Jared Leto is in talks to star in it: http://variety.com/2017/film/news/jared-leto-early-talks-disney-tron-3-1202001798/

After cancelling a third installment in the sci-fi franchise in 2015, Disney is exploring the idea of a movie that would act as a Leto vehicle.

Disney is planning to get back on the grid.

The studio is in the very early stages of development for a new Tron movie, with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto circling to star, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

No writer has been hired at this exploratory stage, and no filmmaker is involved. Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy and exec produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion, will produce. Leto and and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward.

Tron was the 1982 Disney movie set in the fantastic world inside a computer program, a cyberspace called the Grid. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, the film wasnít a hit at the time but was influential with its envelope-pushing special effects and drew a cult following in the years after due to its imaginative story.

In 2010, Disney revisited the world with Tron: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and brought back Bridges. Joseph Kosinski directed. The expensive movie made $400 million worldwide, good enough to warrant interesting in a sequel.

But itís been a series of shutdowns and restarts for a sequel and just as it seemed it was heading towards pre-production, the studio pulled the plug for good in 2015.

But computer programs never die, it seems, they just get upgrades.

Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared on screen before but was a key player in that script.

At this stage it's too early to tell if Kosinski or actors from Tron: Legacy will return.

Leto last portrayed the DC Comics villain The Joker in 2016ís Suicide Squad. He will next appear with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in Denis Villeneuveís Blade Runner 2049, and is attached to direct Paramount's crime thriller 77.

The title of the actual article says Tron 3 so is it a reboot? Or is it a sequel.

Most sites are reporting it's a reboot.

It's a reboot but they're using the outline of the Tron 3 script? Plus Jared Leto as the star?

Big fan of the Tron universe but this doesn't sound appealing.

I'm really okay without Leto being involved in most things.

The concept of Tron is awesome but neither the original nor Legacy were that great. Awesome visuals and concept of an idea? yeah But that's about it so yeah I'm perfectly ok with a reboot as maybe we can finally see this in its full potential.

I mean this is saying it's a reboot and not a remake so it's not like we'll see Flynn's origin again and heck it could be like a soft reboot that it could technically be the same universe but just no references to the old movies. The other movies don't even need any follow up, Tron works fine by itself and didn't need a sequel and when we got Legacy which continued it but also ended it.

i'll be glad if it's a full re-boot.

i enjoyed Tron: Legacy, but it really was trampling over sacred ground.

plus Jared Leto is really great actor.

Legacy was cool but is way too much... requel, not enough sequel or even standalone thing. Whole scenes were just redos of things from the first one. As is it was at least a decent setup for part 3.

Now, after that let's jump into a hard reboot with Jared Leto? Weird. Very weird. Not interested.

after everything done with Tron Legacy and now whatever this new 'Tron' film is supposed to be....

i'm just really glad there was never a film sequel to 'The Dark Crystal'.

did you ever see him in the movie Chapter 27?
he delivered a very disturbing performance in it. can't think of another movie that had me on edge in recent years as that one did.

I have. While the movie isn't very good, he was electric.

it's an even bigger shame considering the physical transformation he took to portray the part.

The Razzies should have a category called "Biggest Waste of an Actor/Actress' Talent".

there'd be far too many nomination possibilities to even know where to start.

haha love the requel term, gotta start using that one. It did try to tell a different story even if the action scenes were obviously taken from the original and the story wasn't much better but whatever. How did it set up part 3? I don't really remember anything, in fact I think it ended it. I know there was an animated show Uprising but haven't watched it.

at the end Olivia Wilde's character came out of The Grid with Flynn's son to the real world.

it was kind of an 'OK' to 'forgettable' movie.

what good is a Tron movie without Tron really being in it?
