View Full Version : 1990 Movie Classic Collection Figures, Head Re-Sculpt: Update

Hey everyone. Nearly 2 years have gone by, since I've last shared an update on my little pet project here. Unfortunately, work and life in general, took hold of my time, from my hobbies and progress has been majorly slow. :tsad:

Well, since then, new life changes has granted me some time to regain focus on this little project. I actually went ahead and scrapped my first sculpt to start over again, as I really wasn't happy with it, despite the forum's approval (thank you btw!). I just felt I could do better.
So, I worked hard, trying to capture that quintessential look for my Donnie, working off many screen caps and promotional images.
Once I was able to get it as far as I could, I pursued making a few test casts.
Then I added some paint. Nothing overly refined. Just enough to sit well with an unpainted body.

Despite the fact that NECA, is putting out the nicest and most accurate 90s movie figures out there, I still wanted to fix my Playmate's line. I really do like their articulated bodies and I'm more of a standard action figure size collector too. (plus I can't really drop that much cash for giant toys right now).

So far, this is what the new Donnie sculpt, looks like. It fits right over the ball joint and has a little more movement than the standard head. Mine actually swivels all around. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to look and I hope you like the pics. (please let me know if the pics are too big. I'll resize them).

The new sculpt, ready for the mold process:

(direct link to image:http://www.narcomics.net/tmnt-head-sculpts/new-sculpts/test-casts-tooling.jpg)

Developed a green paint that matched the plastic tone on the bodies, though some were left out to be given a full film accurate paint job, which would require the entire body to be repainted as well. Any pin holes found, were patched up before the next step:

I am now working on my Raphael. I tossed out the old sculpt to start a new one and will do my best to capture his likeness. No ETA at this time. Whenever time permits, I will finish him. Pictures of that project, will come when I feel it's getting close.

I am lucky enough to have been sent a painted prototype of this head, and let me tell you from firsthand knowledge: it is incredible. The level of detail and accuracy Nar has achieved here is top-notch, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that Donnie's likeness here is on par with NECA's Donnie, just on a much, much smaller scale (I have both the NECA Donnie and Nar's prototype head - attached to my Playmates classics figure - sitting on my desk, fyi...)
The 1990 Henson turtles have been my favorite incarnation of the turtles my whole life, so naturally I was super pumped when NECA started their line. However, I know that the price tag and the scale of those figures make them difficult if not impossible for many fans to buy. If that applies to you and if you get a chance to get one of these head sculpts here (assuming Nar makes them available for purchase), do it. You won't be disappointed, and that tiny, sad hole in your heart from not having Henson turtle figures that will fit in your house will be fulfilled. :tlol:
Excellent work, Nar, truly! Thank you so much for the prototype! :tgrin:

Fantastic work, but they clash way too much with the body to be a proper replacement.

Thanks for your kind words! :) Yeah, blurring the lines between hyper realistic and cartoonish stylization, was not easy. So, I agree, the head sculpt does inspire a full body repaint. I've sent out a few samples to some very talented toy artists, I've met on instagram, who will be giving their entire figure, the full repaint treatment and I will be doing the same for mine, once I'm done with the rest of the bros. Honest question... do you guys think I should just quit this project? The only reason I'm doing this, is simply because I couldn't stomach the original heads on these toys and as far as I'm concerned, NECA has no current plans to release a smaller version of their beautiful 18 inch figures and if they ever do, it probably won't be happening until next year. However...if they do release 6 inch versions of their 18 figures sooner than later, then there's obviously no point for me to continue, as we'll just buy those.
Anyways, I had fun with it and learned a great deal, working with with these materials. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. I'll be back when I have more updates. :-]

Neca says it's unlikely for these to be made smaller, so I say go for it. These look amazing and shows just how bad playmates screwed those heads up.

If you have enjoyed the road this far, I say go with it!
The head turned out so well that a complete overhaul can only be magic.
Sure Neca is doing their gigant one (wich look awesome and I'm getting) but these are made by YOUR talent and passion, are more displayable due to size and still very pose friendly.
Extraordinary job, don't quit it!

The first two heads (painted and unpainted) will go up on ebay. This will help me decide a fair price for them, whatever it may be. Then I can simply take inquiries directly, through any hub or forum I'm using. This will only be for a limited time though, as I don't intend to make bank on these.

I'll be posting a link here when they become available. You can also follow me on instagram if you wish, since I make updates there too.

