View Full Version : How would you have done TMNT III?

It goes without saying that TMNT III is the worst of the original Turtles film trilogy as well as the worst Turtles film ever, and for good reason. The writing is inane, the puppetry is laughable, none of the villains from the OT or even the original comic make an appearance, and the tone became so dumbed down and so childish to the point where it got downright embarrassing. However, let's say that in an alternate reality, that wasn't the case. If you were the ones put in charge, just how differently would you have done things in order to make a worthy follow-up to the original film and SOTO? Be sure to leave your thoughts and ideas below.

I'd have kept the story mostly the same, but used Renet instead of April, and have Norinaga be teamed with Savante Romero. Used an actual time scepter-like plot the way it should have been done. Oh, and brought back the Jim Henson puppets.

Definitely agree on the last one. I'm honestly not sure what was going through New Line's head, but there was literally NO reason for them to replace what the Creature Shop had already perfected.

The use of the samurai armor to cover the bodies was smart, you'd think the money saved on the body portion could have gone into the head portion but apparently not.

I liked the concept in the manga version where April had be loading the turtle's lair up with "presents" from the thrift store that were mostly junk, and when they time traveled some of those things came with them, and they used them in the past to make stuff. This is a solid concept, I think. The movie has the part where she pretends to be a witch but that's about it. So yeah, expand on that by having them build something in the past to gain the advantage.

The whole ancestors? maybe? stuff should probably have been made clear in some way, perhaps not until they got back home at the end but having it be very vague and unconfirmed is kind of lame. Have them save Yoshi from a certain death, figure out they were always going to have been there to save him to lead on to Hamato Yoshi existing, etc.

They could probably have done some kind of sword vs sword showdown with Leonardo and Norinaga and a similar modern (past) tech vs modern (present) tech one for Donatello and Walker. Something approaching deep about the march of progress and tried and true methods co-existing.

*Use the Jim Henson suits/animatronics.
*Use the voice cast from the second film for the Turtles.
*Pick which tone that you're going with...the third film wanted to be serious, but it wanted to be goofy/jokey as well. Personally, I'd go with the more serious route.
*Push it at least to PG-13 levels (or, if you know this is going to be the last one? Go for broke and go nuts on it with an R-rating).
*Perhaps, alone with the rating going up...also have the storyline deal with the characters having to grow up a little bit from kids (in the first two) to grown ups aka entering Adult Hood.
*I would treat it in the vein of action films of the time (mid 1990s) ala Speed, Broken Arrow, True Lies, etc. They had bits of humor throughout but also action sequences that were supplied with the help of a good/big budget. Explosions, pacing, etc. of those kind of action movies.
*Perhaps go with a story inspired by City of War (the final Death of the Shredder in SOTO causes all of the gangs to go haywire on New York, and it's up to the Turtles to clean it up.
*Maybe even go in the vein of The Warriors from back in the day, or what they're doing now with The Purge Anarchy & The Purge Election Year, and the Turtles have to navigate throughout the city while also trying to stay in the shadows.
*Create some actual/specific Brotherly Friendships between the Turtles. For example, actually show Mikey pulling a prank on Raph and then Raph wanting to get back at him. Raph helping Donnie fix something. Stuff that shows specific dynamics between Raph & Mikey, Don & Leo, Raph & Donnie, etc. to build the characters.

I'd do like the first TMNT but with CGI and more pizzas.

And no, I think the worst TMNT is Secret of the Ooze. At least TMNT3 had real fighting with weapons.

Secret of the Ooze, costume quality aside, is hand over fist sh*tier than TMNT 2. TMNT 2 was completely vapid and devoid of any of the heart or grit of the first movie, they don't even use their weapons, and Shredder doesn't shred. TMNT 3 wasn't like a tour de force or a return to form with the first film, but it did bring back a lot of the heart (and weapon usage) that was absent from 2.

Still terrible, of course. But way better garbage than 2.

But TMNT3 had terrible terrible antagonists. Just a couple of guys. Lord Noringa and Whittaker or whatever.

Good or bad, at least SotO had Shredder, Tatsu, Tokka, and Rahzar.

Actually, to take the conversation on a tangent...

What was the inspiration for TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze?

The first TMNT was obviously off the original Mirage run, with Issues #1, #10, #11, and the Leonardo and Raphael micro-issues.

