View Full Version : Baxter Stockman & Usagi Yojimbo Prototype Revealed!!

Don't jump for joy yet....because the Baxter is majorly toon inaccurate. The body he comes with doesn't match -any- of his cartoon appearances. And the head looks terrible. So no hope for a headswap with a Utrom Exoskeleton. It looks more like a psychotic Krang's bubblewalker. Seriously, I'm starting to lose major faith in the line. It started so strong too, and now it's starting to stumble. I can't really say much more, the pictures speak for themselves. Playmates, you wound me. At least Usagi is cool.

Usagi looks good. :) I will have to get him.

Aug.... there were so many cool Stockman versions they could have made... why did they make that god awful one? It looks like he was made with scrap pieces from old toys >_>.

But Usagi saves the day. I really hope he has jointed shoulders though, like the first wave had. I really like the two sword idea, very cool. Wasn't Usagi a samurai of sorts? If so, it's a nice little detail.

From what I remember, yeah Usagi was a Samurai/Ninja dude, and I have to agree, what in the world happened to Stockman?! I mean, Fly Stockman was better looking than that thing!!! Oh dear... But, again, Usagi does look good.

But, again, Usagi does look good. Samurai and Ninja are diffrent ;). Samurai were more of soldiers, where Ninja would be like sec. ops.

I'm thinking he was/is a samurai though, hence the two swords. That was a way to tell a samurai apart from the lower classes.

-->> .. I KINDA LIKE THE THOUGHT OF A UNIQUE STOCKMAN FIG.. :dead:
http://www.toydreams.co.uk/images/motu/loose/modulok.jpg
P.S. ..
there's an old Toy from the original 'MOTU' line calle Modulok .. he had peices and parts and guns and arms and mix and match legs and heads and toros and stuff .. and you baisically made your own monster figure with all the body puzzle peices..

..that may be the case here.. and like Splint said.. maybe the head comes off and fits onto an Utrom body.. whatever the case.. a mix and match make-your-own mad scientist sounds pretty cool to me..

there is such a thing as play-value.. TMNT is majorly directed twords kids.. kids need to play.. not just display....so if there is an 'off screen' accessory.. or what-not..i don't think it's such a big deal..
..it's the name of the game.. i just hope people keep that in mind before they pass all judgement on the TMNT toys.. :D

I'm not as dissapointed as I would be if we got that damn stupid spider baxter this looks like some kind of space gear baxter stockman or something and I actully quite like it not so much as I would like normal baxter or giant robo baxter but this thing is really neet looking...
and I'm sorry but the Usagi Yojimbo figure that came out from anartic looks better then the playmates one....I like baxter more then the Usagi figure...and I'll prolly be the only one to say that.

Anyway, I like the Usagi figure! I'll definitly be buying that! :)

Well, that's because that one is comic accurate and this one from playmates will be from the show...& I am really betting Baxter will come with changable parts I'd love to see that if he does that would be awsome or if it transforms wow thatd be great in any case though I still like him.

I don't mind Baxter's body so much as the head (which needs to have a more accurate look IMO). See, I could always use a good mess of a figure like that during childhood playtime as, well, a desperation guy on the brink of death wanting revenge.

....I actually mean that, sadly.

Usagi I don't care about, admitedly. Decent looks, happily.

Bry

Yikes.

Baxter looks... lame. Yes, lame. Considering that we're looking at a fully-painted plastic prototype, we're probably looking at something pretty close to the final product. And that's unfortunate.

However, I understand that a freaky robot body with six arms and random claws, guns, and pointy things popping out of it will have more 'play value' for the kiddies than a guy in a labcoat. We can only hope that they'll do some other Baxter variants in the future (and between Original Baxter, Utrom Body Baxter, Giant Freakin' Robot Baxter, Wheelchair Baxter, and Spider Baxter, there's plenty of potential there - let's just hope it's taken advantage of).

Usagi, however, is looking bloody good!

I'm digging Usagi quite a bit, but Baxter is a no go. They didn't even get the head right! I have very little extra cash and I've already made my list of TMNT figures I will spring for. Usagi has made the list. Unfortunatly poor ol' Baxter has not.

Uck. You were right about Baxter's action "figure". It looks absolutely horrible!. Like Krang's old bubblewalker gone psycho and on steriods. Double yuck. Won't be getting THIS thing, THAT'S for sure.

At least Usagi looks decent, though. If the finished product looks as good as this wax model, I'm definitely getting him.

EDIT: LOL Wonder what kind of "action figure" that Playmates will come up with on Baxter now that he's been reduced to a brain, spinal-cord and eyeball in a jar?!