The mold was successful. Much better than my first attempt. A little tricky when combining the peg hole impression from a factory head and bonding it to one of the two-part silicone molds. I managed to cast a few heads and it was nice not having to do any heavy clean up work, besides shaving off air gates and pour spouts. :)

Raph is getting worked on some more and hope to have that done by the end of next week. Here's a couple of pics I took, which I added some color tinting via Photoshop, to help give me an idea of how it may look, once it's painted.
Still a ways to go, but it's coming along. I'm using all my screen grabs and reference pics to help me get it right. Hope you guys like it.. so far.
Have a great weekend shell brains! ;)

Thanks guys, I'm really glad you like them. As part of my ongoing pursuit for "reasonable accuracy", I'm also going to re-sculpt the hands and feet, as well as the plastron, which may be cast in a very soft pre-tinted resin plastic. I feel like the plastron pieces on these toys, make the turtles look a bit rounded in the mid section. They're also slightly wider than they should be. The very last thing I will do with these, is re-do their weapons, to match the screen used props, as well as whole new belts to properly store them in.
On Donny, his Bo holster is in the wrong position. It should be sitting on the back end of the shoulder strap at an angle.
Same with Raph's sai holsters. They need to be curved a bit so they steer clear from his upper thighs.

I can't give specifics on when what will be done, considering this is a side hobby I'm playing with in between my actual job, but I'm gunning for one new head sculpt per month. Raph is nearly complete now. My next piece will be Leonardo, then Mikey, etc.

Hey, only just seen this thread. Your work is fantastic and I may well be in for 1 or all 4 of these heads too! Only thing is i'd then obviously have to purchase the actual playmates figures, of which I don't have any.

The NECA 1/4 figures are great and look amazing, but I'm a traditional action figure kind of guy (size-wise). I may get Leo if I can get hold of him (UK based), but these heads you are doing really fill a gaping void in the TMNT line.

Great work, can't wait to see all 4 finished heads!

I am now combing through my Don casts, making sure they're clean of pin holes and any heavy seam lines. Thankfully, most of them turned out perfectly fine, but some may need a bit of cleaning up.
I decided to go ahead and prime them all up for painting. They'll be ready to paint, right out of their packs. Only a few, will be hand painted by me. :)

Cleaning up Raph a bit more before finalizing and adding any texture. Needs more wrench time to get it right. I'm taking a break for one week and will resume back to work in April.
I have an anniversary to celebrate on Monday, so I'll be preparing for that this week. :)

That's great! I hope to see those soon! Especially that from SOTO and TMNT 3. :)
I was contemplating doing that myself, but I felt I'd just concentrate on the first film instead and push it as far as I can. So it's nice to know someone out there is tackling all the films.

Hello again fellas. I've been tremendously busy with work, so I had to take a small break from this fun stuff.
I will finally be putting up one pre-primed, unpainted, movie Donatello head cast, on ebay, later today. I will then prepare one more listing for a fully painted head.
Raph is nearly ready for the baking and molding stages. :)
Taking baby steps right now as I tend to more important work.

By the way, I also put this brief video clip together of the Don head, if any of you care to see it.

Hey man, I bought one of your unpainted casts on ebay and absolutely love it. I'd put off buying the figures this whole time but now with your head cast of Don I had to get the figures. Looking forward to painting it now. I wanted to post a vote of encouragement for you to keep going on the other brothers in the (selfish) view to buying all of them from you! seems as though Neca wouldn't produce 6" scale for a long time (if at all) from the latest sdcc announcements and you are too talented a sculptor to not finish the brothers! I remember seeing your early version of this way back, always been on the look out for accurate versions in 6" scale and you nailed it. Hopefully you continue to enjoy it!

First of all, thank you so much for your support. I'm very glad you approve of the sculpt! Let me know if you need any help, etc. :D
I'm definitely going to finish up the rest of the bros. The only hurdle I had to deal with this past two months, was my job in illustration. I had to complete a set of art pieces for my clients before I could return to this project.

I want to try and finish up Raph (molding and casting) in June, since I couldn't make it happen this month. After him, will come Leonardo and so on.
With Mikey, I'm going to see about tooling the peg hole, just a little deeper, so he can stand just a little shorter, next to his brother, without ruining the articulation and I might even re-sculpt the upper legs, just a tiny bit shorter and tool it so it can easily be installed to the factory knee/shin joint, after heating the plastic with an air dryer for a few seconds. :tread::idea:

I really want to pursue a 2.0 set of heads, pushing the accuracy even further, with all new expressions. I hope I can get to that after I'm settled into my new home in the next few months...

So much I want to do, so little time to do it all.