TMNT III was a weak watered-down version of "Masks" (#47 and 47).

But TMNT II... no resemblance at all to the TCRI storyline from the comics, and Tokka and Rahzar are clearly "we won't let you use Bebop and Rocksteady but go ahead and use some new stupid hench mutants" mutants.

But there's zero actual story that can tie back to anything. Maybe if they'd actually had Professor Perry reveal himself as a Utrom...

Agreed on both counts, Cy. As for what I'd do differently, basically I would have made the connections between Whit and Casey, and the implied Yoshi connection more clear, and yes, I'd have used the Henson effects/puppets. Otherwise, I liked it just fine- though I might have made it a tad more serious in tone, given the subject.

So first the turtles will have pads colored their bandana colors because they took out Shredder and its some honor reward thing (really for continuity). There could be a scene where the turtles meet up with April at the beginning and tell her about their sweet new pads and stuff. Krang could be in his android body till the end. People could think he is some robotic being but we find out later that he's a chewed up piece of gum with a face. Just for ease of FX when using his brain puppet. Anyways Krang seeks to find the body of Super Shredder and revive him. Then he uses it to create genetic clones and he somehow mixes rocks in and creates the Rock Soldiers. The turtles are out at night when they see a building being destroyed. The turtles go to investigate inside and find the Rock Soldiers searching for an item known as 'Sutrainium.' A powerful source that could be used to charge the Technodrome. But the turtles don't know that yet. The turtles fight Tragg and Granitor (because they should exist if there are Rock Soldiers) but fail to beat them because they are literally giant combat rocks. The two along with their forces get away with the source and the turtles have to escape the crumbling building without any of the people escaping seeing them. Eventually somebody sees them. A newsperson (who was there reporting on the source) catches a picture of Don's leg and part of his shell. The turtles get back to the lair and tell Splinter of their conflict. April is at work when she is called to a meeting. There the newsperson (lets have her be Joan Grody cause Grody is a bitch) shows them all the pictures. April is shocked and walks out on the claim of either going to the bathroom, filing an important report, or the believes its all crap unlike everybody else. She warns the turtles of what is happening and they all at first think Mikey was caught in the picture and they told him off but then April tells them she saw purple pads on the leg and the turtles see it was Donnie, who was quiet since they heard the news. They ask him what happened and he explains that he fell through the floor and was pulling himself back up when she saw him. The turtles then tell him off when Splinter shows up and tells them it was everybody's fault for not working together in the escape and they attempt to formulate a plan to destroy the pictures and keep their identity safe. Meanwhile Krang is having his soldiers assemble the Technodrome in Dimension X when Shredder shows up asking him about what their real plan is. Krang explains that there was once many brain looking things like him called Utroms. They all lived in peace when one day a rocket from earth appeared on their planet. If anybody recalled that rocket that got lost at launch several years before in real life, that was it. The people inside came out and saw everything and freaked. They all eventually realized that the Utroms were peaceful. Krang himself did not like the look of things with these humans so he kept a close eye on them. One day the humans had repaired their rocket and were going to go home. The humans decided they wanted to take this technology back home with them but they did not ask the Utroms. They started stealing things when Krang caught them. He chased them (in his bubble walker) to their rocket. The Utroms had equipped the rocket with an extremely powerful engine that was unstable with the human technology. The humans tried to escape but Krang ended up breaking their ship. He killed the humans but he could not stop what happened next. The rocket that he was in had its engine explode and it destroyed all of the Utrom city. The part of the rocket that hadn't been destroyed was sent flying with Krang in it. There it hit the portal which the Utroms had generated for the humans to escape but because the city had been destroyed the portal had not been calibrated properly and Krang landed in Dimension X. He ended creating his android body and his lab at one point and found earth. Then he had investigated further and found out about Shredder and his mutation. From there is where the story had began in this movie. Krang tells Shredder to take Granitor (because in the '87 series I liked him more than Tragg, but Tragg is better than Granitor in the new series) and some Rock Soldier lackey's to NASA because they appeared to have recovered a piece of the rocket that somehow found its way