I can't wait to see your contributions!

Could you link us to Bill's post? I don't collect vintage stuff, but I still harbor considerable affection for it. I'd love to study his thread.

Heh-heh, that's awesome.

See, this is exactly why I think a thread like this can be a great resource. I admire Lego from afar, but I've never really pursued that style or scale. Consequently, I never visit the mini figure section of the forum (I assume there's such a subsection to the forum). Therefore it would never have occurred to me to utilize these accessories!

I've liked a few of the Earthworm Jim figures to go with the turtles...

Great suggestion. I've seen people make clever use of Bucky O'Hare figures as well, and of course Toxic Crusader.

For anyone, like me, who is intrigued at the suggestion but barely familiar with the Earthworm Jim series, here's a handy look at the figures:

http://www.leftoverculturereview.com/2014/05/13/earthworm-jim-action-figures-playmates-1995/

Or, if you skew towards a slightly more gritty or realistic aesthetic, Mezco produced their own figure of Jim that boasts a more dynamic, detailed sculpt:

http://www.amazon.com/Mezco-Toyz-Earthworm-Action-Figure/dp/B0073HNOEC

Finally, Pixel Dan, always thorough and informative, also has a video on the Mezco Earthworm Jim figure, including the obligatory Comparison Time with the Playmates Jim figure:

Keep the suggestions coming, folks! :)

Great idea for a thread. I never owned any Earthworm Jim action figures, but just looking at them does make me think they would fit in nicely alongside the vintage 90s TMNT line.

Too small. I've been on the lookout for a police car. I wanted the one from the movie but it's too small.

Two great playsets from the Swamp Thing toy line by Kenner. The Swamp Trap I use as the Punk Frogs hideout. The Transducer I use as experimentation lab in my Shredder lair. Looks great with Kraang or Baxter. Gotta give credit to fellow 'Dromer Slash32 for the Transducer. The Bayou Blaster which is a vehicle I thought would be great with Leatherhead if you're partial to the classic Cajun version. I don't own that one though.

It's true, tmntfannumerouno, as OrokuYoshiFilms suggests, that the Zootopia figures are much, much smaller than the Turtles. However, I've been studying them every time I visit the toy aisles, and there is a small vehicle or two that might work with Turtles, added to which the rabbit dude could work; I know Usagi Yojimbo has always been portrayed as being roughly the same size as the Turtles, but if you approach the mutation concept with the idea that the resulting humanoid's size will vary depending on the animal with which he was combined, then maybe a rabbit would be very small. I mean, he shouldn't be much if any smaller than the Turtles, I suppose. But maybe it was a human child who merged with a rabbit?

As I'm sure you can tell, I've been trying like mad to justify purchasing that little rabbit figure. :)

Same. I've never owned any Earthworm Jim, Bucky O'Hare or Toxic Crusader figures. I did have a couple Dick Tracy figures, but at that time I didn't have any vintage Turtles with which to combine them. Still, some of the villains are pretty wild in appearance, and could be interesting additions to a vintage TMNT collection.

Woah, I think you killed it with that Swamp Thing playset to use with the Nick Frogs! I never liked the new Frog figures, but you actually made them look cool!

And the mad scientist playset works pretty well with Baxter too! Slap a Foot Clan sticker on it, and I'd believe it was intended to work the whole time!

The Walking Dead figures go perfect alongside the 2014 Movie figures if you're looking for something a little more realistic in nature.

And of course the Muckman/Heap

Also it's Playmates, but it's from the WILDCATS line.

A while back I saw someone post an old Playmates 4Kids TMNT ad that featured Casey and some other figures with cool dioramas behind them. They were made for the Playmates Tomb Raider line. There's actually about 4 or 5 different sets but the two I own I feel best suit the Nick TMNT figures. I basically use them for street/city scenes. The rooftop diorama comes with a cool doberman that I use as a stray in an alleyway.

I peddle around various bargain stores looking for random goodness for pittance.

I picked up the Star Trek: TNG Transporter a few years back for $5. Long before the Nick toon's Fugitoid arc (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1559302&postcount=2152), I figured it would make a good stand in for Krang's Matter Transporter from the old Cat Woman from Channel Six episode:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/Toy%20Shots/100_1145_zps6c97d197.jpg (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/slimer2erasmus/media/Toy%20Shots/100_1145_zps6c97d197.jpg.html)

For $3, I found this vintage Sesame Street Hooper's Store playset, which looks fantastic despite having been marketed to pre-schoolers. I really should try to get all four Turtles to strike a Mirage pose on top of it sometime:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/Toy%20Shots/100_2163_zpsqvqmjtti.jpg (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/slimer2erasmus/media/Toy%20Shots/100_2163_zpsqvqmjtti.jpg.html)

And although it surely wasn't the intended purpose of a +$100 DVD set box, the Time Life Real Ghostbusters firehouse case makes a fun, if off-scale, stand in for a city backdrop. Sounds like I might be better off with a Lego GB firehouse and the Mega Bloks TMNT line (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1538655&postcount=298) though. :-)
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/Toy%20Shots/toyrumble%20001_zpswbn5yiw5.jpg (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/slimer2erasmus/media/Toy%20Shots/toyrumble%20001_zpswbn5yiw5.jpg.html)

Michelangelo borrows the grappling hook concept from The Batman...