As a reporter, I am allowed to deliver my honest opinion on what I see. I am not going to kiss anyone's behind when it comes to TMNT. Unless it is well deserved. That goes for Peter Laird, Playmates, Funimation, and Fox Kids. If you have an issue with the -truth- from my point of view, take it up with Krang. Otherwise, deal with it. This is a fan site, not a professional news site. And I am allowed to be honest in my news reports. Baxter looks like ass, that is the gods honest truth. I word it more professionally then that in my news stories for a reason. Besides, if I'm honest what I see....if Playmates is watching, maybe we'll see some changes. I am not going to blindly follow anyone or anything, just so you don't have to face the truth from my point of view. Thank you, and good night. :)

I do find Dr. Stockman's figure quite disturbing. However, I have high hopes with Playmates. Of course, I still bought figures when they became such nonsense as "Raph the Magnificent Magician" and whatnot. Perhaps this form of Stockman may sometime appear in the series. Oh yes, and a yojimbo is a personal samurai bodyguard. I believe it is one of the highest honors a samurai can recieve.

You all ought to be ashamed of yourselves, bashing the Baxter figure.

Realize, more children probably buy this line than the 'die hard fans' do.

Meaning:
1) You need figures with fun play value. A parent would probably pick this guy up faster than a labcoat  version of baxter.

2) Who knows if its accurate of not - it could be from a future episode. :-?

3) Its better looking, sitting there with foot soldiers and robots  , than a turtle with some helmet and shin guards  .

I mean, we got utroms! We got shredder clones! We got mousers and turtle tots! Who ever thought we'd see these things in plastic form? (namely shredder clones). but we have, and will continue to get cool toys. But, you need SOMETHING a little oddball once in awhile. :P

Besides, it looks like a destroyer droid from Star Wars, which is fine by me :D

Wow. Just wow. Chill. Seriously.

I don't have an issue with this so called truth as you see it. I have an issue with reading it ALONG SIDE the news on the main page. That's all. I never once brought up anything regarding you blindly following anything, so I have no idea where the hell you're coming from on that.

I am not attacking your opinion of those figures at all, so relax. I'm not even voicing my own, nor will I in this case.

Just report the news, dude! That's all! If you want to post your opinions, then I think that you should do it in a seperate post. Why? Because I think it'd look better and I'm trying to help out the site by offering my suggestion. The opinion of the reporters is not news. The news is news. And that's the truth as I see it.

Of couse, I don't expect anyone to listen to me. So, whatever.

Ninjatron, the point is that it's expected for me to deliver a fair and realistic unbiased opinion. And while I have applauded Playmates in the past, I have to be serious and offer the fact that they majorly dropped the bomb at this point in time. They knew what the -fans- wanted, from the endless complaining of wanting a Baxter figure. And they screwed the pooch this time. And I'm sad about that.

If all I did was report the news, it would be a very short news post. Because we don't get much info when these pictures are released. So I have to judge these things fairly. I have nothing to lose or gain by my honesty. Other then the fact I will not pull punches and fawn about something in a news story unless it is well deserved. Which I have done before.

Like in the case of Tales of the TMNT Vol. 2. I normally hate Lawsons work, but I said it looked much better in TMNT Vol. 2. Because I was offering a true and unbiased opinion. His work looks better there, then it has in all of Volume 4. And I said so, in my post. I appreciate you may not like my opinon, and I am sorry. I can only offer the same thing I did before.

Again, take the matter up with Krang if you don't want personal opinion to flavor my news posts. If he feels the same, I will personally resign from the position, and take my leave. But I will never, never, apoligize for being truthfully honest about something. My readers expect it, and I deliver.

Splinter,
Who, exactly, do you consider to be 'the fans'? Us, of course, but this line is also for CHILDREN. Read my post aboe, and you'll see we're getting some cool stuff! But, there has to be children-aimed toys as well. IE-in the star wars line, you get the occasional redo of R2-D2 so the character is there for children.

Aside from baxter's face, the figure, the toy itself, is just fine. "Dropped the bomb" is such an exaggeration. I mean, this line is still fresh, who cares if there's one figure that a) isn't from an episode we know of, and b) is a little bit different from what "the fans" want. I think we're all just spoiled, and need to chill.

Darthsmozers, clearly you don't understand how the toy industry works. Children -love- to recreate scenes from shows with figures. Sure they expand up them with imagination. But it will typically always start out centered on something that happened in the toon.

As for Star Wars, that's an awful example. All of the figures (or atleast 90% of them) are movie accurate. It is not an example of making a 'toyetic' figure for kids. They will play with R2 no matter what. If Playmates wants to ignore the toon, then fine. I will continue to offer a less then steller review on their work.

They dropped the bomb with a lot of fans with the inaccurate toon TMNT figures. I didn't mind it as much at first. But then we got the non-accurate Space Hoppers, when accurate ones were planned. That was the first clamp release on the bomb. Heaven forbid that they actually give the -fans- what they want.

