View Full Version : The BlueBandana Original Art Collection

Hi there everyone. I have been slowly building my collection of original art and sketches for a few years, and have finally got round to scanning and/or photographing most of it. I might decide to create a CAF account sometime in the future but, until then, I will be uploading photos of the pieces I have so far to this thread. Hope you all enjoy looking at my collection, and all comments are welcome!

EDIT: I am now slowly adding a lot of my OA collection to my CAF account:

As you can probably tell from my username, Leonardo is my fave turtle, and a lot of my art collection revolves around him. One of the first pieces of original art I got was purchased directly from Sophie Campbell. The original Leo micro is probably my favourite Mirage issue of all time, and the IDW issue is fantastic. In my opinion, Sophie is the best TMNT IDW artist to date, and I'm proud to own some of her artwork. This is the cover to her Leonardo micro, I love the atmosphere and grittiness!

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4529/38507599611_d944b5b10f_b.jpg

When I purchased the Leonardo micro cover from Sophie, I also bought 3 pages from the issue as well. Sophie also did this cool sketch for me, which has gradually became one of the overriding themes of my art collection, e.g. black and white pieces with the bandana colored blue (also the origin of my username). I love the intensity of Leo's stare.

And here are the 3 pages from the Leo micro issue by Sophie Campbell, they're pages 14, 15 and 16. I didn't want to lose too many details in each page, so apologies for the size of the image.

Hey man, if she's you're fave non-Mirager, you're going to love this thread :) Thanks for your comment!

This is an amazing Leo versus Shredder piece that Sophie kindly did for me on a Brett'sComicPile blank. I later got Kevin to sign it for me :tsmile:

Dang, Leo is surrounded. I just get a little nervous for him thinking about that approaching battle. But his face doesn't show one glimmer of doubt. Bravery. Awesome piece.

It is a cool bandana. I'm digging the tattered edge look with it and the black stripe starting behind his eye. Look forward to seeing more.

Here is another Leo piece from Sophie that fits in with my "black and white art with bandana colored blue" theme, unfortunately it was too long to fit in the scanner.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4524/24635490068_06f333dd8a_b.jpg

On the back is a prelim done in pencil.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4568/38451977726_ff2b670a89_b.jpg

And here is the piece framed alongside the Leo cover. I framed it myself and I'm not really happy with how it looks at the moment, so I'll be getting it professionally framed sometime soon.

Thanks to everyone for commenting on what I've shared so far, as well as for being so welcoming!

Up next is one of my most prized pieces of TMNT artwork, this is Kevin's 11x17 cover for issue #14 of the IDW series. I think this is one of the first covers of the IDW run to feature all four turtles with Splinter. Interestingly, April and Casey are not in the published version.

Sophies is my favorite non-Mirager

She did covers for the Raphael: Bad Moon Rising miniseries as well as some Tales of the TMNT frontispieces, so she counts as a Mirager as far as I'm concerned. :tgrin:

Very jealous of these pieces! The Leonardo micro cover in particular is probably one of my all-time favourite TMNT covers.

Great stuff so far, welcome to the fold! Steph (PangolinFeets) should enjoy your stuff (surprised she hasn't commented yet heh) as she is a big Sophie Campbell fan too. Hopefully you'd like the two pieces I also own by her: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerydetailsearch.asp?artist=Sophie+Campbell&GCat=43641

unfortunately it was too long to fit in the scanner.
This is why I've begun to take a number of my pieces to work with me and use the scanner/photocopier there, it has a glass just over A3 in size. And rescan some of the stuff I did before for better images, but not everyone is going to have the option there!

I must admit I did not realise this, I did enjoy the covers to that series.

Dude, great stuff. I love Sophie's stuff too. He covers are bad ass. Plus, we're (I own the original art to SHotFC variant cover) some of the lucky few to own colored work by Sophie. After SHotFC, I think she just did B&W.

Great collection, Campbell, Talbot and Eastman. All artists that I think are essential to any TMNT OA collector.

Wow, I never realized it until you said anything but now I totally recognize those Raph: Bad Moon Rising covers as Campbell's work. Very distinctive artstyle.

Pretty lousy miniseries, though. :tlol:

Hi there, I know I recognized your name, I've gone through your CAF gallery! I have a lot more pieces by Sophie you might enjoy seeing, for example the Leo splash page from the Northampton arc. I purchased this page directly from Sophie and asked her if she would be open to coloring it for me since I prefer her colors to Rhonda's. Sophie thought it was a cool idea, although she stopped working on it after the page started to buckle under the weight of the watercolors. It looks stunning in person, a very unique piece.

Thanks for the nice comments, I always hope people enjoy seeing the stuff I put up in my CAF portfolio :)

As for watercolours, I suspect it depends on what type and how much are used. I've got some new Stan Sakai coloured pieces that are on Bristol no much thicker than that used by Sophie, and they are fine, but I do have a piece by him that has buckled a bit too (http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=874324). Possibly changed watercolours over the years. Most of Stan's modern watercolours for the trade books (covers and tip-in plates) are on 4-ply or 5-ply board, much thicker and can withstand repeated water paint strokes.