And puts it to good use!

And might the TMNT be the next property to join the Marvel Movie Universe?

I think I know the ones you're talking about. One comes with an alley and another with some kind of totem pole-type backdrop, I think?

These two are half-joking suggestions, and yet they're arguably the best figures I'll ever contribute to this thread. The drawback is that they are not in scale with any existing Turtle figures, with the possible exception of the taller figures based on the 2007 Imagi film, and those would present such a distracting aesthetic clash with the figures below that it still wouldn't be a viable match.

First, NECA's new Amanda Ripley, who is apparently Ripley's daughter and who stars in a video game called Alien: Isolation (I've never played it) and who is wearing a yellow space suit, which of course makes me think of April O'Neil in space.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1714/25596924520_7dd20d8c15.jpg

The Amanda-as-April notion reminded me of the last time I playfully suggested a NECA figure as a stand-in for April:

The Latest TMNT LARP Figure: April the Cowgirl! (https://flic.kr/p/oyWCso) by Monte Williams (https://www.flickr.com/photos/geekcreek/), on Flickr

I was not enthusiastic about the casting of Megan Fox as April in the Michael Bay-produced movie, but her performance was fine, I suppose.

...fine enough to inspire me to use a figure of Megan Fox in a Ninja Turtles context, at least. :)

The Drome's own huzzah alerted me to this a year or two back:

This is from the DC Unlimited Resistance 2 toys. I have no idea who he is, and I had to google search just to find out its origin, since it was being sold loose at a clearance store.

Anyway, I wished they had more that just the one human figure, so my Movie-inspired, because I honestly don't tie anything into its source most times, EPF currently has only one agent.

Great sense of depth in your display and photo, man. Good combination of figures, too!

I've never heard of Wild Kratts, but this Tortuga Playset, while too small to serve its intended purpose for Turtles figures (although it'd make a cool lair for some Mini-Mutants, I suspect) might be a cool replacement for the fun but undersized Turtle Sub.

I remember coming across someone making a custom April out of a Monster high doll a while back on Deviant art. I'd imagine something like this would line up with the 12" (? Or 11". Forgot. P: ) playmates figures (and apparently maybe Reveltech? Don't remember how tall those are) . Hard to say though, because while I do own many Monster high and Ever after high dolls, my sis doesn't own any big turtle figures, so I can't be sure. Dang, now I wanna buy my own giant turtles and pose them with my dollies. And make some customs. Heh. This may have not been the most helpful post, but I'm trying.;)

BTW, here's the pics I was referring to:

Great topic! Here are some items that I think fit in very well with the TMNT:

- WWE accessories (especially weights, trash cans, chairs, dumpster, etc.)
- Tech Deck skateboards and BMX bikes. These are the perfect scale for TMNT toys. You could even use the ramps and stuff as they have an urban look to them.
- He-Man Castle Grayskull weapons rack and ladder.
- Dick Tracy, as cops and gang members
- Toxic Crusaders, for extra mutants
- Captain Planet figures (especially the bad guys) and Duke's Exploding Reactor playset
- Palisades Muppets Rizzo pizza accessoiry
- Spawn Alley playset

If you need a great home/hideout for your Casey Jones pick this playset. Pairs well with the Slamboni. Looks great.

It's designed like the top of the Empire State building....'nuff said. I use it just as part of my growing skyline and it makes a great crime boss hideout, like for a kingpin. (See what I did there?) Anyway Usually have Hun and Purple Dragons in there.

The next two are more like a hodge podge of stuff there's two Tech Deck ramps and a street basketball half court from the NBA Heroes line, Fastlane RC makes great scale vehicles like garbage and service trucks, street lamp from a movie Spiderman toy line, and finally some MiWorld accessories sprinkled about
http://i66.tinypic.com/2uoiddy.jpg

Lastly *sigh* where do I start? Ok of course I have the Z-Line sets, the bike shop is actually a Flick Trix carrying case. Snatched the top off the current turtle lair, Spawn Alley playset, Spiderman alleyway playset and atop the bike shop is the Tomb Raider set I mentioned earlier. Defiants Flex Terrain in front of the Spawn Alley. Hardees had some x-men figure kid's meals when I was a kid in the 90s and I used the bases to stand figures on because I have carpet in this room. Also looks good to simulate broken ground fx like a cheap version of the Tamashii Nations stuff lol.

Hahaha cool! The billboard just fits right up there doesn't it? Lol. That's cool you went the realistic route, figure wise...and your customs are awesome! I just love that Cyborg Donatello... OMG. I wish you'd give all the brothers the Borg treatment! Must make it so much easier to add/find civilian figures. My difficulty has been my OCD making sure all my figures match and have the right amount of toon aesthetic. I find lots of good figures but they're always out of scale.

