I hardly see anyone posting in these. Although, they may have been more popular before I was here. But I don't know. So, why do we have them?

Social groups, it's all in the name. Join a group, be social with them.

Why do we have these social groups if no one is socializing in them?

Because they used to/are supposed to/can have the option/it encourages interpersonal friendships/lemonade was a popular drink & it still is

Because social networks allow interactions that would be impossible and improbable from a financial point of view ..

He means social groups on this site, not sites like Twitter or Facebook.
