Unfortunately, the QR codes don't work to add friends; they only give you the ability to put that specific Mii in a Miifoto.

Right now you can only add friends that you follow on Facebook or Twitter, or that you spend an email invite to.

That sucks, I liked it. It just needed something else. This solidifies that I won't ever be spending money on their mobile apps, well except Mario Run which I already bought... But yeah I'm thinking about dropping Animal Crossing, not much to do and I feel I accomplished most things already.