back. Shredder questions Krang's intentions with it and Krang tells him he shall see soon enough and he should not be so nosy. Shredder gets suspicious of Krang and sets off with his group to get the junk. The turtles have formulated a plan to get the pictures and they put it into action. April walks into Grody's office and tells her that Burne (whatever that fat guy in the 2nd movie who bosses April around's name is) ordered her to make copies of the picture for the newspaper. Grody asks for proof but April says it was a favor and she has no proof. April promises she won't ruin them (as the plan says it is not her whos ruining them) and Grody grudgingly hands the photos over. April brings them to the copier that is next to a large vent that Donnie is hiding in. April starts scanning the pictures and Donnie breaks the machine open and rewires it so the machine burns out and ruins the pictures during scanning. He is successful and the turtles help him get out of the vents and escape. Grody claims April sabotaged her but the witnesses say it wasn't sabotage. Grody then decides that she needs to get more pictures of whatever that thing was when her and April are told to immediately head to the NASA headquarters to do a report on the piece of the rocket that vanished ages ago showing up again. They both mildly argue on their way their. When they get there they are filming when Shredder and his goons break in. Shredder throws several smoke grenades while the Rock Soldiers beat down the scientists. April uses a device that the turtles gave her in case of an emergency which alerts the turtles to the problem. They show up and see Shredder is alive. Raph curses in anger and charges at Shredder when Granitor interferes throwing him aside and alerting Shredder that they have found the piece of junk. Shredder tells him to move aside and to get it while he deals with his 'old friends.' The turtles engage in a fight and Grody (who cannot see because of the smoke) hears the fighting and takes out her tape recorded and records the voices. She gets closer and is able to get a blurred picture of Leonardo flying side kicking Shredder into a globe statue. April finds Grody and gets her out of their. The Rock Soldiers have recovered the piece and escape to Dimension X calling for Shredder. Shredder then knocks the turtles aside (who have almost beat him) and escapes through the portal. At the news center Grody only shows her picture and recorded tape to Burne who demands it is shown on the news with April reporting it because she is the top reporter. Grody says she wants to be on the air with April because it is her story and Burne agrees. When April is alerted about the situation she tells the turtles who have already formulated a plan to get past that portal and find out what Shredder is up to. Donnie then says he will hack the stream but asks for some additional information and the IP to a Channel 6 computer. April doesn't know the information but goes to get it. When she gets the information she is about to go back to the turtles when Burne tells her they are airing it early. April says she will go for it but freaks out realizing she has to immediately get the information to Donnie. She then uses her turtles alert which summons the turtles. They are almost seen and April quickly gives Donnie the information and tells him to use a computer there. The report starts and April keeps on blabbing and talking about filler stuff to give Donnie more time. He hacks into the main computers while the other turtles stand guard. Then the turtles hear a person approaching and they tell Donnie to hurry up because the person is coming. The person then enter and the turtles jump and hide on the ceiling when they see its Danny! they jump down and Donnie finshes hacking while the turtles explain to Danny whats going on and ask him why he's here. Danny explains that he got a job as an intern here yesterday and was getting some records about the spaceship and its disappearance. Donnie completes his mission and the news stream is shut down. The turtles ask Danny if he could make a copy of those files and give it to April to bring to them. Danny agrees happy to help his old friends and goes to do this while the turtles head back to the lair. Back in Dimension X Krang explains to Shredder that the piece of junk contained some old Utrom technology which he had to recover before the humans got to use it, but Shredder suspects its something else. He doesn't question Krang but keeps himself on high alert. Joan has given up on being suspicious to April and the story and goes about with her day. The turtles call April and tell her to take Danny and go to 49th Street along with a van and equipment and the files because they have a plan to get Shredder out of hiding. Donnie then says that he has tracked down and gotten a certain someones number. The turtles then call this person and he agrees to their plan. The turtles are about to leave when, surprise, surprise! Casey Jones shows up asking the turtles how their doing and whats been going on with the attacks lately. (Gonna put another post cause its too long)

