2016 strikes again.

George Michael has "passed away peacefully at home", his publicist has said.

The 53-year-old rose to fame as a member of Wham!, known for their hits Club Tropicana and Last Christmas.

Michael - whose real name is Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou - sold more than 100 million albums throughout a career spanning almost four decades.

He was set to release a documentary in 2017,

In a statement, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

The worst thing about 2016 is how people now trivialize deaths under the guise of joking around.

RIP

Don't count your blessings just yet. There's still 6 days left of 2016. Fingers crossed that she makes it.

"If Carrie Fisher dies, it has to be at least on Jan. 1! If she dies before then, 2016 will really be ruined!"

This is why I think the "current year" mentality is just another way of trivializing and belittling events that have happened this year, big or small.

It really seems like folks actually believe people won't die in 2017.

RIP George.

Part of me will always love Father Figure, along with I Want Your S*x. It sounds like White Light might be another track that I might also enjoy (since I'm currently listening to that track right now.)

Goodbye man and thank you.

Praise always to the man who started the trend of artists not starring in their videos. "Too Sexy" was a formative experience for little plas.

Yeah, it's complete nonsense. 2016 has already been a crap year thanks to literally any one of the other things that have happened. Human beings dying once they reached certain ages or from certain conditions was inevitable.

And for those people with that mentality, 2017 will be "ruined" on the very first day if she does die. So they're screwed either way. Regardless, it will be a very sad day indeed.

My mum's pretty upset about George Michael, she loved him back in the day.

I hadn't heard of him in years.

He pretty much self-destructed in his last few years, spent eight weeks in UK jail once for drunk driving.

Same here. I liked his voice and a few of his songs, though.

"For most of his adult life he was a drug user, admitting to smoking 25 joints a day back in the 80's.

His later years it's said he was into crack cocaine and heroin.

The last few years of his life he spent as a recluse refusing to hardly ever go out of his house after putting on weight""

Like with Elvis
