Black Adam is a super human who is the flipside of Captain Marvel, according to Wikipedia. "When I was doing the junket for the Game Plan, someone had asked me about Shazam! again, and I said, 'Well, to be honest with you, ... what I would like to see is for the fans to decide who they would like me to play,'" Johnson said, adding: "Considering how passionate the fans are about this, I said, 'I don't believe it's up to the studio or the director or myself.' So there's [Captain Marvel]. And there's Black Adam. And I said, 'So, you guys let me know who?' And across the board, it was all Black Adam."

Shazam!, based on the classic DC Comics series, centers on Billy Batson, a young boy who gains the ability to transform into the superhero Captain Marvel by saying the magic word 'Shazam!'

Johnson's Get Smart helmer Peter Segal will direct Shazam!, which is written by John August (Corpse Bride). Johnson said that August turned in his most recent draft of the script on Nov. 2 in advance of an impending writers' strike. Shooting is expected to take place in late 2008, after Johnson completes his role in Disney's upcoming Witch Mountain.

Great! He's a much better fit with Adam than he would have been as the big red cheese.

I was looking at the list of movies coming out next year and discovered that this film now has a different name. Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam. WTF?

Shazam starts shooting in February and... no more Rock? This is very puzzling on a number of levels.

seems like a weird thing to say.

but, whatever.

I doubt a super light hearted seeming character like shazam would fit well in the DC Murder verse. in the animated series, they show billy as even more boyscout than superman.

that won't fit in well.

And I can kind of understand beginning things with a Black Adam movie to warm people up to the idea of a Shazam! movie... but I can't understand just beginning with a Shazam! movie that doesn't even have Black Adam in it at all.

How does that help a Shazam movie that doesn't have Black Adam in it?

I really, really, reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally don't care about this.

I am, however, baffled that WB chose this as the next project to prioritize? Not Flash or Green Lantern? Not Nightwing or Batgirl? Not Robin or Supergirl or Man of Steel 2?

Well, isn't Flash in active production but still mired with the same problems its had since the beginnings? (revolving door of directors, etc.) Putting a "rush" on Flash (get it?) would probably make things even more difficult to keep a director on it, I'd imagine.

This Shazam! thing smells of Geoff Johns to me. He's always had a soft place for Captain Marvel at DC and with all of his many interviews in the last few months all saying the same mantra about, "The thing that's so great about DC characters is how much they're full of hope and fun, blah blah," I bet he's convinced the right people that Shazam! can be the champion of that movement in the DCCU. Because they've already screwed up Superman, in their eyes.

It's so weird how afraid they are of touching Superman. Even before Man of Steel, even before Superman Returns... just years and years of them... talking about it. Thinking things, overthinking things. He's like the easiest DC character to get "right."

Yeah, this smells of Geoff Johns all right.

it should have been what superman needed too..

everything can't be dark and moody like batman..and even batman needs a break from that sometime.
