Interesting to see how heavily the TMNT intro package for the toyline relied upon what had been established in the Palladium RPG "TMNT and Other Strangeness."

Found this interesting:

Perhaps Splinter was never a very ordinary rat. It is even likely that he was a mutant long before the strange ooze from the broken T.C.R.I. canister began changing him.
Interesting, PL alluded the fact that Splinter wasn't just a normal rat which is why he could mimic Yoshi's ninjitsu in his cage even before the mutagen, but this basically confirms it. Too bad Mirage never told that story.

Yep, I remember Laird hinted at that in the interview segments that were included on the original 4Kids dvd releases. I was always disappointed that loose end was left dangling.

Fascinating about Splinter. And let's face it, the riddle of Splinter's true origin is way more juicy than whatever Peter could have come up with.
No disrespect, Peter is the man, but while his new origin for April O'Neil was pretty neat, it didn't seem to do much for the fans.
Mystery is a more powerful tool. Some of the most fascinating bits from Mirage Studio's were the gaps in the timeline that lead to a dreary future.

I've always wondered what it was that broke the turtles apart, as evidenced by Peter Laird's "Old Times" short story, and I think it's better that way.

That said, I do wonder if Splinter "returning from the dead" in volume 4 has something to do with his "secret origin",

Straight outta Palladium!

(Pre-revised edition, that is.)

Thanks for sharing. I love that early Mirage art (the smaller details rather than the larger ones). I can totally imagine Donatello sneaking out at night and rummaging through electronics stores dumpsters.
