New gameplay details have emerged for The Last Guardian, Sony's hotly anticipated action-adventure game.

Issue 294 of Edge Magazine has early impressions and an interview with designer Fumito Ueda.

The main character will have a "mirrored shield," which can shine a beam of light that acts as a marker for the creature, Trico, to fire a red lightning beam from his tail. Edge's demo used this mechanic to solve environmental puzzles such as removing wooden walls and destroying rock faces.

According to Edge, Trico will apparently be a "free-spirited creature that fragrantly disregards your attempts to tame it." This lack of complete control of the creature is important to Ueda "because there are a lot out there where you can do that. I think I've had enough of them."

As the game goes on, the relationship between the boy and Trico will improve and he will be more likely to carry out your commands.

Edge says Trico is powerful, yet timid. Being part-cat, it is reluctant to jump into water, and its eyes will change color to reflect its mood. "The role of the creature is ambiguous," said Ueda, "...and it doesn't always do what you ask it to do."

So far Sony has been withholding The Last Guardian footage to preserve the story. However we can expect to see more of The Last Guardian at E3 this year.