I know what you mean, that whole situation is so messed up. I got onto Farley's list the day Archon_Turtle started the thread about him offering commission spots back in August 2012. I waited over 2 years and sent countless emails about my pieces, so I'm very thankful I eventually received them. It sucks that others are still waiting for theirs.

Here's a commission I set up with Dan Duncan. I LOVED the front cover artwork for the IDW Collection Volume 1 hardback, but alas it was sold before I could get my hands on it. I mentioned this to Dan and he said he'd be happy to re-draw the cover to fit in with my "black and white art with bandana colored blue" theme, it really pops!

Best turtle confirmed. :tlol: At least one of mine perfectly matches yours, a Campbell piece in black/white with a colored mask (but I have a few con sketches like that too!). Good taste, yo! Here is an inked sketch by Kevin of the four turtles on the back of a Strathmore 11x17 comic art page. It was done at the Heavy Metal booth at SDCC sometime around the mid-2000s, with Simon Bisley adding some shading as the pair were chatting together (mostly Raph's and Mikey's legs). It was originally a black and white piece until I saw Kevin earlier this year, when I asked him to color the bandanas for me.

Here's a cool piece from Eric. If you follow him on Facebook, you'll probably have seen a set of commissions he did for someone late last year based on the idea of each of the four turtles drawn in the same iconic Spidey pose that McFarlane did for the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #300. Since that particular ASM issue is also a personal fave of mine, I asked Eric if he would be open to drawing a Leo for me in the same vein. He said he would on the proviso that he could do a slightly different background for me, so he added buildings and an orangey-red twilight sky.

My collection is mostly comics and OA, but I have some figures and other random stuff too. I know how much you like the figures so here's some of mine :tsmile:

I also have a few TMNT shirts, I took a photo of some of them alongside my vintage McFarlane Spidey shirt.

Haven't uploaded anything for a while so thought I'd share something that Sophie did for me back in 2013. This piece was done in two separate stints, the first without any background or the bandanas colored red. A scan of a work-in-progress version of the piece can be found on Sophie's DeviantArt page here:

http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/art/vigil-351924534

This WIP scan was included in a TMNTEntity article discussing the different TMNT Volume 1 issue #1 cover homages:

http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2013/06/awesome-turtle-picture-020.html

Since its completion, the finished piece was also signed by Kevin!

Here's another TMNT #1 cover homage from my collection, this one was done by Dan Duncan! I asked him to draw the piece as "Mirage-y" as possible, he said he enjoyed drawing the cover closer to how the original version looked, as opposed to the version he did for the cover to IDW #12.

How are you thinking of displaying these? I was looking at getting one myself but the only thing I could think was a double sided frame with the comic book open so you can display the signed cover one side and the sketch on the other but not sure if it would work.

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing, although it's a little more complicated in this instance since these particular sketches are horizontal and the cover of the book going into the frame would be vertical :tgrumble:

On the other hand, I've just bought a non-TMNT grail that came already matted and framed, so I might just hang that on the wall instead, and I can keep the 2 TMNT sketches in my longbox, heh. Here's a photo of my new grail, finally I own something by JSC!

You're totally right, Sophie is immensely talented. Sadly, I don't think she's taking commissions at the moment. I can't wait to see her new work on TMNT Universe though!

In other news, I received something cool a couple of days ago for my collection. I'm a huge fan of Paolo Rivera's work on Spider-Man and Daredevil, and getting a TMNT and a Dark Knight Returns Batman commission from him has been on my bucket-list for some time. If anyone has seen his painted Sideshow Collectibles print, you'll already know how amazingly Zulli-esque his turtles look! I hope IDW contacts him about a variant cover sometime in the near future.

Unfortunately, I didn't win the auction last week for the painted Mikey cover that Paolo did for the Hero Initiative (by 50 bucks, arggggh!), so instead I got a copy of the print from his website. Here's a link in case anyone is interested in one:

http://paolorivera.bigcartel.com/product/michelangelo-print

As I was talking with Paolo about the auction and how I had lost my chance of owning such an epic Mikey piece, he told me he'd throw in the thumbnail prelim with my print, what a great guy! You can see the prelim in the top right of this photo, it's roughly 3x3 inches:

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4569/37792228234_22746ba893_b.jpg

Here's a hi-res scan:

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4553/37620837725_5f6a6c7507_b.jpg

After opening the package, I was surprised to find that Paolo had drawn a mini-Leo for me on the back of the prelim since he knows Leo is my fave turtle, what an awesome bonus.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4538/38507598931_b008704d4a_b.jpg

Lastly, if the winner of the auction is reading this post, congrats on winning such a stunning piece of art :tcool:
