Are the TMNT annuals in the wrong place in the IDW collected editions from a chronological point of view and should be read in diff order than collected?

I just took note of this today as well. It's been YEARS since I considered the placement of the 2012 book, but off the top of my head, I think it still has to be read before SHOTFC. I'll check on that though.

The 2014 book is exactly where intended.

IDW has placed the 2012 Annual in two different places, officially. Their trade paperback reading order (http://www.idwpublishing.com/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-reading-guide-fall-2015/) sticks it between #14 and #15. Their IDW Collection Vol. 3 hardcover sticks it between #20 and #21.

It's a fairly standalone story that acts as a prelude to City Fall, so it reads fine in either slot. So I wouldn't say either one is "wrong". (I like the #14/15 placement better, personally, since it spreads out the City Fall buildup a bit more instead of cramming it all to right before the event.)

The 2014 Annual is placed between #32 and #33 in the IDW Collection Vol. 4. Right where it belongs.

The 2014 Annual is placed between #33 and #34 in the IDW Collection Vol. 4. A little weird, and kinda breaks up the flow of the "Monsters, Misfits and Madmen" storyline, but there's nothing contradictory in there, I don't think. Personally, I think it reads better between #32 and #33 as a break between arcs, but that's just me.

Did they really do that? I don't own it (just keep my floppies), but the list of issues I saw had it before #33.

If they did that's a flub. "Monsters, Misfits and Madmen" takes place all in one night.

Derp.

Somehow misread this post (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1658397&postcount=5).

IDW Collection Vol. 4 has it between #32 and #33!

Aha, I just remebered that we placed Annual 2012 between #14 and #15 because they're still operating out of The Second Time Around shop, and they moved in to the church shortly after #16.

Nothing else really gives any clues. Except the fact that Leo recognizes Karai from a distance by her body language alone in SHOTFC #2, so them having fought twice (#12 and Annual) works better than just once.

So they moved it just to help the page-count jive better, basically. You can read it that way, but true placement is before #15.

Thank you all for the quick replies and info.. one last question .. I know it is not canon.. but I would like pretend for my own future reading order that Batman TMNT is canon.. now that we are further down the line, has anyone got a perfect place for it from a chronilogical point of view?if we pretend its canon? 😃

There really isn't a perfect slot for it; it would disrupt things too much.

But the best wriggle room I could think of is after TMNT #37 (when Shredder and Krang declare war on each other) and before TMNT #41 (when the Attack on Technodrome and Vengeance storylines start in full force). Maybe between #40 and the Ghostbusters crossover, given how faulty Harold's dimensional transporter is.

There are problems, though, like the Turtles taking Shredder back to their world as a prisoner and him being free next time we see him in the main series, to say nothing of the alliance between Donatello and the Foot that had been building up before Attack on Technodrome.

Like I said, there's a spot where the setting of it aligns, but nowhere it can go that won't disrupt the storyline in some way.

The annuals are cool, and I enjoy them and I'm thankful for them, but man... they are kinda hard to get through for some reason.

I started reading the 2012 annual sometime last year and then like 12-16 pages in I had to do something. I've not gone back to it since and seeing peoples thoughts about the annuals worries me. Thought I could at least read more Eastman TMNT but then I still have not gone back on them even though I know where they are. Hopefully soon I read them finally.

Mainly because Eastman's writing doesn't really fit the IDW universe. He writes long winded stories where not much happens and then rush whatever plotpoints he's trying to do in the last few pages.

I loved 2012 way more than 2014. Mechanically 2014 fails just because of the fact that you can't tell which Turtle is talking.
