The way they release stuff, might be better to have a Dream Ex thread for all.
Man I hope they do all the classic villains, would love a Rat King and Leatherhead.

I am sold on these figures, did someone mention in the Post that DReam EX will be bringing turtles as well?
very nice styling on both.
James Avery would be proud of that Shredder. Finally these 3rd party Companies make him out as the bad-arse he should be for once.

I don't get the above comment. These are officially licensed products, and not third party unlicensed ones. They are as legit' as any Playmates figures are.
As for price: for a 1:6 product these are fantastic. The company have hit a great mid way mark in the price point.
Hot Toys and Sideshow can set you back upwards of $300 now. These DreamEx figures look like they will come off well, at not feel like sub par to these other, established companies.

I think he thinks third party means illegitimately made or bootleg. But that's not the case. Pretty much any company who isn't Playmates is technically third party, right?

Playmates are the master license holder.
DreamEx will take out a license to produce the product directly from Nick, in much the same way as Big Chief take out a license from the BBC to make Doctor Who figures.

Depending upon the wheels within wheels, we will never know how many parties are involved. When dealing with lawyers you could have the company being a sixth party!! Haha.

I think it's just that the term , "third party" is used to identify unlicensed product, specifically in this hobby.

Yeah, 3rd party typically mean the party thats neither the company acquired the license nor the license holder.
They often get away by making certain characters but not featuring their real names or logos. Basically a loop. Hole to make something that is otherwise illegal for the most part. Example would be the First Gokun series

These are third party. Viacom is the primary license holder, playmates is second party, ergo dream ex, mondo, neca, et al are all 3rd party licensees. The term you're looking for with regards to first gokin is "bootlegger". Albeit bootlegs that greatly exceed the quality of the second party license holder.

Yeah, that's what I thought...

So if I understand that right, Playmates still makes a profit when all these other companies like NECA and DreamEX sell their toys? I'm disappointed if that's true, Playmates doesn't deserve the money of other companies who make quality figures.

That can't be true. If Playmates was making money from everyone else's efforts, I can't imagine they'd be such a pain in NECA's ass. It'd be much easier for them to sit back and rake in their cut of the profits.

Lisencing is a complicated business.
The thing is that the term "third party" when used by collectors in the toy business (and other lisenced areas) simply refers to those products that are not lisenced. It can't be compared to a legal term per say.

As for who gets a cut of what profits: that's all down to the individuals involved.

I think that's where the term "third party" came from (in the toys business):

"A third-party Transformer toy is a transformable toy created / intended to be part of the Transformers series by an unlicensed 3rd party toy company. These toys can be completely original designs, new molds based on existing characters, add-on sets for existing Transformers toys."
