VHS, VCRs were all the rage back in the 90s.

Dude, everyone had a VHS in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's.

DVDs didn't truly become mainstream till around 2004-2005 or so. People were still buying VHS tapes early into the 2000's.

Sounds about right, to my recollection.

Beta as a little kid (which sucked because at the video store all the good titles were VHS) and then moved on around 89 or so I think.

Didn't have a DVD player until the mid 2000's, I'm pretty sure.

They might have become mainstream a bit earlier than that. I remember being at a Best Buy in late 2003 where someone asked for Finding Nemo on VHS. The associate told the guy that they no longer sell VHS. I didn't even realize that they stopped stocking VHS movies until he said that. I also checked other stores like Target, Circuit City, and Walmart, and even they were following suit.

I also still have a VCR. In fact, I have two, for when I wanted to copy things. The material I have on VHS probably won't ever make it to DVD. So I've been using my mother's DVD recorder to transfer that material to blank DVDs.

I didn't have one until 2002.

VHS, of course. I remember having to watch Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie on VHS because I wasn't old enough to go see it in cinemas. How silly is that? A child couldn't go see a Spider-Man movie!

This might be a stupid question, but was it your parents who claimed you were too young?

You're not alone. How many of us didn't watch films on videotapes we weren't allowed to see in cinemas because it was rated 15 or something? It was just walking into the videoshop together with someone older and buy or rent the film . :)

Nope. I actually was too young. Spider-Man was a 12 in the UK (that's PG-13 in the US, I think?) and the 12A rating hadn't yet been introduced.

Just sharin' a story. :) And this was a 12. :P

I bought my first DVD-player in January or February 2004. Probably bought my last videotapes in mid-2003 or something.
