Hi, I'm a rookie at this, what exactly goes on here? Do we actually role play, and if so, how do I get started?

Find an RP you'd like to join and ask to... If you have your own character, put their profile in the Character Profile thread. If you are going to play as an already known character, just find and RP you're interested in, an join! :)