Seriously, thank you guys for being so supportive. I don't think I would be doing this now, if it weren't for all the encouragement I received, in my original post, from a couple of years ago. Rock on:thumbsup:

Thought I'd share pics of my amazing head sculpt on a figure - fully repainted, sealed and ready to go. This is my new favourite figure by FAR! Thoroughly enjoyed doing this and would gladly spend the time on the other brothers too - just not worth it with the standard crappy heads.

Great job on this he looks amazing!

That turned out awesome! I will be working hard on some artwork commissions throughout the next 2 months. Once I get passed the jobs, I will commence the project with Raph and Leo. So much to do, so little time to do it all! Thanks for sharing your pics bud! :)

They look great but why dont you mix acrylic green paint with a bit of red with resin to make it less saturated to match the figure instead of casting in white ?

When I see this I see someone who doesn't need to pass the disgust that most passes when the Playmates or any other toy maker launches a new "definitive" version after you have already purchased the previous one and finds out you were made of Muggle. How good it should be to know modeling and sculpting.

Yeah they hire lame sculptors who dont care about turtles, this is why neca 1/4 looks great, Trevor is TMNT fan and he started his donatello as passion sideproject then it got greenlighted and turned into what we have today :) This is how it should be done.

I cannot believe I just found out about this! Simply amazing. I am about to get into custom painting figures, and I want to start on these figures but the heads are horrifically bad. I have to keep an eye on your status because I want to buy Raph and Leo and hopefully Mikey too.

Does anyone know the dimensions for the hole under the head?

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it. Here's my latest update. I will be moving to a new home by the end of October. Thought it would be sooner, but that didn't pan out. So that's less than 2 months from now. I have all this time, to come up with enough scratch, in order to secure a decent home to rent (not buy), so that means, I need to keep my nose down to my drawing board and develop as much product as I can, to sell. My art, tends to make a decent sum, so I'm crossing my fingers, I don't have to over-exert myself to reach my quota.

Once my family and I are moved in and settled, I can finally resume work on this project and take it all the way. :tsmile:

There is no rushing this project and I really want to push the accuracy as far as I can. My Don is sitting by my desk and begging for his bros to be finished.

Thank you guys so much, for your encouraging words and tips/suggestions.

I wish I could give you the exact dimensions of the ball peg. I went about making a silicone mold of it and used that to make the holes inside the head.

I currently have about 7 more copies of Donatello heads, but they all need the bandana to be painted, which I'll get to maybe next week. I'll make those available and end production until I can get the other bros finished.

They'll be available on my ebay page soon and I'll give the tip off here, in case anyone's interested. If I don't make that deadline, forgive me. I'll try again another day.

Take care bros.

PS. Trevor is AWESOME.

How did you solve resin shrinkage problem? From experience i know that once it cures then its a bit smaller and wont fit anymore like original casted part :)
Did You make original head a bit bigger ?

I made sure to sculpt the head about 3% to 4% larger, which is about the amount of shrinkage you will get, for a part this small and hollow. It's hardly noticeable when comparing it with the original hard copy, but something worth considering when we're talking about fitting pieces together. ;)

The hole itself, was cast from the factory piece and this is the only area, I had to work around with each piece, to make sure the part would fit on the ball joint. Because even at 3 to 4 percent shrinkage, it would become a very tight fit.

For some of the casts, I had to take a small piece of high grit sand paper and sand around the hole for about a minute. Usually that's all it takes to get it to widen enough for a perfect fit.
Also, another way around, as I directed in the manual (enclosed with every piece) is simply heating the plastic cast with either hot water (*only if unpainted), or a hair dryer set on high heat, for a few seconds. The resin becomes soft (almost like hard rubber) and can then easily be applied over the ball joint.

After reading your post, I went ahead pulled out my remaining 7 casts, which were pulled a little over a month ago, to see how well they fit today, and 3 were very tight, while 4 others had a nice fit. So with the 3, I'll have to gently sand the holes a little, to make sure it's not a problem for anyone.

With my next turtle, I will experiment a little and see if I can get that solved so as to not have to go back and work on every piece I pull. But If I can't, then I'll just continue to properly sand each piece.

*if you run scalding hot water on a painted piece, you may face clouding issues on the surface, due to the sealer separating. Only use the hot water solution, with unpainted parts. If you have used hot water and see clouding on the surface, you may need to lightly spray a coat of paint sealer (acrylic based) for it to fill the separation and make the white cloudy problem, go away.

|Great info thanks :) I figured that vaseline also helps to make surface smooth if it comes out weird from mold or from sanding.
Filler like talc also helps from what i read but it changes durability of resin, i might experiment more with that.Did You cast raph yet ? Im planning to buy these figures and then your heads but raph is my favourite.
