View Full Version : Do you have a smartphone?

Do most people have smartphones nowadays? I have a classic cell phone. I prefer it to a smartphone, as I would find all the apps in it distracting. I only have an interest in using a mobile phone for calling/texting and my cell phone has enough features anyway.

Yes, most people have smartphones. You just gotta walk outside for a bit to see.

I have one and don't regret it. People take them for granted but smartphones are awesome.

I have an iphone 6. Is that a smartphone? I still call them "cell phones" because that's what they were called in the early 2000's. I don't know what the young kids of today call them now in this era.

Nope. Still have a little Samsung flip phone. I have a sizeable balance with Virgin Mobile and been considering getting a Samsung smartphone from them (since I can pay for it with the balance), but reviews I have read for it have too often talked about overheating problems, soooo I'll wait a bit still. Not really in any hurry. I hardly use my current phone as it is (hence the large balance), so it's hard to justify willingly switching to something that will cost a lot more.

Considering I still have an old 'grandfathered' plan that costs me only $20 per 3 months... switching to a smartphone that would force me to change plans to one that costs me $90 in the same time frame, 'upgrading' isn't really all that appealing.

Mostly I just need to use up some of the balance. Even if I likely eventually get one from them, I'll prob still wait a while to upgrade/activate it. If I wait and let the balance increase again, then the cost of a new one would come from that for a while, and save me from having monthly payments for a bit. That's the plan at least.

Either way, my flip phone would probably remain a glorified pocket watch for work, given that it's tougher and far more pocket sized.

Yes, pretty sure most phones that make you poke at the screen to use it is so-called "smart."

We actually call them "slingtangs". Like, "yo can I use your slingtang?"

He's right, you know.

The more "i's" your slingtang has, the smarter it is. That's why they keep upgrading.

I'm already saving aside a little each month for the new iPhone7. I really want that new slingtang.

I'd post the official definition of "slingtang" in Urban Dictionary but I didn't want to steal your thunder. Or credit. Or your thunder's credit.

NEVER steal Thor's credit cards. He's not very savvy with modern finance, but when he does finally find out...

Well, you'll quickly find out that lightning CAN strike twice. Or thrice. Or twenty times.

Why would you have to save up for it? I remember I got my iphone6 for just $1 through a Best Buy promotion.

I'd never pay $200+ for a cell phone.

I don't even have a cell phone.

I make on average maybe one phone call a week. There is just no reason for me to pay extra for a cell phone, my phone service is provided through my internet provider so I'm paying next to nothing for it.

If cell phones would function like pay phones, where you just pay as you use it, I'd consider getting one. I know about pre-paid phone cards, but if you don't use up those minutes in time then you lose the minutes. Since I'd only ever use a cell phone in case of emergencies, I'd be spending money for minutes that I might not ever even use.

If I don't even have use for a cell phone, I have even less use for a smart phone.

I would never pay for a phone itself. The phone bill alone is killing me. Verizon is god awful.

The catch is the phone is a dollar if you switch to a plan that's $100+ plus.

They do have rollover minutes on most phone providers now. And with prepaid you can not only pay for only what you tbink you need but roll them over too. That's what I did with my first cell. I went several months without even buying minutes because I still had plenty left.

Geez, Cubed you never heard of a pre-paid plan? Or "Bring your own phone"? You can use the same phone and # with a cheaper plan, so the rates won't kill you. I go prepaid monthly, with unlimited wverything(high speed for first 5G) and only pay 50$ a month- 100$ total for both our phones. And never run out. (Unless I dont renew at the end of the month. But I can put it in reserve so that doesnt happen.)

I still have my old flip phone because I can't use the touch screen. Seri doesn't do everything I need her to do, but maybe they'll change that one of these days. I'm okay with ol flippy for the time being.

You know, I still call them cell phones...but yeah, I do have a smartphone. I got the iPhone 4 back in 2012 because my boss at the time (when I lived in Nagai) told me to get some kind of a phone. I figured an iPhone would be the easiest to figure out since I had an iPod. lol

Back sometime in 2013, I got the iPhone 5. I went to the shop to get a new case, and the carrier I have (Softbank) had a section set up there and they started telling me about the iPhone 5. They said that it was faster than the 4, had 4G (I assumed this meant better since my 4 only had 3G) and that I could switch the service over to that for a low fee or whatever. So, I paid off the contract with the 4 and started using the 5. It also came with a free iPad, which is also why I decided to get it. I'd never had a tablet and...I rarely used it outside of work, but I'm starting to use it more now.

So now, I have two smartphones. The old iPhone 4 is still active with a different phone number. It's pretty much a back up for me and I don't go over $90 month for service with both phones combined, so it's no biggie. I hate not having a house phone, which is why I still have the other one active.

I don't plan on buying any other phones. I'll stick with what I have...well, while here in Japan anyway. I've never owned a cell stateside, 'cept for a prepaid phone I would keep in case of emergencies. No internet stuff, calls only.

It sucks that, back home, payphones have died out so much. Over here, you'll still find a payphone someplace. As surprising as it may sound, cell phones seem like more of a necessity back home than here.

I have Verizon and pay $57 a month. Its an absurd amount of money because it adds up over a year.

Disgusting. I barely even use my phone.

I don't go over the data though. You only have to pay extra if you use up all your data on the internet. Once mine says "90%" I stop right there till the month ends because I don't want to be charged an extra $15

MsMarvelDuckie
09-07-2016, 06:50 PM
That's why mine is unlimited. Even if I go over the high speed ceiling, I still get plenty of data with no charge. No limit on data or anything else, and no charges for going over the cap for high speed (4G speed, then 2G after that.) Sounds like it's time to switch plans Cubed!

CyberCubed

What's the monthly pay? Verizon is $57 even on 1gb. Its messed up.

MsMarvelDuckie
09-07-2016, 07:06 PM
Like I said I go prepaid so there is no contract, and the "plan" I use is 50$ for unlimited everything. You can even pick cheaper ones but with less high speed. 30 days with no overage charge, and can leave at any time or change phones? Win win. Matter of fact I am about to put a new phone for Mr. Duckie since the one I bought him a few months ago (not from them but on Amazon) just died. And he will still have the same #. I can use any phone I want, and just add it on my account and put airtime to activate it. Never had any issues either.

CyberCubed
09-07-2016, 07:18 PM
So if I'm reading that right, you still pay $50 a month regardless?

MsMarvelDuckie
09-07-2016, 09:55 PM
They have a couple of cheaper ones too from the company Im using (Net10). Theres a 40$ one that is high speed for the first 4G but still unlimited for instance. I just went for the one with more high speed usage. That is per phone of course but its still cheaper then some of the long term plans. And if you only have/need one phone its ideal. You should look into a prepaid plan- many of them are just as good as the "big" providers (and use the same cell towers and service) but less hassle. Ive never had problems with service or cost and I use my phone a lot. Even for tethering for my net!

I don't know what people call old mobile phones nowadays either. I have a Alcatel phone. The one thing I like about it over a smartphone is the buttons over the touchscreen. I thought the classic phones looked better, seemed stronger and more like I imagined an actual phone to be.

Its weird, why can't everyone just call them "phones?"

People have such weird names for electronic devices these days. Not to mention ipads, kindles, netbooks, and whatnot.

All these do-dads and gizmos, how's anyone supposed to keep track of this stuff? These young kids of today, they really are immersed in social media all the time. When I was a kid I didn't even have a cell phone in High School! And back then people used those old flip-top phones.