Sure, kids may love it. But then make two different baxters. Pack a toon accurate 'Spider Baxter' in the Mouser 6-Pack instead of one of the mousers. See, perfect compromise. A Baxter for the kiddies, and one for us. That's how the line -should- be run. Especially since that was how it was promised to be run. :)

You missunderstand me again. I don't care what you think about these figures or that comic or whatever. If you're going to stand there and call yourself a reporter, than just report the news. What you are doing is not reporting. It's editorializing. And that's FINE elsewhere. But when I go to read the news, I really don't care to read what you think about what you're reporting on, be your reaction positive, negative, or whatever. I just want the news. Anyone who has taken a grade 6 media class can tell you that the writers' opinions have no place in the news.

If all I did was report the news, it would be a very short news post.
That would be GREAT!

I appreciate you may not like my opinon, and I am sorry.
When did I say that I didn't like your opinion? I have made no mention on if I agree or disagree with you, not will I. I don't care either way, and it's not the point that I'm trying to make. And yet what you think about this and that is right up there on the main page, under the guise of news. Well sorry, but what you think of the news is not news, and having it up there along side the news just looks unprofessional, and dare I say, ugly.

My readers expect it, and I deliver.
Well then maybe you should deliver it somewhere else. Honestly, what's so hard about posting your opinions of the news in a seperate post, so that it doesn't show up on the main page?

Take a good look at some of the Transformers news pages. If any of those sites "reported" the news the way you do, they'd be torn apart! It's just the news, short and to the point, with links to the sources and an option for readers to discuss if they so choose. I think that this site, as a well respected part of the TMNT fan community, ought to be the same way, and I'm simply offering my suggestion on how you personally can make this place better.

.. again..i know Splinter i know his opinion and don't hate the fact that he reports the way he does.. he is as much of a fan as me..if he wants to be brutally honest..i do my best to learn and accept it..

he can speak up for himself and he can justify why he thinks the way he does..

..i don't know ..
..i don't feel real good about myself right now but that's redundant.. the TMNT stuff is gonna get negative feedback as much as it's gonna get rave feedback.. i've been with this stuff long enuff' to see people giving rationalopinions and opinions where they say.. O' well that sucks ..huhuhuuhh .. and there is nothing to back up the fact why it 'sucks' ..they just say it sucks 'just cuz' ..

..Splinter is not of the later//
..
..ah f6ck .. it's a good time to be TMNT fan little kid, or big kid. ..here's out little friend :: :|

Wow that that TMNT toy line looks about the best it's ever been.. :|
:| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| .. hmm i think there is a crouquet mallet in the back with my forehead's name on it.. and that name is.. Bull'seye .. :dead: :dead: :dead:

Ninjatron,

Take the matter up with Krang. If he feels the same, I will tender my resignation. Now that is the end of this discussion in a public forum. Especially in the news forums. If you really must continue to discuss it publically, do so in general discussion. You can even post a poll to see if I should change my ways. As of now, any further off topic discussion in this thread will be swiftly removed.

I got a reply today from my email to Playmates Toys about the Baxter Stockman figure.

This is from the Product Manager for the Ninja Turtle figures:
This is our interpretation of the Spider Robot. We may release just a basic Baxter next year... We will have over 20 variant characters coming out in 2005 and a bunch more still to go in 2004.

Playmates should be making a Giant Robotic Baxter from "Rtrn to NY".
Hopefully a toon-accurate Baxter will come later. Like I said about the vehicles in my separate topic, Playmates seems to be ignoring the cartoon and making their own toy designs. They better straighten up and make cartoon-accurate toys. We need better vehicles that are cartoon-accurate.

Well, after seeing todays episode, I highly doubt that Baxter will be appearing in a future episode.....

Ex-squeeze me?! Who, in God's name, would want something THAT disgusting?! Making a toy of Baxter as he now is, is tantamount to making a very twisted snow-globe. I'll give this latest (and hopefully LAST!) version of Baxter a miss IF Playmates IS ever CRAZY enough to produce it, thank you VERY much! There are just SOME things that SHOULDN'T be made into a toy or action figure, and this current version of Baxter is one of 'em. Yech.

He was being sarcastic. Notice the roll eyes and the dead smiley?

I will buy both of them. Although they both look a little dissapointing.

Don't worry, Aaron, they're only prototypes. I'm sure they'll improve them before their release.

Actually, lot's of the time, prototypes look BETTER than the actual released figures. And I don't think they look dissapointing at all....I think they're some of the best figures from the new line. Well, Usagi atleast. Baxter blows.

I agree. Usagi isn't awful, but the Baxter likeness is awful.

I'll buy both of them. I'm not a completist though. I didn't buy the sports, armored, or space hoppin turtles yet and probably won't. I just get what I like.

I hear you, man. I'm not as much a collector as you, but I do have quite a menagerie of TMNT stuff. :D :D