They tell him everything that's happened and he agrees to help them as well. April and Danny are at 49th Street when Casey and the turtles show up. They all get in the van and the turtles explain their whole plan to broadcast a fake interview about the files and hope that Shredder in that Dimension picks up on it. April asks how their going to get the interview on stream and who they are going to be interviewing when they get to a lab. Everybody sneaks inside and gets upstairs. Leo does a special knock on one door and it opens to reveal... Professor Jordan Perry! He was the person Donnie had tracked down and called to help them with their plan. April contacts Burne saying that she needed an open time slot on the news to do an important interview with Jordan Perry who knows stuff about what happened at NASA. Burne agrees to have it as a breaking news segment. Danny and Casey both set up the equipment while Raph and Mikey stand guard and Leo and Donnie tell April and the Professor what to do. The interview rolls and April asks the Professor about why the criminals stole the piece of junk, Perry says it was for some malicious technological reasons and claims that they would not be able to figure it out without the files. He flips through the files only showing one unimportant buildup type of page and they talk about other unimportant stuff about the attack before the interview ends. They can only hope that Shredder caught it now. Meanwhile in Dimension X Krang has seen the interviews and tells Shredder to go after those files to see what they have and what he doesn't have. Shredder knows something is up because he recognizes Miss O Neil and Professor J. Perry but Krang assures him that there is nothing up and all he has to do is get the files and get back here. It is night and the turtles along with Casey are waiting for Shredder while the Professor works on his other things. Donnie decides to help the Professor while Mikey and Raph express their doubts about the files and how Shredder could use them and that they should've used a decoy. Leo says that it had nothing they could use in the files and it was pretty much like Lois Lowry's book 'Son' where they would build up but disappoint with useless things. All of a sudden there is a flash of light as a portal opens and Shredder steps out with Tragg, Granitor, and more Rock Soldiers. There is a battle and Granitor swipes the files and makes a break for the portal. Tragg and the other Soldiers escape and Shredder is about to as well when Casey sidesteps him and engages in a fight with him. Casey gets beaten up but manages to keep Shredder off to the side while the turtles get through the portal. Casey runs in himself and Shredder goes after him as the portal closes behind. The turtles end up in Dimension X when Casey falls through the portal. They take him and stealthily escape into a cave. Shredder comes through and cannot find the turtles. He heads to the Technodrome which has been completed. Donnie tends to Casey's wounds while the other 3 scout out to find Shredder. They then stumble upon a giant eyeball which its base in stuck in the ground. They go to get Don and Case and show them their discovery. Inside the Technodrome Shredder tells Krang about the turtles being in Dimension X when they see that they are at the Drome above ground right at the eyeball. Krang decides it is time to raise the Technodrome and begins the process. The ground shakes as the turtles and Casey fall through a giant crack in the ground and land on the side of the Drome. It comes out of the ground and begins rolling towards the portal hotspot as it generates and becomes bigger. The conquest of Earth has begun. Shredder sees that the turtles are hanging on the side but he doesn't alert Krang because now his plan has begun. He instead sends a small number of Rock Soldiers to go knock them off. The Rock Soldiers come out through a small hatch and climb across the outer hull. Casey sees them and takes out a metal bat and bashes 2 of them off. The other 2 remaining Soldiers attempt to get the turtles but Mikey throws some Shurikens at them causing them to loose their footing and fall. The 5 amigos edge their way over to the open hatch and get inside. Donnie gets to a computer and tries to figures out how to use it when a passing patrol sees the turtles and attacks them. The turtles (now with a new strategy) battle the Soldiers. Donnie decides he doesn't want to be left out of the fight and joins in. After beating them he manages to pull up a map of the Technodrome and they head through a transportation ventilation system to try to get to the command center where Shredder resides. As they go through they enter a complex where all the item transportation chutes meet up. As items fly past them they have to avoid getting crushed or causing a clog in the systems. Eventually Mikey finally has his slip up and causes a clog. A repair team of Rock Soldiers come in and see the turtles and Casey hot footing across the chutes to the one that leads to the command center. The start shooting at them but Leo and Raph coordinate the shots and eventually trick the Soldiers into taking themselves out when they blast out a chute above them. It comes crashing down on the Soldiers and the 5 get through the chute that leads to the command center. Casey is the first to get through and busts out of the system charging at a turned around throne. Krang then spins around in it and kicks Jones across the room as the turtles get through. Raph questions who Krang is and he explains himself. That is when he reveals himself to be a chewed up wad of gum. Shredder (watching from a platform above) is shocked to see this as he thought the Utroms looked like his android body. Shredder then decides he shall strike down upon both Krang and the turtles during their fight. They enter combat trying to take out Krang. Leo tells Donnie to get to the console to reprogram it but Donnie says the only way to stop it is to destroy the console. Casey then attempts to smash the thing but it doesn't work. Krang pulls him off of the console and smashes him on the ground as Leo and Mikey go for Krang's head. There is more fighting when Leo gives the other 4 a plan to get Krang's body to smash the console. Raph runs off to tear some giant cables in the room while the others distract Krang. He cuts the cables apart and the other 3 turtles and Casey get Krang closer to the console. Right then Raph jumps down and shoves the sparking wires into the damage spot in Krang's Android Body. It electrocutes the machine bringing down on the console and smashing it. Krang pops out of the center of the body but not without activating the self destruct on his suit. The Drome itself is starting to become unstable because the console has been destroyed and if Krang's suit goes boom then the whole thing crumbles. The turtles are about to kill Krang when Shredder comes down from his hiding spot bashing the 5 away. Krang tells Shredder to get him out of their but Shredder calls him a filthy lying octopus and puts him down. The Rock Soldiers are now here and are about to attack Shredder when he tells them that they were created from his mutated DNA therefore they obey him. He tells them to keep the turtles in the Technodrome while he makes his escape. Shredder leaves the room as the turtles and Casey beat down Tragg, Granitor, and the rest of the Rock Soldiers. They get to the chute and manage to escape from the hatch they came in from when they see a platform at the bottom open up and go down. Shredder runs out and the turtles and Casey are able to get down and stop him for the very final confrontation. The portal begins to close because Krang's body has exploded and the rest of the Drome is blowing up. Pieces of the Drome start to fall and the 4 turtles manage to beat Shredder down, only to have one large piece of debris collapse upon Shredder. The 5 then make their escape to the portal when they see Shredder break himself out of the rubble. But he is not quick enough as the entire Technodrome then explodes, killing him and all the Rock Soldiers inside. The turtles and Casey escape through the portal just in time, having finally destroyed Shredder. The portal closes as the 5 fall through into New York. They land in a conveniently placed pool and head into the sewers. They get home to see Splinter watching a April's news report which is talking about the portal that had opened. Splinter congratulates the turtles on finally destroying their lifelong nemesis and he says that they may be his equal now, but they are still welcome to call him Sensei. Mikey then says that they are forgetting something (and its not pizza because we can see them eating it randomly at various points in the movie.) April then ends her news report saying "This is April O Neil, Channel 6 News, signing off. Cowabunga Dudes!" Then Splinter says "Perhaps it is time for another Cowabunga?" and then all 4 turtles high five with everybody yelling "COOOOWWAAAABUNGAAAA!" and Splinter laughs and says he made another funny. *Roll Credits*