Yeah I have both Nick and Movie Turtles. I tried to keep a more toon aesthetic with the Nick stuff, but I find myself really digging the Movie realism, and that limits world building, but it also keeps it a bit more manageable in numbers. I use Valejo Acryls, Model Masters Acryls (primarily because those are readily available at Hobby Lobby) and occasionally Games Workshops Citadel Acryls (those I have to order online, so those are honestly rarely used). As far as big display pieces go like on my dioramas I use the cheapo Acryl paint from Wal-Mart. I'm also a big fan of spray paint for things such as my vehicles.

I like the scale of the Classics best, but the closest to a stylistic match is probably the Michael Bay Leo. Maybe get the Secret of the Ooze Classics and see if they're a good aesthetic match for the Ghostbusters?

Diamond Select figures can be really huge, might be one of the few instances where the Classics Turtles' size is appropriate. I'd go for the Movie Classics over the Toon Classics, their proportions are more fitting with figures that are more realistic in design.

And then change them out whenever NECA makes their 7" version of the Henson figures.

The NECA Comic Turtles could work as well, but they do seem a bit small in comparison.

I'd planned for weeks or perhaps months to buy the Stellosphere, but when I finally got the space Turtles I was pretty disappointed in them, so I haven't been able to justify the $40 purchase.

For what it's worth, though, I wasn't going to place them inside it. Instead, I was going to have them exploring in the foreground with the Stellopshere in the background. I'd intended to use my usual rocky backdrop, colored red via editing tools on PicMonkey to suggest Mars, as in these two photos:

Whoa! I somehow missed this one. Awesome work!

Now then... way back at the start of this thread, I wrote:

I visited a Target during a business trip to Minneapolis last week and noticed that a spaceship called the "Stellosphere" (from some Disney, Jr. show or another) is reduced to $40. That might sound pricey, but I suspect it would be a very cool substitute for the nicely sculpted but comically undersized Fugitoid ship...

...and now, five months later (!!!), I finally caved 'cause Wal-Mart had one lonely, dusty Stellosphere for $25 rather than $40.

Here's the Stellosphere:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8883/28639027160_10734fb559.jpg

https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8002/28819214542_c64f4f899b.jpg

Still much smaller than the Fugitoid ship should be, of course, and a ridiculous purchase even at $25 considering I'm only going to use it in the background of a portrait of the space Turtles, but sometimes you have to go for it just to satisfy your curiosity.

If you're intrigued by this notion but you have more ambitious plans than simply using the Stellosphere as a prop, you should know that Playmates Turtles will not fit in the cockpit without some modifications.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8632/28639024320_24473d11c3.jpg

Even sideways, they're too tall:

https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8598/28639023290_6f3be0fc90.jpg

A friend asked about removing the chairs, but they're at the level of the floor, so that wouldn't help:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8293/28639022240_66657d3dab.jpg

(That's Space Mikey's weird dayglo "nunchuck" accessory for scale).

Of course, you could use other options:

https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8634/28639021090_10479cb6e3.jpg

And here's the actual figure that is included with the Stellosphere:

https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8343/28308569773_3f4dc5d821.jpg

His size reminds me of the cute, misshapen Half-Shell Heroes figures, which might also be a good fit.

And for what it's worth, there is some interior space that's viable:

https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7645/28848320961_38132e63bc.jpg

And if you're determined to fit figures in the cockpit and don't want to break out the Dremel, you can take out some screws in order to remove the floor piece entirely:

https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8374/28639019250_ccedd46b23.jpg

It creates a pretty ugly scene, but perhaps you can creatively work around it. It's to scale, whatever the case:

Here again for reference is the actual Fugitoid ship, which is barely larger than Mikey:

https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7558/28639025070_4273cb1eda.jpg

Now I just need to bring it to my usual setting beneath the Perrine Bridge for some proper shots. Unfortunately, I find the chrome-laden space-themed figures with their soft head sculpts quite difficult to photograph. Here are some test shots:

I wasn't a big fan of The Next Mutation or later Power Rangers series, but I liked the idea of their crossover episodes. I was a big fan of the MMPR, but the Figuarts figures were too expensive. I bought the new $20 Legacy Red and Green Rangers and I really like them. I hope they scale better with the Figuarts Turtles because the Classics TMNT seem a tad too large.

Not sure how to add a picture (not sure of a direct link for it anyways) but I have a TARDIS and the 10th Doctor on the shelf with my various Turtles... NECA and the rest... seems to fit well as far as size with the basic Turtles...

Not sure how to add a picture...

Do you have a specific site you use to upload and store your photos? I can give you a brief tutorial, if you like. It's easier than you think.

Build-a-Bear skateboard works pretty nice with NECA 1/4 Turtles:

And no surprise, since it's NECA and it's quarter-scale, but Gandalf's gear works great with Donnie, too, if you want to adapt his LARP look to the 1990 Henson universe:

WILL be getting this.... (Spider-Man playset)
https://youtu.be/qdrF9o8LRaM

...I wanna say this is the same designer of the Nick lair and the Batman v Superman playset. They just seem so similar...also the figures in that line are in scale with playmates turtles. That Spider-Man line also had some other small playsets that I think will work.

That's a pretty sweet looking playset.