I thought the 3rd movie was alright. The only change was wishing Casey going with them...but the humor with him and the honor guards watching/playing hockey was a good alternative.

Donatello's humor was better than the other 2...also, in my opinion, Mikey was more serious...didn't agree with that.

If we have to stick with within the realms of the ancient Japan/samurai flick then I would've done something inspired by Seven Samurai and 13 Assassins. The Turtles are flung back in time by the scepter, and end up having to protect a defenseless village from the ancient version of The Foot. The feudal version of The Foot Clan could have some leader/lord who has a familial connection to Shredder and Splinter so there's a continuity/circle of life type element. The Turtles are looking for the scepter to try and get home when they discover some Foot bandits raiding a village.

The Turtles could serve as guardian "kappa" or "yokai" to the village and during the night defend the village from Foot Ninja, set up defenses, etc. until the preparations for the final battle when they have to reveal themselves to the villagers. Then they could teach and train them to fight against the invading Foot. The movie ends with a big battle with actual ninja and samurai action, the four brothers fighting The Foot alongside the village they've defended and befriended. Once the battle is over one of the elder villagers gifts them with "some old thing he found in the woods" - the scepter. The Turtles go home :tgrin:

I know Yoshi is a common Japanese name but what if that kid Yoshi was a ancestor of Hamato Yoshi like Whit is to Casey. What if he WAS Hamato Yoshi?
Most likely the ancestor

MsMarvelDuckie
08-04-2016, 06:21 PM
That has been discussex before. There was no surname given for Mitsu and Yoshi so it is entirely possible he was an ancestor- and their later alliance (through the implied future marriage of Mitsu to Kenshin) might have been the start of the Foot Clan. Or Hamato Yoshi's clan if it was different.
